Every now and then I see a weird parasite pop up over my head or some shit like that.

That is Abathur. His main body is weak and super squishy, so he's trying to find a place far enough away where he's safe, but also close enough to soak EXP from the lane. It's tricky.

The parasite is Abathur's teamfight presence. Stick the Symbiote on someone's head and he can throw abilities through it and shield people.

He can also soak EXP through the symbiote as if he was actually there, so a well-played Abathur can soak exp from 2 lanes at once, though obviously a well-played Vikings are better at this sort of thing.

Abathur passively pushes/freezes lanes by spawning minions every 15 seconds wherever he sits. It gives away his location, though, so you can't be too uppity.
After that, you play guardian angel to the rest of your team. Ideally, you pick a squishy melee sort, and shield them/do AOE damage, also poking/pushing with your second Q.
You have two ults, one that clones an ally for 20 seconds, and one that gives you a new Monstrosity body to puppet.
Finally, you can tunnel to anywhere on the map. It's nice, but by nature, Abathur can't really abuse it like Zagara does.
Endgame clone gives a massive shield, endgame monstrosity can deep tunnel like Abathur, but it absolutely can abuse it like all hell.
Abathur's 'alternate path' is buffing Locusts instead of Symbiotes. They can surprise the enemy with stupid strong pushes, but it honestly probably isn't worth it unless you're playing next-level mastermind strats in a very low MMR.

Understandably to be fair, ranged locusts outranging the core was fucking bullshit. Take the global mine talent, get locust next/locust swarm spawn, tunnel to enemy base, drop a bunch of locusts behind the core, recall away.

Enemy team is forced to send someone back to deal with it or their core takes a good chunk of damage, and there's nothing they can do about it unless they had someone never leave base to play minesweeper against Abathur, which was also fine because it puts the enemy team a man down.
