This actually happened in more than one game. The most recent one that sticks out in my mind is Rainbow Six Siege, but that's not really new. There's also the Team Fortress 2 route in which a developer sort of accidentally makes a very playable game with a playerbase that's passionate enough to crowdfund their own competitive scene including a recurring intercontinental tournament. The point is that it's always a terrible idea for developers to force a pvp scene in their own game instead of just making a game to make the game. Esports is always a cancer pustule in any game community.

Beta isn't even out. TSW's gameplay isn't stellar but there's guarantee Funcom won't fuck it up further with the release or F2P launch. Current game is still B2P. Also F2P only has one character slot (unless you goy out :^) ) so altoholics beware. TSW always kinda hated those people anyways though. Fuck trying to grind skills and shit for several characters holy fuck.

Still both better games than GW2, though. t b h all it has going for it right now is how pain-free gearing both for PvE and PvP is compared to other MMOs where you play roulette and hope you get the right drop with all the right qualities.
