>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy, Gone Home, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles. Absorbed the /lite/ general some time ago.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indie and miscellaneous games, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

It's "Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka?"

A web novel that got adapted in a manga. It's intended to be another deconstruction of the "NEET gamer find himself reincarnated in a RPG world and make everyone his bitch" fad. The writing is decent, the translations are pretty shitty, and the manga makes the spider way too cute as opposed to the disgusting monster she is in the novel.
>>
>>173969434
Its too cute.

Heh, no, I wouldn't say those two are comparable at all (aside from a few elements here and there in the settings).
It's a cute and immensely melancholic metroidvania that features bugs and a lot of mystery. Ever played Aquaria? Very much like it, except more melancholia.

It's challenging and fun. Has a few flaws here and there, but considering how little money the Kickstarter needed it's crazy impressive.
Give it a go if you like metroidvanias, and if you don't find the price to steep.
>>
>>173970671

Oh, Metroid Prime actually isn't a "metroidvania" (despite the title. ..I know it's a bit odd)

A metroidvania is--akin to the classic Metroid and Castlevania games--a platformer with a focus on expansive map exploration and power-ups that change gameplay, enabling access to new areas, which in turn incites backtracking and hunting for secrets and collectibles.
(Hollow Knight is a bit extra heavy on the platform-technical side, though, with certain places demanding very tight control.)

>>173970941

Whoo! Well I remember you too, heh

>>173971350
Well, there's no set-in-stone definition, sadly, but if you go by popular connotative usage, most people by far associate it with platformers (as per the classics), but yeah, I guess Metroid Prime meets many of the criteria, yeah

This. A lot of people are bashing Yooka-Laylee but criticisms are generalized too much because reviewers are trying to summarize a dozen big things wrong with the game in a single review, whereas some people are coming out and elaborating on the specific scenarios that make Yooka-Laylee a failure as a BK successor.
>>
>>173987769
At least that one bothered to write complains that make sense.
There's no point in saying that "it's not the same thing", it's too general and unless you played both games, you won't understand.
>>
>>173987898
that's true. Most of the detailed reviews have been from BK fans and although I get it because I have played BK, other people might not get it
>>
>>173988238
I personally never played it, so the only part from his critic that I understood was when he complained about the logic in the game.

I get the feeling it's the sort of situation Matthewmatosis would enjoy laying out and going through in detail (if he found the game interesting enough to spend time on in the first place, but that's up to him).
>>
>>173989454
Poi's first level literally feels like they ripped the first level of Sunshine and then redesigned it into its own thing. Not necessarily bad, but weird.
>>
>>173989454
Kind of like the look of this. Looks like the level design is focused on 3Dness and everything I liked about Mario Galaxy
>>
>>173971919
Only played the first world but I agree with how the level design so far isnt intuitive.
I played Banjo when I was 7 and could easily figure out where all the NPCs were without thinking hard since the design was that intuitive. In Yooka Laylee I had trouble finding Trouser Snake once I found enough quills and once I found him I had no idea where rextro's arcade or the transformation doctor were.
The mechanic of using pagies to expand unlocked worlds makes this all worse and compromised the level design.
Toybox had the same problem but that was just a testing ground. The final game shouldnt feel like things were just strewn about.
>>
>>173990374
A Hat in Time also copy pasted Sunshine for it's challenge levels

>>
>>174014409
It just seems so simple. For some I have this notion that it's really short, and more like a flash-based game or something.
How long is it, and how much stuff in total is there?
>>
>>173993883
The games werent meant to be played on LCD TV which werent even available for consumers at the time.
Its no different than some indie game dev in 2070 making a retro 3D film thtas entirely two images side by side, ignoring that anyone playing a 3D or VR title would have technology to give them the proper image instead of unwatchable stacked visuals.
You state that things look different on different hardware as if its obvious but it isnt, people seriously think that the games are supposed to look like this and the majority of indie games reflect this.
>>173987706
Then that sucks, but its not surprising since almost none of these nostalgiabait retro games resemble the classics whose coattails they try to ride on in visuals, level design, or audio.
Shovel Knight took small liberties with scrolling backgrounds and increased sound channels, but its an entirely different thing to purposely make shitty graphics and claim its retro when retro games did not look like that at all.

Has Been Heroes.
Princesses are just glorified accessories and have no actual gameplay impact other than every twenty souls let you use a spell instantly, with no effect on cooldowns (and that could have just been a standard meter). Story-wise you're meant to be escorting them but considering it's a game over if just one your heroes dies, they just walk behind you and do nothing.
You switch around three heroes in three seperate lanes during the game. There's 36 Heroes all falling within one of three roles; DPS, Tank or Support. Heroes seem to differ based on elemental alignment and spell bonuses.
I'm having a fantastic run. My Luchador has ended up going from a warrior to a Concrete Battlemage thanks to all these items and spells/spell bonuses.
>Heaps of Stamina/Health to tank hits if necessary.
>Casting any spell causes melee to recharge instantly and causes all cooldowns to reduce by an additional amount.
>All damage taken reduced by 20 percent.
>Spells recharge 130% quicker than normal.
And that's not even mentioning the spell combinations which can deal a massive amount of damage if used properly.

The manga only covers 10% of the story. If you want to read the novel, you can find translations around. I suggest novelplanet.com, it's the most complete one, even through it doesn't do side stories. The translation is also sometimes a bit weird, but the best translation I found (on blastron01's tumblr) isn't far in the story.

Or you can just stick to the manga, it'll be slower but headache-free.

So, indie, I`m at an impasse.

I have $26 in steambux. After my friend gifted me Hollow Knight and Rimworld (Which are both pretty sick, but I really can`t run them until I upgrade my rig), I realized that I have nothing else to buy. I looked a bit, and I`ve settled on Rain World and Oneshot.

Both seem pretty interesting, but I have some pretty major holdups about both. Rain World looks more fun and I like the way the creatures interact and look, but it also seems particularly frustrating and the controls don`t seem particularly tight.
On the other hand, Oneshot sounds like it has a much better story, but I`m not typically a fan of story games and I feel like I already know all the twists of the story.

TL;DR help me decide what I waste my money on
>>
>>174092436
That's the art for the light novel yea, but that's how she looks in the manga too. She just thinks of herself as a small cute thing when she's actually roughly the size of a 10 year old (at the start) and not all that cuddly.

>>174092436
After she leaves the mountain the direction of the story changes, and while I can understand why some people don't like it I'm mostly fine with it since we finally got out of "the past" narratively. Even before the parts that some people tend to dislike there's still a bunch of adventuringand shit before that happens.

It's probably the second best LN I've read, I would recommend it yea.
>>
>>174092436
Hey, do you know that general idea that books/novelizations are always more complete than the movies?
It also applies to web novels. The Kumo renders her monologues quite well, but there's still a lot lacking, and the comedic aspect is accentuated, while the original story is less funny. I would still recommend it, if you have the patience to read stuff that may be worded strangely.
Still not as bad as Konosuba or Overlord.

>>174092525

..Then again, I used to think comics was for snotty kids too, until a friend of mine gave me Watchmen as a birthday present. Holy shit
>>
>>174092893
If it's Steambucks, he can't buy rig with it.

>>174092995
Not really.
The manga and the novels are way too different. For Overlord, Skeleton McScaryFace doesn't interact much, and mostly keeps to himself, putting the reader in a different perspective.
In the novel, you see things in his point of view, so while he seems extremely calm in the manga, the noven makes it clear that he's extremely agitated and borderline paranoid when the NPCs start reacting.

Same with Konosuba, the manga turns Megumin and Darkness into simple-minded fools, while the novel makes it clear that outside of their peculiar quirks, they're both very decent people. When I switched from the manga to the novel, I was actually really surprised by how dependable Darkness was in the novel.
Aqua is still a complete retard in the novel.

>>174093080
I was talking about the difference, the discrepancy between the novels and the mangas. Kumo is relatively the same, even through the manga is light-hearted compared to the novel. For Konosuba and Overlord, they are vastly different.

>>174093329
Well, there's the issue of the original writing, and the issue of the translation. A bad translation can ruin an objectively well-written novel.
>>
>>174093329
>and those few snippets I've read of light novels seem more like fan-fiction level stuff.
I don't know if it's a japanese writing style thing or what, but most of them seem to be in a rather stilted format.

The group that translated Overlord presented it as a "normal" book and I do think that actually helps its presentation a fair amount, but keeping the "stilted" style of the original writing is also pretty fine, I think.
>>
>>174093052
>>174093267

>The manga and the novels are way too different.
I'm horrendously confused by this criticism. The novel is the story, the manga is just an adaption for more money / people who would want a manga.

You can argue the adaptions are kind of bad but I don't understand how you would take that as "the material is bad".

Also the manga did the lizardman arc a hundred times better than the novel.

Wasn't there some "isekai" indie game not too long ago? I know kono suba just came out with a megaman clone but I think there was something actually independent a bit ago.

>I'm horrendously confused by this criticism.
It's not criticism, it's a statement.
There are differences between the manga and the novel. Sometimes, they're minimal, and sometimes, they give a completely different impression of the characters.
In the manga, Skeleton Spookface looks like he's calm and collected, and usually keeps his thoughts to himself (raising the question of why he goes so far to save the vampire girl), while the novel presents him completely differently, and makes it clear that he considers the guardians to be mementos of his friends.
Same thing, different point of views.

And then there's the issue of just showing characters at their worst, like in Konosuba where Darkness is usually only visible when she is in her masochist mood, while the novel often mentions her staying silent and observing during discussions.
>>
Man, we're popular today.
>>
>>174093968
You're not wrong, but I'm pretty confused because you respond to "they're great" with "no, not really" and then say the novel is too different from the manga.

Because they are different things.
Not like there's something wrong (in fact, if the manga was a carbon copy of the novel, then why make a manga in the first place), but I thought it was worth mentioning that the novel and the manga are vastly different.
Because, you know, if someone start reading Kumo because "cute spider-chan's adventure", he'll be in for a wild ride.
>>
>>174094307
The tone of the manga isn't any different from the tone of the novel at the part it's at, it's only later on in the story when the story changes.

Since kono suba megaman made it sell like hotcakes I wonder if any other people will try that? VNs aren't uncommon but people obviously like mega man more.

Not anyone you're replying to, but here:
>>174092829
you're about novels, and saying that Konosuba and Overlord is bad. Yet here:
>>174093427
you're saying the novels are better?

It seems to me that most of the time, the novels are more niche, which makes sense considering that drawing a mange (let alone animating an anime adaptation!) takes a lot more resources, and thus needs to be more generally appealing.

The inherent cringyness of the minds of Japanese novel creators becomes painfully apparent when reading light novels, imo.
The only thing I might consider reading is the Overlord novel, but only because the manga (and anime) is so damn slow.
>>
>>174093523
Well, I haven`t tested rimworld yet, but I tested Hollow Knight and it hit around 10 frames maybe? It`s more intensive than it seems, though, so I don`t know how much it counts.

My computer can run heavily modded skyrim and FNV fine (on low settings) but can choke on some otherwise totally simple games. Yugioh Devpro overheats it if it`s on my bed for christsakes. It`s an enigma.
>>
>>174094552
Not exactly.
First, I say that the books are more complete than the movies based on them.
Then I explain it applies to web novels too, and I use Kumo as an example of a web novel giving more details than the manga..
Then I give more extreme examples, and I quote both Overlord and Konosuba, as the differences between the mangas and the base material is greater in these case than in Kumo's case.

>The inherent cringyness of the minds of Japanese novel creators becomes painfully apparent when reading light novels, imo.
Yeah. In Konosuba's case, it's obvious that it's referencing mangas, even in the descriptions (Darkness getting embarassed and letting out steam, Kazuma sweating when witnessing something embarassing, and all the girls treating him like crap).

Man, I'd pay for a RPG based on Kumo. It would be like a mix between the Elder Scrolls games (skills develop as you use them) and the Fallout games (or you just pay for them with skill points).
Imagine all the minmaxing you can pull off.

>rpg similar to Dark Souls in tone
>you start out as a small monster
>no text
>start with next to no interface of any sort either
>basically a survival sim at first
>You gradually develop skills and abilities, enabling you to explore further.
>Also enabling you to evolve into various forms
>Slowly discover more and more of a vast fantasy world
>Interact with more and more intelligent beings as you grow in strength
>Eventually interact with humans(/humanoids)
>(either fighting/raiding/ambushing them or making a trade/name for yourself in one of their cities)
>Slowly discover more about your origins, and game-world lore

That's a neat idea. It would be like Rain World, only you're some kind of monster, and it would be styled as an rpg-metroidvania hybrid.
>>
>>174095546
So a mix between :
>Dark Souls' atmosphere
>Mount & Blade's open world
>Don't Starve for the survival
>Fallout/Elder Scrolls for the skill system

Shit, I'm hard.
And I'll really have to try Rain World and Hollow Knight.
>>
>>174095685
Now picture this:
>You are the last of your species from some foreign planet
>You can mate with any creature to create a hybrid
>These hybrids will be your offspring and when you die of various causes or age, you will take control of one of them
>>

Kinda like that game, Rogue Legacy?

That sounds as fun as that Konosuba Megaman game that's actually kicking my ass right now.
I'm so going to kick Megumin's ass once I reach her.

But wasn't there a game like that where you take control of your descendant if you die?
>>
>>174097129
>>174097326
>Descendants as "extra lives"
Although this is a nice and interesting concept, it would end up becoming a too major theme and part of the gameplay in a game like this, I think.
Not that it's inherently bad, but it does retract from an rpg experience by distancing you from your character.

Perhaps if you could "transfer" your soul or something to your offspring (as an ability gained after a while). Then the player wouldn't feel the jarring "oh, now I'm someone else"-feel making them relate less to their character.
>>
>>174097543
I guess so. And besides, it would allow NPCs to talk directly to the player instead of talking to the character we're just controlling most of the time.
I always wanted a game where the characters are talking directly to the extradimensional abomination controlling that body who's been running around killing people.
>>
>>174097543
Now see, I didn't have this issue when I played Rogue Legacy. You play as your descendants, but you feel no disjoint, even if they're a totally different class with dyslexia or irritable bowels or what have you. But I do see your point as well.
>>174097326
Yeah, I was thinking of the Creature Stage from Spore, where you take control of your offspring every time you die or evolve.
>>
>>174097746
What bothers me with Rogue Legacy is that you don't feel like you control your son/daughter. It may as well be a distant relative for all your know.
Massive Chalice has a better approach toward relatives.
>>
>>174097746
Yeah, Rogue Legacy is fun as hell (but then again it doesn't focus on immersion that the same way, say, Skyrim or Dark souls does).

>>174007670

>>
>>174098064
I really liked how Dark Souls tried to blend the gameplay and the story together. Pretty much everything makes sense in universe.
I wish more games tried that approach, instead of just making a hard as balls shitty game and pretending it's "like Dark Souls". Yes Oblitus and Malebolgia, I'm looking at you.
>>
>>174093427
>so while he seems extremely calm in the manga
In pretty much every non-fight scene, he has several internal thoughts (usually along the lines of "oh god the sluts are fighting again why do I deserve this"). In the first few chapters it's almost entirely just him, trying to think of how to deal with the situation and figuring out what sort of extent his powers are.
Does the novel have extended sections like that further into the story or something? Currently in the lizardfolk part it mostly focuses on them, so he hasn't even been on screen a lot of the time.
>>
>>174099879
During the opening, he's mostly confused in the manga (or at least come off as confused).
Meanwhile, in the novel, he's confused, but it also quickly turns into "what if they all decide to go after me?"

In the later chapters of the manga, his personality is a bit expanded, but at first, you don't really feel him panicking.

Are doujin games indies?

>>174102913
I honestly feel like that most people comparing other games to Dark Souls actually never played Dark Souls to begin with.
Dark Souls isn't hard. There are some parts that are bullshit (hitboxes, camera and lag, for example), but for the rest, it's just a question of logic. Once you learn the basics (watch around corner, watch out for suspicious stones, talk to the NPCs until they start repeating themselves, move slowly), it's actually very rewarding.
The first game caused me a lot of problems, but the second and third games were actually quite easy. Well, except the bosses. Fuck you Friede.

>(e.g. throw a rock at some part of it, cracking it; push on a lever; damage a control terminal; etc.)

>About the size of the slugcat, maybe a little smaller
>Ancient military/police/riot drone or something
>Cold, sleek yet utilitarian design
>Flies around slowly with an eerie sharp bright "scanner"
>Not immediately hostile, but very easily provoked, turning the lights red
>Scary mechanical chirp, red alert holograms flickering around it
>Will absolutely wreck and splatter any creature in the game in one shot with some horrifying sharp crack of lased light

>>
>>174132194
Hmm, maybe you're right. Still, I'd say that the basic framwork (as well the randomized elements in it) that Rain World posits probably has lead to a lot of various strategies and ways of handling problems that the developers didn't account for.

But the definition of "emergent gameplay" is probably pretty mechanical and rigid, yeah.. and probably more qualtitative in nature than I'm presuming here. I must admit I'm not too familiar with the concept technically

Not necessarily, it's just independent developers rarely have the financial power by themselves to make double or triple A titles. Nowadays, probably CD Projekt RED is the only real AAA indie developer.

Bungie also had massive potential back in the day (remember, HALO was a PC / MAC exclusive title!), then Bill needed a system seller for his new console and thus bought the whole company from A to Z.

The problem with literally definition of indies is that it doesn't reflect original intended use of the term. People don't give a shit who made the game, 1 guy or 200 man team. People don't give a shit about budget and where it came from.

Usually people would use "indie game" in a positive sense when they mean a game that takes risky deviations from well selling games/genres/mechanics/etc., because in AAA world publishers just might not want to bet their money on something that might not pay off. Which basically means indies == unorthodox games. But it's much easier to use and understand word "indie".

I hesitate to call it poor man's shovel knight since thats not really fair to it. But its got the same sort of sensibilities; ie an old school style of game with emphasis both on replicating both the gameplay and the graphics of those old NES and SNES games.

Its not as good as SK, but its still a worthwhile game.

But then epeli said it's common trash that should be everywhere from the start, because he didn't know it was not really in the experimental version at all.

But another item icon that got uploaded along with the lighter was a rolling pin I did not know what a rolling pin was but I finally googled it, and you know what? Lighters, fireplaces, rolling pins?

Difference between DooM spirtes and Bunker Punk sprites is that DooM sprites were based mostly from model photos and have "realistic" shading as a result. You can see individual details like muscles on Hell Knight's body because they all cast an actual shadow that follows laws of physics. Plus, each DooM spritesheet has multiple images of the same animation frame, which are just taken from different angle (excluding some stuff like death animation frames).

It's a lot more work and reasonable that Bunker Punks use simple hand-drawn sprites because you can just draw 2-3 frames by hand instead of making a full-blown model.

Today on "No-One Gives A Shit About This Game Except For Me", it turns out that buying maps is actually useful because it actually reveals locations for the whole run and not just the World that you're in currently.
I'm getting a lot better as well. I'm getting the hang of positioning better and taking advantage of back-stabbing as well being able to play a lot quicker.
I wish the Hero select page actually showed you each heroes starting equipment and spell buffs because there's actually a fair bit of variety among heroes in the same class play effectively.

Not so fun fact, this game uses the highest clock speed setting on the Switch meaning it uses the same amount of power draw as Breath of the Wild. I hope you enjoy three hour battery life on your roguelites.

>Take 7 hits
>Get to boss
>Adrenaline, gun queue, and gull's revenge
>Die
yea this mode can go fuck itself, one is fine, and even two isn't awful unless they're both horrid, but i'm not dealing with 3 of these things every room. I thought challenge was 1 a room and double challenge was 2 a room
>>
Mmmm. I tried Bunker Punks. It has potential, but the randomly generated aspect is obvious, and it suffers from many flaws that I'll try to list.
>numbers of weapons you can carry is limited by your upgrades, you press Tab to switch
>hitboxes are really small
>since there's a distance decay applied to damage, you want to get close
>shitty red effect around the screen when you get damaged, but doesn't actually tell you where the hit comes from
>the more wounded you are, the less you can see because who doesn't love a red filter
>the weapons are shits, graphically speaking, even Doom's weapons are better animated, and Doom is fucking old
>the enemies lack variety, and new enemies are introduced way too slowly
It suffers a lot from being compared to the reference, but I guess it's a decent way to spend some time.

>Niggas, I think we gonna cook.
I always liked being able to make unique food with unique bonuses in RPGs.

I remember the first Risen did cooking in a cool way- you could find food recipes that very extremaly powerful, either giving permanent stat bonuses or healing a lot of health, but all of the powerful foods required spices which were extremaly limited.

If you're correct and there will be cooking, I hope we will be able to make some unique foods that give more than just +1 to one attribute, since all the common foods are pretty easy to find in large quantites.

On my pistol build I had the +1 DEX from eel sandwiches active pretty much all the time.

Has Been Heroes.
A new roguelite from the developers behind Trine.
Battles are kind of like a mixture of tower defence and real time strategy (with pause) where you're constantly shuffling your heroes between lanes to optimise your damage output.
Overworld/dungeon navigation works in a similar manner to Darkest Dungeon where you select which node you travel to next and each node contains different stuff like battles, merchants, altars etc.
Find spells to cast during battle for ridiculous combos and items for permanent passive effects.
I definitely recommend playing it but the stupid cunts who made it didn't put out a demo or release it on GoG so you might have to wait until it goes on sale if the price seems steep.
I think there might be a Skidrow release though.

I bought it around four days ago and I've been spending most of my time playing it.

I'm all about dumping on people to "git gud", but Darkest Dungeon truly is an entry that deserves to be dumped on for crappy RNG bullshit followed up by painful punishment for being such a retarded idiot noob as to get bad rolls.

Yes I know you can hedge against it like any game, but, it's a matter of degree, and DD goes real retarded with it.
>>
>>174231754
There's "git gud" that makes sense, like Dark Souls or Monster Hunter, because you cannot beat a boss after getting a few hints, you need to figure it out by yourself, but in Darkest Dungeons, it's just "throw a 1d20, if 2+, you lose a hero and all the others are going nuts" and its shitty fanbase thinks that being unfair = being challenging.

Cooking is fun, I really liked it in Odin's Sphere as well. And having so many fishes, or carrying around raw Hopper meat with no way to eat them is such a waste.

But on the other hand that Lighter has an AP cost. If it had no use in combat, interacting with fireplaces probably would be just disabled, like how you can't use computers, or can't hack or lockpick.

That being said, unless Styg adds Floo Powder to Underrail, I can't even begin to imagine what use would fireplaces serve in combat.

>crappy RNG
There is literally nothing wrong with RNG in DD. The whole point of the game is risk managment.

You are supposed to fuck up and lose form time to time and even then there are multiple examples of people who finsihed the entire game without losing a single hero.

It's like complaining about RNG in fucking Texas Holdem, it's a vital component the game is based on.

No, the problems with DD are the extremaly repetitive gameplay, insane grind for the same of grinding alone, extreme punishment of losing high level heroes in the form of even more grind, rehashed enemies and no variety in the dungeon layouts whatsoever (except for 3rd level of DD).
>>
>>174231458

>>
>>174261114
>But there's actually a gameplay?
You assign dwellers to different rooms and check the game every X hours or so to harvest your crops, I mean, collect energy/food/water
When you send someone on expedition you literally just check on him constantly to see if it's time to recall him, or if you'll ignore that dweller for a while, he will die in the wasteland
There's very little interaction with the game itself

I say I 'grew up' with PS2, but that was one of the ones I just spent more time on. Plus the stupid amounts of shovelware meant games were cheap. Considering my family have never actually been rich, I had a weird amount of consoles, nearly all hand-me-downs from my brother (who must have got them second-hand in the first place).
Megadrive was the first one I got and I only ever had Sanic 2, 688 Attack Sub never figured out how to play that, Columns, World Cup Italia '90 and Super Hang On (last three on one cart).
I'm pretty sure Sanic, Columns + Super Hang On are what made me appreciate soundtracks.

What are the arguments against it?

>>174288140
It does take a shitload of money and that stuff is limited since monsters don't respawn, but I still like it. At least money has a purpose, unlike in Diablo or Grim Dawn.
>>
>>174284593
>The only reason opening locks and dialog are unavailable in combat is because they would take longer than a full turn.
I'm pretty sure Burglar makes hacking and lockpicking take less than 5 seconds.
>>
> Stardew Valley
just got into this game so chill,
what else there is to it? mods and what not
I bet there are some mods with adult content, aren't there?
>>
>>174288374
The arguments against it include gigantic lore dumps around every corner. Clicking on things often result in many paragraphs describing something. Basically some people view it as TL;DR and in the case of this game I do think they have a valid point.

They also believe that there are inherent flaws in the combat system. Tanks can hold aggro and not do much else. DPS characters die in seconds if they take damage and basically kite anything that doesn't get aggroed by the tank. Characters that try to be good at more than one thing are generally bad at all the things they do.

Also, there are complaints about spells and how offensive spells are far superior to defensive spells. Additionally there are spells that you can use once every rest that can basically win battles on the spot and you can cheese the game by resting after every right to regain said spells.
>>
>>174288374
Money actually has a purpose in Grim Dawn.

Faction gear, good greens from merchants, crafting and respeccing are all rather expensive. Especially respeccing, the cost can reach some really crazy numbers.
>>
>>174288732
*after every fight

>>174288374
>It does take a shitload of money and that stuff is limited since monsters don't respawn, but I still like it. At least money has a purpose, unlike in Diablo or Grim Dawn.
what do you mean? in game money?
the game itself doesn't seem to be that pricey, and often on good value sale
>>
>>174288732
>too much lore
Not much of an argument, that sounds too subjective. But then again, I'm a huge fan of Dark Souls' approach, so I like having a lot of lore. As long as it's not EYE where you have one room with all the lore and you're expected to read all of it in one go...

>combat complains
That one sounds reasonable, but I haven't met that problem so far.
Maybe I'm just bad, but everyone seems to go after my priest rather than after my soldier.

>spells complains
Can't say much about that one either, I don't know enough about spells balance.
>you can cheese the game by resting after every right to regain said spells
However, I can tell that one is retarded. Baldur's Gate allowed the same crap, but had no limit on camping. In Pillars of Eternity, you actually use material when camping, so you can't just go in a room, use all your spells, return to the other room, rest, and repeat.
No, they actually tried to fix it.

>>174288743
The stuff I'm actually dropping at level 50 is better than what I can buy, and is free.
Dunno how respeccing works, but so far, it's 25 iron for each point.

>>174288917
Yeah, ingame money. In Diablo 2, unless you gambled or needed potions, you rarely bought anything.
In Grim Dawn, you have more uses for money (such as potions), but it still accumulates quickly.

Not necessarily an obscure game, but pretty old, Seven Kingdoms 2. I already mentioned that game on /civ4xg/, but I don't know if it suits /indie/ more. Or if I should move it to /vr/ already.

It's a strategy game where you pick between two factions : humans and frythans.
The humans have religion, war machines, research, taxes, and cities to take care of.
The frythans just get ressources by killing and enslaving neutral towns.
You also get minor factions that unlock new units. For example, Egyptians are OP, because their god raises their population, while the Chinese god just attacks.

The interesting part is that factions aren't set in stone, it's perfectly possible to have a multicultural empire. Hell, it's even encouraged, because taking over neutral towns is better than waiting for the one you have to grow.
It's also possible to start a game as a Frythan, have a traitor surrendering to you, and start building human buildings and play like a human.
>>
>>174317245
let's just say that the best parts of these gamey LNs/WNs is almost DELIBERATELY not the gamey parts.
>>
>>174322868
Only because they have no idea how to minmax. In Konosuba, Kazuma just go for a stealth archer build, so he can't take a single hit, and in Kumo, she figures out too late what skills are really OP and then she starts being really passive.

>>
>>174322967
Kumo goes out of its way to shit on the idea of stats and balance with the broken stat growth skills, Sin/Virtues, and outright ignoring stats period.

Even working within the system ignoring the deliberate exceptions, having multiple tiers of stat growth skills that exponentially affect stats just plain makes the game pointless for people who don't specifically train them. It encourages only a single type of play(work out as a baby) and makes it the objective best method to get stronger. That is a HORRIBLE way to design a game.

As a setting, the system is not sufficiently integrated into society. The religion aspect is good and they CLAIM to have accounted for it within society, but the actual examples are lacking. It's also unbelievable that only kumo/old mage guy ever tried to do manual magic, people will eventually gravitate to trying all sorts of things out.

As a fangame, you won't be able to implement all the cool outside system tricks like manual magic, it's simply a mechanical limitation of whatever practical medium you choose to create the game. But without those, what part exactly are you trying to capture? Fast-paced monster combat with levelup healing and continual evolution? We have roguelikes that do that.

Why do so many people say that Hollow Knight has hard sections?
I just finished it (69% completion) and I cannot relate to the sentiment.
There were 2 boss fights that gave me some form of trouble I think, where I needed a lot of tries, but none of the platforming was particularly difficult, and quite frankly I was severely disappointed at how easy the final boss was.

I have yet to visit Queen's Gardens and that Infected map, didn't bother exploring when I came across it.
Overall this game was amazing though, and I really mean that. If it can make someone like me, who hates metroidvanias like hell, play it to the end, I consider that a huge success.
I only have a few gripes with the game, and those are nitpicking at best. I played the game blind until just past the first half, then I got stuck. I spent a lot of time checking every corner on the map for areas I'd missed.
After an hour or so I just consulted a walkthrough, and then kept that bookmarked and always double checked from then on whether I missed something in the area I just went through. Turns out that helped quite a bit.
There was one particular time where I was required to enter an area that was accessed through a breakable wall. There is no clue on how to find that spot afaik, and I would probably have spent hours running around like an idiot again.
Now maybe you can chalk that up to the game genre or my inexperience with it, because I never play these kind of games. I don't require handholding and being pointed in a direction constantly, but I hate it when non-optional progression
is hidden behind some obscure shit that's hard to notice.

Apart from that, I had a grand time. The controls are super tight, but I wish the Nail combat mastery worked different. I never needed to charge my weapon, because it felt uncomfortable to hold down the button while moving around,
and it felt completely pointless. Is there a single point in the game where I need to whirlwind? Probably not.

>The stuff I'm actually dropping at level 50 is better than what I can buy, and is free.
It's not frequent, but merchants do have a chance of selling double affix greens which have the potential to be the best items in the game if you get lucky.

And when they do sell them, they are extremaly expensive, up to +100k iron bits. I seriously recommend taking a quick look at greens merchants offer when you got to sell your loot.

Traders is Steps of Torment sell blueprints for relicts and components, traders in Bastion of Chaos and Blood Grove sell monster infrequents. Those are not that cheap either.

Faction gear is not the best, but it's perfect when you get unlucky and can't find anything better at the moment. Faction merchants also sell blueprints for relicts and rare components such as silvercore bolts etc and their cost isn't low either.

Crafting is a huge money sink that is well worth it. Crafting items with scrap and money is basically the equivalent of gambling in D2, you can get a good double affix green that way.

Crafted blue/purple items you have blueprints for are a straight upgrade compared to looted ones since they also get smith bonuses.

Crafting rare components is great, so is exchanging hearts/blood/brains

The smith at Tyrant's Hold on Elite/Ultimate difficulty crafts purple items of a chosen category (ranged/melee/caster weapons, armor, accesories) for 8 hearts/blood/brains and 75k iron bits.

Money has tons of uses in Grim Dawn, you're just not seeing it.

>Dunno how respeccing works, but so far, it's 25 iron for each point.
It gets progressively more expensive the more points you respec. It's not an issue if you only make small adjustments, but can reach ridiculous numbers if you are trying to build something entirely different.

>>174336938
>Yeah but faction merchants have fixed loot.
That's kind of the point, they are supposed to sell solid gear you can use if you are unlucky with drops.

>Oh, about Steps of Torment, I got the thingy for the Outcast, but how do I get out?
Etiher kill the final boss or die.
>>
>>174337356
Oh, so they're more failsafe in case you're unlucky. That explains why they sell decent stuff (even if my stuff is now better than them).
Doesn't explain why you have basic trader that sell very basic stuff, but that's in every RPG.

The basic stuff can be useful at normal difficulty, yellow weapons with %attack speed and bonus damage for example can be pretty good if you can't drop anything better.

Other than that, double greens.
>>
>>174338073
I mean the normal merchant on normal difficult. They sell basic magical item that you usually stop using after 5 minutes playing.

Why would I need a magical item if killing a bunch of monsters gives me XP, money, AND a better item than the one I'd be paying for?

Well, at least the faction items make sense unlike in Diablo where I bought nothing in the entire game.
>>
>>174338312
>I mean the normal merchant on normal difficult. They sell basic magical item that you usually stop using after 5 minutes playing.
I'm playing a new build right now, lvl 32, just got out of Steps of Torment.

I'm using a yellow rifle with 15-28 physical damage bonus and 22% attack speed bonus I bought from a merchant and it's not a first bought weapon I'm using. I seriously doubt I will replace it anytime soon, 22% attack speed is a fuckton.

Yellows can be pretty good on Normal, it's all a matter of a good combination of affixes with high values. You will most likely stop using them on Elite because you are bound to find a good green/blue eventually, but they certainly don't stop being useful after 5 minutes.
>>
>>174338830

What he should do rather than bitch is just steal the fan subs and sell them back as official subs. That way his game is translated for no cost, he gets a wider audience and the subbers can't do shit because they were illegally sharing the game regardless.

Well, Darkest Dungoen kinda does that.

Granted, it pretty much ends up as second health bad and tends to make very little sense most of the time; getting mortally wounded is less stressful than walking through a dark corridor, a madman screaming garbage at you is more stressful than fighting literal lovecraftian horrors, people get stressed to hell when food runs out even though they ate a fucking feast a moment ago, etc.

Choice of Games publish usually pretty low quality CYOAs, even though some of them are alright. You can download the script they use to make their shit, and if you write something you can publish it through them. This usually means your shit will go on the "Hosted games" section, and it's up to you whether you make it free, or set a price for it. If you pick the latter, you will get a small slice of the profits, but no other compensation otherwise. On the other hand if you make it big enough to become one of their in-house writers, you can pick whether you want the cut for your CYOAs, or take the guaranteed $5k instead.

So anyone can do it. Since the quality in general really is pretty shit, your writing skill or lack of it should not hold you back. Even though you probably won't get much out of it unless you get to be part of their sekrit club, putting some trash together to earn a few bucks shouldn't be too hard.

Shit, they even have a competition right now:
https://www.choiceofgames.com/contest/

The good news is that they publish their carp on basically every possible platform. iStore, Google store, Steam, Amazon, and they have an already existing audience who eat it all up. The bad news is that the cut you get is not that big, and their stuff is so primitive their games are comically easy to pirate. Yet somehow they keep making money, so there.

Their better CYOAs actually come from the hosted ones. Guns of Infinity is good, and Magikiras was pretty decent as well. Writing branching stories would be too hard, anon. You'll get railroaded every time, no matter what. Only cosmetic choices are allowed, although sometimes it's not that bad.
>play Kung-Fu
>every time the game suggests gender equality you can shut it down with a "lol no, not in muh Ancient China" option

Although there was one, Wizardry Level C, which had legitimate branching for the final third of the game.
>>
>>174383371
is it even really railroading when it gives you the opportunity to do a thing and then just slaps it out of your hand to go 'no you're doing this part of the plot now'
it's more like giving you three paths but if you go down any of them but the left you just get kicked in the nuts and dragged onto it

>is it even really railroading when it gives you the opportunity to do a thing and then just slaps it out of your hand to go 'no you're doing this part of the plot now'
that is exactly what railroading is
>>
>>174382158
Oh, Uncle Works for Nintendo. Neat little Twine thing.
>>
Rain World is shit.

It looks damn nice but that's where the merits end.

It plays like a bad metroidvania with only one frankly retarded mechanic controlling map advancement, no character development at all and it never gets any better.

It has godawful amount of consolitis, you can't even open options during gameplay or navigate menus with mouse for fuck's sake.

I can't believe how hyped it was here for a while. Fuck slugcats, fuck five pebbles, fuck moon, this was a waste of time.
>>
>>174385585
Go play it and tell us.
>>
>>174386401
Give me 14 hamburger tokens and I'll tell you all
>>
>>174385361
Yup, that's railroading. It's mostly unavoidable if you want to keep the workload managable, so it's acceptable to a degree as long as the game at least makes some effort to mask it. For example Orpheus Ruse was written skillfully enough that during the first three or four chapters you might not even realize that not a single choice you made changed anything about the story, not unless you replay it. But many others don't even bother to keep up the illusion for one playthrough, like your example. And it can be really jarring, even more than in a vidya, where you are at least in control of something, combat usually. In a CYOA constant obvious fake choices and railroading is the worst thing they can do, because making choices was the only reason anyone even picked that shit up.

I've done literally every quest in underrail, I know I'm about to go into deep caverns. Heard it's basically a point of no return. Should I sit on the save until the expansion or should I just finish the game and make a new character for when the expansion comes out?
>>
>>174387460
It's a point of no return only in the sense that it's a final dungeon you can't leave until you kill the final boss. After that you can pick up where you left off, so you can do the expansion with that save if you want.

It's a mid-game expansion, but you are probably already close to the level cap, so no point in waiting. You'll be overleveled for it no matter what, and you won't be able to experiment with the new skills if you only have veteran levels left.
>>
>>174386325
>you can't even open options during gameplay
this is probably by design to force HIGH INTENSITY
>or navigate menus with mouse
this is valid

it's a fun game to me but most of the fun is in the atmosphere rather than the gameplay. it's pretty clear that they made 'feel like a slugcat' the priority when it came to controls rather than 'be fast and responsive'.

I can't think of any similar rogue lites, but nuclear throne is a game that I really like and I also really loved gungeon and legacy.

send help

also attacking feels so fucking difficult in this game, like half the time when I click I don't even swing, or I just walk over to them instead of swinging. I wish I could press space or like, another keyboard button to attack

I actually looked it up, pressing F autoattacks

Well, if that's the case, you could've tried cooking it. Cooked monster meat still lowers your health and sanity, but not nearly as much as normal monster meat.

>Probably not
Why not?

It was supposed to be released in the first half of 2017 before Styg realized it's going to be much bigger than he initially planned.

I don't think he went overboard so much it will take more than about 6 additional months of development. I have a feeling it will be released around december.

>You're overthinking it
Happens more often than I like to admit.

But I can't fully buy this explanation. >>174288482 is right, with Burglar hacking and lockpicking take less than a turn. Same for planting traps with Trap Expert.

Eating food or using shit like the tracking device has no AP cost and can be done in turn-based mode, but not in combat. Repairing items and using the omni-tool have an AP cost and can be done in turn-based mode, but not in combat. Same for mounting or dismounting the fishing rod, can be done in both real time and turn-based, but not in combat. None of these take more than a turn.

Releasing the spawn takes less than a turn, but can only be done in real time. And as for dialog, you can't even try in turn-based or combat which is fine. You can try with computers though, and the game will happily eat your 15 APs while it cheerfully informs you that you are shit out of luck.

I'm not sure why we are even ruling out Q3. Not making the end of Q2 doesn't mean the delay is necessarily going to be a big one.
>>
>>174427784
>I'm not sure why we are even ruling out Q3.
Just a hunch. When it comes to Styg delaying something it's safe to assume it will take longer than expected.
>>
>>174428249
True dat. Expect nothing and be pleasantly surprised is probably the right stance to take. And as Styg said, until he says otherwise always assume we have time for at least one more full playthrough.

Megabyte Punch
Fighting/platformer (think Smash Bros but with a story) where you are a robot that can swap out body parts to change attacks or strengths.
Also change colours if you feel like it.

Lots of punching, the bosses are actually decently difficult and the music's good. Lots of maze-like areas in the levels though, they can be a bit confusing to get around.

I haven't played Don't Starve in a while, did Shipwrecked turn out any good?

I still haven't experienced everything in RoG so I might go back and do that before doing anything with shipwrecked.

I kinda like it. But I'm extremely casual when it comes to Don't Starve.
It replaces a few things, adds a few others, and the games feels different as a whole.
