The theory doesn't work. Vetra's dad was supposed to be a criminal who got mixed up with questionable figures. Saren was supposed to be a model turian prior to indoctrination. He also had been a Spectre for 24 years by ME1, meaning his Spectre career started in 2159 and he had to have been a very distinguished soldier before then. Vetra was born 2155-ish and was already a teenager when her and her dad left Palaven. Why would a highly respected Spectre be living in poverty dealing with criminals in the Minos Wasteland?

I'll give them this: they did much more with this crew in one game than the Mass Effect trilogy games individually did. That's a feat in itself. It's impossible to compare them to characters we knew for years and over multiple games.

I'm also relieved that nobody ended up being a copy of someone else. Peebee is nothing like Liara, Drack has plenty to differentiate him from Wrex, despite similar design cues Jaal and Garrus are nothing alike in personality, etc.

Liam's thing is that he's a little impulsive; he looks before he leaps. It's a double-edged sword: sometimes it fucks things up, like with his loyalty mission, but it also means he's ready to improvise at the drop of a hat when necessary (which is probably why he was so good at crisis response, because that job would've required a fuckton of on-site improvisation). And it's a major factor in him leaving the Milky Way with the Initiative.

And that same tendency is probably why he and Jaal get along so well, because angara tend to "look before they leap" with their emotions and words. Neither of them pull any punches with each other, and it fosters mutual respect.

The MP in DAI was trash though. The way the loot system worked meant that you would never stop getting trash whose only use was to be broken down for use in crafting new outfits and attachments. At least in ME3 you would stop getting bad weapons once they're fully upgraded (and thus potentially useful).

It doesn't help that higher difficulties were death parties full of one shot kills.

No, they collapsed quicker because of how centralized their government was in the Citadel, which got hit first, like every cycle except for ours. Considering that, it still took the Reapers centuries to actually defeat the Protheans. If you're sniping, Maverick armor is the way to go. Headshot bonus & extra ammo.

Otherwise you've got the Angara armor for tech power bonuses, or Kett armor + Maverick chestpiece for plain old weapon damage.

The fact remains that the only reason we even last the short amount of time we do, is because unlike every other cycle before us, the Reapers don't get to show up at the Citadel right off the bat. If they had, there would be no Mass Effect 3 to play at all.

So to recap, no, the Protheans lost because the Reapers got up to their usual tricks of bumrushing the Citadel, and our cycle did vastly worse than them precisely because we were far more divided than the protheans ever were.
And just to reiterate so you get it through your fucking skull: If the guys from Ilos hadn't disabled the Reapers ability to jump directly on top of the Citadel, we wouldn't even have been able to hold out a tenth of the time the Protheans did, as evidenced by the how fucking shit everyone but Shepard was at fighting them.

Salarians and krogans fighting, asari pissing off because they don't like the krogan joining the war effort, the quarians and the geth trying to wipe eachother out, the asari hiding the fact that they had WORKING PROTHEAN TECH for centuries and people like Udina trying to take power for their own ends. That's your diversity.

And don't start with "muh canon". You wanna know what's canon? The protheans holding their ground for centuries against the Reapers, despite losing their central government early in the war, and our cycle barely surviving half a year despite the fact that we had several key advantages over the previous cycles, all thanks to Ilos.

Diversity did fuck all for our cycle. Shepards iron will in uniting the galaxy and the good luck that some Protheans on Ilos were smart enough to disable the trap of the Citadel, that's what potentially saved them.

Sid always lived in comfort despite the extremely harsh upbringing Vetra had to go through, and is positively innocent and happy as of now, despite her sister becoming a mercenary and smuggler (having previously been a manual labor for dangerous work) at age 18 to support them. Sid even admits privately to Ryder (both in-person and in emails) that her sister basically devoted her life to taking care of her with no regard for herself, despite trying to hide it.

Reyes gives the impression that he's not going to fuck with people he's friends with, and he's friends with you while Sloane never likes you. Plus the fact that he's romanceable, fling or not, lends him more of a trustworthy aspect because it seems like he does come to care about you.

I actually thought Reyes was a pleasant surprise. He has his genuine moments with you but is also absolutely sketchy as fuck. It's fun trying to decide if the rumors are right about him or not (as he claims), or a mix in between.

I think I said this before, but I still feel like the whole Kadara arc belonged in a different game. It feels so oddly separate from everything else. A contained bubble of story.

So what profiles / skills you guys liking?

I'm playing a vanguard type, (shotguns/charge primary) but I felt the actual vanguard profile lacking. seems 100% based around melee.

Cant really decide on a profile thats best for charge/shotgun, or 2 supporting skills really.

If I have it right though I can use either sentinel's or explorers "Power restoration and defense" to get over 70% of my shield back on a 50% restoration charge so I don't have to take the 100% lvl6 upgrade and get the insane CD reduction instead.
