Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Hey guys. Life got hectic and I won't be able to take my turns regularly for at least a month. I'd like to get a sub.
Mictlan's position is good, currently at "war" with Yomi (the player went AI as soon as the war broke out). Can certainly compete for victory, which is why I would prefer not to set it AI.
I'll do my current turn in a few hours. Good luck to whoever's going to sub in, thanks and sorry to all other players.

Also: I'm Ashdod in MAdman and I asked the admin to be removed from the game last week. I'd appreciate if he could do that, otherwise Ashdod will be chainstaling starting turn 1.

My PC just died (screen keeps glotching and then everything becomes unresponsive). He served me for a good 6+ years, but it looks like it had enough. I'm going to need a 24 hour extension while I sort this out.

How does damage for something like this spell work?

It says 10+ armor negating damage magic damage. It doesn't mention that MR resists it, so I'm assuming its just a straight 10+ damage something takes?

IE: this spammed would near guarantee a single giant thug would go down?
>>
>>173271772
Yes. frozen heart is the #1 best way to counter thugs in my experience.

Thanks. A game I'm playing with friends has devolved into me getting raided by kitted eagle kings every turn. I have a bunch of water 1 mages, but they cast mistform.

Will mistform reduce the damage for this down to 1?

I'm still a little perplexed as to how that is from the spells description. Mistform says it takes an exceptionally hard blow (25+ damage), a 1/100 chance, or damage from a magical weapon to be dispelled.

I'm assuming the frozen heart spell counts as the magical weapon, since it wont do more than 25 damage, and then from there it should be able to do full damage? IE: Mistform reduces the first hits damage to 1

For something like this, it states magic resistance negates. Does that mean that a unit with 20MR will still get hit by ~95 fatigue damage?
>>
>>173277946
It means a unit with 20MR has a really good chance of completely ignoring the effect
>>
>>173231495
they are not-commander units.
use gift of reason on the non brain damaged one to turn them into mages.
>>
>>173277946
It means when you cast it on that unit, you roll 10+2d6+pen bonuses+1 per two levels above the path requirement.

Then they roll 20+2d6

A roll of 6 on either of the dice is 5 plus another d6, infinitely exploding.

If the attack equals or exceeds the defence, they get the full affect, otherwise they ignore it entirely.

All rolls except Magic Duel work this way, to my knowledge.
>>
>>173278834
>equals or exceeds
Isn't there one roll where the defender wins ties? Might MR actually.
>>
>>173278508
>>173278834

Alright, was a bit confused by the manual. Only spells that have MR negates are effected by this roll, correct? IE: There are a host of spells that completely go through it

Causing unrest by pillaging / raiding can make Chaospower units stronger there.

Otherwise it's just a tool to fuck with that province mostly, when you don't have fort connection and won't get to keep it soon, so the player who takes it from you gets less out of it

Carrion Lady is completely pointless, you get better power to cost ratio out of Carrion Centaur reanimation and leadership and actual spells out of Carrion Lord.
The only point to summon a Carrion Lady is if you really need that Holy 2 regeneration spell next turn and don't have enough gold for a dryad or gems for a Lord.
>>
>>173260564
Curse of Stones won't shut down an army in a reasonable period of time, and you shouldn't expect it to.

What it will do is give the enemy a significant penalty to attack, defense, and protection by the time they reach melee. It also slows down enemy units, giving you more time before they hit your frontline.

It's easy to spam and good for its research level, but you probably won't win the fight with just it.

DSDS2 has ended with Asphodel winning! Congratulations!

I got fucked in this game, again. I tried a N9S5 pretender for eventual thugging, but oh my god my gem income was not conducive. Again. And the fact that I had 3 forts, one of which I couldn't build lab in, because I had to fight off a four way war at one point. I came back from it, but it was too late, everyone else had snowballed way too hard off the phenomenal amount of AIs. I had no mages, no income, no gems, and it was only the good quality of Caelum's troops that allowed me to survive to the end.
>>
>>173318769
How do you script caelum's troops ?
>>
>>173319750
Storm General with 3 squads, one with a bunch of afflicted spire horns set to guard commander in line formation so that they walk rather than fly back, then 2 squads set to hold and attack closest and rear. As for mage support, rush evo 5, then conj 5, then alt 7. Recruit high seraphs when you need storm casters, otherwise recruit caelian seraphs to cast stormpower Thunderstrike. When you get Air Elementals, recruit High Seraphs to spam Air Elementals and cast Thunderstrike without Storm. When you hit Alt 7, cast Fog Warriors with A4 high seraphs+the above mage support and you'll probably be fine if they don't bring lightning resist, elemental spam of their own, or magic weapons. All this assumes you have gems which I did not, so yeah, take it with a grain of salt
>>
>>173317518
Water bottles are almost always a decent use of water gems.

At worst they're a free Summon Water Elemental every fight the holder gets into, and for assassinations they're invaluable.

If you have water mages, the +W ring is the most affordable booster in the game and worth using a lot.

Naiad and Kokythiad are very nice mage summons for their price, if you have the crosspaths. Green Lions are amazing for the few nations which can make use of them.

Saving up for a big Vengeful Waters cast can be devastating, and is a nice ace to keep up your sleeve if you need help defending your lands during a war.

Quickening is a extremely nice combat buff that can see you burning through a ton of water gems (or you can forge a few lenses, which also takes a lot of gems). Wave Warriors is similar but not quite as good.

Water elementals (especially living water) are amazing underwater. They're so good you can often trade water gems for fights underwater.

Hidden in Snow is a good way to burn as many water gems as you feel like spending, and it gets you a decent assortment of elite troops and mages.

I've almost never had issues finding places to spend my water gems, but fire are a lot trickier to make good use of.

>>173318769
>good quality of Caelum's troops that allowed me to survive to the end
How are Caelum's troops in any way good?

They're humans (which are already pretty terrible), but one size larger with no stat buffs.

Storm immune flyers with lances senpai. The mash indies and kill other units in their weight class pretty reliably. With fog warriors, they are pretty resilient
>>
>>173320291
>mash indies
Not really an achievement...

>kill other units in their weight class
I don't understand what you mean by weight class.

If you mean price, that's completely wrong.

>With fog warriors, they are pretty resilient
Everything is resilient with fog warriors if your enemy doesn't have a way to easily break it.
>>
quick mod idea :
Thinking of making national heroes appear when you fulfill certain conditions, depending on the hero (ex: capture a throne, build 2 forts, have your prophet die, etc) rather than randomly.
Thinking of either making new heroes work that way and leaving the old ones, or converting existing heroes and buffing luck scale to compensate.

Would that interest you ?
Is this even doable ?
I never modded Dom4 before, but I had this idea after realizing that some interesting strategies were opened up thanks to some heroe/pretender combination that were in no way guaranteed even if you went T3L3.
>>
>>173320439
Mashing indies means more expansions means more mages means more gems means more everything. There's a reason why province count is the #1 way to determine a leader in Dominions.

By weight class I mean, what other 10 gold 7 resource unit is as good as a spire horn warrior? The low resource cost means that they are massable. Yeah, 10 spire horns are going to die against Agarthan infantry, but against Agarthan light infantry they win.

And once again, the more massable they are, the more value you get out of fog warriors. The fact that Spire Horns also have magic weapons means that they break FW themselves, which is another bonus
>>
>>173320679
oh, also, they are shock resistant meaning they aren't worried about the AoE of Tstrike. And they are map move 3 flyers which makes them excellent raiders that kill PD losslessly.
>>
>>173320679
Being good at expansion for non-sacred units is more a factor of how cheap your troop is than how powerful it is.

I've had a good expansion with units which were basically lion tribe indies, simply because they were dirt cheap in resources and I could use hordes of them.

Resources start to matter a lot less once you have forts going up, and there are a lot of troops which can beat equal gold of spire horn.

>>173320869
Seems like we might be saying different things.

When you say good quality troops, I hear "will beat things in a fight".

It sounds like you're saying they're useful troops, which I agree with. The tactical mobility is amazing and they're handy for expansion.
>>
>>173321146
>tactical
Meant strategic here.

Tactical mobility is correct just as well. Flying is awesome a lot of the time, pouncing on and surrounding an enemy that hasn't been fully buffed yet, if you're on the defense side not even blessed. And forces enemy to position their mages inside troops lest they get sniped by the lancers.

Granted, other times flying is a liability, but at least you can do the line formation to make them walk then.

Caelums are really underrated, they're not easy to play but once you get it they can be great. With Summod MA Caelum is possibly the best nation of the era, since they get a new mage who's both a good caster getting you new crosspaths and makes 21! resources a turn. So that you can spam Storm Guards instead of Spire Horns.

I agree that the mage is dope and that prod 3 awake MA Caelum is amazing, but you are on a clock. You have a strong midgame, but need to close the game out before Pan or Jotun goes full demon or one of the death nation gets to spam out tarts. You're also not particularly strong against skeleton hordes (which are hugely common in MA), since you lack EQ and fire elementals unless you break into those paths with inefficient, late-conj summons.

Their mages are amazing, as is flying everything, but lackluster troops and no blood isn't good for lategame.

What? Is this game so poorly balanced that using blood magic is necessary to be optimal?
>>
>>173373449
Death very technically has the best lategame, but blood has the best army-esque summons by a wide margin
>>
>>173373449
Blood magic has a poor start, but scales very well because you can scale up your blood slave production.

It's not unbeatable in lategame, but it has a definite edge over other types of magic. unless you're playing in a memegame where people genocide all the population everywhere long before the game ends

You don't need blood to be a good nation, but there are nations which perform well in early-midgame like Caelum, then also have blood/strong troops/SCs for lategame. It's hard to argue Caelum is the best nation in the era when those exist.

>>173373962
Death is a good lategame path too, but you just need a couple D7 casters for tarts so you can get there via summons. Blood needs a ton of mages to hunt slaves for you, so it's only really accessible to nations who have recruitable blood or good blood magic summons.

Stealthy units move before patrolling occurs. The section where it checks to find stealthy units is #29 - sneak discovery.

Not really. If you have time and resources you can jump to blood by empowering D4 mage to B1. Gather 77 slaves (It should take about 12 turns I guess) and summon wampire.
Then you can steamroll.
You can always look for the random indie blood mages.

>>
>>173409372
edit: just opened the new turn. i'll have to write a salt message again. it's even worse than before.
>>
>>173407405
You can do that, but it costs you 77 slaves per blood hunter. Nations with national blood mages get blood hunters for 5 slaves and a (usually) meaningless amount of gold.

You also start building your blood economy much later than a standard blood nation. By the time non-blood nations can afford to pick up blood 7 rather than something more immediately usable, it's usually late in the game.

You won't be able to compete with a proper blood nation in volume of summons within a reasonable time. The things which make blood-focused nations terrifying endgame powers require a massive blood slave income (and often national-specific summons).

I've broken into blood in two games so far, both because I was left alone for a silly amount of time. Even with that much leeway, I didn't get anything even approaching a proper blood economy before the game ended. I don't see how it's possible either, the numbers just don't add up.

>Gather 77 slaves (It should take about 12 turns I guess) and summon wampire.
Your numbers are off - you need a D4B3 mage (so 50 + 30 + 45 slaves for three empowers) plus a vampire lord summon (77 slaves) for a total of 202 blood slaves before your first vampire (assuming you had a D3 mage already, which requires good death mages or a substantial investment into conjuration). That number is doable with scout blood hunting but it is very, very inefficient.

>You can always look for the random indie blood mages.
Getting those is basically luck, and they're very rare. They only seem to show up in a tiny fraction of games (below 10% in my experience, but I tend to play smaller games), and your odds of being the one who gets the province are even worse.

MA Pythium Pretender.jpg
84KB, 884x549px
Hey guys. I'm a beginner (I've only played one multiplayer game for now) and I'm going to enter a new multiplayer game as MA Pythium.

I'm doing diverse tests while waiting for the game start. I tried pic related as my pretender. I didn't select my magic paths randomly: I used dom4 mod inspector to see what items would be useful and what path I'd need to craft them; also, since this pretender chassis uses only 10 creation points per new path, it was a nice opportunity to get lots of gems through site searching.

So my plan is to expand first with a regular human army AND a hydra army separately, then start researching with theurg as well as creating one arch theurg to start site searching, then building two or three forts while my pretender awakes and starts site searching too, then creating only arch theurgs in cap while mass creating theurgs and theurg communicants in other forts.

I'd focus on construction and convocation magic schools so that my pretender could create boosters and SC items as well as summoning angel SCs. As for these SC items (remember I'm a beginner, I really don't know if I'm doing it right), as a start (can be improved with higher research/magic paths/gem economy) I'm thinking about boots of the messenger, robe of shadows, shield of gleaming gold, frost/fire brand, horror helmet.

Then, Wrath of God (hence the air magic path on my pretender), Stellar focus, and if possible Arcane nexus. Meanwhile, trying to find a good use for astral communion.

Does it all sound good? If you have any advice, that's why I've come, so I'd be happy to get some.

Anyway, I also have a specific question. While testing this strategy against AI, I found out that a misfortune 2 can apparently be a lot more annoying than I thought, even with order 3 and the theurg's and arch theurg's ability to somewhat counter bad events; so, I'm wondering, wouldn't it be better to just get misfortune 1 and heat 2? Are there any hidden really annoying heat effects?

You want to go full scales with Pythium. A rainbow is fine on them, but an awake does even better. Spam out...leves? Velites? The cheap guys. Don't bother going for SCs, they won't be good enough even with that level of equipment. Instead, grab Thaum 1 for communions, then go for Evo until you get Stellar Cascades. Your early wars will be won by spamming out Theurg acolytes that do nothing but cast cascades. To further this aim, once you get Cascades, go for Light of the North Star in conjuration, then have an arch theurg cast it and have your acolytes cast it without needing to communion or PotS. Later on, you'll want Conj 5 for air and water elementals, alt for fog warriors and the big astral buffs, ench for mass flight, evo for t strike spam and storm, not necessarily in that order

>>173423804
everybody casts communion slave or communion master
one master casts light of the northern star, the rest cast stellar cascades
everybody casts stellar cascades till the end

if you have an e mage in there get them to cast summon earth power to give the slaves reinvig so they last better. as an s nation with a lot of communion potential as long as you can get 1 of a path on somebody, even a fucking indy deer tribe shaman, you can cast any battle magic in the game so long as you have a communion and the means to forge the matrix you need

Divine Emperor, Dom 6, E3 S6 D4
O3P3C1G3Misf2

E3 gives you full access to earth, S6 gives you access to wish later on, and also makes your pretender a magic dueller extraordinaire, D4 gives you tarts with artifacts

Misf 2 is totally handleable, but you can go for O2Misf1 if you feel really strongly about it, or drop a point of production. This is the rainbow build, and is the one I would not recommend, but since you started with it I imagine it is the one you would be the most interested in.

Great White Bull, Dom 6, E5N2, same scales as above. This will turbo charge your already decent expansion and make it good. 17 prot isn't the greatest, but it will do, just don't send it into 60 barbarians and expect it to win. N2 lets you make thistle maces, but you probably aren't going to be breaking into nature in any big way. Aside from that, this is the build that will facilitate your nation's strong points, rather than by trying to backload your power. Later on, your bull can cast army of lead/gold, so that is always nice. If you're really attached to it, you can delay your evo research to pick up conj 3 for earthpower so that it survives longer, but eh, not really that important
>>
>>173426005
Why nature 2 exactly? Just for thistle mace or is there something else? Thistle mace doesn't look very useful in this configuration since the bull doesn't have hands

Nah, its fine. I've accepted sum1won will win once the game goes long since people will literally never attack him, so I'll just need to make the game end before then obviously.

Since I'd rather him not with 2 Archaea's in a row, even if everyone else is fine with that.
>>
>>173428607
>so I'll just need to make the game end before then obviously.
If you were able of ending the game, then he was right to attack you. Like, this makes no sense:

"Atlantis is about to win because he attacked me. Since nobody will help, you have forced me to claim victory instead."
>>
>>173429784
Vanheim has 2 thrones and little ability to grab any more anytime soon. He has no ability to win.

Only people even close to maybe winning sometime soon are bats, Ur, and Atlantis.
>>
>>173430057
Atlantis has one throne. Bats has 2 thrones, one of which is under siege.

Ur has one throne claimed, and two more in their territory.
>>
Do preaching commanders with armies defend with the rest of their army that was set to patrol? I'm near positive they do, just checking. Nothing in the manual notes anything with regards to this under the "preaching" section
>>
>>173430289
preachers don't patrol, so no
>>
>>173430234
And when you combine that with the thrones they could reasonably take in the future, puts all of them way closer to winning than Vanheim, who has 2 thrones and 0 ability to get anymore at all.

'close' is relative here of course. But those three nations are the only three I can see pulling a win (Ur from throne rush, Atlantis from being the runaway nation, bats can never be discounted because bat blood lategame).

So let me get this straight.

There are 5 preachers preaching with no soldiers under them. 5 Commanders with 20 soldiers each patrollling. They are all in Prov (1). An army attacks into Prov(1) from Prov(2).

The preachers will not be at the fight with the patrolling armies and PD?

Same question about searching mages
>>
>>173432275
If it's a fort they won't. If it's not forted, they will.
>>
>>173432275
No they will if there is no fort. Preachers stay in the fort, patrollers are out of it. In a prov with no fort, everyone is considered in the province and battle ready. It is why you set site searchers to retreat immediately and waaaaay back
>>
>>173432275
You just described a very testable situation

So domg, what bless is best for Ragha? N9E4? W9E4? A fire bless? A blood bless?

A/S/D seem pretty trashy, so those can be thrown out, and E doesn't play nicely (the major, not the minor).

Just curious what other people's thoughts are. Is it worth it to run monobless awake expander, and if so what pretender?
>>
>>173439980
because it's one of only two decent prets with UW acess, and the only one that can solo UW provinces.
go dormant erfsnek, you have enough W1 mages to craft rings for a fivefold monk to go with him UWbuild lab + temple UW

N9 makes Zhayedans a real headache to deal with. W9 makes them blend like nothing else in LA. N9F9 is possible, but it tanks your scales and doesn't really bring much to the table. You could, hypothetically, go unblessed and still do fine. Zhayedans are just that good.
>>
>>173440160
I have been asking myself long enough
the way I see, if you are talking gryphon blessing, you obviously take h3. They have 15 hp in first form, which is very little, so N9 is laughable (unless you plan to use the summons as thugs). W9 is solid as well as F9, F9 being the cheapest and pays well enough and the god can use all the surplus F gems ragha has.
E minor: (still talking heat3). Dastur is awesome, but they dont need e minor beucase they can just cast reinvigoration. They do like minor A and the path can give you booster if needed.
S9 may help your lategame.
The pretender choice, althought vast, doesnt help much.

Gryphons, in my opinion, dont need much more help from the bless. I do dislike their low att score, but they do hit 3 times per round.
f6 solar disc gives you excellent scales and helps thugging and gryphons.
N9(e4) I found too costly (so does W9)
>>
>>173440914
Isn't N8 good enough for making shit beefier while being cheaper than N9?

>>
>>173440914

Well I'm here to tell that our game is over. Because I fucked up something there won't be graphs but I will do a quick summary.
In the beginning there were 6 EA nations
Abyssia
Xibalba
Helheim
Marverni
TNN (me)
Ermor

Firstly Abyssia went AI before 5th turn because he fucked up his expansion.
Then after some time, after the expansion phase was over I, Ermor, Marverni and maybe Helheim went to war against Xibalba. I managed to blitz through 10 provinces and even get to the their capital itself, but since I fucked up some scripting and went with small but elite warriors I was not able to continue with siege so I retreated. About 5 turns after my retreat Xibalba went AI.
>>
>>173449336
How in the name of christ did Abyssia fuck up expansion so bad they had to go AI? Thats like the one stage of the game where they are actually strong.
>>
>>173449886
all you have to do is run into cavalry or thinking that since your starting army and burning ones are so good they can take 70 barbarians no problem.

there is always room to fuck up

>>173449336
After that I got most of the UW territories that Xibalba held and 2-3 land ones. Other ones went to Ermor, Marverni and maybe Helheim. But peace did not last long.

After some turns I declared a war upon Marverni since they were closer to my army (at this point I have rebuild my army) and I made Helheim declare a war upon Ermor so I dont get fucked in ass. After about 15 turns and 2-3 big battles Marverni went AI. Helheim went even sooner.

Because of this I and Ermor have made a temporary NAP until we capture whats left of the nations (they still put up a good resistance). And with this came a time when I and Ermor went to war.

Well war did not last long. Since this was +75 turn I lost most of my will to play it. Also I made pic related so if I wanted I think I could have dragged this for pretty long time. This was my first game and I think I learnt a lot of things. It was also pretty fun.

You dont even need burning ones, your regular starting army will face roll basically everything that isnt 80 barbarians or those three orb lightning casting fucks. Even if you loose your starting army it would take like 3 turns max to make another expansion party.
>>
>>173454229
That;s what I thought too. Lost my first army blind expanding. Went "Oh well, that was bad luck, let's make another." In the meantime my assassin was taking a province, slowly. When my second party went out, it killed the first prov no worries, but then couldn't take the second, and the same happened to the third party I sent out. Eventually my assassin took the third, but by that time I could see Helheim so, knowing I was a perfect rush target, I went AI because hopefully the AI would do better than me

Literally all I've done is some raiding with parties of 10-20 low-tier units (ie, deep ones, icthyids, some free shades) or living waters casters (except for an earthking who sieged a fort for one turn). It's the least organized attack I've ever done.

The bulk of vanheim's losses have actually been from his partially unsuccessful counter attacks. I'm also skeptical of the "twice as big" claim, since he's eaten more nations than I have, even if those nations are smaller, and the fact that he has similar research to me (I have conj 8 and alt 8; he has Const 8, Conj 7 and B7).

>>173439870
I've played two other games with Lambert. He attacked me in both. One was an attempted throne grabagainst myself and another player (Bad Life Choices), and he attacked me turn 8 in the other with the power of sailing (some 300% resources memegame).

>>173437062
This is really the issue with the diplo situation. I have done very little until recently. Its that your diplo efforts rubbed people the wrong way as the game goes on, since you scapegoat whoever you are rivals with at that time. Like, against Arco, you scolded him for eating Marveni "because marveni promised to fight bats" - and then you vultured marveni.

>holy pyre
>not fighting undead or demons
For what purpose? Just use falling fires or fireball, both are better.
>>
>>173482936
Fireballs seems less consistent but I'll take your word for it
>>
>>173483857
The thing with fireballs is that the heat shock fatigue damage is a huge deal, so a barrage of them will actually incapacitate a fairly large area and reduce the effective attack/defense/prot of the units whose fatigue gets nuked
>>
>>173483857
Fireballs do much more damage to the targets they do hit and have AoE fatigue/burning. They're not ideal against low-protection chaff, but that's why I suggested falling fires.

Holy Pyre does only 7 armor-piercing damage, so even mediocre protection cuts its damage by a ton. A lot of those targets are wearing plate, which fireball (or even just falling fires) would be much more effective against.

>>173483942
Don't forget that heat shock can cause burning. Unless your enemy is regenerating or fire resistant, getting set on fire can do a nice chunk of their hitpoints before it burns out.

Just checked the turn, the air elementals fatigued the mages, and did away with a good chunk of their sacreds but didn't get everyone. The W9/N9 helhirdings and off script lightning bolt spam from the Vanjarls finished everything off however.

It was overall still a bad turn for me, I lost all my D2 mages because they broke siege and spammed lammashtas. I was hoping his mages would be scirpted skelle spam and they would rout his sacreds but unfortunately some of them just casted dust to dust immediatly, and my mages died horribly.

Also had the loki hero solo attacking my cap to summon a few elementals to kill the pd, but he took an arrow to the face. So overall I'm still pretty fucking finished. Just glad I got revenge on the Sauro army that took me out.

Need to work on my research priority for Helheim. Stopping at Conj 4 and attempting to get Ench 5 was in retrospect a bad idea, if I had the elementals at my cap battle or some evo for my Vanjarls this could have gone very differently.

Since I'm in favor of winning a game (for the first time in forever) I think that I should write something.

Pic related was my pretender. Pretty solid statue.

S9 helps expand with equites and extra magic resistance on flamens is nice touch too.

E + S give you mindhunting (EA Ermor is great mindhunt nation - recruitable everyhere str 0,25% 2S mages, items for magic penetration and priest healers from cap) and golems.

Scales are nice and magic 3 is must-have - Ermor is nation of great, cheap augurs and average infantry (they don't stand a chance against any elven nation or even Ulm) and almost all my spells rely on magic-resistance (wind of death, enslave mind, astral fires, mind hunting etc.).
I could go for misfortune 2 and order 3 thought - all my augurs are fortune-tellers.

Dominion 4 is enough due to the H3 priests.

Augurs are Ermor bread and butter - cheap, expendable, can cast almost everything from astral and fire. I used expensive str elders for the specialized tasks, like summons (corpse constructs, archers with bane fire arrows, pale raiders, liches), wind of death, mind hunts, firestorms etc. Augur Elders are nice raiders too.

My first go-to research targets were fire elementals (easy tool to repel enemy invasions I guess. I thought also about making my infantry ethereal, but it couldn't protect them against ~25% of hits and magic weapons), stellar cascades and astral fires (someone on /domg/ pointed that it is the best what Ermor can do - and I agree. Get 4 augurs for communion, cast light of the northern star and see your enemies burn). After that I went for a Will of the fates, Wind of Death, horde of spooks, darkness, Liches and shit like that.

Fun fact - Wind of death kills your undead after the battle.

All of them are solid, cheap, sacred priests-researchers.

Helheim could recruit a D2B2 sorceress from site - I had no idea why he haven't recruit them, or even ask on /domg/ what could he do with them. They gave me access to blood so I could spam horrors, vampires, and later, maybe, demons. At the end of the game I had 3 horror-casters (and 4th one waited for ring of sorcery), and 5 vampires. I thought also about forging some blood stones for F1E2 flamens.

I had no Idea what to cast with my pretender - I should take Astral Nexus faster. Well of Misery and Stellar focus were awesome too - I >>almost<< had more gems than I could spend.

What pretender is best for TNN? W3E4N9 Hooded Spirit with 6 candles and O3S1H1G3 for scales gets me my bless, my scales, somebody to cast globals, and an amphibian teleporter that can grab thrones. Are 6 candles too low?
>>

Don't know about TNN but 6 candles is usually not too low, unless you're playing a nation with a special dominion effect, like Therodos or Asphodel. Having good priests also helps.
>>

The Hooded Spirit is really as good as it gets for anyone who gets it, it's ridiculously cheap. But consider taking it Dormant, it can do a lot of fighting at that point, worth more than 3 scales. Also gets you boots and hammers much sooner.

I'm ea Ermor and I desperately need help on how the fuck to kill this pretender. Its literally the only thing in the fort and I can't kill it no matter how many hundreds of units I throw at it. I've wasted two hours so far throwing shit at this bullshit invincible pretender but nothing works. I don't have experience with the game and I have NO IDEA at all what to do to counter this. What mages do I need to build, what paths? How can I possibly kill this thing?
>>
>>173579296
If you have E acess you can make smashers. Those will kill it right quick if you have any remotely durable guys to put them on
>>
>>173545452
You want to start making boosters around 15th-16th turn.

You don't really need extra scales - Growth 3 is enought.

Prod 2 and S9 are enought to expand, and you don't need more than E2 on pretender.
>>
>>173579427
I have it on my pretender and that's it. Where do you build those? What category are they under?
>>
>>173579427
Dusk daggers work too, though they'll deal less damage given the fountain's resistances. If you have any big guys, your range of working weapons increases by quite a bit
>>173579529
http://larzm42.github.io/dom4inspector/
Type 'smasher' in the item section. If you hit advanced, you can also search for armor piercing / armor negating weapons in general to see other workable gear.
>>
>>173579296
E1F1 flamen makes smashers. Give them to some thugs (bane lords\banes are okay), but don't forget about non-mindless chaff to take some beating (and arrows).

A2 mage (Augur elder, flamen with boosters) can make flying boots. Use them.

Opposition won't due to the range, so don't try it.
>>
>>173579876
How do you create banes?
>>
>>173580098
With augur elders. 7 death gems, conj 3.

You can use anything else too (indie commanders would do the trick - use mounted ones, cuz you want to get to it as fast as possible) if you don't swim in death gems\want to spend them wiser.
>>
>>173580343
I don't have shit for death gems. I just wasted fuckloads of turns empowering enough mages to make 4 smashers and gave them to my commanders who were all promptly killed, fucking 400v1 with this garbage commander. I don't even know if I want to continue bothering with this game if one unit can just sit in a fort and take on a dozen armies by itself. I'm about to just upload the save so you can see how utterly fucking broken this pretender is. Nothing will work on it at all. I'm at my fucking wits end with this shit. Its utterly insane. THREE DFUCKING HOURS OF THIS SHIT. I don't get it. I'm triyng everything.\
>>
>>173580554

>>
>>173582626
the game doesn't care about your nation, it wants all the mods you had enabled when the game was created.
>>

You had them enabled during game creation so we still need to download all the goddamit mods.

>>173582539
If you had the mods enabled at game creation, those modded nations/units are still in the game (even if the nation itself LA and can't be played), which can have an effect in a few possible (but very unusual) ways.

Alright.

In every castle, every turn you should recruit new mage. Mages shouldn't stand still - they have to research, seek for magic sites, cast ritual spells or fight.

More mages -> more firepower and research -> winning.

Think about them as like artillery. You need infantry to hold the line while your mages are doing various abracadabras, protecting your units and smashing enemies to pieces.

Sometimes you don't need big guns - a commando would do it better. This is where thugs coming in. You use them to counter various enemy supercommanders (like for example this oracle), raiding enemy provinces, or killing enemy mages (as an assasins).

Use https://larzm42.github.io/dom4inspector/. Choose your nation, press "national only" and see what you have. In you case it is F1S1 Augurs, Augurs Elders, and FLAMENS ( 1\4 are F1E1).
also look at the >>173543301.

You can use smashers or summon a water elemental and quicken him instantly.

Augur to keep chaff, quickened flying bane, and two water elementals just_in_case (8 armor-piercing attacks should be enough even against ethereal ones).
Total cost: 10E (2x smasher), 10A (for boots),extra 30 (2x water bracelets + 2x bottles of living water)W.

Just remember that it is really random (sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't) and it is better to bring some big guns for clearing a chaff. It is still few more guys to do research\sitesearch\wage another war.

Another very important benefit is sharing fatigue among all communion slaves rather than letting it render inefficient the caster. Empowerment doesn't do that. Astral Communion is even the ONLY way to cast certain spells because they have a very high fatigue cost (800 for example; a singular mage cannot endure more than 100)

Dominion is a key (and overlooked) mechanic in the game. Your pretender is much more vulnerable in enemy Dominion. Don't put him there unless 100% necessary. If I had a dollar for every scrub who fucked this up, I'd have like $5 from the most recent memegame alone.
>>
>>173628249
Yeah, every other time I stick my pretender in an enemy capital they either have no dom or my dom has spread there. This time I was playing a faction I knew nothing about in an era I never touch and barely utilized my mages (I didn't like them at all) and didn't build enough temples. I think my dominion strength was only 7-8 as well. What you can't see is Ulm creeping just north of my capital in that game with insane dom spread after they took over almost all of the map (I had priests preaching and temples in every single region up there and we were still being dom converted). I'll give EA Ermor another try some time and learn from my mistakes here but I don't think I like living factions too much (having to deal with starvation while besieging a citadel in a shitty region with too few resources sucks dick, and I don't even have any large creatures to break through forts faster).
>>
>>173628862
Blasting ancient roman music while plowing through Agarthians with the Ermorian legions was fucking great though. Amazing how atmospheric (and role-play friendly?) this game is if you just fill in the details with your imagination.
>>
>>173628862
You could like nature based nations too, they have supply bonuses.
>>
What are decent scales for a pop-killing undead faction? Should I go d9 or d10?
>>
>>173630010
One of those is going to be the next nation I try out. Its funny how I started with dom 2 but have only played a full game with about 7-8 different factions. Fast majority of my dom 3/4 experience has just been modding.
>>
>>173630057
it dpends on which nation.

never go 10 on any magical path.9 if you want the major bless, not more.

>>
>>173630891
Dalkrin, wanted to try it out. Its a mod nation though. Should I go 9 dom, 10?
>>
>>173631618
dom 10 usually is a good idea with special dom effect nations, but 9 doesn't make a big difference, so if you want the points for something else go ahead.
>>
>>173622908
it depends
>>
>>173632270
This is actually the one and only constant in the game. Always keep making mages.
>>
>>173632189
>>173631618
go dom 9 and build 5 temples rather than 10 dom. why? because in order to get 10 candles on your capital you will have to wait many turns and in those turns you'll build at least 5 temples which will increase your dom rating to 10.

scales are everything awful but luck 3 and some magic scales( i would say to go for at least 2).
look at the nation descriptions, apshodelf or example wants growth scales.
>>
>>173633406
I still need gold for those temples. Is the -45% income worth it? I know that those regions will be giving absolutely no income in short time but am I still going to have enough initial gold to keep building temples?
>>
>>173633889
If you dont need gold to build troops you should be fine. Luck 3 chaos 3 will usually keep you in the money anyway.

Should I go Ne bless or B?
Or something else altogether?
>>
>>173652998
pretty much any bless is good for Berry.
Best Mono bless is probably going to be w9 for se'ir, with N9 a close second.
B9 is easily your cheapest 'good' bless though
>>
>>173652998
>>173655867
N9 is about as good of a bless as W9 - not quite as good for se'ir, but better both for melqarts and making your humans more likely to survive incidental damage. You also have a good N9Ex chassis (bull) whereas you don't have anything cheap for W.

B9 is the cheapest big bless, but I had some discomfort using it since I like both se'ir and t-strikes
>>
>>173656035
you can always throw up lightning resist spells to mitigate anything but a direct strike.

Is it possible to fight an uw nation (atlantis) as ea ulm? I don't see anything but shit that lets a commander and maybe 10 units at a time go underwater. There's no way period I have anything that's going to take down their entire civilization with only a few units.

Also, I'm in a complete stalemate with Kailasa at a narrow mountain pass. Both ends have a fort and a gigantic death stack and they have several other stacks neighboring that one that attacks my army the next turn if I do knock this deathstack off the fort. All the iron/rock skin items I can build with earth don't count for shit against huge monkey men who all have bludgeoning weapons. I don't know what to stick on my father of winters to make him a thug. The pass is surrounded by water I don't have a reliable means to pass and neither of us can make any progress on the map. If I could build a few more temples I could dom convert them to death but I don't have access to any more regions until I push through into their territory. I don't have the supplies in my side of the pass to build a large enough force to push through but their side has 3-4x the population and way more supplies so they have way larger forces in every neighboring province ready to 1:5+ my wounded army the next turn. I'm at a total loss at to what the fuck to do anymore. Does ulm have any methods to wipe out tons of these fuckers at once? I have no choice but to fight them while severely outnumbered. I have fuckloads of shamans and warrior smiths but they can't do anything significant unless I empower them with fuckloads of gems.
>>
>>173670531
Summod? If so, you can forge UW items stupidly cheap by const 6.
>>
>>173670531
Oh, and forge cheap boosters rather than empower. Rain of stones is a trivial battlefield clear for you without summod, and still very accessible with it.
>>
>>173670894

>>

I'm only at evo 3 so rain of stones is a long way off and I still need to empower to give my units air 1 unless there's an item that does that?
>>
>>173671057
In that case, forget the troops and put together some thugs. You're fighting so, right?

And use RoS v monkeys. And steel maidens + flaming arrows/windguide archers. And for gear, Regen ring, messenger boots, frost brand, terror hat, vine shield, amulet of antimagic, and armor of knights.

>>173671306

>>
>>173674257
Mages will automatically do it if you tell them to cast spells outside their skill.

Giving an E1A1 mage 3 earth gems and telling him to [Summon Earthpower, Rain of Stones] will result in him burning a gem to cast earthpower, then burning two gems (one required by the spell, one to boost him up a level) for Rain of Stones.

Mages will also automatically use gems to reduce fatigue on tiring spells if you give them gems and leave the conserve gem usage box unticked.

>>173675501
Yes, it will be lost on death.

Heart of Life isn't a great choice for more skeletons either, since the chest wound it causes increases encumbrance severely. Girdle of Might and/or Boots of the Messenger would be more expensive but better. Alternatively, simply bring more vampires.

Malakal need every second to formulate his latest diplo.

Why is malakal still alive again?
>>
>>173690365
Because Malakal is a meme. Never trust him, but also why the fuck would you trust a single person in this game? Anything they are talking to you about is going to further their aims of winning, and you losing. Malakal is as good as any other player with a comparable winrate at strategy and tactics, maybe even worse than most. Carlix, Nick and Sy are three names that I can think of off the top of my head who are scarier than Malakal and I've only been playing since October of 2016
>>
>>173692328
>scarier than Malakal

t. malakal

Sasuga malakal sempai. quick with the defense.
>>
>>173692328
Having played with all of those, I'd put them Sy>Malakal>Nick>>>Carlix. Sy is good at Diplo, but less reliant on it. Malakal is better than Nick at nondiplo, and historically good at Diplo, but crippled by the always-attack-malakal-meme. Nick is good, but uses Diplo as a crutch and can fall apart against other competent players if he doesn't have it anymore.

Carlix is a meme. He's above average, but not anything special.

Thanks for the answer. I've got a few more questions if you'd be willing to answer them.

Do all sources of encumbrance count as 2x for fatigue calculations even if it's not armour? The wiki says that armour increases spell casting fatigue so I'm confused about non-armour sources of fatigue. For example, would chest wound cause cause 5 or 10 fatigue every spellcast (it's 5 encumbrance)?

Can blood feast cure all afflictions? Taking the heart of life then using blood feast seems like a pretty solid combo, considering it's 10 reinvigoration a combat turn for only 20 slaves and 1 misc slot.

cheap gold recruitable untis that are also usable in fight. i can't recall if precision or movement speed matter, but for sure flying units get a +1 to patrol.

Non-armor encumbrance isn't doubled for spellcasting, but 5 fatigue per cast is still a pretty big deal.

I guess that's still a net 5 fatigue per turn, I remembered it being less.

They cost 60/32 for the triple attack flail variant, and 60/30 for the AP axe variant.

Nation description suggests it's supposed to be hard to bless your sacreds, but you get a racial D3 Thaumaturgy-0 entire battlefield bless so you can just make a sorcerer lord and have as many deathstacks as you want.

Also, one of their sacred units (the olm) is basically a phallus with a ranged attack. Agartha has named his pretender “Penis” and received the titles “The Pillar that is Purity, the Most High, the Fortifier, Prince of Wind on the Waters.”

Those fire arrows really help. Had Althawolf cast black death in their territory and a summer mage using flames from the sky on huge stacks as I pushed into their territory after dom-killing the weaker nation up north. Took a while but soon enough we're capturing their capital and taking the last throne next turn.

Is collapse really only useful if several mages are casting it at the same fortress at once/used on the same turn you come in to siege? Several subsequent casts from one mage didn't seem to have much of an effect.

>>173773334
>oh boy I sure am glad this solid steel armor I'm wearing has absolutely no cloth padding. So much more comfortable this way

There needs to be some kind of AN damage and shock works best for elemental types.

In fact we need more AN spells to make doing damage in the late game easier.
>>
>>173760630
If you're in a duel with Pangea, Helheim performs better than Vanheim. So they're a blitz nation
>>
>>173773998

No, they do not. Vanheim has vastly superior sacreds.

Helheim is worse in every aspect. Maybe if you just LOVE death.
>>
>>173773904
>In fact we need more AN spells to make doing damage in the late game easier.
Nah, we just need less ridiculous buffs.

Letting people give their entire army ironskin for four gems and a mediocre mage was a mistake.
>>
>>173774097
Helhirdings are mounted. So their defense is reduced by 1/attack rather than 2/attack. With W9 they have a better chance to survive against a W9 white centaur than Vanhere. Do you even play the game?

>>

E2 with earth boots can cast it.

E3 with earth boots can cast it turn 1.

Level 2-3 isn't a particularly powerful mage, I'd put that at 5+ base path.
>>
>>173774378
>Helhirdings are mounted. So their defense is reduced by 1/attack rather than 2/attack. With W9 they have a better chance to survive against a W9 white centaur than Vanhere. Do you even play the game?
I've seen the vanhere v white centaur matchup. Vanheres win. I would expect helhirds to perform worse, given their significantly reduced killing power (assuming w9n9 centaur)
>>
>>173774436
yeah, E3s are good mages m8

They're available everywhere, they're not exactly something special.

Maybe cheap or common would be a better term? Regardless, letting people have easy access to mass-ironskin (or mass anything, really) has caused dom4 lategame to be completely awful.

You are lazy eh

Decisive victory for edgy elves but no surprise there as their sacreds have better stats and are more expensive. Do note I didnt script them and just put them all in the middle so elves got off the first attack. WCs insist on throwing javelins too.
