Its government corruption and the general populace has zero idea whats going on or that Vastayans even exist. Notice that Xayah and Rakan tend to only kill soldiers and want to return Ionia back to the "old ways" (This included when humans and Vastayans were fuck buddies who got along). Keep in mind that they constantly mention things like " WE DONT WANT YOUR DUMB PEACE!" meaning that Ionians have probably tried multiple attempts to parlay with them or come to a mutual agreement with the Vastaya. Which the Vasaya all resist thus "forcing" Ionias hand and causing them to send party poopers like Zed to try to get rid of them.

Vastaya were hinted MONTHS ago in several lore stories. In a Zaun lore text about random orphan kids, they talk to singer named Elodie, who claims to be a princess and runs an orphanage - says the following:

>My mother taught me when I was a girl. She was of an old Ionian line, though her voice was far superior to mine.
>All the Vastaya songs are beautiful, but they are also sad.
>True beauty is only beautiful because it is finite. That is why some of their songs are too sad to sing now.

so If I had to guess, she was Vastayan noble in-hiding and her family was probably massacred when she was young in Ionia. She fled to Zaun (confirmed for being an open & multicultural city, fyi) and took on a full human form via shape-shifting powers to hide her real identity. She probably founded an orphanage because she can relate to Zaun's outcast orphans, being an orphan from a persecuted race and all.

It's likely that Jhin went to Zaun to assassinate her, along with that Ionian Chem-Baron turned-national-traitor that's funding bio-weapon projects for Noxus.

Why humans are massacring them - we don't know yet. But we do get some clues from Rakan and Xayah's lines implying their existence is "unnatural for Ionia's balance" or something like that. ...so total BS, as other quotes and bits from the lore suggests that they're generally spiritual, pacifist and close to nature. They're the ones that died trying to protect that sacred magical life-tree in Ivern's lore for example.

So tl;dr - my suspicions about Ionia's people being controlled and culturally "brainwashed" by an EXTREMELY corrupt wealthy/political elite class is likely now. It parallels the backward-ass ways of IRL east-asian societies - where if you aren't a good little hard worker-drone for society, you get dishonored and shit.

This could add a huge layer of depth to champions like Zed, Shen, Yasuo, Karma, Jhin, Syndra, Soraka, Akali and Varus.

I'm not just talking about Ionia's corruption pertaining to the vastaya specifically, I'm talking about Ionia's large-scale corruption in general.

Yasuo was framed for murdering his elder/mentor. Yes, there's been speculation that Riven did it - but with the new lore-related clues from Rakan, Zay and Jhin - it's now far more likely that the murder was an inside job orchestrated by fellow Ionians. The guy wasn't even given a fair trial to prove his innocence. He was just outright dishonored and completely ostracized.

Then they eventually sent his own brother to kill him. It's unlikely that his brother had a say in it either; was probably forced to do it to retain/regain the honor for the rest of Yasuo's family in fear that they would be outcast as well. So Yasuo was forced to kill his own fucking brother (and unknowingly, probably further shamed the rest of his family in the process.) That's extremely fucked up when you think about it.

You also have to take Yasuo's quotes into consideration. He outright mocks the concept of honor and all of that, implying that it's total bullshit. He's woke; he now knows there's something innately and biased in regards to Ionia's honor-based cultural practices.

As for Yi - he'll probably receive some heavy retcons for his new lore. Thanks to some writers on the official forums though - we DO know that he runs (or once ran) a very popular and prestigious wuju dojo... which drove Jhin's father and his struggling chi-techniques dojo out of business. So there's that.
