It honestly depends on a per person basis by what you can and cannot tolerate.
The gameplay is pretty good as far as combat goes (and gets better when you get more abilities)
the writing and story is a really inconsistent mess, as well as the character interactions, you'll like some and hate others.
Quests are ok as long as you ignore the lesser tasks ( which are literal mmo fodder garbage) and stick to main missions/personal quests

Help me out here, /meg/. Should I just pull the trigger and go for it? I want a seriously enjoyable/awesome first experience, and I feel like the best way to assure that is to wait for all the patches to come out.

Realistically, they could be patching the game for next year however, and while I like Mass Effect, anytime I've told myself "wait a year and then try it" my hype is so dead by the time I pick it up and I can't even get through the game. This is what happened with Dragon Age: Inquisition for me. I waited for the GOTY edition, then never got passed the 30% mark or so.

What is the "sweet spot" for purchasing Bioware games? Should I just get it now, enjoy a playthrough, then pick up all the DLC later and enjoy my "complete with DLC and patches" playthrough some time a few months down the road?

Should I just wait for 2 months for the "major" patches to be released and go for it? Aaryn Flynn seemed to imply that the majority of the patching would only occur in the first two months when he stated:

Every time I replay this game, I encounter more bugs/issues/glitches. I'm on my third playthrough now, I'd say wait the 2 months, then go for it if you are still interested.

The game is fun but the bugs (incompleteable quests, missing dialogue, improper quest triggers and quest order, etc.) pull you out of the experience. I'm not sure how much they can fix in 2 months, but it will be a better game than what we have today. 2 months will fly by anyways.

I really wish that there would have been an extremely powerful new form of Mass Accelerator cannon that was capable of piercing Reaper armor, but had some sort of extremely dramatic drawback, or vulnerable weakness, like requiring an excess amount of Eezo, or power to operate or something.

Illium was alright, but the area was just too small and too cramped. It should've been more open, more buildings towering next to you, more neonsigns, more destinctive places.
They should've made an upper class place where everythings clean and tidy with patches of grass and trees with the same look as in the game, and a lower area where it's dirtier and everyone isn't wearing dresses and suits. Like the more industrial-looking area of Miranda's loyalty mission, but not as clean.
Rain would be a big plus, too.

Later on you will have a choice that ends in the death of one squadmate or another. Both are useful, and both fill the same narrative role in ME2&3, so whoever you pick is up to personal choice, and if you're romancing one of them. However, one will become an actual character while the other descends into total bitchiness, so choose carefully.

Talk to everyone.

In ME1 and especially 2, squadmates will have some kind of personal mission to gain their loyalty. In 1 it's more of a side thing, I recommend doing them but they're not essential. In 2 they're CRUCIAL. Do all of them. If you don't, they will almost certainly die at the end of the game. Occassionally, after doing loyalty missions for two squadmates, they may enter an argument, that unless you have a high Paragon or Renegade score, will end up with one remaining unloyal (noted by the the absence of an orange circle below them in the Squad Select screen), even after doing their mission.

For certain squadmates, what happens in said missions, beyond them being completed or not, can and will affect shit in ME3. i.e. Erasing some important data will end in the death of an important person and the loss of some War Assets because of this (you'll learn about those in 3).

Squadmates will sometimes have unique dialogue depending on who you bring to a mission. So bring people who make sense, like an agent for an organization on a mission for said organization.
