Gameplay isn't even that bad, honestly. It's one of the few games that actually gets magic right in that you can become an actual demigod if you figure out the system.

Morrowind's gameplay is great because it's broken as fuck. I can only really think of two other games which had magic systems as satisfying.

Japanese is honestly a fucking silly language. It has way too many characters required to transmit basic information, and while this does lead to variety in expression, it's not very practical. You can tell that it and all similar languages were never meant to leave the confines of Asia and be used globally, and it's coming back to fuck everything up in the present day. The Japanese language is different from English in a lot of ways but that's not a bad thing. It takes a lot of effort to learn but once you do (and it only takes a couple years, maybe 3-4ish), kanji and everything is fine and totally natural. It's okay. Everything about it is okay. I'm glad it's different. It makes it annoying to translate, but that just means it has a lot of unique stuff I wouldn't find in English. Every hard phrasing in JP to translate is a phrase I'll find in JP media but not in English. It's fine. It's not a big deal.
I also think you're being too ethnocentric. Japanese from an English perspective is worse than Japanese from a Japanese perspective. Japanese could be the global language and that would be fine. you don't need to memorize every single kanji, you just need to see how the kanji is used in words. there are only a certain amount of common words that are used daily, and once you memorize those words you can start forming connections between the kanji that's in them and other words. after a while, it becomes no different than learning words in another language desu

I didn't say that. My only point is that you need quite a lot more characters to get started than with say, English, French, or Spanish.

So far I've only gone through about 200 kanji and it definitely gets easier to connect dots and make sense of things, as you say. But it's nowhere near comparable to other languages I've tried.

gameplay is okay, nothing new in terms of dungeon crawling, but I really enjoyed the characters and their interactions, especially the main character. I'd definitely recommend it with a cheated save if you don't want to deal with the gameplay, and a walkthrough so you can get all the scenes.
