Get more allies that want land from your target. Use diplomatic feedback to mark provinces you want, but make sure not to have 100% overlap of vital territories with your allies, otherwise they won't join on promised territory. Promise them land and actually give it to them to get favours, take some for yourself.

Wait for allies of your target being in debt or exhausted, or make them friendly towards you, to disparage them from defending against you.

Attack when you have better tech and/or ideas, policies.

Don't be afraid to go into debt to win a critical war.

Use mercenaries.

Use the terrain to your advantage by using the simple terrain map mode and watching out for defensive terrain and river crossings. Use your own forts to get battles in favourable terrain, stay away from their forts on unfavourable terrain.

Try to peace out their allies quickly.

Watch out for small countries. Each independent country has a base manpower pool of 10k and force limit of ~5, plus they go over the force limit in war. A bundle of them is much more persistent and dangerous than it looks.

Currently the emperor of Byzantium controls Constantinople and the east where as my ruler controls Rome and the west.

Further expansion west is halted by a Khan with 15k cavalry units.
Expansion south was technically successful but came at far too great a cost, like 1600 gold.
Expansion to the east is halted simply because of the distance.

What should my next move be?
If I build up a big enough war chest I can defeat the emperor with mercenaries but I've held off on doing that because I have my hands full already just dealing with the constant faction wars from catholic dukes in Italy and Sicily.

So, I'm working on getting the Land of Eastern Jade achievement in EU4 right now.

Current plan is to start in Pagarruyung, take Exploration Ideas, colonise a bit of Australia, move my capital to the continent after losing a war against Pasai or whoever, then colony island-hop across the Pacific (New Zealand => Hawaii => California => Mexico) and finish by conquering whichever shitty Mexican minor is available. Hopefully, I'll be the origin of Colonialism and cuck Europe out of an institution for a half-century or so.

Recently got EU4, but don't have any expansions.

What are the most important expansions to have, that are basically mandatory for a good game experience? I've heard Common Sense is pretty crucial, and El Dorado's important too.

Can anyone explain how you're meant to use vassals in EU4? I know it's based on a board game and hence a lot of the strategy involved is less based on logic and more game-y/unintuitive.

Turning a country into a vassal gives you less "aggressive expansion" penalty than annexing it outright, and once you cassalise a country, you can peacefully annex it later on (automatically giving you cores on the vassal's cored lands). Furthermore, if you conquer provinces of the vassal's culture/religion, and you don't want to deal with that shit, you can sell them to the vassal instead, and they'll handle the provinces, coring them and such with less difficulty (so you can peacefully annex them later). For instance, a Khmer player could annex, convert and release Pattani (a Malay culture country), then annex and feed them Malayan provinces in Malacca and such. i mean i get it, gameplay purposes so that emperors can vassalize kings, but they could atleast try to give some ethnic/geographic/historical patterns to them.

the fuck is empire of carpathia? the fuck is the wednish empire? why is the empire of italy the same as the kingdom of italy, only a rank higher?

i only realized how bad this is when i played as the king of bulgaria in ~1074 and realized that after getting the kingdom of serbia, my only options were unrealistic expansion to hungary to become the emperor of fucking carpathia, or swearing loyalty to the byzantines and fucking them up through factions, both of which seemed boring.

Yeah. Sometimes that's just how it goes. My trick is to try and get a demense that's equal or greater to vassals, and from there just suppress factions as much as you can.

I didn't think this was possible but I'm running out of vassals.

I've made every duchy I can, transferred vassalage of every count to their dejure lieges, and tried to put as many counties under my person control that I can.

Still though I'm left with over 20 dukes and enough counts to put me at 28/27 vassal limit.

What do I do? Pretty soon I'm going to have 4 new counties to deal with which means another duke putting me up to 29/27. My centralization is as low as it can go.

Post-apocalyptic Westeros. After driving off the White Walkers, I had to fight a war to keep the Reach and Iron Islands contained. Revoked Tyrells from the Reach and put the Florents in. I'm probably going to put the Iron Islands directly under the Crown now.

Casualties from the White Walkers include Loras Tyrell, Mace Tyrell, Rickon Stark, Barristan Selmy, Margaery Tyrell and Tommen's two kids, Sansa's kid, Myrcella "Baratheon", most of House Frey, the last remaining Bolton heir and Osmund Kettleback.

Cersei died from too much drinking and Tommen died from illness after his family died and I tried to shadow baby him for the throne, but he managed to somehow fight it off. Tywin's line of Lannisters is all dead, Kevan's continues but they don't run the West nor Casterly Rock, just Lannisport.

Ruling families are Baratheons of the Crownlands & Stormlands (and iron throne as a whole), Starks of the Trident and North, Florents of the Reach, Estrens of the Westerlands, Arryns of the Vale, Volwarks of the Iron Islands (not for long) and Dondarrions of Dorne (cadet branch of Baratheon under Edric Storm).

First game in which most of it was fighting the Whites. Not sure if I'll continue this since I've crushed most major rebellions and in GoT mod after you win the Iron Throne it pretty much turns into realm management tycoon.

Just keep stacks in each province and quickbind the loot map mode. Any province you loot dry gets a vastly increased autonomy (so don't do it to provinces you're going to take). Looting a country dry before allowing peace is as close as you can get in this game to salting the fields.

Autonomy isn't the only thing that looting does. Think of something good you get from a province like tax, manpower, institution spread, etc - looting it to red makes everything worse. If you don't want a country to recover loot every province systematically.

I've been scraping by for as long as I can but I've reached the damn near absolute limit of my power.
I'm trying to manage the dukes of 5 different kingdoms all while trying desperately to heal the great schism before 900AD.

In blue is what I currently control.
In black is the dejure territory that I need to conquer due to my obsession of clean borders.
In red are the counties I still need to take control of to heal the great schism.

The problem is that if I set out on all these wars I'll have 6 new duchies to manage.
Currently I have 12 counties and 3 duchies I need to get rid of.
If I managed get rid of all of them right now I would have 26/28 vassals, 2 duchies, and no demense outside my capital county.

However, that means at the end of the next 2 holy wars I'll be finished. I will be utterly incapable of expanding further without going over my vassal limit.

How am I to make room for the vassals of the remaining 4 duchies?
Do I have to give up on one of them, refuse to create any more duchy titles, and hold the extra 10 counties by myself?
Do I have to empower the council to improve my vassal limit?
Do I have to start giving multiple duchy titles to the same noble?
Do I have to murder the emperor so that I can inherit the empire and then start giving whole kingdoms out to my vassals?
