I think going totally 3D would still be preferable to working out a way to handle prerendering every animated sprite.

Totally unrelated but I've been wondering how 2.5D like Project Zomboid or Shadowrun would affect the difficulty in programming/putting everything together since it keeps the best elements of both on the asset end: It's way easier and faster to draw a static object in 2D and way easier and faster to animate a 3D rig.

Unity question
Its freezing when the Game tab is visible. So if its visible/in its own window when [some code] happens, it freezes. But if its buried under another tab, it runs fine until clicking on the game tab to bring it visible.

Has anyone had this before?

Nothing much for visible progress today. I finally fixed a huge bug in my netcode that was causing a weird jitter/snapping artifact when ships were moving slowly at low ping.

Also added this little spotlight effect so you can tell when a turret is active/manned on a capital ship. It's placeholder but mostly just a proof of concept.

PROGRESS:
After a METRIC ASSLOAD of annoying errors in trying to get the hitboxes to change the enemy state correctly, I have managed to get the enemy hurt state working!

...but the sprite for it isn't done so I had to make a temporary placeholder for it. It flashes in the webm because of the webm compression, but it does not do that ingame.

I would implement the stunned status for after countering enemy hits, but I'm feeling a bit drained after the trouble I had to go through to get the script to stop crashing gamemaker from animation index errors.

Yes.
Basically everything I've been able to accomplish so far was all started by me following along with shaun spalding's gamemaker tutorial videos. After a little bit I started to get familiar with GM enough to the point where I don't need tutorial videos anymore to know how I want to accomplish what I want to do. Following along and coding with the tutorials and then tinkering with them is entirely what got me on my feet. At least when it comes to gamemaker, Shaun Spading's tutorials are really good at explaining WHY you're coding something in a specific way, not just saying what the code you have to use is.

It is a waste of time to pre-render characters like this. Setting up a simple animation system that mimics 2D frame animation is fairly straightforward. The rendering is trivial. It also means you have more tooling between asset creation and seeing it in engine. Tooling you have to create, redundantly.

Also, once you have an animation on your boned humanoid, you can apply any weapon, item, clothing you like when it is 3D. Pre-render and you have shitty combinatorial explosion that is not worth dealing with.

If I were to do project Zomboid I would do it all in 3D with an orthographic, isometric projection rendering. Probably still make the maps tile based. If you need painted details, that can just be put on some simple primitive and will integrate seamlessly.
>>
>>171990329
I think the vidoes are noisy and hard to read. Muting all the background stuff to allow the dynamic elements top pop out would be good. I don't think this would compromise the overall style. I notice this sort of noise is evident in most the levels they make. It is strange because they appear to be accomplished artist/renderer.

The models in Zomboid are realtime, not pre-rendered, so like what you're describing.

>Pre-render and you have shitty combinatorial explosion that is not worth dealing with.

Yeah, that's how I figured it'd work out. Some sort of script would have to be set up to do all the pre-rendering and then I'd still have to deal with the resultant clusterfuck of sprites that I'd likely have to spend ages making different systems in the engine to handle. It'd be like using sprite art in the same situation, not worth it in the long run if not purely for the aesthetic.

why is drawing on microsoft paint so difficult?

It is much easier to draw on paper
>>
>>171994628
The models are pre-rendered as far as I know. Unless they decided to scrap that, but last I played it was still in.

The only time I would do pre-render is because the cost of rendering is too high for real time. For Zomboid style that is totally not case.
>>
>>171995551
You have another level of disconnect between hand and screen than you do paper. Get a tablet monitor and it feels much the same as paper.

>>
vr dev is kinda hard, it goes from 0 to puke really fast
>>
>>171995792
Lol, not true at all.
The main problem with Paint is that it is for drawing pixels on a grid.
It doesn't have proper brushes at all.
>>
>>171995664
They scrapped prerendered a while ago, right now all animated assets are models unless the screen starts filling with zombies and then any zombie over a limit (normally 50) reverts to the old 2D prerender style to prop up their poorly performing engine.

https://youtu.be/vlJzeCB4Vow?t=1m45s
>>
>>171996304
Haven't used a tablet monitor so I won't comment, but it's factually undeniable that there's an additional level of disconnect introduced when drawing on a surface that translates that drawing to a monitor.
>>
>>171996803
Yeah, but that has nothing to do with MS Paint specifically.
In paint you place dots individually most of the time, and maybe use some curve tools.
It's not for drawing lines in.
>>
>>171996272

Long time tablet, incl. pen display user here:
There's still a level of disconnect on pen displays because of the parallaxing that happens between the surface and the screen. It's easier to adjust to a pen display coming directly from paper but unless you can afford a large pen display to work around the parallaxing or one of the new super expensive Cintiqs that eliminates parallaxing it's easier to use a conventional screenless tablet.
Also screenless tablets can have textured surfaces (or you can lay a sheet of paper over them) for better traction which makes it easier to be super accurate while pen display surfaces are slippery as fuck and there's nothing you can do about it (another reason to want one of the huge displays over a small one).

Wacom. The holy grail would be snagging an Intuos 3 Large from ebay but any decently sized Intuos and you're set for life unless you feel the need to upgrade to a display. Budget tablets aren't worth the complete lack of support and worse hardware. I've had my Intuos 3 since 2006 and only had to replace a cord once and the cover a few times, meanwhile the few people I know who opted for budget tablets keep having theirs break or the drivers that the manufacturers never bother to update stop working forever as if just having a generally sub-par tablet with shitty sensitivity levels and a heavy pen that you need to stick a battery in wasn't enough.

Alrighty, made dodge-maneuvers slighty more complex. If the player holds space after a dodge(A/D+space) the mech will keep accelerating, if the player holds space for too long it'll count as another dodge and drain energy. Combine that with the forward boosting and players can go super sanic.

PROGRESS

Completely rewrote the Entity/Map systems. I now have the barebones implementation of stackable entities. Basically, I can have any amount of items/doors/enemies/walls/grass/secret buttons/whateverthefucks on a single tile.

Webm shows a debug build, which has extreme logging and shit turned on, so the loading takes like a second. Otherwise the performance is about the same as it was before. I'm sure I'll be optimizing it more, though.

Feelsgoodman. 6:30am, gonna go to sleep soon

-Add V-Sync.

>>172005171
That's a possibility. First time ;)
>>
>>172005278
Still, fix your optimization with V-Sync. You will no-longer be a bad enginedev.
>>
>>172005278
It is not jokes, though. You say you have your debugging tools running, maybe you need to reduce the load on them. One way is to have several levels of debug so that you can be performant while still getting the most important metrics and info out.

The other is spiking. Maybe lets look into solving this issues now, rather than later. Try to always put a cap on any particular features load in milliseconds and keep to that target always. I feel it is going to be harder to solve later than sooner.
>>
framerate fluctuation doesn't matter if you use delta time

How much/what percent of time would you say you spend/should spend on those elements before doing an iteration of actually making game

>>172012271
You're close. The problem is actually men. They are so weak these days that social situations are enough to give some men crippling anxiety. It's not that women have changed very much. Men are so mentally and physically weak these days they aren't able to spike attraction in women so the men turn to easy alternatives: porn. You don't actually think people jerking it to trap threads are out fucking lady boys, do you?

>>172012474
The first transgender surgery happened over a century ago. People have known of it for awhile. If you are talking about "traps" or feminine boys, look to ancient times.
>>
>>172011108
>>172010889

Why is he trying to tarnish Bokube's reputation?
>>
>>172012709
Yes but I worry that women are still at least 50% of that problem. Women have unrealistic high standards, crazy moral compasses and are easily hiveminded as of late more than ever in the west.

I can see why newer/younger men are more weak because they let women make them that weak. I would have crippling anxiety too if I was a white young man lately without already having a wife or stable girlfriend. Not to mention getting married these days is worse on all levels for men compared to women, the government really needs to make the legalities of marriage more fair for men.

Its no wonder marriage rates are down.

>physically observe someone playing your game
-So you can literally see the exact points in the game that people have difficulty on, determine if it's how difficult you intended it to be and make it simpler/harder if needed
-So you can see how long it takes for them to do a certain thing, to determine if something has to be made simpler/harder
-So you can see a person's enjoyment/frustration and correlate it to a specific thing in the game, allowing you to modify things that cause unnecessary frustration and perhaps replicate that feeling of enjoyment in other areas by knowing what is causing it

>ask them specific questions about the experience both during and afterwards
-So you know specifically what people are thinking at a given point and whether they're thinking what you want them to - eg their thought process behind what they think they should do with their eyes in SIT, and whether the solution is intuitive or logical enough to someone who isn't you
-So you can ask them directly what parts they did and didn't enjoy and why, which you can use to adjust things to increase overall enjoyment

Getting a 1-5 ranking is absolutely meaningless when it comes to determining what should be adjusted to produce a better product
You do care about improving your games don't you? Not just releasing a first draft and calling it good enough right?

>So you can literally see the exact points in the game that people have difficulty on
i know which points those are because complain about those points in the comments
>determine if it's how difficult you intended it to be and make it simpler/harder if needed
that's not actually how it works, you dont magically make something easier or harder unless youre making some shitty stats based game where the user input matters less than in game math operations.
in an actual real game like SIT if you want to makes something easier to accomplish you need to understand why people are having difficulty comprehending the solution and modify to help them be less retarded (this is not possible for all users)
>So you can see a person's enjoyment/frustration and correlate it to a specific thing in the game
you're being too atomized like all idiots who think microanalyzing players do
>allowing you to modify things that cause unnecessary frustration and perhaps replicate that feeling of enjoyment in other areas by knowing what is causing it
except where the frustration was the causation of the later enjoyment....in the first place you cant go around paying too much heed to players opinions of their feelings, that they're feeling things at all is good, if they feel nothing thats an actual problem.
>thinking what you want them to
do i look like big brother to you? players can think whatever they want including something wrong. the game in SIT is not me analyzing them, they need to be able to read the scenario. players having the wrong idea and getting the wrong result means everything is working.

but those games are all literally the texbook definition of shovelware. low-value, disposable quick cash grab games. they lack content, replayability, complexity, polish.

i watched yesdev[10], i know that a chunk of those are literally just trying to cash in onto some current trends or controversies. they're quick, dirty jobs and for all your talk about game design you must definitely be aware they have no lasting appeal. maybe if you spent time trying to make games are fun and naturally appealing, they'd sell.

Sure you'll learn while doing, while making a game you're going to release.

But you'll learn faster if you're going out of your depth to make practice shit. If you're going out of your depth on your to-release project though, you're going to hit a cycle where your late-game content looks better than your early-game content and you have to keep refreshing all the assets as you get better. Nice way to stall/never release.

I have been thinking.

Should my game be real-time instead? Initially the game was supposed to play out like a tabletop kind of game but once I expanded the design to be more an RTS I feel like the constant time stopping is cumbersome and not really beneficial.

It would take a very considerable rewrite to make it real-time but I feel like the turns will be a huge burden on the design later on, it basically already plays out like an RTS but with turns instead.

On another note, I played around with 3D models, I might even redo the whole thing in a proper 3D engine in a mixed 2D+3D style for the sequel.

Why do so many indie developers settle for so little when it comes to the actual release of their game?

Take Undertale for example. No console/mobile ports. Very little merchandise. No public appearances. Toby Fox is probably set for life, but if he did these things he'd have at least 10-20 times as much money, and could open a big studio and make all the games he wants for the rest of his life regardless if they're successes or not.

Just a heads up for anyone thinking about giving GM2 a go: You can't have multiple step events in an object anymore, any code you want to execute in a step event for that object has to be in a single code block on a single step event.
Pretty much useless for any sort of serious project, I'd say.

I'm a recluse.
I've grown up around people who have serious mental health issues. And whenever I was in groups of people I always disliked speaking to people.
I lost my fear of speaking in big crowds though because I had to do it a lot at one point, so that's good I guess.
I'm only ever happy when I'm alone. The tragic irony is that I have to live with other people right now.

No I'm serious dude. I really do not want to even be around women. I'm totally fine with them doing what they want, so long as it aint around me. I used to be really into women but not anymore. I may still be sexually attracted to them, but I just don't like speaking to them. I feel like I come off as a jerk to them when I do have to speak to them; it's unintentional though. The sad thing is once I stopped being interested in them a few of them started dropping hints that they wanted to hang out with me.
That's how bullshit life is, I'm afraid. But that's the way things are.

does anyone know if its possible to do vertex blending in Blender or some other program, then import it into Unity? Or do you have to write your own code for that? If so, are there any tutorials on making your own vertex blending in Unity?

Asking because the asset store vertex-blending stuff is too expensive, and I've done too much of my project already to switch engines.

It works, but the whole point of using the multiple step events is that it makes it much easier to organize your shit with GM's interface style. Having to make a bunch of scripts for every object and open them all up in the GUI is a huge fuckaround.
At this point, the ergonomics of the new room and tiling stuff are pretty much cancelled out by the clusterfuck that is the the new workflow for scripting.

Is implementing a crafting grid too Minecrafty? I imagine there are other games out there that use grids but I imagine it'd get compared most often to Minecraft.

I prefer Minecraft's method over games like 7DtD and ARK where you have to find or unlock blueprints, as I feel it encourages players to experiment with item combinations.

What systems do you prefer for crafting/cooking? Blueprints where you just have to have the required items, crafting grids, or something else?
>>
>>172037163
Yes you can do vertex painting in Blender. Then you make a shader to blend between however many textures in Unity.

I like the Terraria way of doing crafting. Also the NPC that tells you what the items are used for is pretty good.
I feel mineraft's way of doing crafting is pretty limited and you'd need a lot of different interfaces if you want to do complex crafts, just look at the mess of minecraft mods GUI

That's very true. Okay, so maybe grid isn't the way to go.

So perhaps a good method would be to just having specific stations (cooking, woodworking, etc.) that just show a list of things that you can make, based on what's in your inventory? I'm pretty sure that's how console Minecraft wound up doing it anyway.

Yes that's the way Terraria is doing it too. It shows you a list of what you can craft based on what crafting stations are near you. So if you have a furnace and a crafting table you can access both at the same time.
Make sure it's easy to selected what you want to craft and make it easy to find what's used for what.

>I prefer Minecraft's method over games like 7DtD and ARK where you have to find or unlock blueprints, as I feel it encourages players to experiment with item combinations.

Neither style is fun to be honest.
With a grid you're constantly alt tabbing to work out what you need to do and with blueprints it's just one more part of the game progression that's reliant on RNG drops and looting.
Also, nobody actually bothers to experiment with combinations.

If you want to do discovery crafting, for the love of god have a UI that has all your discovered recipes in a clear, sensibly organized and visually appealing layout. The only thing worse than alt-tabbing is having to pick your way through some spergy menu system with dozens and dozens of unwanted recipes clogging shit up.

The only "crafting" system I enjoyed was the spellmaking system in the earlier Elder Scrolls game.

As you learned spells throughout the game you learned their effects, so you could combine those effects to create new interesting spells.

But this would require a systemization of the crafting system, and a lot of balancing tests so you can't exploit the system to create nonsensical overpowered items
