PROGRESS: Sheep now shows that he feels pain and also reacts appropriately to which side you're punching him in. I also fixed a bug that was nearly-unnoticable with the test sprites in that if you threw a second punch while they were already reeling from the first punch, their sprite would flip when it wasn't supposed to because you hadn't actually hit them yet.

yes, but it's worse than the problem you're trying to fix: force the players have to find recipes ingame in order to craft something, even if they know all the ingredients and have them already.

the true solution is to just show the player what they can craft with the items that they are holding, as well as possible recipes if they found more items. for example, if you have at least 1 stone, it will show all the items you can make with stone.

Asheron's Call had a neat system. In order to learn a spell you had to sort of craft it by selecting spell components and casting. The high level spells were different for everybody based on some sort random seed.

Of course players cracked this with a tool that eliminated possible components based on the spell recipes you already knew.

Help me decide on my pixel scaling, /agdg/

On one hand, adaptive fullscreen resolution. This would imply perfect pixel scaling via x2,x3,x4 zoom but would make me work with "safe margins" and floating GUI elements that would take some extra testing to do, and differences of up to 250 pixels of game screen lost between resolutions. It'd have some issues on smaller or awkward screen resolutions with framing, but it'd ultimately look good and provide the best quality for the final product. I've seen Hammerwatch taking this approach.

On the other hand, fixed fullscreen resolution made for 720p and 1080p fullscreen, which would allow me to make fixed UI elements and generally prove to be easier to work with, with the downsides of having float multiplier zooms for other screens that would make pixels look bad and most players sticking to windowed mode, ultimately sacrificing quality for smoother workflow. I've seen games like VA-11 HALL-A and Owlboy doing this approach.

So in short, quality that requires certain workarounds and extra scripts to work properly, or saying "fuck it" and having a fixed resolution.

exporting as an .fbx

you're now ready to import and use your model in unity

depending on the complexity of your model it's not really that hard but involves a lot of technical steps which can take some time to master.

start by searching for character modelling tutorials in blender.

basically tutorials for all the necessary steps exists everywhere on the internet.

I can absolutely not get it working with a simple plane. It's either one face has the texture and another has the texture in full black, either both faces have both the regular texture and the black texture at the same time.
However, I have found a trick that seems to be working fine. I turned the planes into rectangles, transfered the surface normals from a half sphere like you explained, and toggled backface culling on since otherwise the two back faces of the opposing faces of the rectangles gave it a black outline.
It works, but is it right ? The normals look like that.

Completely depends on the game and the skills of the person/people making the game.
I'd say a month is maybe the minimum for something super tiny and simple. This includes bug testing and polishing.
You could definitely make a functioning game in a week or less, game jams do this all the time, but in those cases I'd consider the games more like prototypes, not full games. They can be expanded and polished into a full game given more time though.

Adjustments to color balance to make the game brighter, fixed a REAL serious lightmap bug that was causing an enormous performance drop (gigantic background geometry was having full-resolution lightmaps baked to it, causing an enormous texture pool overflow), and I FINALLY implemented the actual Ground Pound impact attack and effects, which means Dixie's core moveset is complete!

I now need to start adding other weapon types with different melee combos to round out the set; level 1 won't be complete until I add a sword weapon at the very least.

But, next up is getting enemies to hold and drop weapons.

The "FP" perspective isn't actually, if you look close it's an over-the-shoulder perspective that zooms in on one of her floating hands.

The combos can't be too fast as-is, since she's wielding the unarmed "weapons"; if they're really fast, then equipping faster fist weapons will be ridiculous.

Also the game isn't really 3D-Zelda-inspired at all. More Banjo-Kazooie with complex combat.

I should clarify what's happening here, it makes more sense if you understand the game:

At any time, you can switch between two weapons; one is in your "Dixie's hands" slot, and one is in your "floating hands" slot. If the weapon in your floating hands slot is a melee weapon, your reticle will appear in front of Dixie, because that's where the "ranged" attacks will land; if it's a gun, it will be a normal reticle and shots will fly center screen.

Conversely, if you have a gun in your melee slot, your light attacks will use whatever the gun class's corresponding melee set is, but your heavy attacks will be replaced with auto-aiming gunshots.

I pick up the gun as a ranged weapon; mid-combo, I decide to use it as a melee weapon, so I hit the swap-slots key. This causes the gun to become my melee weapon (so I can do Dante pistol shots that auto-hit the enemy), but it also briefly activates my "ranged" weapon which is now my empty fists, causing the melee reticle to appear for those weapons.

So the aiming reticle you're seeing isn't for the pistol at all, it's actually for these attacks right here.

One thing I'm not sure of is the effectiveness of settings that don't place in the real world.

Like one idea I have is that the MC is transported into his own mind. There are real consequences that are at stake but I'm worried that players won't care as much because its not happening in the real world.

Well then your main problems are:
1. Keeping it coherent UNLIKE SE and any Kojimbo movie.
2. Convincing & enthralling personality splits that don't falter from tired tropes. (Pure good, pure bad, (random quirk) personified trait/ etc
3. Predictability;The device that ties the problem to the protag to the resolution. And making sure you dont tell a boring story.

In a story like that, I dont want to hear that the MC's direct mortality is at stake. Don't directly reference the splinters as being a part of the MC.

How do you intend to reflect the death of them on the MC?

But then you get to the problem of towards the end where things are starting to become obvious. People will stop caring once theyre about to get out of the MC's mind. Or whats left when all the splnters are dead / or even if you do kill them. So take a note from The Shining and dont even reveal the real location directly.

Hollow Knight is doing pretty well.
If you want an example of a good game that hasn't done too hot, check out Brigador. Fun game, nice graphics, plenty of juice. But it didn't become a big hit, there isn't even any particular reason, there's not any major flaws with the game at all. It may be priced a bit high compared to other indie games, but it does go on sale during Steam sale events.

Also, Brigador is a good example of why you shouldn't enginedev. They made their own engine which increased the time it took to finish the game, and in the end, it didn't have any major benefits.

Well again, my other idea follows the same basic structure of confronting boss characters except this time they're actually clones of yourself.

The game takes place in a abandoned research facility (think portal) controlled by clones of yourself who have wreaked havoc on the place and its (now mostly dead) staff.

You are charged to kill these clones by their creator, the man who created this research facility and has survived the initial massacre and is hiding in some corner of the facility. You were essentially created in last ditch effort and as such have less self determination.

Over the course of the game, you learn why these clones were created in the first place, why they went on a killing spree, in addition their own histories with one another.

I decided that I hadn't made enough progress today, so I've laid the groundwork for the sheep's low guard state. He now is capable of recognizing and attempting to predict whether the next punch you're going to throw when he comes out of his stun state is going to be high or low, and will block your attacks accordingly. I'm going to work on the mechanism for him to then swap between his high and low guard states at regular intervals, to keep things mixed up.

He doesn't have a sprite for it yet, so I've done my best to make a suitable temporary one.
