It's very much a skill you need to build around but it's actually pretty powerful when your party supports it.

Sorry anon, I've never tried a EO1 Troub before. It seems to me like Immunize/Bravery/Relaxing is all you need for boss battles, but the healing skills might be nice for improving the amount of time you can spend exploring.

The fact that most skills in 4 have sharply diminishing returns past half investment makes that less of a solution that it would have been otherwise.
Because of the way skill-trees are set up It's very simple to build a team that can cover every element, status effect and bind, those skills are more spread out over different classes in 3. There are also passives that make a class dramatically more effective for little investment, like Fortress with Fan Dance.

You can encounter the flowers outside of that one event.

Only if they don't get woken up by Blood Pact. And the ones using Blood Pact are Hollows so there is a chance of missing.
Also you will not always be able to kill them first because:

You want to kill Thunderspawns first.
As well as King Dragonflies because their skill gets more hits the more enemies died and can one-shot most of your party members.
So an encounter can have three high priority targets spread over both lines - and a Lion that prevents you from spamming area attacks.

Unfortunately it also wakes the Lions and if you use Quick Step + Origin Rune you will waste the sleep damage bonus.
Which can be enough for you to be unable to take out the Lion that turn.

So yes - if you have the perfect team Hall of Darkness is easy. But that's the case in every post-game except maybe EOU.
But if you have a team that is lacking key components - an Imperial, Origin Rune, Quick Step, a Fortress - then it is one of the most interesting post games we ever had.

Since I was missing some of these components I had to make do with what I have and solve the puzzle encounters with sub-optimal tools.
Most fights were won by using Burst skills which felt pretty good.
imagine if EO2U's post-game encounters weren't a complete joke but sometimes forced you to use Force - just for random battles.
Sure, Burst reloads faster than Force but the principle is comparible.

Since pre-reqs are so lenient and there were far less mastery 10-point sinkholes, there was really no harm on keeping a constant increase in efficacy.

I think making the later half less powerful has some interesting upsides.
For example Runemasters are more about the shape of their attacks than they are about simply matching colours like Alchemists and Zodiacs.
So having more skills is better for them but since their passives are also really good (since most effect all their skills) you would spread your points really thin.
Being able to have most active skills at half max rank -1 without being a waste of space helps with this problem while also making their TP last almost indefinitely.

The biggest problem with Balancing is really just Blood Surge being the wrong way around.
If the HP and TP costs would sink as the rank goes up instead of increase x/B would be way less good while Bushi main class would get a nice push.

Dragons vary wildly, with blizzard king being a total pushover, great dragon being utterly mediocre and storm emperor and fallen one being absolute cunts. Hall of darkness kinda varies as well - first floor is harmless outside of muskoid event and wrath bloom for lower levels (basically if you can't one turn it prepare for fun), second floor is kinda mediocre with thunder spawns being the only monsters of note and third floor is ass cancer.

Some things in Hall of Darkness take really low damage from everything but almighty (also called untyped) damage.
Namely Thunderspawns who sit around inactive taking single digit damage from every element (includding physical elements).
But as soon as one of the other monsters dies they become active and start spamming hart hitting area attacks that can one-shot many classes and two-shot all besides really tanky Fortresses.
There are a lot of dangerous enemies you want to deal with quickly but you can't since the Thunderspawn would activate and wreck your shit. And since they take so little damage they can be hard to kill quickly.

One of the FOEs takes similar damage to Thunderspawns and overall monsters tend take at least lower damage from many sources.
Except Origin Rune, Assault Drive and Silver Arrow - and of those only Origin Rune is area based.

But that's a very specific problem endemic to runemasters. Basically too many good skills that require high investments. One way to fix it would be to further decrease how many points it takes to max them. Another would be to make scaling linear intead of the "milestone" system we've always had (although admittedly that was already softened). And the last one would be to keep this diminished scaling exclusive to such classes.
Compare with medic which has the opposite problem, where getting high skill levels is so utterly worthless that an A/M does a better job in every regard.

Although I agree that by far the main problem was with blood surge. They really didn't think that skill through and ended up emulating EO3's biggest problem.

I just looked into it.
Turns out Thunderspawns don't take single digit damage from everything, only from Volt.
They do take 15% from everything else though.
And the Trigourd FOE takes single digit damage from everything.

Anyways, dormant Thunderspawns only have 242 HP.
If you have the class skill and some points in Rune Mastery and Runic Flare even one point in Origin Rune should be enough for them.
But four points are obviously better.

I think Medics biggest problem is not that their scaling is less good after the halfway point but that it is already too high at the halfway point.
Like all main healers they have the problem of healing more than a porperly built group should ever need while offering too little outside of it.

But if you lower the overall scaling Medics will start to feel utterly mediocre at every level.
And even if you only lower the scaling for early ranks and have them ramp up massively on the higher ranks your Medic will feel extremely weak in the early game and be a massive TP drain in mid to late game.

The only reason Monks were run in EOIII is the interaction between Form Qi and Protect Order giving you an incredible proactive healing buff and lots of free turns to use other buffs.
Basically you actually ran a Princess with another class skill (and bind removal and resurrect).

Main healers are just never good in EO since preventing damage is a better and more active strategy than healing it up.
Even in the original where Medics are king they weren't mainly healers - they were outstanding buffers and decent attackers with some healing attached to them.

The best thing that came out of level gating is that we got a poison skill that would not completely wreck the early game (since you could not take it early) but instead stayed relevant late game.

Although EOV seems to have found a better way by scaling poison damage with your level.

I'm staring EO2U soon and I'm thinking of good party combos.
Are there classes or class combinations I should NOT use? You don't have to tell me a good combo, I want to try making one myself

Ronin is severely underpowered in EO2U.
They lost Slantwise Cut from EOU and instead their stance entering skills now are glorified normal attacks.
I'm serious - they start at 100% normal attack damage and leveling them up puts them at 210% at level 10 and 295% at level 20 (new Grimoire system).
Since the damage always sucks and you have to level up a different skill to make Stances better and last longer they are not worth more than one point.
So basically any fight you start without having a stance procc will start with you doing basically nothing - including random battles.
Also they are the only pure damage class with a Force Boost that does not increase their damage.
And overall their damage is pretty lackluster and their TP too high.

You should not stack Troubadour and Sovereign. Both are buff classes so they steal each others main job.
Similarely stacking Protector and Beast is bad since two tanks is too much.

Sword Dark Hunter has anti synergy with War Magus since War Magi love ailments on enemies and Sword Dark Hunters love to remove them - but why would you run Sword on Dark Hunter in the first place?

And then there is the edge case of you using Barrier on the turn someone uses Stigmata but that is a really special case.

For your team synergy keep the new diminishing returns on buffs in mind:
Buffs/debuffs that increase the damage you deal and buffs/debuffs that decrease the damage you take get less useful the more you have.
The strongest in each category is 100% effective, the second strongest 60%, the third strongest 20% and everything beyond does nothing.
The Troubadours Preludes and Fantasias adnt he Beasts Protection Vow don't fall under that system though.
Charges and effects that are only in place for one turn like the Troubadour's Crusade also aren't effected by this system.
(Or in short: Don't take more than one or at most two buffs and or debuffs that increase your damage. And at most one buff that increases your defence.)

EOU ronin shared the first problem though. For most battles you either spend the first turn activating the stance manually or using slantwise cut. Now I don't remember if slantwise cut was stronger or not than the new activators and it saved you a couple skill points, but on the other hand the new attacks fully activate the stance so in that sense we're better off with the trade.

Anyway, the rest is true: not all strong for a class that requires setup and their force boost while unique and useful just loses to every other offensive class.

At least they have it better than actually useless classes from other games.

Slantwise Cut is only slightly stronger - but it's something since it's only a single skill to throw out in random battles so I prefer it.

In addition stances are buffs in EOU and while that means they take up a buff slot it also means the Troubadour's Taboo Rondo can increase their duration indefinitely instead of getting a three turn grace period in exchange for having no proper Force Boost.
And lastly Stances have a 33% chance to activate at the start of a battle at rank 10 instead of rank 20. So in EO2U you need a Grimoire slot to recreate that effect.

Overall Ronin is a bit easier to use in EOU and other classes are not that far above her since Force Boosts don't exist.

Probably because normal shit doesn't work on the insect.
The scientists report talk about how they tested different stuff and nothing had any effect. They certainly didn't start with water and cotton candy to try and kill this thing but its natural defences are just too strong.
Nightseekers for example have poison able to melt some of the strongest monsters out there in mere seconds but it does shit all against the insect.

If you substitute the color coded chemicals for neurotoxins and other fancy stuff their research looks somewhat believable.
"First you have to use the neurotoxin to temporarely disable its reflex to flush dangerous substances out.
Then you can inject the acid to burn the fleshy insides of the chitin elements it uses to cover its breathing orifices.
But careful - if you use pesticides after the neurotoxin it will still cramp up and hold its breath making in invulnerable to further chemical attacks."

Whatever the trees are made of it's certainly not some everyday wood or dirt or something.

EOIV is a somewhat special case - in the Hall of Darkness it is outright stated that they build the tree after the apocalypse while they were actively starving because everthing was poisonous.
Even with the help of Vessels, Sentinels and Hollows before they turned rogue they barely managed to built one tree.
And by then most of their scientists that understood how any of that shit actually worked were dead and the rest formed the empire with a lot of dangerous half-knowledge.

For comparison Ricky comes from before the apocalypse so the Yggdrasil project was already underway in Etria.
But from the diary entries in the 5th Stratum and what Visil says its clear he barely made it in time while everyone around him was dying.

So I don't hink trees are just something you can make on a whim.

Just starting EO2U. Is there a point in picking a medic over a War Magus? I guess what I'm asking is whether the War Magus sacrifices healing capabilities for attack strength, or something like that.

War magus has incredible attack strength with one of the best attack skills in the entire game.
They also have Barrier which with some Grimoire investment is able to prevent any binds, ailments and even debuffs on the entire party.

Medic has better bind and ailment removal and the best panic button in the game (it revives, heals everyone to full and cleanses everything).

They heal in different ways.
Medic has your standard heal skill. Whenever they are able to act, healt will rise.
War Magus heals slightly less but still enough in my opinion - and their heal is cut in half. One half at the start of the turn one at the end.
Which means it's decent reactionary and proactive healing in one skill.
Also War Magus has Vampire which heals their line for a percentage of the damage they deal against targets that have an ailment. Since they deal so much damage and are so very slow it's often enough to keep your frontline topped of.

So that's four regular strate with 4 floors and the post-game stratum with 5.

That's 21 floors and so even smaller than the High Lagaard one with 25 floors. And that one seems to continue far underground if the Calamity in Ginnungagap is impriosoned by it.

Also, tree roots tend to grow very far, so much that their size often surpasses the tree itself. Which something you probably want to achieve if your tree has to clear pollution from a good chunk of the earth's surface.
Also I hope that's the Untold rendition of Yggdrasil and High Lagaard, because the EO2 one is pitifully small. Just how the hell is that a DUCHY? And how can the inside of the tree be so massive when the tallest tower in the "city" is like 10 stories tall and almost reaches the canopy?

Then there's Etria's yggdrasil. That thing isn't a tree buck a forest made from a clonic tree and I have no idea of how to quantify that.

And in EO2 High Lagaard is really tiny. That's a military outpost at most, not even a proper Fortress.

When I fought her she varied her attacks quite a bit. It was pretty tough to quess right when she would use a her ice attack and when not.
Picking the wrong defensive skill could pretty quickly kill one or more of my party members.

The art that includes Ginnungagap's ravine shows the city and the tree being a bit more reliable and less cramped with the tree still being impressive.
Then there's this Lagaard street view that I don't recall ever seeing in game. I wish they had used this for the city menu instead of EO2's pitiful depiction.

Still, High Lagaard's is massively dwarved by the one in Arcadia. Which to this point I don't even know if we get to climb at all in the old-fashioned way.

From what I read of translations we climb the tree in your standard fashion (so from the inside).
All the stuff around Arcadia is only used in the character creation screen to show where the different races live.
There are some rumors they originally planned to go the EOIV route with an overworld but nothing concrete is known.

Also afaik EOV goes with the same "the labyrinth was once open, got closed off and is now open again" we see in EO(U) and EO2(U).

There was just no way. EO2U sales were lackluster only on the launch window and recovered quite well after that.
But even disregarding that, the scale EO5 just made no sense. All the elements present in that drawing require a game that's about three times the size of the usual EO game. Not just because of the number of floors and dungeons but also several systems like travelling (EO4 style just wouldn't do justice to the scale), scaling the game, levels and skills to fit so many floors or constructing a critial path that goes both upward and away from Yggdrasil in a cohesive manner (again, the Gladsheim/Ginnungagap way wouldn't cut it). And then a story and script that can justify and wrap all of that up. Additionally, it should be engaging enough at advanced points that it doesn't cause player burnout.

This was just horribly ambitious and it would need to be a project on a scale unlike anything that's on 3DS. I bet the budget would be closer to Persona than past EO games.

On the other hand, it was brilliant. The finished game delivers just enough to satisfy EO fans since it's by no means a smaller or poorer game than usual and the gargantuan dimensions of everything on that key visual inflated hype enough for it to last a whole year with no news or updates. Win by feeding the buzz for a year with just one single hit, win by delivering a good enough game.


The cartridge thing is pretty shitty though. Specially if they intended to be fancy with the labyrinth design. Either keep using larger cartridges or tell art design to knock down ambitions by a notch but don't go for both, you assholes.

Why even bother with that?
Gladsheim is a day's worth of travel away from Etria and you don't travel the distance yourself.

You could easily have smaller EOIV style lands that are not directly connected.
Just make sure to have Yggdrasil stand in another direction and maybe have some other viewpoints like mountains in the distance and it would still somewhat feel like a world.
You just don't get to explore every unimportant area of it.

Set the first four stratums in the homelands of each race and the fifth one (and post-game one) in the tree.
No need to get all fancy and grand.

Well I figured out why we'll never get a fan translation of EOV
After extracting everything from the cia, you can see that the people that made the game decided to encrypt the most of the game's content behind a weird file type.
There was only one person working on decrypting it, and while he managed to open it up he never figured out how to close it again and dropped it almost a year ago

However resistances are additive.
If you don't know: Whenever anyone is hit with and ailment/bind they get 30% accumulated resistances.
In EOIII there is no way to remove them, in EOIV there is only the Archanists Releasal Spell. In the Untolds they fall of after a certain duration. I have heard either 8 or 10 turns.

So if you in your case start with a 30% panic resist accessoire all panic chances get multiplied by 70%.
But the moment you get paniced you get accumulated resistances so the next time panic tries to land on you it gets multiplied by 40%.
The time after by 10%.
And then you are fully immune - unless the resistances fall off before you get inflicted again.

The duration also stacks. So if its 10 turns after you get hit once its 20 turns the next time and 30 turns the time after.

In EOIII and EOIV it is pretty easy to be immune to every ailment and bind a boss throws at you and in the Untolds you can be so at least for a pretty long time.

Warlock is truely great.
One specialisation gets all three magical elements as a hit all attack the other all three physical elements - but the physical ones have different secondary effects, wow!
I'm surprised they didn't go for the three different binds as secondary effect but they were probably worried Warlock would take over the roll of Cestus.
So they came up with stun and... deals less INT-damage? Really scraping the bottom of the barrel here...
Alter and Multistrike Form are slightly interesting but that's two skills on the entire class the rest is copy pasted with minor alterations.
Even the physical skills aren't new. Alchemists have those in EO2 and they also hit everyone.

runemaster is mostly better there outside of not having runes of fuck your resistance, you can even say it's hideously broken there (paralyze on every lightning spell is OP and will be nerfed)

Dancer/Nightseeker has decent damage with Blade Flurry and Sword Dance since they will deal 2-8 hits with each normal attack.
But all off-hand hits will only deal 30% damage with Blade Flurry at maximum subclass rank.
Instead they are pretty good at inflicting binds and ailments. If you forge on your weapons what the rest of your party is missing every one of their hit has a chance to inflict it. It's not a big chance but the amount of hits makes up for that.

The only reason to not use subclasses instantly is if you want to use one of the still locked classes as a sub and don't want to Rest to reset your subclass. But Resting only costs 2 levels so it's not that punishing.
Even if you don't plan on using anything from your subclass picking one gives you 5 free skill points.

Dancers can wield swords and bows. I think the damage is more valuable than the additional slots.
What I did is forge on all binds and some ailments, one forge each. In EOIII the first forge for one bind/ailment gave you a 6% chance to inflict it and every additional one for the same bind/ailment only increased it by 3%.
I'm not sure if it's still the case but that scattershot approach worked pretty well.
Just make sure you don't forge ailments high on the hierachy on your offhand if you have some lower ailments on your mainhand - if they overwrite a weaker ailment you get accumulated resistances for both.
That can also happen just by putting multiple ailments on one weapon and none on the other but the chances are a bit lower.
And when you have more slots than binds/ailments you want to use some elemental forges can be quite nice for coverage.
There can only be one element on a weapon but you can have different ones in your mainhand and offhand.
Don't use splash or pierce Forges though. Sword Dance will not procc with those.

Problem with Sovereign is they lose a lot of support for a little damage.
They have no Preludes and Circles are not as strong as Fantasias as they have to be used every turn.
So they can not push damage as much as a Troubadour.

Arianna's saving grace is that Protect Order and Order Mastery allow her to heal so Chloe can ruch for Ailing Slash.
But after Ailing Slash is maxed, Vampire is online and Chloe has points left over to learn healing stuff that becomes less and less useful.

And in both story and classic Sovereign is hurt by not having a Force Boost and a fairly weak Force Break.

Hit-taker isn't bad, it's just that protection vow is better but it takes a while to get there.
It also has those disadvantages you mention (unless you're positive your whole party can survive any single hit the enemy throws at you).

Hit-taker is easy to use but it can get you killed more easily (and might run out of coverage before covering for the characters that really need it).
Protection vow needs more preparation and doesn't get increased priority but otherwise allows you to do more stuff like throw in additional buffs or defend and gives your beast a larger defense increase.

That's why a EOV translation is still not feasable - no one knows how to recrypt it after changing shit.

I looked into it and here is how it works:
On the thrid floor you will find a unique accessesoire in a chest.
Putting that on a character gives everyone at home 10% of any XP gained (it reads like this includes quest and mission XP but I'm not sure).
Now keep in mind in a five man party every member only gets 20% XP so basically everyone at home gets half of what your active team gets.
So its a maxed out Combat Study that costs no skill points but a single accessoire slot.

Unfortunately it's not the same amount of XP so your characters at home will fall behind.
But if you actually rotate your party having more than five active members should be less of a pain than in earlier games.

The fact that EO4 has skills behind level gates means that some classes taper off or are late bloomers, which is less true for the other games. Sniper is very meh in the late game, but pretty good up until then, for example.

I didn't even need to use immunize on foes for the last stratum. For rest of the game it was bravery + immunize + relax for foes and bosses and just bravery for normal fights.

That's pretty much what they are supposed to do - clear every random encounter and make your way between the bosses that much smoother.
For bosses you have Survivalists Multi-Shot and Medic's Immunize so Medic and Landsknecht can still outdamage the enemy.

Landsknecht in a proper group can melt FOEs and bosses in a few turns.
A proper group is not some very specific build but any party focussing on multi-hit attacks that would be pretty good even without Landsknecht.

Runemaster has really damage both single target and mutli-target throughout the game and can create weaknesses in enemies to increase their own damage along with the rest of their group.

Fortress has a strong early game, middling midgame and extremely strong lategame. With any source of healing most FOEs and bosses that are actually hard can barely touch your group.

With two out of these three you will have very little problem throughout the game.
With all three, a Dancer and a Sniper you have a standard Link party that makes the game extremely easy.

Your party is completely fine although a bit save.
If you give your Dancer the Waltzes and Wide Dance they will be able to do the Medics job in fight better than the medic while also offering other buffs and a lot of normal attacks for Links.
If you slap a Archanist subclass on anyone with Bracing Walk you have all the out of combat healing you need.

You could swap in a Sniper for binds and Squall Volley as Link fodder but you can also just leave your team as is.

I'd say Medic is weaker but I also never got this general's love for Imperial.
They can make one big number once and then they are absolute trash for a few turns.
And even worse their shit AGI means they can wiff their big damage.

Meanwhile Landsknecht can put out equally as much if not more damage every turn between rebuffing Improved Link.
But I guess it's just not one big number.

I bought Medicas for out of combat healing and as soon as subclassing got available Bracing Walk was all I needed.

Taking a Medic along is slightly cheaper and can sometimes be more TP efficient (if you only need to heal once since Regen Waltz is a bit pricey) but you can get through the early game without them just fine.

But it's probably still good they are in the game for less experienced players.
If you for example don't know how useless armor is and constantly buy new helmets and shit for everyone you will be short on funds so a Medic can be vital.

it's hard to ignore dealing thousands of damage reliably as long as they are kept alive. Have fun beating lions and king dragonflies without imperial either. They're good at endgame and blow up everything before, destroying bared essence in 1 turn was fun.

playing through eo2u. Still pretty early in the game. I have a War Magus, but no hexer. Should I swap out a party member for loli hexer or can I make it through the game with grimoires later?

But without them a fron-line class with middling VIT that takes more damage whenever they use their big nukes is not that comfy to use.
So your party needs to fulfill at least some conditions for Imperial to be viable.

And that's the big downside about them.
Their terrible AGI means especially in boss fights they are prone to missing.
Unless of course you go Nightseeker with Speed Boost but then you forgo Bushi's 45% damage increase for a 30% chance of a skill triggering twice.
Which while funny if it happens on a Drive skill is not very reliable.

Neither of these makes Imperial a bad class but they still have some downsides even outside of their bursty nature.

Hexer is one of the strongest classes in the game.
Curse mastery, Curb Atk UP and their Force Boost Creeping Curse make them so good at inflicting their ailments and binds it's almost scary.
Venom Curse can clear random encounters up to the fifth stratum reliably. So while their damage is rather low in boss fights they are not dead weight in any fight.

But their low damage in boss fights is the big point - what's the rest of your team like?
If your damage falls too low a Hexer might not be a good fit.

Hexer also has access to all binds and they are going to land a lot more often with them than with a Gunner.

Since a Hexer transforms your War Magus from a support that rarely can do damage (if you are fine with burning your Force boost) into a full damage dealer with some support stuff on the side I think you can go for it.

As another anon said, the War Magus Cuts are really good at binding enemies (they start at a higher base chance than most skills ever achieve) so i don't think your Hexer will need more than the one point in their bind skills they get for free from learning Curse Mastery.
Pick a few ailments you like, get Frailty Curse to increase your damage and you should be good to go.

Anyway, you odn't really want a hexer for poison damage. Binds, debuffs and the "debuffs" associated to other ailments are much more valuable (and fear is sadistically fun to exploit).
Hexer is the one protecting your party, not removing the enemy.

Gunner and alchemist are redundant indeed, you can do without one of them. I found gunner to be more impressive and sustainable for a good chunk of the game, but otherwise putting on a certain food buff and using compressed jars with the alchemist grants the highest damage.

Chase landsknechts also work wonders with palm alchemists, but you have to be more careful so the alchemist doesn't get killed.

To EOs credit men are wearin skimpy clothing almost as often as women.
I think Troubadours and Nightseekers are the big exception.
Usually when the female portraits are nearly naked so are the men. And when the men wear armor so are the women - although sometimes stuff that isn't armor gets a bit skimped on like the Landknecht midrif.

Imperials don't need to set up for two turns to be useful. With its skills, you can reduce the time you can't use Drives. If you complain about their Agi, you're using them wrong; you're supposed to use Quick Step of whatever it was called in 4 to get a fast nuke. Lastly, you're better off using Runemaster as a subclass since the non elemental skills are ass.

Well obviously they do, it's not faaf "slap some grimoires and it's unstoppable". Still they are one of the top classes offering really good damage as long as you keep them from dying or being statused (which you would be doing anyway)
