Buff: Good weapon to use when you build it up. Only one without a passive effect, but it makes up for it.

Backup:Makes you a bit beefier, helps your team a ton when pushing and negating a good chunk of damage. It's always respected.

Conch: By far the most used, but for a good reason. You can toot your horn sooner than the normal banners, and give your team mad milk effects. It's a bit more rewarding than other banners, since you do have more survivabilty. It teaches you not to look for health around the maps, so it's a tiny crutch. Still a good banner.

If you're going to play hard roamer soldier and want to live forever, go black box + concheror. Your secondary is going to depend on your playstyle and the map you're on though for the most part. If you are good at bombing and jumping to flank etc., throw on gunboats when the map allows for it. Banners are a good sidegrade, but if you aren't good at taking out multiple classes at once with rockets and scoring at least 1 or 2 direct hits with them in an engagement you may want to consider using the shotgun instead. You can also consider playing close to a combo if there is one and pairing your banner activation with pushes.

To be fair, that extra 20hp is always a plus. If you have a medic overhealing you, you go above the damage threshold to die in three pills, so a demo has to land a perfect full clip to kill you.

And I thought that damage done while under a banners effects didn't count towards charging it? Because conchs effect may be stated as defensive, but its just as useful for offensive pushers as it is for defenders (especially with sentry damage resistance)

The beta failed to impress me and my analysis of the meta was spot on in noting that it didn't offer anything of what I wanted in an fps. It's a moba with some shooting flavor thrown into it that doesn't contribute to the actual game. That and Blizzard has no fucking idea how to design maps for an fps game.

I generally fuck around as a roamer in casual, if there's a good Heavy pocket (rare) or Demoman pocket (even rare) I stick around and bomb anything come close to Medic. Trick is not sticking close to your pocket duo, but keeping height advantage somewhat via rocketjumps or higher balconies around.
I pair Buff with Mangler for repetitive minicrit shots and Airstrike with Battallion so I don't get rekt by a headshot when I blastjump. Sometimes I swap those for Concheror when I'm bored.

Every fps game needs to have some major play element to breaking stalemates and standoffs. Something that allows players to do things they wouldn't normally be able to do. Simply watching people shoot each other alone is boring, so you need to add some tactical and strategic choices.

The first step in addressing this is through game design choices. For example, health pools. CSGO has incredibly low health pools compared to the damage weapons can put out, along with all weapons being able to headshot. This results in extremely fast paced, deliberate games where a single mistake means you instantly die. To counteract this extremely high risk, there are things such as flash bangs, smoke grenades, etc. that can provide an advantage to the person who is pushing offensively. Also note that in CSGO the emphasis is more on the shooter rather than team coordinated play because it is quite possible for a good to player to single handedly win a game through pure skill alone. CSGO and other games like it are what I would call mechanistically based games in that a player with strong enough personal skills can carry a victory.

Next we can take a look at TF2. Health pools in this game are much larger and maps are also more expansive compared to CSGO. Weapon choices are limited by class and all have unique functions and patterns with relatively low damage ratios to health depending on the circumstances. Healthpacks and medic overhealing also add more buffer to allow for risky plays. This extra safety is counteracted by possible risks such as kritzkrieg medics and sniper headshots. More importantly, managing your team's uber/kritz % as well as the positioning of all of your members is key in winning a match. No matter how good you are as soldier, unless you have competent support it will be extremely difficult to carry a victory by yourself against an equally skilled enemy team. Each of the strengths of a class is checked by the abilities of another such as with spy being able to backstab and pyros having aoe flame damage to easily identify them. Scout's high damage potential and movement speed is checked by low health. TF2's decision to use classes as well as different weapons is a component that adds depth to the decisions made by the team. Different weapons result in wildly different playstyles and teams need to be flexible to adapt. These are some of the reasons why I consider TF2 to be an extremely good balance of mechanistic and strategic skill.

Now for Overwatch. Rather than opting for a class system, Blizzard decided to use a "hero" system reminiscent of MOBAs. Integral to their game is the concept of the ultimate and the unique ultimates every hero has. Every hero's ult allows them to affect the field. Alone this would not be a major problem, in the same way that a lone uber from a medic is not going to break the game in TF2. However, there is no restriction on ultimates and their charge is gained entirely for free. The game's core design is centered on a mechanic with essentially no cost that all heroes can use. Even without getting into the specifics of each ult, the fact that exists along with large health pools, extremely low damage output compared to health, and the risk involved of being one player down and one ult short versus the enemy team results in highly defensive, methodical play revolving around the accumulation and strategic deployment of ults at the right time. It also results in "death balls" since there is very little reason to ever separate from your team's core in an attempt to make a play unless you are using your ult.

There is no way to instantly kill another player with the standard attacks you have available to you consistently. Everything is centered on game changing ult usage and slow creeping along singular lanes to defeat the enemy. Flanking is not necessary. Blizzard's map design is reflective of their inexperience on that, but that's a separate matter.
