Playing through Awakening again makes me remember why I haven't bothered with Fates yet.

The second half of that game is so flaccid and disconnected. The whole child-timetravel-whatever stuff is so sloppy and slapdash and results in a second half that just feels like fucking about with no stakes or character.

Literally all my gauntlet battles have been my Celica, the one Linde on my friend list, and some random mage.
The game is telling me to put the pega ponies away and switch to mage meme teams, I see.

They kept it like the original except they fleshed out the story and made it pretty good, and more importantly cohesive, overall. The gameplay of Echoes is way more similar to pre-Awakening FE than Awakening and Fates were. Pair-ups essentially turned the game into something completely different.

I started playing Awakening around a year ago with the intention of beating Apotheosis and to a certain degree i enjoyed grinding until i got bored of it. 1 month ago i came back and started to enjoy it again, it takes me 4-5 minutes to beat "R&R 3" while giving experience to 2 characters. At this point i coul probably take on Apotheosis but there are a couple of children i wanto to min-max before.

If you can't enjoy grinding or min-maxing then there's nothing wrong with it

I think a big distinction though is incorrect wording. Like them or not, the new characters generally ARE more fleshed out in a literal sense. You might not LIKE them, but you can certainly explain their character much more than older pre GBA ones.
Camilla, for example. I don't like her, not in the slightest. But she's not bland. Really, no one in Fates is, except maybe like, the villains, and Yukimura. Even if they don't get much screen time together, she's relatively protective of Maria and doesn't want her to go out onto the battlefield, whereas Maria wants to help people because she feels as if she's grown up enough to start assisting her sister by healing her and Marth's allies. Minerva has a clear weakness for her given how she caves in to her pleas without too much effort. You can tell that she genuinely cares about her family, and that's all from a small conversation.

That and there are some of the exchanges she shares with the MU in FE12 as well, where we find out she shares a special pendant among her siblings. Then there's the whole aspect of her that envies Marth in the sense that she desires to have his leadership skills

You can still be bland regardless of how much exposition you throw at the player, and we can see with both the new added scenes in SD and the whole Echoes remake that with a proper team they can do plenty fo flesh out these characters. Besides all that 12 did a great job with your army getting some personality highlighted through supports.

NES was rather limited, but FE4 and FE5 did plenty to expand their characters for their time. FE4 especially with hidden events and interesting side-dialogues.

I like her QR build with Draconic Aura. It can actually reverse KO some reds that are dumb enough to attack.
Her desperation+moonbow set is quite nice as well.
You could also run Fury+Bonfire since Minerva is surprisingly bulky.

I just gave you a reason why some people might just prefer an older character.

Some people call Camilla boring and not interesting and that one of her main trait is "I love you Corrin".

Also most people tend to prefer "bland" characters over annoying ones or characters that they found offensive.

Peri and Xander are not bland for example but they are quite hated for various reasons.

Characters like Setsuna are blander than some others but we never hear people hating on her since she never does something that offends people.

I know I'm in the minority, I just like how the battles aren't holding chokes and more about taking risks/setting up defensive areas with my own units. That being said Gaiden was too slow, and lacked a lot of things that would make the player's life easier.

Echoes' Dungeon Crawling in late Chapter 3 as well as 4 and 5 is incredibly fun and sometimes you want to avoid battle(there is faint stealth mechanics) as well as the fleshed out story and characters make this remake fucking outstanding in my opinion.
