PHI, you're doing gods work!

Ideas guys, I’d like your help.

I’ve just got a new job, which means all that time in the evenings I had to spend on self improvement to get that job, is finally free! Now I can get on and do what I’ve wanted to do for ages, and make some vidya.

The idea I’ve had for a while, is to make a “sports management sim”-like game, akin to things like championship manager. But have it based around running a MMO-PvE guild. While setting up teams to do raid progress is the bulk of the focus, I plan to include a lot of bullshit and drama that you get from a guild. Dealing with lootwhores, the husband/wife combination of players where the wife is just TERRIBLE, but if you drop her, you’ll lose the husband.

So, I’ve got to come up with my own made-up MMO, and I’m looking for some ideas off you guys to add to my own.

Classes – I’d like to branch out a little from just the “Warrior/Mage/priest” types
Stats – Looking for stats not just for the “characters”, but the “person” playing the character. So shit like “persistence” and “initiative”
Traits – Traits are quirks that each of your guildies have, they can be both positive and negative. For instance “Female(Male)” has a chance to bring down the moral of a random Male guildie.

Alright, fuck that shit. After realizing that I don't really want a vulnerable web server running at home I made a twitch account like anon recommended in the last thread, so here's my first pathetic little unity project (followed a tutorial, but added score handling myself). Could anybody give it a quick spin to check if it werks? Takes just a few sec. Thanks. Just curious if it runs on other systems, though there should be no reason why not.

Just a heads up that Amnesia Fortnight 2017 is happening now (at least the first part of it). I've personally really enjoyed seeing the videos they've put out in the past and getting a glimpse into some game dev process at Double Fine. If nothing else, they are at least very creative folks.

It's working for me, but your scoring system is a little wonky if you manage to get the ball stuck between a paddle and a wall, or if you hit it from the side of your paddle.

Trying to find workflow for looking at what parts of a game i should work on. A big part of the game will be menues and management, but i figure ill start with combat since thats fun and where the work from management is supposed to culminate. Sort of.

Tried researching other answers. First results were by nodevs and zoe quinn... didnt she only ever make a overly simple text-based?

Can i get yesdev input on where to focus time or some articles from decent devs on it? Im using game maker

Current thought: movement, interaction, basic combat come first followed by intense menues
>>
>>173120053
lol if you hit the ball from the side when its near an edge, you can knock it out of the game.
>>
>>173120278
>>173120297
Thanks a lot for testing. And yeah I know, the scoring system is crap. You should only get points for hitting the other player's back wall, the respawn the ball and so on. Just started with getting into Unity 4.6 yesterday, and most of it is from a tutorial anyways. Right now I only wanted to test the workflow, get it online and verify that other people can run it.
>>
>>173120420
Really? Didn't happen for me so far, and to be honest I have no clue what I should do about it (except for checking if the ball is out of bounds) - must be a fuckup of Unity's collision system, maybe the ball is getting too fast when you bounce it between paddle and your own back wall. Thanks for the heads up.

Ultimately it's up to you how/where you want to spend your time. But it's pretty normal to start with the actual game elements and preliminary debug controls, then add "boring" stuff like menus, loading/saving maps etc later on, sometimes even shortly before releasing.

I'm not related to will smith

but the thing is, that on her shirt in the red part it looks bulging, but on her chest, its like flat and no lines

so I'm thinking, maybe she has such modest breasts, and then is wearing an immodest shirt with it that girls dont normally do and that is what that look is or then again, maybe they really are big but then this part about the chest below the neckline is just the camera angle or a bodyfat thing?

it's possible but it'd take a lot of fine-tuning

the issue is that ascii games are effectively very low "resolution" since individual characters basically act as pixels, so you'd need to figure out strategies to deal with that

Is there anything game maker can't do within the realm of 2D?

I already have a reasonable grasp of gamemaker. As my scope grows however and I'm looking into making more of an actual -game- rather than a few tutorials mashed together, the looming $100 price tag keeps inching closer.
I suppose $100 isn't a huge amount to expect to pay on a hobby

>The term lolicon is a portmanteau of the phrase "Lolita complex";[1] it describes an attraction to young or prepubescent girls, an individual with such an attraction, or lolicon manga or lolicon anime, a genre of manga and anime wherein childlike female characters are often depicted in an "erotic-cute" manner (also known as ero kawaii), in an art style reminiscent of the shōjo manga (girls' comics) style.

Well, i just started devving at sunday, so not much. I downloaded sfml library and managed to kickstart empty project with it. Now i have drawn several orthogonal lines which symbolize future tileborders. And i wrote a function which takes coordinates of tiles and transform it in coordinates of pixels, so i can render white rectangle (which might be some sprite in the future) at exact tile i want.

Both are symptoms of the same underlying problem: a sexual attraction to children. The false dichotomy here assumes a sort of reverse causality: that merely being attracted to drawings of sexualized children makes one attracted to children in real life. In reality, though, the pedophile already had an attraction to children, and an attraction to drawings of children is just a manifestation of it.

so it's not
>you like fictional X

instead it's:

i skimmed the shitposting, let me set yall straight

1. loli and eroticism are inseparable. "loli" is only synonymous with "cute little girl" insofar as you are sexually attracted to cute little girls or referring to a character in a setting in which she is the desire of characters who are attracted to cute little girls. any non-pedo people using the term "loli" without that context are either willingly promoting pedosexuality or are ignorant of the term and will stop using it when they learn it's root and context.

2. erotic doesnt automatically mean pornographic you retard.

3. pedosexuals did nothing wrong. please no bigotry-based bullying in AGDG, this is a skills-based bullying thread.

This is a humble reminder that learning how to develop your game from scratch (that is, not relaying in game engines such as unity and GMS) will take you closer to deploying a game and beat your competitors.

Because games and game development are so popular, and you are competing against other games for attention, it is in your interest to use more performant tools that allow you to program your game without cutting any feature or depending on closed software.

If you are interested in defeating your main oponents (those using game engines, like the ones listed in the op poster), here are some tips:

- Use efficient and performant programming languages, such as c++, rust or nim.
* cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/
* doc.rust-lang.org/book/
* nim-by-example.github.io

- Learn algorithms:
* coursera.org/specializations/algorithms

- Learn maths and physics:
* khanacademy.org/math
* khanacademy.org/science/physics

- Learn how to get the most out of your cpu:
* dataorienteddesign.com/dodmain/
* learncpp.com/cpp-tutorial/79-the-stack-and-the-heap
* fgiesen.wordpress.com/2016/08/07/why-do-cpus-have-multiple-cache-levels/

- Learn how to do graphics:
* opengl-tutorial.org/beginners-tutorials/

Good luck.

Think about it in this way: understanding how your computer work might not secure you success, yet it gives you a huge advantage in this race.

You might say that the latest famous indie game done in unity didn't put any effort into engineering at all, but this is only illusory. You cannot see how many hours, days and months the developers behind successful unity (and GMS) games had to put to work around its inherent limitations.

You can say to yourself "I don't need anything else, i'll relay in my luck" or think wisely and increase the likelihood of being success by expending some time learning more about computers.
Everything depends on you.

There is no "supposed to". Lots of people use preexisting terminal libraries because it's easier/faster/more bug free/more legit to the retro aesthetic.

But if you use sprites you can make certain things a lot easier on yourself (eventual graphical tile support, graphical effects that aren't ascii only, pretty borders are shit, even effects that are ascii only but break out of console-ness (shaking letters), etc)

Consider this:
The term 'otaku' was made famous in Japan at the end of the 80's, when Tsutomu Miyazaki kidnapped, raped, killed and ate 4 girls of ages 4 to 7. In his house many TV recordings were found, but what stood out to the media were lolicon manga and anime. From then on, otaku was synonymous with pedophile.
Except, from then on, cases of pedophilia (like this or not) are pretty much inexistent.
In other words, crazy people rape children, smart people fap to loli.

The sad thing is that she can't write for shit. Depression quest is deathly boring even for an amateur visual novel and she clearly doesn't understand anything about how men talk, act or think, despite making the choice to write her main character as a male for some reason.
The whole gamergate saga pretty much a lifesaver for her game dev "career", because she doesn't really seem to have any discernible talent for anything game related.

>>
>>173137085
It helps to do some prototyping for features you've never written before, just to get an idea of how the concept works before you pollute your codebase so that when you do implement it, the code is cleaner and more maintainable. Maintainability is so god damn important fuck

You can sit down and make plans when your game is already decently fleshed out and you know what features/ideas/plot events will work and what won't. Till then just do what you feel like.

I double checked pretty much everything. Building the normals, importing them, or importing them with the tangeants resulted in the same thing. Exporting with smoothing to edge/face/normals only changed how bad it looked (I can't remember which option but one added an extra "hard edge" on each quad)
I'll re-check later on, something might have slipped unnoticed but so far everything I've tried did nothing.

Why would you intentionally make things difficult? When you're having a normal problem there's a huge difference between a sphere and a cube.

I actually don't see anything abnormal with your cube. Naturally, different programs are going to shade 90* smoothed corners differently because a 90* corners aren't smooth.

I'm just speaking brashly. I think most people want to see gogem hit by a truck once they've had their fill of him. He's an unbelievable "person" and the kind of member of society we used to tie to trees and leave behind for good fucking reason. People as impossible and obnoxious and arrogant as him cause blood feuds and murders and will generally turn any community to shit if you don't get rid of them. And if you think that's an exaggeration you have to take a big picture look at just how caustic Ryan's behavior and personality is and just how long he's been doing it.

It's not just in here, he has repeatedly attempted to antagonize society outside of 4chan but crumples into a little bitch ball and makes excuses for himself everytime. He is mental and a burden on any group in society or any community he latches to.

>>173152971
And I'll never forget why I made it.

>>173152985
The left was a racing game that required somewhat fancy car physics that I couldn't figure out myself, and the guy I brought on to help with it quit halfway through implementation. I didn't see any reason to keep making courses if the physics and controls weren't there.

The middle was a space station I was making with a ST:TOS/DS9 vibe for a survival game. I could never settle on a scope for it, so I never found a programmer to help me with it. And that kind of killed my interest in it.
>>
>>173153140
D is de facto garbage collected.

>>173153175
I'm serious. If you're considering using C or C++ for a game you should really look at Rust instead.

>>173153307
>none of them actually use it
>nobody actually likes coding in Rust
This isn't true and most of the time is just projection from people who tried Rust for a few hours and got frustrated because they didn't try to understand the ownership and borrowing rules. Once you understand it, you can work with it.

>>173153442
This is the current situation. It's hard to sell the industry on Rust when their C and C++ code is legacy and new code is written in managed or scripting languages.

However, Rust is gaining traction and has incredible results in the mostly open source high performance applications development niche. New libraries written in Rust tend to blow away their established C and C++ alternatives when it comes to correctness and performance.
>>
>>173153237
He doesn't know how to make games. It's like someone teleported some inbred retard from the 1800s who has never seen electricity and had him design games.
>it can be a rock paper scissors game with a twist!
>it can be a game where you fill out forms that senators fill out to pass bills and stuff!
>it can be a game where you stand still and look around and if you look in the wrong direction you lose!

He designs """games""" that only a person who has been dropped on their head as a baby would consider. Then he gets self righteous and argumentative about it with everyone who isn't a retard. Rinse and repeat.

>i also saw his lewd jam game and how he handled that whole agdg jam and what he is doing now with loli jam and can see very plainly he is cancer.
The lewd jam """"game"""" was hilarious. He still refuses to accept that text forms are not games. Even more amazing is that he chooses to make these in Flash and Unity when he could just make a """"game"""" like this in HTML5 if he weren't such a simpleton.
>>
>>173153892
>However, Rust is gaining traction and has incredible results in the mostly open source high performance applications development niche. New libraries written in Rust tend to blow away their established C and C++ alternatives when it comes to correctness and performance.

I believe this is so. I've been seeing some benchmarks where Rust can kick C++'s ass in several cases. If it keeps up, I would even consider checking it out.
>>
>let me show you how much I hate googum by writing this biography complete with citations
>>
>>173153892
Yeah you shouldn't use D for your small amateur indie game because it's garbage collected, instead learn a whole new ugly language.
>>
>>173154050
Why would anyone use D over C# or even Java for games if they don't care about garbage collection? The latter languages have a lot of libraries.

Even Rust has more of a userbase and ecosystem than D at this point and D is a decade older. I don't see any reason to use D from either standpoint.
>>
>>173153892
>I'm serious. If you're considering using C or C++ for a game you should really look at Rust instead.
imo most people use c/c++ not because they like them at all but because in terms of libraries/frameworks available there's no other choice.
rust is way too young to have anything on that level, unless you want to spend a disgusting amount of time trying to integrate with existing c/c++ libraries
>>
>>173153959
>He designs """games""" that only a person who has been dropped on their head as a baby would consider.
That would explain more than him designing bad games. In fact it would explain everything.
>>
>>173154192
D is a lot more like C++ than either C# or Java, which are both completely based on classes, there are also bindings for everything you could possibly need. The guy complained about headers, he wanted C++ but without headers, D is the closest to that, by a huge margin, but of course you wanted to shill your language.

Yes, the big caveat of using Rust now is that you miss out on the extensive, battle-hardened C++ libraries which are especially useful for physics.

That said, if you're looking for a physics library there's nphysics which is a pure Rust 2D/3D physics library. It's not at the level of Bullet yet but it's perfectly usable as is and it's under active development.

It's not bullying to talk about someone objectively. Every time you jackasses discuss it, half of you are going on rumor and the other half are importing memes from >>>/g/dpt.
Rust is a good language for enginedevs. The catch is, it's no use to any other gamedevs right now. You shouldn't be telling people to write their own engines and therefore you shouldn't be telling them to use Rust. The people who actually write code in Rust (I've sunk maybe 40,000 lines into it myself) already know all this, so I can only assume the people who shill it all the time are memeclowns from /dpt/. Why should I rewrite their engine when I could write my own? It would probably take more time to even start doing the required modifications because it's a very complex piece of software with non-trivial dependence between modules. PlatformerCamera.webm

A bit of work on the camera today, derived almost entirely from a nifty little example piece by the AHiT devs.

The most obvious bit is the depth-occluded shadowing; this is something that's been in every Mario game since sunshine and it's really, really useful.

The one that's a bit more unique, at least to my knowledge, is what the AHiT devs call 'camera whiskering'; basically, you do a fanned out series of traces in an arc to either side of the camera, and use a running average of the trace locations to set your camera distance, rather than a single line trace. This causes the camera to smoothly pull in tighter as it starts to near a wall, rather than snapping forward as it makes contact WITH the wall, which can help eliminate disorientation in tight quarters.

They actually had a third example which I wanted to implement as well (transparency on all objects too near the camera, to avoid clip-through on objects that don't obstruct the camera's position) but UE4 doesn't have an exposed way to do it, short of making every material a masked material.

Which is dumb as fuck, because UE4 can absolutely do dithered fades on non-masked materials (it uses them for ALL LOD fades) but there's no exposed way to force it for a specific object at a specific time. I guess theoretically I could manually override the ultra-near-field LOD for any object and make it an empty mesh, so the object vanishes when the camera is close enough to get a "detail level" of it, but the issue is it would also vanish any nearby objects that DON'T obstruct the view.
>>
>>173171830

>>
Unity 5's graphics videos should be considered false advertising, jesus christ. the engine's default graphics look like they're from 2002 unless you spend $500 on Asset Store products to get all the features that come right out of the box for free in UE4.

better option: use UE4

the whole point of game engines is to give you a basic framework so you can work on the GAME, not spending forever coding shaders and all kinds of tools and shit to bring up the graphics from 2002 to 2017. if I'm going to do that I might as well not use a premade engine at all.

>>
>>173171830

depends. how low do you want to go? if you want to learn basics of 2d games, then go c++ with sdl or sfml
>>
>>173171830
If you want to learn programming (and have no knowledge of it) then Python is a good place to start. Python is pretty awful for gamedev though. So if you're trying to become better at programming, then I say stick with the book, but don't try and make a game with it. After you finish the book, move onto another language to make games.
>>
>>173173123
that's a great advise anon!
thank you, I'll start reading it tonight after class
>>
>>173172972
I mean, I imagine the back-end process is basically "treat all relevant materials as masked for the purposes of this operation" and then it loads both models and does the lerp, it's not like it'd be more PERFORMANT than masked materials, but it'd be helpful to not have to configure every single fucking material as masked, then plug up a dither map, then plug up a lerp parameter, then get a dynamic material instance, then set the fade.

There's got to be a more concise, automatic way of doing it.
>>
>>173173081

>>173171830

Serious predictament here:

Do I use established norms for my world building, or do I completely rebuild it from scratch?

Examples
>Humans ride Horses
>Humans eat Pigs
>Humans eat Apples
>Vampires are their "classic" definition where they fear stakes to hearts and are repelled by garlic.

vs.
>Humans ride a currently unnamed quadrapedal animal in a similar fashion to a horse
>Humans eat currently unnamed feeder animals SIMILAR to pigs or cows, but distinct
>Humans eat fruit from trees similar to, but definitely not apples
>Vampires can be redefined by whatever rules I choose

I'm strongly considering using medieval folklore (and specifically scottish/irish, and some germanic) for a basis. The issue I have is I don't want people bitching and whining that things like
>my X mythological creature isn't totally accurate
>my Y thing isn't appropriate for the setting

I'm leaning towards just redefining things, but I'm wondering if people will give a shit about my deepest lore when I could just call a Pumbickler a fucking apple and not have to bother.
>>
>>173173123
Python is shit to learn programming, it shares a lot of idioms with C without actually having a justification for it. It also does a lot of really fucking crappy shit like leaking temporary variables out of their scope and significant whitespace. That kind of garbage doesn't happen in other languages.
>>
>>173173001

2 is extremely hard to pull off correctly. It has to remain plausible yet far enough removed from the real concept that suspension of disbelief doesn't break, but readability is high. Rule of thumb: Only invent stuff if you can say something interesting about it. If it doesn't matter whether people are eating apples or pumbicklers, let them eat apples.
>The issue I have is I don't want people bitching and whining
Don't try to please everybody. That's impossible. If you can deliver a large amount of fun to a few enthusiastic people, you've succeeded because they'll tell their friends about it.
>>
>>173173610
I argue that there will be quite a bit of unlearning to do if one starts with python. Additionally, I think the lack of advance notification of errors (good linters, compilers, etc.) makes it a much rougher start than even a compiled language.

I'd nominate C# or java as easy starts, C++ as acceptable (despite people memeing about the fact it's so hard), but python, like C, as not very good for this purpose.

I think the main problem will definitely be presenting that information.

If I have a six legged deer-horse hybrid that people ride as commonplace it's not going to be noteworthy in the world, but players will probably want to know what the fuck that thing is since they've never seen it before.

I'll keep fleshing things out and make some decisions soon I hope.
>>
>>173173737
No actually, everything I was doing was almost-standard-but-not-quite. The fact that I kept running into issues in that setting is why I gave up on it. If I was doing some fly shit like complex-shaped portal rendering and scene pathing along with transforming movements, I wouldn't mind having to work around issues.

is that game vaporware or what?
>>
>>173173606
Rotatedev, you mean?

I'm obviously very disappointed that he abandoned our project after I had put so much work into it, but at the time I was happy to work with him because he seemed to be working hard himself.
He had some slightly strange habits, but I'm probably not the most sociable guy myself, so it didn't bother me.

I have no idea what happened with him...

some other indie devs (the game with the weird red cloak guy in desert) did a GDC talk on exactly the same thing

Let's pretend for a second I post one, how would you reply?
>oh, well, I guess I was wrong, Unity can make good graphics without third party assets!
of course not
you'd say either
>lmao that looks good to you? you have shit taste
or, again
>nah, that looks good so I'm sure it uses third party assets because I say so
If there was a way to look for games that don't use third party assets I would do it, but I'm pretty sure there isn't. And this is not just about Unity but any engine. So from the beginning you're asking something impossible and you know it. Good game.

Why bother theorizing about this when you could just post one and see the reaction? It sounds like you're deflecting but that would be jumping to conclusions.
>>
>>173173913
I agree java or C# would probably be the best beginner languages (funny enough my Uni teaches C for beginners), I don't think Python is so bad that the anon would have to switch to another book, assuming he already purchased and started reading the python book.
>>
>>173174020
None of them are good-looking.
>>
>>173173565
Oh, okay, then no, that's a non-issue. UE4 auto-magically does that, it's a permanent part of the engine.

The thing about Dixie is, there are effectively only 3 shades light can be; "normal" (which includes smoothing/blooming for all ultrabright surfaces, which is to say ones in excess of I think 8 or 9 on the lighting scale), "shaded", and "dark". That's what the cel shading effect does

If there's anything to be "gamma corrected" it's adjusting where exactly those band quantizations fall. I tweak it from time to time but I think it looks pretty good as-is. Certainly better than the glowy, high-intensity light of the more recent cel shaded Zelda efforts, at least to my eye.

I think "literally who" is a bit unfair for AHiT, which was Yooka Laylee YEARS before Yooka Laylee was even an idea. I'd be unsurprised to discover other devs have taken similar approaches, though I haven't seen those talks

>>173174057
Vaporware implies it's vanished. It's more, I dunno, drip-ware? They're making consistent but excruciatingly slow progress.
>>
>>173174039
Actually, it occurs to me that if the first few things your players run into are subtly, weirdly different from their real-world equivalents with the same name, you're priming them psychologically to accept "vampires" with tentacles in place of teeth (or whatever). But, again, you shouldn't overwork yourself doing this with every single thing in the world, like giving people weird-shaped hands and calling them cheiropods.
>>
How are you idiots even going to know if a game uses third-party assets or not?

Show me anything free on the Unity store that comes close to the Infinity Blade assets
>>
>>173173081

I could code my own game from scratch without using Unity at all. The point is that as an engine, it fails because the devs care more about Asset store sales than making a quality free-to-use game framework like UE4.

now wait a minute ! i never said that you could make Unity look like UE4 . what i mean was if you look at these tutorials you'll start to realise that you have complete control over how your graphics look in Unity. meaning that not only could you make your game look as good as in UE4, but you could make it look better.
>>
>>173174283

lmao are you serious? UE4 looks 100x better than Unity straight out of the fucking box.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nImGa-F9d1I

this isn't even TEXTURED and it still looks great compared to Unity which makes everything look like a PS2 game.

I don't even know why I'm replying to an obvious troll, though.
>>
>>173174715
I think it's also two guys who are complete amateurs making it. It was one of those early Kickstarter success stories, and it came along at a time when the 3D platformer revival wasn't something anyone was treating as a relevant thing.

I'll grant that it's not the hugest game ever but not knowing it is kind of like not knowing Shovel Knight.
>>
>>173174769
>you have complete control over how your graphics look in Unity
You actually don't. A lot of things like shadows, render orders and PBR method are hard locked and can't be changed. They're going to fix this with their ScriptableRenderLoop thing they've got planned but don't hold your breath that they'll actually release it.
>>
>>173174948

All I'm saying is THIS:

If UE4 is so fucking great - use it.
>>
>>173175349
>Blueprint
If you want some prime salt, go read the Unity's forums reaction to visual scripting. They don't like the fact that Joe Average can now make games.
>>
>>173175650
The democratization of game development is the best thing UE4 really has to offer.

It will (hopefully) do for 3D games what old-school flash did for 2D games, which is to give a lot of people with interesting ideas and zero skills a chance to create something.

Granted it will ratchet the shovelware up through the roof. But still.
>>
>>173175854
I would say at least the shovelware will look good but people fuck that up too.
>>
>>173172169
>>173173081
what I don't get about this argument is that is implies that you can make high fidelity assets and that the engine just don't show it without 3dpart plug-ins.

I don't think most people would argue that UE look better in most cases, except for focus tests like the ones that show that java CAN be faster then c++.

and if you can make assets like that, at a reasonable pace so that you can actually make a game as well, why not just use UE or whatever.
and the hole hurhur, it's not about that is about the principle that it's FALSE advertising. then why don't you sue them, or better yet just download the engine and try it out, since you know it free.

and I know this is just bait, but I can't help shake the feeling that it's some 16year old that feels the need to blame the engine because he sucks that art, lighting, design and all the rest and feels the need to blame the engine.

Developing back-end stuff is underappreciated!
I'm learning the programming languages as I go, I don't have anything cool on the table yet, but I'm having a lot of fun programming the handling of custom connection protocols between Server(PHP) and the Client(love2d lua). The only incompatibility I found so far was regex.
>>
>>173175487
That's the reddit mascot, anon. You should know that tho.
>>
>>173177624
It's about development speed. If you have decent graphics from the get go, you can start working on your game right away. Shader programming can be extremely hard and complex and involve math that even top-tier game devs don't fully grasp. That's because it's not the same crowd that usually make games or work on that kind of thing.

And no, it has nothing to do with assets. It's all about the general rendering code and the shaders.
