Well I think what I want to do is to give the player a choice of a base starting class. The player then has the option to promote to an advanced class during character creation but at the risk of receiving a negative trait.

For example, a squire could promote to a knight at the start but he receives the maimed trait, presumably from fighting in a battle.

Announcing RPG MAKER MV 1IJ

1IJ is abbreviated for One-Eyed Jack, but since it's visual similar to 1リ, they're pronouncing it one-ri or "ornery"

In bizarre Japanese fashion, it continues the card naming scheme that started with VX "ACE"
This new edition fills in the gaps of the previous edition's RTP, extending the resource library with more Side-View content (hence the name "One-Eye Jack")

How do you feel about some party members having considerably simpler stories than others?

Say, there is a party of four. Three of the characters have family members, arch enemies, childhood flashbacks that explain their personalities, character arcs, origins that relate to the unique aspects of the setting, while the other character is just... there.
>>
>>172811240
Is there a reason why he has a much simpler story?
>>
>>172811240
Depends on the game. If you have a lot of characters it's expected that the main characters will take center stage while other characters won't be as fleshed out.

And if those characters with extensive backstories are ham-handed and annoying mary sues then a lot of the time I find my favorite characters is "random guy who doesn't say anything, and therefore doesn't say anything cringey".

Like in pretty much every JRPG ever.

>>
>>172811240
simpler stories, sure, but do they interact a lot with the story? Do they care about the events that happen, or are they just fleshbag#4 used to fill out combat roles?

A character who spends more time interacting within the story is more interesting than someone who spent all that time doing it outside the story.

I decided to make an FFL-style overworld sprite since I have zero experience in doing spritework. How bad did I fuck up and how rusty should my seppuku blade be?

Character is meant to be wearing a robe and a cape.
>>
>>172850842
Loot. Money come from loot.
Equipments give nice boost for battle.

I also want to implement cooking to permanently increase stats.
But only for food your character haven't eaten.

>>172851394
Yeah, enemy drop loot for item crafting and cooking for permanent stat boost >>172851162

Monsters has high drop rate so you don't need to grind that much as well.
Some item are "steal only" as well.

so it is entirely combat and grinding focused? Running away doesn't benefit you at all and you have to grind to get the equipment needed to beat the bosses.
>>
>>172852107
If the Iron Sword can only be equipped by one person, and the materials are only dropped by commonly-found Big-Dicked Orcs, it doesn't matter if you have one or one thousand iron swords, you can't equip all of them.

I'm not trying to be an asshole, but someone will probably say something similar when playing your game. Of course I have no context of the story, the setting, the characters, or anything else.

Also relax. If you can't handle any type of criticism, don't release your game because there will always be people who will say bad things about your game. Even the best games have critics. So calm your tits, man. Or do I have to limit my free speech to save the ever important feels?
>>
>>172854601
It's fine. I appreciate the criticism.
Now that think about it. It force player to grind.
Maybe I'll take this >>172854330 suggestion instead.
>>
>>172854601
You can criticize without strawmanning and making up scenarios that might not even happen you know.
>>
>>172850203
>>172851162
Level locking is fine, level grinding is what makes RPGs so monotonous and/or trivial (yeah, we know "don't grind then :^)").

But with what you described you might as well remove levels altogether and have equipment/food be the main source of progression. Just have bosses drop an item that'll increase your stats by enough to give you a 'jump' in power.

No sense having levels if EXP doesn't exist.
>>
>>172854997
>oh no he said something negative about a scenario that might not be true
What's the problem here? If it's not true, the OP can disregard the post. If it is true, or has the possibility of being true, the OP can take it into consideration in order to improve his game.
>>
>>172854847
Well I'm glad you saw what I was getting at. I was only pushing so hard since you said you didn't want the grind but it seemed like it would be like that through the mechanics. I'm not against crafting or anything like that, just trying to help.
>>
>>172855456
I think what he was trying to describe was anti-grind, though.

If fighting mobs only gives you materials for a certain weapon, once you get that weapon fighting them won't benefit you anymore. In a normal RPG you can keep grinding indefinitely for EXP until you can just brute force the next boss.
>>
How to make poison state that damage 20% HP / turn on normal enemies and 4% HP/ turn on boss?

Make Poison skills inflict 2 states at once. Say, "Mook Poison" and "Boss Poison".

Make Mook Poison deal 16% per turn, and Boss Poison deal 4% per turn. Make bosses immune to Mook Poison.

so if I am ESL with a B2, what should I do:
>start writing your game in your native language, find a translator later
>make a game with minimal text
>just try your best in english, and hope it will be okay
>>
>>172876815
Pretty sure I've played games where this happens, before. Roguelikes, mostly.
>>
>>172877279
depends on the tone of the game. if it's fairly serious you'll want someone to proofread it.

if not, just doing your best is fine. for all its bullshit, english is actually a very forgiving language, you can fuck up a LOT and still get across the gist of what you're trying to say
>>
>>172876815

It's a really cool idea, but what happens after it? Does it make the world react in some ways to the changed character? Some NPC's would probably be confused when they saw a girl, who was a guy a few moments before.

>>172877279

I'd do option 3. Hiring a translator is costly and it will take some time, before you will be able to release the game in english. Making a game with minimal text is a good idea, if you will be able to do it right. Creating a story without many words is a very hard task and even a little slip-up can lead to player's confusion(I had it a few times while playing Hyper Light Drifter and it's a game that do the story without words pretty well).

I think the option 3 would be the best, because even if you make mistakes - the beta-testers or players will likely find them for you and you will be able to correct them fast. Much more fast than translating the whole game from your native language to english, which is a hard task in itself and takes a lot of time.

It's an endless grind because you can always improve and you'll probably (unless you're a shit artist with a vanity complex) never be satisfied with your art because you know you could technically do better. And the aforementioned improvement is a slow, slow process that happens over the course of years. Even if you take a bunch of art courses or do tutorials, drawing is like 10% knowledge and 90% practice.

If you expect to pick up a tablet and instantly be half-decent that's just not realistic.

Absolutely. Eventually you get to the point where what you make in an hour is better than what the old you could make in a week. The trick is to always work on something you actually want to exist. If you know your way around Gimp, It's a very good program for anything you need. I like Gimp, Just need to open the View tab and turn on Grid View and then open the Image tab and configure the grid to 1x1 pixel and you'll have your pixel art grid. Set the lines to a light grey and you're good to go.

In the Image tab you can also set the mode of the image to indexed so you can limit which colors the image is allowed to use

It's just because of the switch to Javascript from Ruby. Better programming language in terms of writing and making scripts but also makes things run like turds in water. I've never played a game that involved Javascript that wasn't a pile of unoptimized shit. It's still a very good programming language that most people learn as the default in college.

Gimmicks, Mechanics, Limitations.

They need to all be situational, one comp should have an easier time vs boss A but struggle vs boss B, and vise versa with other comps.

Its not easy but its possible. You could look at a relatively balanced RPG like SD3, every character brings something unique to the table and while a few sub-classes are shit, the only one who was truly busted was Kevin, thanks to one small oversight on his werewolf form who can literally solo the game.

What I am saying is try to give everyone a niche and make sure there is more to the game then "damage and heal".

It can possibly be done with states, All you need to find is a plugin that lets you apply states at certain health % which shouldn't be hard. I would look for you but i don't own VX Ace so I'd just be giving you a bunch of state related plugins i don't know anything about.

>Create a common event for each % health missing you want
>Have the events change your actor portrait
>Apply the common events to different States traits
>Use a plugin to trigger those states at the required HP%
>The state being activated will run your common event and change your actor portrait

In theory i believe that should work but i haven't tried it so it's possible there's issues with it. I'm going off my experience with MV here.

Would you prefer this leveling system?

https://youtu.be/w8XJ7Y3aZk0

You are taken to a different map depending on which character you pick. The map typically will represent the growth of the character as you progress. For example: Cleo starts off in the Farm House (comfortable yet boring ) and eventually ends up in a Vet Clinic (facing her fears).

You go around the map and buy upgrades, different paths are unlocked. You can go backwards so you aren't locked into a single lane. Every time you exit, your position is saved so you don't have to backtrack/waste time.

The other idea is basically a "Talent Tree". Kinda cute graphics but nothing amazing. This is far less unique but is more user-friendly perhaps.

What would you prefer to play?

Someone please help me understand. How can people honestly have the will power and motivation to make art when they're sad? I don't get it.

All I feel is an unbearable pain in my chest and complete apathy for everything around me. I don't have a desire to get out my sadness into art or music or games. I just want to lay in my bed and stare at the ceiling. And maybe die, idk. I'm too cowardly to kill my self.

My point is, how do people do it? How do they turn sadness into art? Am I just broken? Can I not function like a normal person for some reason?
>>

Back when I was suffering from depression, I forced myself to work on making things because focusing entirely on it distracted me from the pain.

here's what it is, faggot.

The problem is you. Yeah it sucks to hear it, but it's true. It's not your friend's, or your parent's or strangers' you don't know on the internet job to validate your existence and praise you until you think your live is worth living. It's just not. Even if you had new bitches on your dick every day, $20 million in the bank, and sold out concerts every other night, you'd still feel like shit.

Everything is in your head and you can't find satisfaction in anything because... well I don't fucking know. The first step towards fixing your head is to start appreciating WHAT YOU HAVE. Yeah you can fight me on this by saying "Well, Anon, I can't fucking write ANY music anymore, waaaaaaaaah". To which I'll say, "Oh man, that sucks. Kinda like it sucks that there are people who fucking kill each other so that they can eat out of the dumpster in a 3rd world shit-hole. And if they can't, they'll starve to death while their internal organs fail. It's sure sucks that can sit on your computer for hours upon hours in your comfy shelter while some guy has to sleep on concrete streets for probably years because nobody will ever give him anything more than $5 or a pair of socks or their uneaten leftovers from McDonald's. Yup. You have it bad."

I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but finding appreciation in what you have is the most humbling, grounding think you can ever experience. It forces you to acknowledge that people have it worse than you and that your life IS NOT that bad. Like I wash dishes for a living and my hands get cuts, turn red, get painfully dry, and I usually never get a break to sit down or eat for hours upon hours. YET I still thank God(because I'm spiritual) for the opportunity to wash stupid ass dishes. I'm happy that I can support myself because there are millions of people who wish and wish to get a job so they can have money. I've known some of those people, man. They don't even want to be multi-millionaires or have fancy cars and shit. They just don't want to be so fucking poor that they can't afford food or pay their bills to even have a life that isn't miserable.

All I'm saying, even if you're atheist or whatever, just thank God or the Universe or whatever the RNG for this reality is, for the blessings that you have. Be thankful for the fact that you have the knowledge of music, the able body to create it, the access to a computer, the internet, have time to bullshit and play around, have a place to live and food to eat. It sounds like petty shit but there are billions of people that don't have even one of those things I just mentioned.

I think you're missing the point that he/she doesn't feel. Sounds like anhedonia to me.

And you sound like a judgmental christian that want to believe the important things in their life have universal value. "So blessed" and "God will provide" -- it must be hard to accept that there are people who are in-control of their life but don't care. They're telling you it's all meaningless, happyness is meaningless, but you can't accept that because it all you're living for. And deep inside there's a selfish and materialistic shadow saying
"I can feel good about myself knowing someone has it worst than me."
>>
>>173020048
Sure you have some light hearted scenes but yes, it's more P3 than P4.
P3 was all about death and people dying while P4 was a scooby do mystery and Adachi doing nothing wrong.
P5 seems to be about dark desires and liberating yourself by breaking the chains which hold you down (?). I can say more after I finished it.
>>
>>173020887

Actually I'm trying to give this person advice on something they can concretely try to do. Unlike you, you fucking armchair psychologist.

>anhedonia
I'm sure that really makes them feel better about their situation.
>lel you can't feel pleasure
>don't worry, just take pillz and you'll be gucci my man

Fuck that. I don't understand why feeling gratitude and appreciation is such a triggering suggestion. Just because I said God you get all upset? In that second paragraph I say that no matter what you believe you should still be able to feel happy for that fact that you have knowledge and get to do the things you do. I'm not SJW about it and making you acknowledge your "privilege". Quite the opposite actually, because that makes you feel guilty and ashamed.

Feeling gratitude is a pathway to feeling happiness. Even taking spirituality out of it, people feel gratitude for millions of things. It's about changing the core foundation of seeing life and your situation. If you feel grateful for the littlest, insignificant things then don't you think the big things, even if seemingly impossible or by random chance, have a greater impact?

Like think about any time that something has happened that left you feeling grateful. An act of kindness that was unexpected is so uplifting. It actually raises you out of the pain, worry, and numbness that clouded you before. Trust me, if you can find a way to create that feeling in your daily life, life radically changes.

I mentioned my job, saying it's not exactly the best but I still appreciate it because I was unemployed for a long time and it was making me worry and feel so bad about myself, not to mention being broke. But when that interview came and I got the job you bet your ass I thanked God everyday since then that I can wash dishes. They don't have to be religious about it, that's just my personal expression. Gratefulness is not bound by religion.
>>
>>173022359
I wasn't trying to make them feel better.
I'm trying to make you feel terrible. Here you are preaching happiness is what makes life worth living. And you can't grasp at the concept that it might be physically impossible. You think you're dishing out soul food, but you're just rubbing their face in a pile of shit that's bound to push them over the edge faster.
>>
Sure is RPG Maker in here.
>>
>>173024642
>I wasn't trying to make them feel better.

I feel bad for you, actually. I guess if arguing with me makes you feel better, go ahead.

>You think you're dishing out soul food, but you're just rubbing their face in a pile of shit that's bound to push them over the edge faster.

Well they came here for some reason didn't they? First it was asking about how to channel their bad situation and feelings into art, which they just couldn't do anymore. So my suggestion was not to use art, instead use an entirely different means: gratitude and appreciation. I have a feeling that they don't want to create art for the sake of art. They wan't to try to be a happier person.

This is an RPG Maker general, but for fucks sake, man, obviously the guy is reaching out for help. The least you could do is try to help instead of attempting to make me feel some kind of way.

>>173060746
He just graduated from Magic School with above average scores.
As a noble, he will inherit his father's land and manage them.
Or at least that's the plan until "something happens".

I haven't decided what happens to him yet but basically he will be stripped of his nobility and become a farmer.

At first he do everything half-assed because "why the fuck I become a farmer" but then realized no one help him anymore other than his personal bodyguard/childhood friend and even then she is fed up with his lazy ass and start being strict on him.

Throughout the first part of the game, he realized he is a burden for everyone.
He start changing himself and mend his relationship with the villagers around.
Also realized he could get better score in the magic school if he actually tries.
He is intelligent, just lazy as hell.

Yeah, it's Rune Factory clone.
The gameplay consist of farming and fighting monster.

The MC can have harem.
He is also playful and flirty.

I think I already share this on this general back then but the MC doesn't have backstory.

So, the following bit of script is crashing my game:

$bs_tileid = $game_map.data[$bs_scanx, $bs_scany, 2].to_s
if $bs_tileid >= 256
$bs_filename = "scene_"+$bs_tileid+"n_"+$bs_pictype+".png"
else
$bs_filename = "scene_"+$bs_tileid+"_"+$bs_pictype+".png"
end

The error it gives me reads:

comparison of String with 256 failed

So to my understanding, it can't compare the tile ID with 256 because it won't register it as an integer. I tried replacing .to_s with .to_i, but that doesn't do anything either. Any idea how I can have the tile ID (which is apparently a Fixnum?) be interpreted as an integer?

I'm not going to lie, my sexual fantasies lead to the best plot related ideas and scenarios. Unfortunately there are still traces of them even if I've tried to cover it up. But you'd need refined taste to even pick up on it, everyone else is just going to see it as "he's appeasing the sjw".

Given enough time and development (about three years of world building and altering) it actually ended up the best setting ever. All that's left is to make it happen while I work the kinks out of the next one.

Nailed it. Drakengard 1's OST perfectly captures this descent into violent madness. I don't know another way of describing it. I listened to it on loop for 18+ hours, and there's just something to it that goes beyond noises and starts to turn thoughts and emotion.

Not saying the music will make you a psychopath or something, but it successfully accomplishes an emotional response. Beyond doubt, it is a masterpiece. And beyond doubt, it is an ugly, unenjoyable thing to listen to.

I'm not really sure yet. I thought it was because the projectile sprites were all nulls instead of 0's, which would immediately result in all possible projectile sprites instantly becoming the first spell to be cast. Just a suggestion, but take directionality into account.

Let θ = the direction in radians

For each update
Δx = cos(θ)
Δy = sin(θ)

So the movement is basically the hypotenuse of a right triangle with other sides length cos(θ) and sin(θ). cos^2(θ) + sin^2(θ) = 1 for all real θ.

That way you're always moving at a total speed of 1, instead of double speed when moving diagonally.

So for Cos

>>
>>173139312
Could you make me something simple and slow?

I'm thinking something along the lines of this https://youtu.be/QQYtmRAfjOo

It doesn't have to be long, I just need it long enough to repeat. I'm going to use it when characters rob a bank and since the game has no fighting, Game is just about collecting stuff for a heist and then using that stuff correctly to rob the bank without getting caught.

I was just going to use the phoenix wright tune but i think an original song might be nicer.
>>
>>173139080
>>173139673
I have a few light effects with subtle gradients so I should probably keep the non pixel stuff for only those things. Busts are a good idea. Maybe I can do a two-fer and crop the faces out from them.
>>
>>173140951

Quantim computers will be the death of the common password. Searching hundreds of thousands of password combinations within seconds. Hackers with steal your password fairly easily.

Load times for everything would be none existent including RPG Maker
>>
>>173141927
simple and slow. robbing bank theme, no fighting.
i take it you want something that sounds tense but also allows some room for thought.
is this robbing part of the game or is it a cutscene?

also if you could answer this bit for me
>* type (chiptune, emulating an old console sound like genesis/snes, real instruments)

sorry if it sounds like im needy but when people request music they often forget that the musician isn't in their head, so we need as much info as possible to get it right the first time.
>>
>>173143473

Oh sorry, It's in the game not in a cutscene. I don't really mind the type of music, Maybe emulating a console for this type of slow tense bank heist music would work best. You got it right though slow and tense and allows some room for thought.

It's going to be used multiple times in the game.

>>
>>173147993
I'm not sure, Since it's a small project i don't want to get in over my head. Since the game is focused on bank heist i figured that should be the focus. Maybe a hideout theme less tense than the heist theme and a title theme maybe? They could all be variations of the same song with a few notes changed, I'm not too worried about other music though. I'd just stick to the one song and be happy.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>173156824

Linux and gaming don't go together. MV running better is cool but it's at the cost of lots of other things running like shit such as for example Flash. Youtube is shit because Flash on Linux is shit. There was hope when they tried changing to HTML5 but it didn't stick. This is just 1 thing out of many that sucks on Linux systems. I'll take compatibility over quality and stick with Windows 7.
>>
>>173158763
>lots of other things running like shit
>flash
>youtube

What are you even talking about? YT runs perfectly on my system. If anything, porn sites don't work well because of flash, but you shouldn't be on those anyways.

Plus when you use the command line and get used to it, you can't go back to windows. Things that require programs and GUI's on windows are included libraries and command lines in Linux.

I'm honestly never satisfied with anything I make, but I asked for feedback on something I was unsure of because presumably that's what this thread is for, and not just posting something I'm happy with and saying "It's good I like it, if I do say so myself!". But evidently I was too self-deprecating.

I'm sorry if I appeared to be humble-bragging or something like that. At any rate, goofy, half-assed MSpaint style is precisely what I was aiming for because I thought a game that looked like it was drawn by a kid would be cute, and it's miles easier than trying to do actual art with proper shading and linework.

Anyways, it's fun making games together so no bully pls

If you read the post you're replying to, I point out the term "MSPaint graphics" is being used to describe both the style and the quality of the art. He referred to it in a previous post as "half-assed", in previous threads he's done the same thing. Referring to them as MSpaint graphics in the first place is clearly self-degrading, you don't intentionally do that unless you're trying to bring attention to how sloppily they look. Regardless of how the graphics were made, they're clearly done by someone with a good sense of design. They're obviously not half-assed.

Asking for feedback on how to improve MSPaint graphics is bad somehow? Uhhhh sure okay bro.
>>
>>173181515
>But that is, in fact, what it is.
Not in terms of quality they're not. They're well done stylistically. That's not what mspaint quality means.

>Asking for feedback on how to improve MSPaint graphics is bad somehow? Uhhhh sure okay bro.
Missed the point of what I said. I'll break it down for you: I was pointing out, in the sentence of his post where he says "I asked for feedback on something I was unsure of because presumably that's what this thread is for", the use of the word "presumably" makes the tone of his sentence appear condescending. It's similar to how my use of the words "I'll break it down for you:" earlier sounds condescending. Because it is.

I don't get why people think this anon is wrong.

He's basically saying >>173175436 has good art and the artist knows this. Yet the thing that is frustrating is the fact that the artist is trying to downplay, either artificially or perhaps honestly, how good they think it is. So they throw around the "MSPaint graphics" term as a way to say that that style is inherently bad because Paint is a bad program compared to other image manipulation programs.

Even though the artist is trying to make it look "half-assed" or like a "kid" drew it, the artist is not and appears not to acknowledge that it is in fact good art. One could look to the works of other famous artists and see that even though their style may have seemed bad, it was actually very good. Picasso and Pollock come to mind. They were amazing artists but their style may have seemed "half-assed".

I don't want to put words in >>173181297 mouth, but if the artist was more upfront about his intentions and honest about how the work is, then there would be less of a problem. It is sort of like when very obviously pretty girls post pictures on social media with things like "no make up on, i look so ugly xD" and they still look better than 90% of other girls. They KNOW they look good even when they look like slobs.
>>
>>173181854
Okay, so let me get this straight.

You like his MSPaint art.
You don't like that he calls it MSPaint art. Even though it's drawn in MSPaint and bears all of the amateur mistakes of MSPaint art, such as wonky proportions, iffy shading, and lack of consistent lines. But this somehow not makes it "MSPaint graphics".
But instead of telling him that you like his work, you want to complain about how he's being "condenscending" because you don't like a single word in his sentence and you don't like how he's accurately describing his art as MSPaint?

Holy shit, dude. I don't think I've ever seen a real tsundere before, but I guess everything's possible on a board for weeaboos.

I have a lot of fun with it.
It's got all the same usual traps as the "trying to be so retro!!!" indie games in that it only reaches the halfway point, but the core gameplay is still pretty damn fun and the items in the core campaign are neat to use. Plus, now there's all sorts of free DLC.
The extra campaigns suffer pretty heavily from "so why would I ever need this item", though, and Body Swap mode is fucking pointless. Also a lot of bosses don't really need a lot of strategy beyond "bounce on their head".
Still, I like it.

Downloading plugins is like crack man, It's just as bad as playing Skyrim and just modding it continuously.

Upgrades. You buy better places to stay and you can upgrade them.

>>173199117
I know that feel a bit. It's a minor reason behind why I no longer allow myself to use other people's plugins. I've realized most of the things I wanted the engine to do can actually be done natively through skillful use of script calls. It's more work, because I get exactly what I wanted as a result, without needing to tweak or learn how to tweak only to get what I want through the lens of how someone else wanted it. If that makes sense.

Eh, from someone who made it from scratch, I really doubt it. It took around 150 hours in all, having to learn as I go. With what I know now, I could probably hammer out the system from scratch in about 20-30 hours, including projectiles and a new item system, but that's from a place of experience.

To give a short answer, even if there was such a plugin, there are so many nuances to such a system that you'd almost certainly not get what you want. You'd get an sRPG equivalent to the RTP turn-based combat, which would require dozens of other plugins to get your particular fiddly bits right.

For what it's worth, I began with absolutely no coding experience.

Also, pic related is half of the event involved in one of the sRPG systems I worked on. It's pretty amateurish, but it does its job in spades.

I never settled on an idea for an RPG, I always thought that my setting would be too close to the standard Tolkien setting.

I did think of populating it with my own races. one idea was a race of humanoids birds (not animal like like humans with feathers instead of hair), with a second race being short amphibians that are good at maths.
and also I wondered about having a hive insect race in a fantasy setting, usually being seen in a sci-fi setting.

There was another idea I had which involved magic being used by someone obtaining a mark, which would be a single word. Once marked someone would gain magical powers based on whatever word they picked. For example if someone picked the word fire, they could master fire powers or even marksmanship.

my RPG knowledge is as wide as other people.

has an RPG had enemy status weaknesses?
For example poison would be more effective against certain enemies
or confuse would be more effective against certain ones.

of course I know it has been done before, (like undead enemies being immune to Death and robots immune to poison) but I mean on a wider scale, with every type of enemy having unique weaknesses. In the same way they cant be weak to elements.

Alright so, I'm trying to figure out where I should make my game should have a difficulty spike.
My biggest issues are how easy should the first boss be? Should they even have mechanics or should I give the player a quick power trip before I start throwing stuff at them or should the bosses have -simple- gimmicks?

As for the rest of the game, should the third boss be where I start to pick things up and be a little less merciful and continue from there? I kinda want the game to be channeling but fair. I dont know where to start making it hard without making people want to quit.

I think that every boss should be an opportunity to teach the player something about how encounters will play out with increasing complexity.

For example, my first boss battles teach players that some items have effects on certain creatures and how to target other enemies. In the coming areas those two things are important to understand in order to progress.

You can keep doing this, layering on additional mechanics that the player has to master in order to comfortably get through the next area. Each "difficulty spike" can be an opportunity to teach the player!

Personally, I'm trying hard not to assume that my player has much (if any) general RPG knowledge.

There's plugins for preloading assets on initial game load instead of "when they're needed" which is supposed to smooth things out when calling for bgm changes, battleback changes, any sprite changes through events pretty much but at the cost of having 1 really big load at the beginning of the game or map. >>
>>173266634
Depends on a lot of factors. A LOT of factors.

Do you pirate the engine you use and risk having the engine-makers aware of it and capable of taking down your game if they feel like it, or do you buy it?
Do you use free-to-use sounds, are you capable of making your own sounds, or do you buy pre-mixed sound libraries?
Are you capable of drawing your own art, or are you comfortable with using RTP graphics, or do you want to hire artists for your game?
How about music? Can you find free-to-use music? Can you compose your own music? Or do you want to hire musicians?

Etc, etc, etc. Literally every single field you can think of, you have three options: Buy it, do it yourself, or use the free alternatives.
Buying hits your wallet.
Doing it yourself takes longer.
Free alternatives aren't always consistent quality.
>>
>>173267158

>>
>>173266634
I have spent a total of $150 on my game thus far and it's going swimmingly well. If you are determined to make all of your own assets, it's not very expensive.
>>

>risk having the engine-makers aware of it and capable of taking down your game if they feel like it
I have never heard something like this happening.
>>
>>173268476
It hasn't happened yet, and to be honest I would be amazed if it does happen with Joe Gamer's Cool Quest as compared to something super-high profile.
But yeah, they know the difference between a game made with pirated software and a game made with legit software. So the risk is still there, as miniscule as it is.
>>
>>173268079
I'd say the time spent making (quality) assets is way more daunting than paying money for stuff, honestly.

Seriously though if you know what to look for there's really not much you have to spend money on.

Thousands of free assets online that only ask to be included in your credits or have some sort of link to them in a notepad.

Free alternatives for anything you need

$800 for photoshop just to make some signs?
>Gimp is nearly as powerful and free to use
>Inkscape for making vector art is also free

So serious you want to make your own 3D cutscenes?
>Blender for creating 3D models (Free)
>Source Filmmaker to animate and make videos with those 3D models (Free)

Make your own music?
>LMMS is a powerful music tool about as powerful as you can get (Free)
>Audacity (Free)

Need to record something for Youtube like a trailer for your game?
>OBS Open Broadcasting Software is Free and allows streaming online and recording straight to file

People blow money on useless shit they could get done legal and free all the time. I've spent years learning how to be poor and rarely is piracy needed in most cases free alternatives exist.

>Plugins, Fonts and brushes for Gimp

I paid $20 a pop a while back for 5 different 3 minute songs which seemed like a pretty good deal. That was from a starving college student though so he was probably on the cheap side.

Your comp is probably less weak then you think. DS Emulator is at fault, very very poor optimization. I have a top end gaming labtop and it still hiccups with that thing even when everything else runs fine.

The last two musicians who offered me to make music left me hanging so I'm a little reluctant to take on your offer.

How about something romantic? For when the MC gets together with his girl after a long and wondrous time. I would like for this to be played on a violin and maybe a piano but this would be entirely up to you.

The DeMuMe dev is both unskilled and a major asshole. It's very poorly optimized and if it doesn't run well, that's not an accurate reflection on your PC. Unfortunately it's the only decent DS emulator on PC.
Ironically, Drastic on Android out performs DesMuMe in literally every regard while running on a mobile device. Unfortunately it costs a few bucks and pirating it is difficult. Still, you won't get better DS emulation than it.

Alternatively you could just get a flashcart.

I'm guessing there is no way to grant additional turn if you hit weakness like SMT games?
>>

Or do you mean

>Fire attack vs ice triggers a second fire cast automatically

>>173330362
>Could you be a bit more specific?

>Fire attack vs ice enemy Fire attack damage triggers an extra turn
It also inflict down on enemy.
No extra turn if you hit weakness on downed enemy.
>>
>>173330976
That's pretty broken. Mainline SMT's single extra turn per round is powerful enough in itself without giving you the ability to attack EVERY enemy in turn.

so when people try and make these projects, do they try and make a huge epic or do the sensible thing and make something smaller.

What I mean exactly is to just make something that would involve 1 dungeon, 1 town and 1 boss for example.
>>
>>173347263

I think they're mostly trying to do something smaller, but the definition of "smaller" varies from person to person. Some will be satisfied with a game with one dungeon, one town and boss as mentioned, but there are also people like me, whose ideas for smaller projects are still pretty grandiose(it's been nearly two years since I've started working on my current game, which was supposed to be a "small" project).

I think most people just try to do a lot of projects, which will eventually fail, until they find one they are comfortable with working on and then stick with it until it's done.

Okay i got as close as i could, There's literally no info on the code i would need to make it work. There's a trait in state traits for Action Times + which allows any character with the state a second turn. I need to know the javascript call for this event something like user.actiontimes = 2) or something but it's not that simple. It's a trait so there HAS to be a code for it but nobody knows it and if they do it's nowhere online.

First i grabbed a few yanfly scripts StatesCore, Buffs&StatesCore, Auto Passive States. I then created a state called Ice Element and added that state to an (Ice) enemy as a passive state with <Passive State: 11> in the notetag

I then added this to the Fire spell notetag

<Before Eval>
if (target.isStateAffected(11)) {
(This is where my extra turn would go, If i had one)

}
</Before Eval>

This would work if i could figure out how to add action times + into a notetag

So after getting frustrated i stuck with the same plan but this time i created a state(34) with the Action Times + 100% on it and used

<Before Eval>
if (target.isStateAffected(11)) {
user.addState(34);

}
</Before Eval>

This does add the state but it adds it on the next turn, Not before the enemy gets to act. so i went off and tried my best to figure out if there was some plugin allowing states to be applied instantly this turn before damage eval

At this point i was just trying to make something work so I then tried making a state that disables enemy actions and using the same script as before to check if the enemy is in the Ice Element state i could prevent the enemy from attacking so it was like adding another turn to the user but using $gameTroop.addState didn't work and i couldn't figure out how to apply a state to multiple enemies.

I know what you want is probably a little different (before skill is used, Check state then apply 2 turns to the player rather than (Take a second action after the skill is used)

Atk Up
Magic attack up
MP cost for all spells up
Evasion down

Alcohol is a muscle relaxer, but also makes you not care where you are hit, so damage taken should remain the same
>>

That really depends on the drunk.

Warrior gets drunk
>Agl down
>Evasion down
>Atk up
>Defense up
>Can't use abilities

Healer gets drunk
>All stats down
>Can't use spells or skills

Martial Artist/Monk gets drunk
>Atk down
>Agl up
>Evasion up
>60% chance to attack 2 times
>20% chance to attack 3 times
>Defense up or down either way

My thought is
>Warriors hold their liquor and actually get decently buffed from it
>Healer are lightweights and get laid out by a little beer
>Martial Artist gain drunken fist and just wreck everything

Poison
Slow movement

>>
>>173394945

Basically this, but the latter two mostly happen in 3d environments. For rm games, relevant bits would be damage/poison floor (it doesn't make shit hard, it just wastes my time having to potion up every 20 steps) and high encounter rates (just because mosquitoes swarm in swamps doesn't mean your fucking encounters have to).

Also, bland graphics.
>>
>>173394674
I forgot to mention there's a few things broken in the demo that do actually work if you correctly set them up. The Demo just broke a few things. For instance the sight plugin actually does work great and enemies that see you will chase you but you need to set it up. The thieving event where you steal stuff but get caught if the NPC's see you also works fine but it seemed broken in the demo.

In FF7 and Tales of the Abyss, you crossed a swamp on the overworld with a monster chasing you.
It was kinda annoying in Tales of the Abyss because the monster was invincible and you have to take a safe route with flowers because the monster avoided them.

Now that I think about it. Digimon World 3 also had an invincible boss in the swamp that blocked your path. You had to do a fetch quest to get an item that smelled and made the boss retch and run away.

Chrono Cross had a marsh with a flying bug that you couldn't kill because later in the game you needed to ride it, by attracting it with fruit.
And In the Shadow forest (not exactly a swamp) you had to carry spores to get a monster or something out of your way.

I suppose it's a trope and I just never realized it before.

Legend of Dragoon had a plant mutated by the dragons toxin, that blocked your path. You had to purify it with water from a shrine.

In Link's Awakening, you needed Bow Bow to eat the flowers blocking the entrance into the second dungeon in the swamp before you have the Power Bracelet to pull them up yourself.

I guess it's a little annoying that swamps are just road blocks, 90% of the time.
>>
>>173400257
Breath of Fire 4 had giant snake platforms that moved in circles, you had to scare them in order to position them in a way that let you walk across them, because the walkway was all busted.

FF11 didn't really have a swamp. But it had an area that was either Flooded or Dry depending on the season.

I guess, FFX had Guadosalam. I never really thought of it as a swamp because it was a town. But it makes thematic sense, since it had an enterance to the Farplane; and wetlands are often associated with the Undead since coffins will float to the surface when it floods.
And Leblanc, who moves there in FFX-2, was something of a Southern Belle, like New Orleans which a French name. You know, like a female Gambit from the X-men cartoon? But obviously her voice actress didn't have a cajun accent.

Oops, I said, FF11 but I meant FF12. The Croc monster was one of my favorite designs.

>Lablanc
Her outfit is obviously the 4th suit to the LadyLuck Dress Sphere, the gambling tie in again with a cajun culture.
But honestly I see these connotations flying over most people's heads because it requires knowledge of the culture and geography.

I certainly didn't know anything about New Orleans when I was 12.

Alright everyone. Listen up. This is an impromptu resource activity. First you'll need a shovel. Don't ask to borrow one. Make one yourself.
An Icon, Characterset, A picture, I don't care. Just get one!

ok so let run this mechanic by you

I like the idea of rewarding the player for the variety of enemies rather than the amount. In a story you might see someone who slays dragon and thus has skills to counteract them.

I'll try to explain this

>you fight an enemy, perhaps it's a flying insect
>you select an 'observe' command in battle
>it uses a move like double team to raise its evasion
>if the player observes enough of these moves they learn a skill
>such as ''True Aim'' that never misses

give a bonus for observing during a preemptive strike, using the time to instead see how they act without hostility.

Have an easy way to see the total list of possible skills to gain, for people who want to get everything.
>>
>>173411423
It sounds neat, but it also feels like it would encourage a lot of grinding to pick up those skills. (And a lot of frustration if you're trying to learn something off rare enemies.)

Laptop and 2 graphics processor.
I've tried googling but did anyone else encountered the same problem? How did you solve it?
