Checking the poe builds website, there are a handful of very high level using poison ST pathfinder. I'd go Cleave but that is mostly red sockets on an eva chest (QotF) So poison ST seems good for now.

the biggest balance joke to me, viewed as a microcosm, is that es rangers can path through the projectile damage nodes and still end up with higher ehp than life rangers that path out the bottom and lose out on proj damage

I'm not one for damage entitlement because it's already snowballed but melee splash should've been fucking uberstronk buffed patches ago considering no one wants to deal with namelocking anyway. The opportunity cost isn't in damage anymore, it's in functionality, usability and QoL, none of which melee splash actually offers.

No, that's a valid endeavour.
But you probably should post your ideas on GGG's suggestioon forum, not here where no one of relevance sees them.
Also, enchants and supports probably isn't the best way to go about buffing viper strike.

How about changing Viper Strike so that if it scores a killing blow it will spread all poison stacks on the killed enemy to nearby enemies (keeping original remaining poison duration intact).
This way, you wouldn't need to use splash or buy a certain enchant or by another unique jewel or anything. You'd just need to build for poison damage and kill stuff with viper strike.
