So /fgg/, what are your thoughts on the Guile Akuma matchup?

At first, on the surface, I had thought it was well in guiles favor since all of akuma's default shit (Air Fireballs, Demon Flip mixups, etc.) seems to just lose to a guile doing his own default shit (i.e throw booms, flashkick anything that leaves the ground, walk after booms and hit buttons), but the more I play through it as Akuma i find that if you just turn your play on your head and play lame boring shakenetsu zoning you can force guile into an awkard position of his own, one where he needs to jump red fireballs and approach to threaten you.

The Close/Midrange footsie game is technically in guiles favor, but solid techincal use of akuma's buttons can yield high rewards.

I'm thinking this matchup is far closer to fair than is often projected just because both characters can take each other out of their comfort zones and require an alternate style of play from both players.

Forcing a good guile to approach is still easier said than done, even with red fireballs. Bazooka knee will allow him to close distance while being able to block/charge. Stomp/Stungun isn't a mixup because both options lose to just neutral jumping (although stungun has much less recovery S2 so whiffing it isn't auto free punish anymore)
If you are low HP and woried about EX stungun, back walk (NOT DASH) until you are full and I mean complete full screen. if you see him crouch charging be ready to hit that up back.

On offense, he has few answers to deep jump ins unless he has good reflexes and ex airknees you. St.lp and cr.hp don't hit for shit straight above him and cr.hp is easily punishable on whiff.

They aren't improving the game in meaningful ways. I gave SFV my last chance back in December 2016 when they released S2 with Akuma.

I expected a really big overhaul. Instead it was like a minor patch with some balance changes. Not going back anytime soon.

SFV's biggest issue is that it's too... straightforward, I'm not going to say fundamental-focus because people will argue about what counts, but the game has a way you're supposed to play that applies to basically every top tier character, they all follow the same essential flowchart and damage from the top two characters is way too high.

It's boring because there's not enough character play diversity, you could play Ryu but why not play this other guy who does the same shit except has better pokes, or more damage, or a command grab?

Games need character gimmicks, the v-skill is not enough.

The issue is that they adopted the moba model of releasing new characters

The issue with this is powercreep.
Now, unlike mobas where you can bitch that x character is just over fucking statted, SF tends to be fairly close in terms of "numbers"
The real problem is as they release and design more characters, they tend to get "better" over time. More or less,capcom gets better at designing good characters. They look at good characters they've already designed, see what people like about them, and tend to improve upon those trends as they continue designing new characters.

Thats why the 2imp/3st or Super/AE/Ultra model worked better, because the new characters were designed in a big block rather than piecemeal.
Since they were designed and tested all at once, they tend to be balanced against each other fairly evenly.

Do you honestly think capcom puts the requisite hundreds of playtesting hours vs ever character required to hit an optimal balance point on every single DLC character? Hell, i would bet they just aim for a rough target and try to pretend that they don't make DLC characters too outrageous (cough, urien/kolin cr.mk being +) and then release them into an enviroment with patches too few and far between

SFV sucks.: Lack of options in offense / defense and in general. I could say all the problems from the game are born from the lack of options in just about every scenario.

We are left with a game that, like every other fighting game, has situations where a guess is required. The problem is that the extremely offensive nature of SFV, coupled with the unforgiving damage scaling, very poor defensive options and downright removal (or heavy nerfing) of certain playstyles and traits that would give players an edge over others (reactionary players, execution monsters, footsie monsters, lab monsters, zoners, etc) it creates a very straightforward, watered down and linear game where a single mistake can mean defeat, without much that you can do about it other than guessing better next time.

Get ready to pull out your sickest throw - meaty - shimmy mixups! There's no way to avoid this. Zoning was killed, neutral is bad, anti-airs are bad, 8f hurts. You'll have to fend against a random, undeserved mixup (probably in the corner, because brokencharacters has massive corner carry). Which leads to the next issue:

Character's lack of originality and poor balance. Balance in my opinion, should be achieved by having several characters do different things, and having a few excel at some, and be weak at others. SFV balance works in a way that most characters have most traits available (damage, corner carry, command throw, throw loop, 3 frame normal, etc), while only a few don't (accentuating very clearly who are the low tiers). Which is the exact opposite of having few characters excel at something while being only decent at other aspects. See this chart I made for a more detailed explanation.
You cannot improve with this game. Losses feel unfair and don't really teach you much. SFV is effectively a game where not a lot of thinking is involved when attacking, where pretty much any average joe could rob a game off of someone like Daigo. This makes evident how much depth this game lacks at a fundamental level. If you used to be a zoning beast with ridiculous execution and reactions, guess what, you probably won't be great at SFV. This game doesn't allow people to express themselves.
And expressing oneself is the other most important issue derived from the lack of options in every facet of the game.

Characters, mixups in offense, neutral, defense, it's all homogenized. There are no true character specialists in this game. You see a random online Karin, you see Punk's Karin, they play exactly the same. Punk is just better at conditioning his opponents and probably has better defense. Other than that, at an execution and technical level, both Karins will do the same mixups, the same tenko finisher, the same CA confirm. There's no thrill, there's no delight in watching a masterfully crafted combo sequence or setup that you've never seen before, because everyone is using day 1 combos. There's nothing more beyond that. This directly affects the viewing experience and drains a lot of hype out of the game
Coupled with the server, UI and overall game infrastructure, SFV is very hard to love as a whole. Don't even get me started on how they ruined certain characters, that was the drop that spilled the glass for me.

tldr SFV sucks but I have legit reasons.
