It's really a spectrum. Usually the issue isn't so much a snowflake character as a player not being willing to be the guy who loses in any given situation. Every conflict has to have a winner and a loser be it an argument, a bar brawl, or a battle with the evil wizard. If a snowflake character is okay with losing those fights it can be a good opportunity for their character to grow beyond that initial snowflake concept. He didn't drive the story. He was driven through it by the more unqiue characters.
It works in a novel because more generic characters like that are easier to self-insert as, so the experience of reading through it feels more personal.
But in RP, great stories can easily come about even when everyone has something weird about them.
One of the options in the original post wasn't even that bad. An "Uncle Tom Lalafell" sounds realistic, yet still interesting.

There is no real or significant /xivg/ presence outside of Balmung or Gilgamesh. The rest are small handfuls of people who tried to become rebels and make their own group and failed horribly. Those two servers are the best for population and content anyway. Nobody here is gonna know anything about non-4chan FCs in general, but as always your best bet is the biggest realms.

Trying to sell The best items you can is such a pain. No one ever wants it. I made 220 gear for a friend today and accidentally made a few pieces nq or for the wrong class so i threw them on the mb thinking they'd never sell and they sold out in like 12 hours. Liar. I have all crafter classes and food sell the fastest because they're cheaper (as opposed to a 40k CRP HQ item that sits for 2 weeks). You just have to craft something that happens to be used in a leve/quest/daily turnin

Also it's not a money sink if you find a spammable recipe with cheap materials and have botanist leveled

You have to swap to Gathering class to Gather.

As far as leveling goes, it's a good idea to use PotD to some extent so you can get a 235 immediately upon hitting 60.

Read your skill tool tips and try to make sure your gear is within about 10 ilvls of your current level, quests should keep you up to date just fine but if something is really lacking for some reason just pick up some vendor gear that's closer to your level.

And yes you need to be on the gathering class to get whatever you want.

Just do your leveling quests and you'll be fine. Check what cross class abilities you'll need and level those classes/jobs as necessary. If you want a gathering job, head on over to the guild, talk to the guild leader, and you'll be able to switch to that job so you can gather.

1. vanilla quests are mindnumbingly boring, and you're forced to do 100 useless quests after you finish main story, just to progress to HW. This is probably the worst thing you have to worry about as you level.

2. Gathering is another job, just like being a mage or whatever. You have to swap to gathering gear to level it.

As for tips, it depends on if you wanna do it as quick as possible or if you want to avoid wanting to kill yourself, but eiither way, I think the best way to make leveling as painless as possible is finding someone to level with. If you do't care about how fast you reach 60, just keep spamming leveling roulette and abandoning unless it gives you ifrit/garuda/titan
