No, it was never like that. It's just for a single PvP gamemode (WvW) like I mentioned, and it sort of affects instancing. But this game has "megaservers", which means you'll be taken to the most populated instances of a game. And if you're in a party/squad, you can join other people's instances, so you can do guild missions and other things with HOPE or whatever other guilds just fine.

There used to a couple of guilds that specialized in doing this closer to launch. A high profile streamer is probably the best way to go once you find someone to trade with.

That's correct for open world and when you're using the LFG tool or guilds to find people to play with. Population varies in WvW depending on the server, there's ones with low to high pops and they offer different angles in gameplay, you'll find more zergs in high ones, and more roaming in smaller ones from what I've seen.

Overall, this game still has enough people playing that you can do anything at a reasonable time.

It is when literally every enemy spams it in a way that is clearly supposed to be annoying. It's not an environmental concern - it'd make sense if you slipped on a lake or the water frozen you, especially if you had a way of countering it.

But that doesn't exist here. You could take a torch but it's limited. You could take condi cleanse, but it's limited. And there's about five million mobs with an aggro range five times normal and that's not counting the ones that will -literally- spawn out of the ground when you've killed their buddies and then have the gall to fly off at 2% hp while evading your attacks and leaving chill fields everywhere.

Literally everything in Bitterfrost is designed not to challenge you, but to annoy you. None of the enemies are challenging. They're just annoying. It isn't hard to kill svanir or icebrood griffons but the griffons seem to exist for no reason other than eat up time with how often they fly away despite being a melee enemy.

After a certain point you realize you're only in BF for the rewards, because it is the most profitable zone. This isn't fun. It isn't hard. It's just annoying. It's a shit design for a game. Only a masochist boots up a game just to be annoyed.

Bitterfrost Frontier is a small zone to begin with and has a night cycle meta event where icebrood come out to play during some blizzard or whatever. A real annoyance would be perma chill through an environmental effect and constant 90% slowed movement just by stopping in the middle of a skid through a frozen surface. Think the area around the EotN in GW1 which had a more potent chill and could be applied instantly from a distance.

All you have to worry at Bitterfrost Frontier is dodging and running away from icebrood wolves, dodging the leap from a icebrood kodan and running in a zigzag to avoid their rush, and block/dodge an ice elemental's freezing projectile. There's also the little gusts that freeze you if you get too close or get smacked by a slow but precise gust attack. Unless you're aggroing large groups on purpose, not dodging, and intentionally running into chill fields it shouldn't be a problem. What would be a real shame is if these enemies didn't chill and freeze you for staying still. Imagine harvesting winterberries and brushing off an icebrood troll's red circle knowing it made you bleed a little instead or something. Spiders and griffons spawned, oh well let them smack me around a little so I can harvest more winterberries.

Whenever I need winterberries I clear enemies out because they'd beat on me and chill me otherwise. Any build is useful in the overworld so equipping condition cleanse, blocks, stun breaks, etc instead of running a meta fractal/raid build out of laziness should resolve any bad scenarios where chill duration stacks to horrid levels of slowness.

At least you can dodge the chill application and deal with the enemies that apply them. White Mantle Clerics, however.. unless you're packing unblockable CC they'll constantly survive and blind you. Now THAT is an annoying waste of time.

Since my original post is about GW1 environmental effects, all my basis needs to be is video games and prior mechanics. The logic here is that as someone succumbs to the cold, they become sluggish and less alert of what's happening to them and their surroundings. Shivering is the natural response to being cold while not shivering under such extreme temperature is a sign that you're about to freeze to death. Cold damage and chill from necromancer and elementalist magic reflect on that observation. You move slower, your cool downs are longer, yet untraited chill doesn't damage people.

The Far Shiverpeaks is a pretty big deal, anon. A blizzard or snow storm that far north should cripple anyone's movement even if they were covered in warm clothes. Not only does the Bitter Cold area look like a treacherous arctic hell hole, it's a peek into the north where Jormag resides. A safe haven for Jormag's icebrood. No doubt it'll get colder and colder the further north we go.

I'm not going to start a GW wiki linkfest, but Diamondshard Mist and Icy Ground are exactly what I was talking about.

VW itself probably takes like 15-20 minutes at most if you have people that know what to do and don't fail. The foothold portion is what takes the longest and you cant do VW until that and the breach events are over. Pre-HoT you could always just do VW quickly and then search the LFG and a new map would already be starting VW.

Thief is top tier PvE DPS right now.
Don't WvW in zerker armor unless you're really good. Remember that when you die, you rally your enemies so if you go down like a sack of shit in team fights you're not only being dead weight on your own team but also actively helping the enemy team. That's why tanky builds are the king of WvW right now, chances are they'll just outheal you for long enough that you die to all the shit being flung around.

I'm a new player playing revenant and I just hit 80. Naturally I want to unlock Herald and gliding.

What is the way going forward? Do the story quest and let it lead me right? The last one I did was about swimming an underwater temple.

If it's any consolation, HoT's story is far better written and presented right up until the very end. They did away with the awkward portrait cutscenes and most things happen in-world, and in general it flows a lot easier.
It's definitely not as good as most single player games, though. By current MMO standards it's acceptable.
It's worth noting that the vanilla story was conceived like a decade ago, and the budget totally ran out towards the end, so it doesnt really hold up very well right now.

If you want to be absolutely meta you should be in melee range all the time anyways.

Since you're even asking this I'll assume you don't really care about minmaxing. Melee is plenty usable in open world and PvP (sword Mainhand, greatsword is great fun but not meta anywhere due to its defensive nature), but in PvE the only melee set you should ever be using is an Axe/Torch condition build. It's not tip top dps but it's up there.
The main idea behind the build is to have an axe mainhand on your first weapon set and a torch offhand as your second set so that you can weapon swap to the exact same weapons. You then use Quick Draw on your fire field for extra burns.

Anet won't do that, because its something that other MMOs do that works.

Anet will make it so that you have to right click to open an options menu, scroll down to "enter game" and click it... only to get "Server is full at this time, please try again later".

The only way to get in will be to constantly keep opening this menu, scrolling, clicking, then repeating until you get in.

What are the odds of ANet fixing the rune/sigil problem with legendaries right now?
There's literally no reason to not allow players to just slot any rune/sigil on demand a la sPvP, by the time you've sunk thousands into a legendary you deserve to not have to spend another 10g on a sigil.
It's not like it affects the market for runes or sigils either, 90% of the time you buy the superior ones, slot them to the ascended gear, and never buy another one again.

I'm not that fresh of an 80, I just didn't train any disciplines leveling up and I've been playing on and off since then. Only now that I've been looking into ascended gear did I notice that training a discipline might have been a good idea.

I have truckloads of higher tier crafting materials, but they are useless to me until I level up a discipline high enough to make use of them.

Weapons can be obtained through the specialization collections, armor is a little more difficult these days but you can get them through raid rewards and several various collections.
Your main focus should be weapons and trinkets, though. Armor is only necessary for high tier fractals, even in raids you dont need ascended armor.
Trinkets are super easy to obtain, you can farm them through the new LS maps or use laurels or guild commendations on them.

Crafting gear is definitely the most straightforward method these days, but it's not your only choice if you just hate crafting.
If you're patient and just want to play the game, find a decent raiding team and cap out your magnetite shards each week until you can buy the gear you need. Once you're through the door you'll never worry about getting ascended gear ever again.

It should be noted that the stat difference between exotic and ascended is very, very small, to the degree that a good player in exotics will still vastly outperform an okay player in ascended. The main draw to ascended gear is so you can add infusions for high level fractals.
So I'm not saying not to get a crafting discipline leveled, I'm just saying that there's no need to rush if you don't want to.

I don't mind leveling up a discipline. It's a refreshingly low intensity activity and gives me incentive to properly explore the zones I pretty much rushed through when leveling. I realize the stat disparity between exotics and ascended is pretty small, but it's the looks I'm mainly after. Gotta get that proper revolver to complete the outlaw look. Armor is probably a different story though, as you said.
