Here's a programming question for y'all.

So I'm making a script that draws a 'room' on a grid.
It goes through a nested for loop, designating each square as floor from 0 to x and 0 to y, each repetition it also checks to see if it is either 0 or has reached x, and builds a wall in the appropriate location. For instance if I plug in x and y to be 5, it builds fig 1.

In fig 2, I have mapped every possible combination of doors into and out of the room, assuming doors are only ever placed once and in the centre a wall with an odd numbered length.
My question is as follows:

Is there a mathematical model to cut out the walls by adding and subtracting the values to determine which doors to place, without writing 16 individual if statements / a large case statement?
I know I can do it with if statements, I just feel there might be some clever trick I'm unaware of.

It's not very mathematical, but you could just rip your 4-bit number into four individual bits, each designating whether or not a certain wall has a door in it. That way you only have four if-statements.

I was using the fact that zero is false and anything not zero is true in an if-statement. This mightn't be true in your language so you might need to add "!= 0" to the end.

Started some improvements for terrible platformer 2. Double height player, and some physics improvements. Need to look at introducing varied tiles, and some more advanced things like one way platforms and probably ramps.

there is some ambiguously written CP laws (America's CP laws are only slightly less vague than Australia's) which a couple people with bad legal defense got caught up and one (singular) was a proper trial that the overzealous judge got called out by the entire western world for being retarded.
Canada has an actual law on it i believe.

also more than a few American cases have had "fictional CP" tacked on to normal CP legal cases to legitimize the practice (America is actually in more danger than AU in this situation as theres many many cases of precedent built up using this tack on method). American CP cases already get larger sentences than actual child molestation offenses so watch out when the REEEEE child protection groups make the push to transition to prosecuting art.

I'm still trying to come up with gameplay for my game while I come up with the more technical stuff (building the world in 3d space, networking, other backend components)

So far:
>Dungeon levels will have 20-30 rooms, and expand to more rooms are you pass more levels (pic related, 150 rooms generated)
>Rooms can have stuff randomly generated within themselves (not a big deal, but worth noting)
>Don't have to visit every room to complete
>To move onto the next "level" you need to defeat the boss room, which will be locked behind stuff in that level.
>Different rooms can have puzzles and components linked to each other, so things aren't just isolated to a single room necessarily
>Game will be online (peer hosted servers), and difficulty will scale to some degree with more players. Not putting a hard cap on number of players, but balancing for 4-6.

I haven't decided on what I want the combat/gameplay to be, but I have a few ideas.

I'll wait until I'm further along in the development process to start in on it, plenty of stuff to work on until then

After almost a year of constant progress posting I gotta admit this project hasn't gathered any attention at all.

I understand that people aren't particularly hot for King's Field, but it really makes me wonder if it makes any sense to continue on this.

Matters get worse when you think about greenlight going down. This is actually bringing sweat to my brow. I gotta get this thing out now or never, cause establishing a business (for steam direct) is near impossible around here, due to enormous costs.

Then again, what's a game's worth if no one wants to play it anyway?

check out the PS2 game Ring of Red, it's a turn-based version of what you described.

in that game, fast-moving infantry complements the slow-moving mechs, you need both or you'll lose quickly

the kind of support crew you attach to the mech also matters: if you put riflemen, they contribute to the attack. if you put mechanics, the mech can self-repair, etc.

honestly, the idea sounds cool, I can see it working.

my impression, the gist of it is something people have already seen (fantasy first-person hack-and-slash), so there's not much to comment on, at least at the moment.

I remember you said it's sort of steampunk/victorian so if you show more of that aspect (guns? tesla cannons? if that's appropriate for your setting) people might ask you more about it. the different kind of enemies, factions, etc. I hope you do have some world/lore planned for this and not just combat all throughout.

personally, I'm not fond of first-person melee. it's hard for me to judge distances, but there's lots of medieval first-person games, so I guess there's a market for it.

I want to make a space-ship management game, with exploring, commerce, etc.

I actually don't know much of what I'm doing, but the ship builder is working.
And the ship configuration is saved to a save file.
I'm using UE4, and I actually want the ships saved as xml though, so I can make the enemy ships and use them later.

Now I want to focus on the combat and make it fun, so I needed to say which ships are the players and which ones aren't, so I'll use factions also.

After I can make the combat relatively fun, I will post some screenshots. But until then this is like having no game at all.

* Make buzz saws rotate faster, perhaps add a second layer of blades to make it look faster.
* Floor spikes are slowish... but don't give any warning other that popping up slowly. Perhaps try having them show up a little and then pop up much more quickly.
* Even the door could probably stand to open in a more interesting way. Rather than a straight lerp you could try having it speed up as it opens more.

I bought 1.4 from the Humble Bundle and I plan on making a Metroid-like after dropping my metroid fangame idea since the AM2R incident.

Implemented a couple more sword attacks, seen here (PP*PP string)

The more interesting progress is in blocking and parrying:

+You can now block projectiles
+You can do perfect dodges and blocks off of projectiles in addition to melee attacks
+You can now "parry" by blocking with perfect timing, just like a dodge. The opening animation for blocking now grants i-frames as well, meaning that while you can only block (long-term) in front of you, you can "parry" from any direction automatically.

+Added a "counter" ability. This is a separate unlock from Zen (Witch Time) meaning players who dislike Witch Time can use Counter alone instead, rather than the two being tied together. Counter just spawns a summoned fist for each enemy in-radius when a perfect dodge or block is executed, dealing damage and smash knockback.

It's got an interesting rhythm to it when used WITHOUT Zen, since it acts as a parry-into-counterattack without interrupting your main combat momentum too heavily. In conjunction with Block Stock you could use it for some really interesting combo flows, but I'm not really skilled enough to make that sort of use out of it just yet.

Used WITH Zen, it serves fairly little actual purpose except to clear a space around you when there's a lot of enemies nearby, since the Zen slowdown and lerp-step gives you a shitload of time to set up on an enemy post-dodge.

Personally (having been diagnosed with it) I found separating myself from distractions / meditation / building discipline through learning+applying simple measures... has gone a long way. No need for meds.

Go see a shrink and ask to be tested for ADHD. Questions are pretty obvious. Then ask for Vyvanse. It has done wonders for my concentration. Some people apparently have bad experiences with vyvanse and need to use concerta instead, and vice versa, but Vyvanse was the right drug for me.
Make sure to get plenty of protein when you take it so that the enzymes can activate to cleave off the lysine molecule. Also make sure you do cardio a few times a week - get a dog or something and take it on walks in the morning. If you don't have health insurance, there are sometimes perscription-discount cards. Sometimes they have them right at the pharmacy, and other times you gota get one online.

Oh and of course never exceed the dosage. Never take it too late in the day. You can actually separate the pill and use it as powder (ask your shrink for permission before you do that), mix it into water, and drink it. This helps if you want to take a nap in the middle of the day or something, because you can split your dosage up into two separate times. It may take time to figure out the right scheduling when it comes to using the powder instead of the entire pill.

That sounds more like a depression/anxiety spectrum disorder than ADHD. It's not a question of inability to focus, it's a question of having no desire or willingness to engage in something.

And yes, because depression manifests itself as lack of interest, it's VERY possible to find that even passive things like watching videos don't hold your attention. It's not lack of focus, it's lack of interest.

Modular assets, yes, but it's a question of how you choose to place them.

In Dixie, for instance, a fence is literally two meshes (the primary post and the endcap post; still have to do the crossbar) which are placed using ISMs along a spline at specified distances. Obviously, it wouldn't make sense from an iteration/design perspective to try and manually consruct each specific fence asset that I needed as a unique static mesh in my geometry editor.

BUT, it also wouldn't make sense to place each individual picket in the fence as its own actor with its own draw call, culling, etc. in the world.

If he was going to chunk those assets together into a single static mesh, he would be better served by just placing a series of static meshes (without all the trimmings and trappings of his "procedural" kit selection system) and merging them. If you're going to the trouble of creating an actor in UE4 which uses construction script to handle semi-procedural combination and placement of core level assets, it should be scalable TO the point of draw-call batch, such that the parts of a building can be more or less constructed as a single entity with ISMs rather than as a series of individual assets.

At least in my humble opinion.

Yes but low-dosage amphetamines can be taken for years, and since the drug is ineffective until activated by an enzyme, it means you don't need to continuously up the dosage to get the same effect. I feel like since it's time released and I know it, that I'm probably less compelled to take more than the prescribed dosage because I know it wouldn't change much; what I eat and whether or not I exercise seems to make it more effective rather than simply taking more of it.
I usually take 1 or 2 days off a week from the meds, which also helps in avoiding building up a tolerance.

Find a 32~ color palette online, use those colors. If you need a new color only make the color by mixing existing colors in the palette. Even if it's a 3D game, use this palette for shadows and lights and whatever else.
The number one biggest problem with shitty art is that the colors are godawful. Some very simple art can look good as long as the colors are good.

Keep art simple, focus on silhouettes and shapes, not details. This should be easier to achieve, and hopefully look good enough to market the game and maybe hire an artist to help polish the art.

Pretty happy because I achieved 2 of the things I planned yesterday:

The worst part is that I can see it as well. But I'm too deep down the shithole to fix it. I gotta make progress, so I have little time to craft an inspired idea. I can't work a week on a concept. Effectively that's a week spent with no output.

On a more serious note: Motivation is the least of my problems. I'm dealing with a crunch mode issue as described in >>173619140
I have very limited time and from that the base concepts of both visuals and gameplay suffer - even if they are technically well implemented, aesthetically they may be low quality. And that's the snag. Even if I think the output is (technically) passable, if nobody else likes it (from an aesthetic perspective) then the project is worthless. Period. That's just how it is.

Unfortunately that's how the resonance is outside of /agdg/. I mean come on: I literally can't get more than ~5 favorites on tumblr. And that's been going on for a while. A twelve-year-old drawing Sonic OC can get more than that.
As sad as it sounds, but if the style can't draw anybody in outside of these threads, the end product won't be able to get an audience and will be a failure that's not worth working on. At least not this way. Maybe as something on the side, with me dragging it along for 5 years, but that's really not what I wanna do.

So either some divine intervention penetrates my brain very soon and suddenly the characters I put out are more appealing or this will become a big problem. Potentially in the greenlight campaign, when nobody cares for the entry.
Could be worse though. Could be at release after two, three years of work.

Updating random areas instead of the whole grid turns out to feel quite wrong and glitchy especially in "swarm mode" no matter how I implement it (in the WebM it's two rectangles with random side sizes between 10 and 60 cells, but a more evenly distributed segmentation feels even worse). I think I'll still try using areas that correspond to the bounding rectangle of colonies, at a rate inversely proportional to colony size (so the little colonies would update almost every frame while the large ones would update less often). This kind of optimization is actually sort of fun, but it seems like I won't be able to avoid some more proper optimization of the actual grid update rules.

I think the overexposure theory explains it. When you work on something for a while you understand it more than you'd perhaps would want to, making it less appealing to continue working on, yet to people without this knowledge the game looks completely different. The most likes/yous/faves/wanks I've gotten was for stuff that's the most dull to me from any way you'd look at it.

I'm on this project for almost 2 years now. The first 2 significant refactors were draining emotionally as I wasn't making anything I see/post as visual progress. As soon as the mentality shifted from getting attention (which also decays with time as the people seeing it most often get used to your project) to making a good game, the time taken to bang my head against a problem for an entire weekend only to find out that one of the possible solutions won't work don't seem so bad.

On the other hand, most of the above assumes you actually want to make a game. You could be enjoying making models and environments much more than the rest of what gamedev involves, in which case, there's no point in forcing yourself to do it. Reevaluate your goals.

Have you read up on performance optimizations for Conway's Game of Life? Believe it or not, people have put serious effort into this, and made some good progress on it. There's tricks like caching update results for specific configurations of blocks, and I'm sure plenty of others.

Anon, we are closing in on the problem.

All of these things you listed: All of them (with the exception of skill trees) all of them exist, are implemented and tested. They run. It's in there. Even a weight system that determines your fall damage and jump distance.

BUT: Nobody gives a fuck about a leveling system or which character stats are in the game or which equipment.

If you have 2 seconds to woo someone (which is basically the time an average guy that scrolls over a blog entry or a tweet or whatever gives you) then you better fix your looks cause this guy isn't out for love, he's out to fuck.

And that's the issue anon. The game ain't fuckable anon.

So either aesthetics or well... fix the gameplay. The question however is also how can you fix the gameplay to impress someone with swinging a sword or casting a spell in 2 seconds. Well and I mean... I guess that leaves us at the beginning of the discussion I'm afraid.

Maybe I'm overthinking it but I have the bad feeling that this shit ain't gonna be easy to fix.

The style I use is not really a choice. It's basically the only way I can do things. I try to variate it but I always end up going back to the same old style anyway.
And yeah, I'm the first to recognize that my games aren't very deep or fun. I'ts a problem I know best myself. Unfortunately I often come up with ideas that sound fun in my mind but when I put them in practice they aren't. And at that point, it's too late to scrap everything.

i've always seen your game as a lot of potential that you were working towards diligently but being reluctant to show. i know what it feels like to not want to show the more incomplete aspects of the game. to be honest there is still a market for these kinds of games, but maybe not exactly what you're envisioning. the market is leaning heavily towards games like space hulk, dark mesiah of might and magic, vermintide, etc. you should really play up the RPG brawler aspect if you want more attention. i was super hyped for Hellraid before those cheeki breeki poolacks cancelled it to work on deadlight.

i agree you could play up the steam punk aspect a lot more, you clearly have the ability to do so. dark fantasy is in right now, but not for long, i can see the market shifting back to sci fi soon.
