You can't really upgrade the Nexus, just unlock cryo pads, which will give you benefits like research points, credits, better trade prices etc.

You won't see these changes at the Nexus. To unlock them first you have to talk to Addoson's assistant once, then you can just unlock more cryo pads at the Tempest.

Anything would have been nice. But that takes effort and the team was clearly uninterested in such. Despite all the datapads you can read and various npcs harping about settlement efforts and hardships, there is very little change that happens and that's depressing as fuck.

The game is all over the place because there is so much telling and so little showing going on.

On top of that, there's all sorts of shit that just makes no sense. Then you hear Nexus News talking about how they're waiting to announce the identity of a dead person until his next of kin in the Milky Way is notified and you just have to stop and ask, 'Wait, what the fuck?'
