The place where the system really shines though is the fundraising. There's such a fucking rush when the entire enemy team getting to attack basically means death and you're pulling 5k+ each time you squeeze them. Bonus points if you haven't come across a safe room in 30 minutes.

There's very little cover in that area as well so all of the "stealth" is basically just wait until the enemies walk past you.

Ryuji can be loud, but his heart is in the right place. His soft spot for his mom, and the background with his father are really well executed to be honest, and I think the whole 'mommy's boy' thing is a good way to accompany the rest of his attitude.
The whole "TO GET FAMOUS" thing doesn't last the whole game and he cools down on that front, it's just a flaw they intentionally explore with him. He's not selfish, I think that's pretty obvious from the beginning with how he doesn't really ever let revenge be the reason for going after Kamoshida, but can't bear seeing other students like the volleyball team and Anne fall victim to him.

Exploring the whole 'popularity going to their head' thing was necessary in a game like this which is partially based around the group's rise to fame, and Ryuji had to be the one to fill that role, but he does improve.

Okay we're gonna really have to disagree here. Ryuji has always got the MC's back, like, fucking always. I am a tad biased though since I fucking hated Yosuke. Him being dumb isn't much of a problem for me either, and he admits he's not smart in his co-op and in the main story a fair few times. The only moments where he really exhibits stupidity are clearly for the sake of making a scenario that wouldn't have otherwise happen actually happen, rather than to make him actually seem dumb.

Agreed, I don't understand the hate for Ryuji. The Phantom Thieves are basically superheroes and it's natural that there would be someone who wants respect. Ryuji was just the guy saddled with having to fill that role, and it makes sense when you realize that he has never been respected in his whole fucking life. It was either Ryuji has to deal with it, or they might have tried to force it on Joker, and they couldn't do that.

Also, Yosuke? I feel like the Yosuke shit would be tolerable if he actually ended up having the gay stuff in the final game, since then it could be explained as him being insecure about being in the closet himself. But he wasn't; he was just a fucking jerk.
Frankly the Morgana and Ryuji stuff is miles better because it's actually fucking addressed in the game instead of just being there like with Yosuke/Kanji to fill the "rivalry" quota. And with Ryuji and Morgana it actually feels like they are friends, especially after Morgana returns to the group. I've not been playing with the dub, but whenever Ryuji's JP VA says something back to Morgana it sounds more like he's accepting what he says as truth and just laughing about it, but feels obliged to sound riled up to an extent. Not sure if that carries across to his English VA but from what I heard of it I actually really like his English VA anyway. When Morgana says stuff to Ryuji it feels partially like he's just joking, and partially like he's just trying to look tough, and his confidant pretty blatantly makes it clear Morgana has serious self esteem issues, so it's pretty in-keeping with his character. But with Yosuke he was just being an irrational dick and it didn't feel like him and Kanji were on good terms at all.

The writers probably felt a bit guilty though, hence the cruise ship scene where he saves everyone's asses. Their roles in the story being similar mean nothing when the characters and their arcs are nothing alike.
