This isn't technically related to game development but this is the closest board I could find to it so I figure you guys might know something and I didn't want to make a whole thread on /v/ to ask a question.
Is there anywhere on 4chan that's focused on modding games and stuff? Like a modding general or something. If there is, I haven't found it on /vg/.

you shouldn't make games using functional, is a waste of time.

but learning to code non OOP software will make you a better programmer.

so do it.

functional actually forces you to be creative, since you can't use variables and modificable states in your software.
>>
>>172960031
OOP is bad for code reuse (inheritance and encapsulation are inferior to pure composition), bad for performance (overhead of virtual methods and inability to optimize for cache thanks to encapsulation), and it simply doesn't make sense a lot of the time (how do you model abstract concepts like real world objects?).

>>

All of those things are negated by the fact that the most portable game engines are pure OOP. The more platforms you can release on with minimal effort, the more people will be able to buy and play your game.

>>
>>172960453
Kenshi isn't even out yet and likely has practically zero audience. Are there not some developer forums for the game you could post on? Or are you researching modding techniques in general?

The answer you're afraid of getting but you're ultimately going to get is "the thing you want to post doesn't belong anywhere on 4chan other than in a specifically created /v/ thread."

How do I make a video game?
>>
so /agdg/, i need help.
i learned python because i wanted to learn programming and it is easy to pick up. started doing some shit in pygame but it seems like python is not optimal for game developement. it just has so many caveats you need to look out for.

i found about godot which uses GDscript that has lots of similarities with python.
and there is unity, obviously.

where should i go next if i want to make 2d games?
godot could be easy to pick up since i am bretty gud in python and finished 2 sample-games in pygame.
unity is already fully fleshed out but i heard it is shit for 2d games and i would need to learn C#. i have a C# book here and i have lots of free time.

wat do?

Writing programs by composing functions with no side effects. Mutation (as well as any other effect) is still allowed, it just must be explicit in the function signature to make the function pure (which just means that the same input always goes to the same output).

Unity is fine but for 2D there are better options.

GameMaker is my fav but the downside is you need to purchase a lot of modules if you want to export to a lot of platforms.
HaXeFlixel is good too and free but if you're having trouble with something, there isn't a lot of resources online.
MonoGame/SDL2/SFML are great if you want to get better at programming while making a game, but these are libraries and not engines, so you'd need to make a lot things yourself or use other software, for example either make your own level editor or download one online.
>>
>>172962170
"game design" is just logic.
play your game, is it fun ? Does it stay fun long ? Then it's well designed.

Inheritance is worse than composition. Composition is still bad if you have encapsulation because you have to write boilerplate to "bubble up" the methods of the contained classes to the containing class (inheritance exists to prevent this, but it also makes your code extremely resistant to change). Without encapsulation or inheritance you don't have OOP.

They intentionally leave out features and leave bugs unfixed so that people will have to purchase those features or bugfixes from the Unity store.
The engine just runs poorly overall.

ok, so I was listening to the clockwork game design podcast and I tried to imagine a new fighting game, since I've always wanted to make one.
So, following his advice I need a core mechanic and build on top.
I want to make this fighting game for a subculture of fighting games that is the combo makers, basically making a game to showcase combo skills.
That would be the core goal, but if we follow this route then I'll have to drop out all the other conventions.
I guess one way to do it could be that the players exchange offensive and defensive positions, per each match.
Basically in one match one player has the offensive positions and can make any combo he wants meanwhile his oponent can't attack but has a lot of defensive options.
Or make the game about Offensive state, neutral state and defensive state, and you have a certain move to try to change from neutral to offensive or defensive to neutral.
Any opinions on this?

>tfw slowly keithpilling agdg

If you look even deeper into this philosophy you might drop the second player altogether and form combos in a purely abstract singleplayer game.

Staying in a fighting game context, however, it seems like you're choosing your next combo input partially based on which defensive option the second player is using at the time. So part of the mechanic is predicting what your opponent is doing. You might also want to alternate who is the attacker DURING a round instead of between rounds. Whenever a combo breaks the roles switch.

For example 15 chess pieces there is no better solution than OOP for board games
>>
>>172965752
Yeah I linked that.
I don't think there's anything wrong with trying out the mechanic in a fighting game context. Keith has a has strong binary opinions, he's basically staked out an ideological outpost on game design. He's either going to be very right or very wrong.

Singleplayer is PRACTICALLY easier since you don't have to have a community to test it. The DESIGN will be harder because you don't have an opponent to fight against so the system has to be interesting on its own.

OK, so I fixed my diagonal movement since before it was going too fast as it always does with simple movement programming

>>
>>172966232
You should be looking at how your platform game works, what its current or intended base mechanics are and then figuring out how to implement puzzles that fit into those mechanics. Telling you to go and play Lost Vikings, Abe's Odyssey, Blob & His Blob or Umihara Kawase won't help you at all if your game doesn't play like they do or you don't notice that they all use pretty much the same puzzles, just implemented to work with their game mechanics.
>>
>>172967029
People have mentioned the concept before but I don't see how a 2D DMC would be fun. I don't even see the point.
>>
>>172966801
It shouldn't feel slow. Movement in any direction should be exactly the same if you're doing it right.

But also what kind of game is it? For some games it doesn't matter, for other games it does matter.

T.b.h. I don't see the problem with leaving diagonal movement in place. If it doesn't even unbalance the game, who cares? Also, and this is a general principal of art, details and quirks and idiosyncrasies give a game character. Pure and consistent interaction is a feature for software and tools, not for art.

That said some autists will complain at you even at release because you "forgot" to do this.

driving on ice definitely is boring. I am going to make a more realistic car handling in the near future. Right now after doing research on what people actually like to play, it all points to arcade racing, not simulation. In the arcadey physics im making now, its not really ice as well. Grip on the road is very tight, its just that car has a lot of torque that makes its wheel slip if you press on gas hard, other than that it drives straight as a car supposed to. But thanks for your input, its good to know theres more people out there who are into actual proper car games

desu I don't really know what it is atm, the feature creep is real so I'm constantly changing the design to keep the scope reasonable, and some of the game mechanics that I'm testing aren't really as fun/interesting as I thought they would be.

Since always. It's an inherent problem with the technique unless your voxelized data is of an insanely high resolution, something that you won't have the memory or the bandwidth to achieve in realtime rendering. You can try to alleviate the issue at a lower voxel res with spherical harmonics but your performance is going to be shit.

Voxel GI is a dead end technique with most engines researching pathtracing solutions instead.

it is definitely not, music theory is easy as shit, it just has an exponential curve. so its easy to learn it "pretty good" but its damn difficult once you get to higher level concepts

it won't automatically give you the creativity to create masterpieces, but with basic music theory training (i'm talking like 2 months at most of study) you can pump out good enough sounding western music to use in your game

learn the following:
>scales, chords, intervals
>circle of fifths
>chord progressions
>4 voice harmony
>2-3 rythms, polyrythms
>arpeggios

try to copy another artists song until you've learned and understood.

music isn't as complex, is like writing in a new language, at first is hard, but you'll become better.

try to understand a new song you hear it using music theory.

>And no, you wouldn't become good enough to compose anything in 2 months starting from nothing.
yes you would, excluding whatever time it takes to learn an instrument to record it.

add another 2 months of learning audio software and you can create your game's soundtrack by yourself.

as someone who has studied music theory for 4 year, I have to say 99% of video game soundtracks are extremely simplistic and rarely stray outside the bounds of basic western music theory. creating passive music for your game is easy as throwing some chords together in the right order, and noodling on top of them with your scale or mode. it takes slightly more effort to make a good melody, but its still trivial and the catchiness you'll often arrive at through sheer luck.

I agree. I'm literally salivating at the train wreck to come.

Boku had potential, it's a damn shame. He took too much after gogem and rotate.

Gogem for instance doesn't care that everyone knows he's a pedophile with gigantic personality disorders and autism, because he will never be a success and knows it. He happily hamstrings himself to make excuses for his failures being the result of le too much 4chan le edge. But he's an old fucking man. Boku was young and had his whole life ahead of him, that's what makes it tragic.

It will be extremely entertaining to watch 4chan undo yet another dev who had potential. And it will happen by politically correct outrage mongering by the very people who claim to hate SJWs. Idealogies mean nothing in light of "this kid said annoying things to me in the discord".

Literally no remorse for chat fagging face posting namefags. One after the other they try to rise out of here and crash and burn and honestly it's what they deserve. I wonder who will be next after Boku?

Metroid prime but better. Tons of exploring, tight gunplay and platforming, unlockable weapons and puzzles. I figure if I can capture the essence of that game, plus add on some actual challenge and a real story with dimension, it'd be fun as hell to play. At least for me.

Like I said, obviously small steps. Start with platforming, get it down pat. Add some gunplay, refine, add movement (strafing, verticality) to combat, refine, etc etc. This is the game I wanna play.
>>
>>172977430

It has a reasonably clean and stable interface that is mostly predictable as well as consistent. The internals for the top-level components (such as Character, Pawn, CharacterMovementController, etc.) are easy to read, although not well documented, and written in a style that does not rely on unexplained complex multi-stage macro+pointer magic scaffolding. Macros are designed to clean up syntactic burden to great effects.

However, several isolated parts of the system do not behave as advertised and contain some pretty serious bugs (for some value of 'serious'). in particular, the editor is borderline unusable and the engine as a whole does not work on some classes of hardware due to massive artifacting (such as fermi-generation nvidia cards). The macros themselves also tend to be quite complex and hard to understand.

So I still can't dev as usual as before because of things outside my control. I only managed to add respawning and invulnerabilities so far.

My question is what should I do next?

Should I add sound effects and hud? (They will be just rips with their exact placement already ready so I don't think it's a priority.) Or should I add more enemies and start designing levels?

Also about design. How do I go about adding a machinegun to this? It feels like it'd be way too overpowered considering just the handgun is sufficient for everything. Should I gimp the handgun to have less damage or reduce the firerate of the machinegun so it's more balanced? The rest of the enemies are just gonna be the regular guys in Double Dragon, which imo should be killed in 1-shot to be comparable to the soldiers in metal slug, so I don't know about increasing their health.

I don't think it'd really feel like metal slug if I don't add a machine gun and would be kinda boring without any powerups.

It feels like you only completed US middleschool history.

There had been tons of religions in central and eastern asia without an afterlife punishment/reward belief that got around just fine. Back then religion was essentially much like science today, trying to make sense of the anomalies around them. They weren't preaching every day to get afterlife points.

Religion paid no dues to the advancement of civilization other than being an inspiration for art, which really could've been anything. The only benefit it had was motivating soldiers and population control during wars, so it was invented and distributed by tribes with strong military power. That is why the main religions today are all about the poor and uneducated (prime material for foot soldiers) defeating a superior enemy by banding together and the "good" ones who do their daily duties getting rewarded later on.

If you're believing in religion today you're an idiot and deserve all the scamming you get.

That doesn't matter. People will still justify killing and stealing for "survival" when it is really for profit and greed and corruption. Not everything changes with progress. Humanity has held onto traditions and religions throughout countless revolutions and technological advances. It has an obvious need and is part of the arts and humanities.

If you're just another mass produced drone you won't understand or care. All you need to be taught is that "____ is bad and the reason everything is bad" and that's as far as your philosophical frame will ever go.

+Placeholders created for a number of enemy states.
+Many bugs quashed. Animation system now fully liberated from the tyranny of image_speed. Can now work on implementing things like hitstun!
-Next on the list: making the enemy actually be able to get up after being KO'd, give it logic, and to make the player stand idle and wait for the animations to play out. Then I get to work out doing it all again for when the player's KO'd.
-Still waiting on lots of art to work on some enemy states. Still gotta clean up a lotta art too...
-Gotta port over the rest of the player movekit to new animation system. No less than 8 states that I have to re-time and re-hitbox.

I'm not actually sure 100% how I want to do the crosshair yet, so I just slapped Unity's placeholder knob on there. I wanted to do RE4-esque aiming where it's based on your actual player's aim rather than center-of-screen, but laser sights would be out of place in this game and it'd be pretty frustrating to try and guess the aim without it. Sprite-mario-running-animation.gif

hey /agdg/, are you aware of the "ambidextrous sprite" issue in 2D games? It's such a small issue, but it's something that's bugging me.
Let's say I have a 2D character holding an object, but I also want to make a transition animation between the running left->running right animations (which are the same animations, just flipped), for when the player decides to suddenly change direction.
(Or a changing idle direction animation works too. Really any change of direction with a transition animation between it.)

Normally I'd just animate 1-2 frames of the body/arms/legs turning the other direction and match it up with a flipped running animation.
But since my character is holding an object, the arms don't make sense anymore, because once the running animation is flipped, the right arm becomes the left arm, and the left arm becomes the right arm.
You can't animate that in a way that makes sense, leaving me to think that it's very difficult to make transition animations that look good if you're just flipping sprites. Are you supposed to just kinda wing it, even if it doesn't look correct?

Is there a solution to this, other than the absurd "draw for both directions"?

This. It's the reason Bokudev is nuking himself with political shitposting on twitter. He's making a Disney game but he can't stand it because he's a little edgelord faggot and can't express himself politically through a cartoon bunny.

Somehow the solution (in his mind) is to combine his politically divisive outlet with his gamedev. Because memes.

+Successfully created an aimoffset so your upper torso moves but your legs stay still

-While the way I set up the custom rig keeps the hands on the weapon in Blender, it doesn't keep them on the gun in UE4, causing left, right and up to have misplaced positions. Seems instead of using Track to and 2 bones that are children of the weapon for the hands, I need to just parent the gun to the player's right hand for now.

Either don't be an autist, be a hyper autist and animate for both directions, or include an animation where the character (for no apparent reason) changes hands with whatever he's holding whenever he changes direction.

Those are your only options unless you have the object float alongside him rather than being held by him.

More powerful weapons can just have a limited number of bullets, like many old arcade games had. So they can't just be used forever. Then when it runs out switch back to the pistol.
I guess adding more enemies would be useful to start designing levels.

That isn't hard to balance at all. Just add them and if they feel like they don't last long enough, increase the ammo a bit, if they last too long, decrease it a bit. It just takes a bit of playing with to get it to feel right. Each weapon can have its own ammo as well, so something like a bazooka would only have a few shots, where a machine gun would last a while longer.

A couple of things accomplished today:

First, enemies finally have a proper "death" effect (separate from their "destroyed" effect) which lets you know when their HP has reached zero; this makes it much clearer when it's acceptable to stop comboing them, which makes fights feel much faster overall.

Second, enemies can now actually use ranged attacks; if their equipped weapon is of a Gun class, they have a separate attack animation (which is triggered automatically if the player cannot be reached by running, either due to no viable paths or just being in midair, and with a weighted randomness otherwise which prefers melee).

What's kind of cool about this is that the enemy actually uses the muzzle flash and projectile class that the weapon specifies for Dixie, so the player can sort of see how it will work when they collect it... though the projectile speed is capped at 8,000m/s for balance reasons, whereas your own projectiles can be much higher. For example, the weapon in the webm, Dixie's basic handguns, fires a projectile that travels more than 10x that speed.

Aiming is auto-magic (the bullet always travels directly toward Dixie), but with a randomized offset. This is why the reduced speed is so important; without it, all of the enemies are eagle-eyed snipers who can destroy Dixie in an instant because they never miss. The speed cap helps ensure you have a window to dodge incoming shots, or to simply move aside if you're far enough away.

Still to do is adding a perfect dodge window "frame" to bullets so that you can get Zen by dodging them, and also ensuring that blocking inhibits enemy projectiles.

>>
>>172987554
i dont know wtf you're talking about
>>
>>172988042
Well, in a sense, it's EXTREMELY forgiving, since bullet spread is zero. Shots will always land exactly where you point them. The "randomization" is due to kickback on the camera itself which you can fight with good mouse control.

Plus, the enemies (as you can see) are pretty large targets, with these absolute tiniest models already being as big as your character.

On the other hand, there is zero aim assist of any kind. Remember, this is a PC game. It's being tested with KB/M and a Steam Controller.

Analogue look is enabled but there won't be any magnet snapping when you iron sights. Sorry.

That's what makes him entertaining. He never drops character because there is no character. He really is this much of a doucher. If you could find success solely on being hated in gamedev he would have been the next Phil Fish ages ago.

Unfortunately Phil Fish actually made a real playable game and not a slideshow button simulator so his outrageous behavior gathered a bit more marketing effect than Gogem's ceaseless wailing on agdg with "ironic" shitposting and his babbling to himself on twitter.

sounds like steam direct won't cost $5000, it'll be $100, and your game will just be added to a hidden/unpromoted pile on steam and the "Steam Explorers" program of people will buy your game and vote on it to make it visible and rise to the top. (Steam Explorers will have weekly refunds to persuade them to buy and test the piece of crap)

they want to give all bad games a chance but keep them invisible if they're bad.

If you enjoy more than the sixish standout ART games made in RPGmaker then you've got shit taste.
>>
>>172997445
that doesn't sound too bad desu, as long as anybody can become a steam explorer
>>
>>172990237
If i could just like make game I'd be all over that
>>
>>172997846
>as long as anybody can become a steam explorer
Don't count on it.
>>
>>172997736
not enough info to go on and they just said on the "low end" of the spectrum so it could be $200.

from what I've gathered the default state of a game on steam will be unpromoted and invisible. steam explorers (users who opt-in to the service) will make your game promoted higher on the store.

>And will this mean it's harder to become visible on Steam?
Yes. Unless you're part of the modern social justice journalist crowd, you won't get shit for exposure on Steam anymore.

Oh but it's so much more than that. It wasn't just the PewDiePie game jam game known as Social Interaction Trainer that failed to even get an honorable mention which he has blessed us with. He also entered lewd jam and blew us away.

Gogem hates game jams unless it's by PewDiePie or a jam like Lewd Jam which got tons of attention. Then he doesn't fuck around. He makes masterpieces.

Don't blink or you might miss it!

that is literally what itch is right now
>>

If gogem can draw faces like that what the fuck is he doing with the loli jam?

>tfw realize Gogem is literally a con artist and traces shit whenever he needs to draw a real face

That sounds more like Egyptian values.
>>
>>172998183
is this a joke?
>>
>>172998443
I have tried to get him to admit it was a joke but he won't. Even having known gogem for this long his level of delusion still surprises me.

I can't say if it's a joke but it is a real game you can play if you hate yourself
Sorry, """"""game""""""" rather

Itch would be decent if people bothered to rate games, but even the top tier "this is a good game by any vendor's standards" games get one or two upboats at most, making it impossible to sift through all the rest of the shit that gets uploaded there.
>>
gogem is an acronym for Google Odium Generation Enragement Matrix

It is an AI designed to develop a personality that is so caustic and unlikeable that its mere presence will aggravate the shit out of any living human being, as well as some species of housepets
>>
>>172998183
I am excited to see what he's going to do for loli jam after all his talk. He did the same thing with lewd jam but he's talking an even bigger game this time and posting horrible artwork and ignoring everyone's feedback. I can't wait.

Itch is definitely operating on a devs first mindset right now. You can go into any game (even one that you haven't purchased) and rate it. You can comment on a game's page, but this is NOT a review. You can attach words to a game's rating, but as far as I can tell, this only shows up to the developer. The game's page itself doesn't show the rating. Besides all this they have several comment systems in various parts of the site that aren't integrated.

Itch's intended usage is really a store page that you direct traffic to from outside, so I understand why they won't force devs to add the rating info to the page.
