Not true. It's also all about memorizing how to print to the screen and perform printed-to-screen functions. Now that's it.

The sprites would be fine, it's just your code. I can give you some new code to have smoothing between frames so it simulates having more frames, along with better movement because you seem to move one tile of floor at a time as if you were snapping to a grid.

I've been studying and practicing so I can make some music for videogames.
>>
>>172161994
Like i said, that's not the problem. If you mean the low FPS, it is caused by the GIF recording software. If you mean getting stuck on walls it's also caused by a minor collision detecting bug i will fix soon.
The only problem i can't solve on my own is making more assets for the game, because the person who drew all of this actually hates drawing and will not follow up with drawing more.
>>
>he isn't making his own language

>>172162125
Well, you can take the color scheme they used and draw basic military crates and shit to take up space so it doesn't look so empty. Military crates don't take a lot of work to make, even if you aren't artistic.
>>
>>172162024
I like the first one, but it doesn't loop fast enough like a soundtrack typically does. The second one badly needs better sounds for it.
I wouldn't put them in my game because they're not fast paced enough, just based on that, it would clash too much.

In unrelated news, what's the best practice:
I have a mesh where I want to modify triangles on the fly, and it's gotta have mesh collision too.

1. Every tri/quad is its own mesh, I can easily remove them without affecting the rest.
2. All the tris/quads are in the same mesh. When I want to remove one, I open up the mesh, remove the face, and I update the mesh, normals, colliders.

I made a sort of a ring fbx in Blender (a flat cylinder with a large cylinder taken out of the middle) to use as a custom trigger volume and have set it up to do that (Collision - Trigger, Visible - No). However, it is generating OnComponentBeginOverlap even when I go through the hole in the middle.

Is there a setting in Unreal to allow for convex or porous triggers or is it just impossible?

Get in the right frame of mind and stay dedicated.

1. Build a study calendar. Give yourself a reasonable amount of time, like 6 months to learn something significant, with a reasonable amount of time in between to practice / relax (but don't be too lenient - try to do something every week day, or every other week day with a minimum 30 hours a week).

2. Start eating better and going to sleep at better times.

3. Don't jerk off as much.

4. Use social media more and watch non-tutorial videos like dev diaries and such to keep yourself invented and in the cultural mindset.

You have your whole life to play vidya, watch movies / anime, and do other shit. But the longer you wait to get into the career you want to be in, the harder your future will be.

You just gotta open up the mesh properties (double click on the mesh in the content browser) and edit the collision mesh so it has a hole.
By default meshes just get a basic collision shape generated for them.

You can build one from basic shapes, import one, or find the Collision Complexity option and choose Use Complex as Simple to use the mesh itself as the collision mesh.

Switched to Unreal 4.15 today (from 4.12). Suddenly everything looks way more crisp.

Also might actually cave in and implement kicking. However not even near as powerful as in Dark Messiah. I was playing that again this weekend. Jesus fucking Christ. The only reason why this game is so hard is because the kick is so damn overpowered. The regular sword strikes on the other hand basically do nothing.

I don't think that's true. More likely they're creating something close to something they've heard. Our musical vocabulary is built out of things we've already heard anyways. Try too hard to get away from that and you'll just end up making noise. Art is a form of communication and communication is fundamentally about repeating things we've heard.

It has some serious weirdness in it but a beginner won't even run into that. The most unusual thing they'll encounter is the whitespace, which will teach them good habits instead of bad ones. Lua is probably worse in that regard. I'd still recommend starting with one or the other for a total beginner, because a total beginner won't understand the most basic things about programming.

I feel kind of bad for Unity. It's got valuable strong points, like being able to deploy to everything, but it's also hobbled by pathetic weaknesses. UE4 totally outclasses it for 3D games. GameMaker is... not worse... for 2D.

Unity deserves to fail and die and be forgotten, but I can't enjoy watching that happen because the people who work on it are trying very hard.

Java is primitive shit. There was a Java operating system based on the Linux kernel, and it was so slow that it probably killed people. C# also has a lot of libraries that make your life easier meaning that a lot of the hard work has been done for you already and you can just use the implementation.

sure, C++ is more powerful, you can do a lot more with it, but that also equates to more work for you because a lot of the already implemented shortcuts available in C# isn't available to you. Okay? How does that change anything? No one cares about the number of libraries in a programming language.
>sure, C++ is more powerful
YOU JUST FUCKING SAID IT YOURSELF. C++ IS MORE POWERFUL! YOU ALSO SAID YOU CAN DO A LOT MORE! I think that by itself warrants that C++ is better than C# as a fact. You have to do more work, who cares? When I start writing code, I get lost in it. I find writing code fun and as much as I want what i'm making to be functional right away, I never wanna stop coding it. That's why bug fixing is so damn fun. I love having to code more, it makes it better when you actually understand it, try learning C++ until you understand and you'll love it more.

I need some help.

I have three states inside a substate machine in unity. (IDLE, WALK BACK, WALK).

I have another substate machine with two states in it (PUNCH, KICK).

If I am on the base layer and right click the idle substate machine it appears make transition, but of a gray color.

If I make the transition, it doesn't come any states from the IDLE substate machine, but rather it makes the transition from the IDLE substate machine.

Does this mean the transition can be made from any substate in the IDLE substate machine?

This is a humble reminder that learning how to develop your game from scratch (that is, not relaying in game engines such as unity and GMS) will take you closer to deploying a game and beat your competitors.

Because games and game development are so popular, and you are competing against other games for attention, it is in your interest to use more performant tools that allow you to program your game without cutting any feature or depending on closed software.

If you are interested in defeating your main oponents (those using game engines, like the ones listed in the op poster), here are some tips:

- Use efficient and performant programming languages, such as c++, rust or nim.
* cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/
* doc.rust-lang.org/book/
* nim-by-example.github.io

- Learn algorithms:
* coursera.org/specializations/algorithms

- Learn maths and physics:
* khanacademy.org/math
* khanacademy.org/science/physics

- Learn how to get the most out of your cpu:
* dataorienteddesign.com/dodmain/
* learncpp.com/cpp-tutorial/79-the-stack-and-the-heap
* fgiesen.wordpress.com/2016/08/07/why-do-cpus-have-multiple-cache-levels/

- Learn how to do graphics:
* opengl-tutorial.org/beginners-tutorials/

Good luck.

>>172185786
The more you have to do, the more freedom you have with your project. Usually, when it comes to having to code more to get something done, you have a lot of things you can change. Like custom int-in, custom value for that, when you want it to appear, etc. When there are lines of code that do it for you, it takes away that privilege. Say, we have two (fake) programing languages: JaVaS and C++-+. One language, C++-+ calls for you to set how long you want a print to the screen to appear after the function is called, and the other, Java, instantly calls it after it finishes reading it. You can set it to appear 5 seconds after it reads the function if you have some form of timed-event going on. With JaVaS, you wouldn't be able to make that timed-event.

>>172186013
I don't drink either, I am afraid I may end up writing code while drunk and creating a program to stalk people's info.

>>172186143
Java is a shit language, it is slow and doesn't work as well as C++. How to print text to screen in C++: cout<<"Your text here."<<endl;" when within any function. With Java you have to create a string class and put the print-to screen in the string class. It's dumb.

Learn the basics of coding, then try to make some simple games. Eventually ramp up your projects. Start with placeholder art, then iterate. Your art, and your games in general, are going to be bad, for a long, long time. But you'll get better.

The most important thing above all else is to just keep at it. I know it can be frustrating in the early days, when you don't yet have the skills to fully capture your ideas, but the only way to get better is by doing.

Each small piece of progress is to be considered an achievement. The simplest will motivate you to continue, the best will bring a smile to your face.
Progressing through the days/months/years and seeing from where you come from is like adding a new dimension of gratification. You'll notice that as you go.
Looking at other people's work and being discouraged by what they've accomplished is not the right state of mind. Their successes should be a testament that hard work pays off.

Just sit down and code/draw/compose my dude. Or do it sitting up.

Art is very important, and most games will sell better with better art. There are plenty of great looking games with pixel art that sell well. The gamedev should choose the style they like the best, and try to make or get the best art they can for their game.

Can't imagine anyone else would need this aside from me, but just in case, take some random numbers: https://hastebin.com/ramibetolu.txt

Today I had to figure out how to generate 256 values between -1 and 1 in a "perfect" gaussian/normal distribution (M:0, SD:0.375). When you bin these in a histogram, you get a nice bell curve, see pic related. Using it for a network-friendly pseudo-RNG for my bullet spread calculation.

Mediocre art needs to be very stylized and unique to stand out, this is true for both 3D and 2D.

People dont favor one art style over another.

The only thing they care about is if the game is good. If the entire thing is cohesive and if the art facilitates the gameplay.

There's a reason the mainstream industry never makes 2D anymore. It's only really a thing for indie games.

The ability to block/guard attacks is already ingame, although there's no separate animation/state for when you successfully block. I've gone and tweaked the enemy hurtbox sprite to make it easier to see.

As for counter-punching, counter-punching already deals extra damage and I'm thinking about making it so counter-punches also grant the player bonus super meter. I'm also considering making the player have a choice between supers (IE: A high-spin kick or an uppercut, where one does more damage but you take double damage if hit during it) but that's only if I have art budget for it.

>>172194934
Important things:
-Redo player animation system for states with hitboxes to use the same animation system that the enemy uses. This is top priority and 100% essential in order to do other priorities like adding in the super abilities. I'm not going to go through the trouble of putting in a placeholder state and properly time the animations and hitboxes in the current system only to have to redo it down the line anyways. It's already getting hard enough to look at the choppy player jabbing sprites compared to the much-smoother enemy movements.
-Give super meter actual behavior, so it rises when the player hits the foe and falls when the player is struck. This is a smaller project compared to the above, but is also necessary in order to implement super punches.
-Put Momentum variables and UI elements in place. Momentum is an enemy resource, and is the enemy's defensive counterpart to the player's offensive super meter. When enemies with a Momentum bar hurt you, they gain Momentum, which acts as a damage shield while in effect and causes them to restore health on successful hit. Enemies lose momentum slowly over time and also lose a fixed amount when the player strikes them, with the intent being that some supers (rapid jabs) are better for clearing enemy momentum and others (high jump kicks and uppercuts) are better for plowing through enemy hp.

To make it more fun increase the speed level of the cube movement and have the paths disappear after a few moments and make the paths icy that are slippery to run on

do other franchise writers end up writing in advance this much? I assume the basic star wars prequel stories were laid out right when george lucas was writing star wars episode 4 and then when it came time to make those movies he finalized the stories or whatever.

Opinion on the icons other than being blurry?

Hunger/thirst only appears if you're under 25 hunger.
If you're about 75 dirtyness the icon appears for that.
If your wellness is under 25 then you get the near death icon.

lol this is a joke
>>
>>172210986
>VR culture
>>
>>172211024
yeah, the first poll had the option for everyone to create their own theme and apparently, people who came up with such gems as Angry white developer jam, Nojam jam and Link's boipussy jam thought it beneath them to cast their votes in subsequent rounds
>>
>>172211359
the fact that the most voted theme has only 14 votes should tell you something about this poll shit
>>
>>172210367
I like them ideas.

Thirst could have random blackouts or something.
>>
>>172211467
Was thinking "coughing", but it would probably have to be explained to make sense (and then players would miss it / forget it)
>>
>>172211467
thirst = screen blurring then normal then blurring with black faded borders that fade too
>>
>>172211460
what, you think there is like hundreds of people making games in these threads or something?

anyway, yes it tells me that roughly half of the people here are fucking princesses who would rather kill themselves than make a compromise
>>
>>172211845
Anon, this is a hobby for most of us. We're not going to make a game about a theme we don't like because why the fuck should we?
Otherwise, we would already be having a loli jam.
Also this thread has 129 posters.
>>
>>172211845
Or, you know, people are sick of the

>ok guise, this 1 is 4 realzies, final one, promise

Got a tie? Do a dual-theme jam, it doesn't fucking matter.
>>
>>172211845
>what, you think there is like hundreds of people making games in these threads or something?
There are.

~250 people in the AGDG related Discord
Threads always float above 100 unique IPs
And there's always newfags with basic questions every goddamn thread

Your next move is to say they're shitty devs / don't stick around. I don't have a response to this other than "fuck you" but yeah.

too late for me to wait for a new thread.

working on a sprint, it looks pretty dopey but i'll fix it tomorow.

>Your next move is to say they're shitty devs / don't stick around.
No, my response is that they aren't devs under any metric.
If you honestly think AGDG has more than 40 people actively working on a game, you're fucking delusional.

WE'RE UP ALL NIGHT TO GET LUCKY
>>
>>172212792
That doesn't change the fact that a lot of people browse these threads. Do you think that only yesdevs voted your poll?
Anyway go ahead, make your yokai whatever jam, and see how many people here will actually participate.

GAME DIRECTION UPDATED

AGDG has more than that on the recaps alone, and there's quite a few people who refuse to post on the recaps ever.

How is Discord different from the /vg/ thread? More shitposting? More collab?

More circlejerky. If you're not a social media person you will despise it.

I am not really a social media person in a sense that i need to maintain a fanpage for myself and i loathe every second of it except for when i shitpost on it

Are you using C++? Because there are all kinds of number distribution in the standard library already

exactly me without her after a long time. Productivity drops to -1 and I can't find the motivation to do anything, not even shopping for groceries ffs. Autism, not even once

>>172215130
you're more likely to start a collab there than here, even if only because the communication isn't anonymous

What are you using to make the effect of "pixel lines" or whatever? Shaders?

typing in vr sucks, we need to make it better
