Can someone tell me where exactly is this "Gilgamesh is a Grand Candidate" thing come from? I just remembered it when it was mentioned in the last thread, because I've read the whole of Babylon, Solomon, every interlude involving any of the three Gils and there is never a single comment about being, aspiring for or qualifying for Grand Whatever. Archer, Caster, nothing, not a word. Was it mentioned in Nasu's blog or something? I read that too, but the tiny font is annoying so I sometimes end up skimming without meaning to.

The only reasoning I can find by searching is people in random forums arguing that it's because he has Clairvoyance, which seems like an idiotic stretch. Merlin only says that to call oneself the strongest mage, one would need those eyes, not that the eyes are the only qualification. Caster Gil is pretty candid about the fact that he can't use magic worth shit and is just fucking around with his wands.

Merlin says you need EX rank Clairvoyance to qualify for Grand Caster, which is why only he, Solomon, and Gilgamesh qualify for it as far as we know. Like the Caster class, Grand Caster doesn't require any knowledge of actual magecraft. Merlin admits he dislikes magecraft and voices a general distaste for anything that isn't illusion magic, and while he's clearly very gifted at it, he hasn't accomplished anything even close to what Solomon has as a magus. There are several magi throughout history who are likely more talented than Merlin, like Zelretch and the First Magic user. However, those don't qualify for Grand Caster for the reason stated above. So basically, skill with Magecraft has nothing to do with being a Caster, and the same goes for Grand Caster. With that in mind, Gilgamesh has the one qualification we know of for being Grand Caster, so there's no reason to think he isn't a candidate to be it, even if he's naturally behind Solomon and Merlin.

It's based on the assumption that Grand Caster is, in fact, the 'strongest mage' Merlin is referring to there. And if that's the case, the question becomes 'what counts as a mage?' Because writers with zero knowledge of magecraft have qualified for the Caster class, as has Gil who laughs about how shitty magecraft is in general. If 'the strongest mage' MUST have Clairvoyance on par with Solomon and Merlin, then Gilgamesh, who is a Caster, is immediately catapulted up to the same realm as Solomon and Merlin even if he knows zero magecraft.
