/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy, Gone Home, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

Though Dust is forgiven for being relatively old game, and not many games do this today anyway

Back then the indie genre was still in that transition phase between being relatively small-time and being the bigger bloated market it is now, so while Braid and Meat Boy and all that were huge and doing well, the scene was still "small" and thus more close-knit. It's natural in a smaller sort of "community" that collabs and references between different creators happen, thus stuff like that in Dust or other games.

It still happens now and then today with stuff like Shovel Knight, but in general it's become its own actual industry rather than a community, so you either don't or can't get the same kind of stuff put in games.

Some of them start you with an item, and the ones that don't (like today's, where you get a couple of bomb things and Pyromaniac) often have a simple theme.

Dust was originally going to be released on the 360's channel specifically for indie games, but it won a contest in 2009 and got the right to be published on Live Arcade via MS. The guy also self-published it on the PS4. So Dust isn't really a game with a publisher so much as a distributor on certain platforms and only because it won an award.

It's a coming of age ritual. When someone aspiring to be a scavenger becomes old enough, their station will send them out to hunt the mythical mutant with two heads. Upon completing this spiritual journey, they are welcomed back into their community as adults.

This tradition is generally frowned upon in the North, where sending potentially productive young members of society on a "fool's errand" is considered "barbaric" and "utterly derailed".

I played it a bit.

Balance seems kind of bad at first but I didn't really look around much. Seems to be based more off of Kittens than Civ, and with it has the same problem Kittens has with "well this is fucking useless I just wasted all my resources", but with the addition of from-the-start decreasing happiness and health.

Plus food rots, so it's even worse.

It is excellent for its time and holds up. It is the only zelda game before botw that was actually open world but with that combined with NES era comes some design flaws that don't hold up. It's still fun but I personally used a guide to see the next dungeon and get an idea of the dungeon layouts for my first playthrough.
Surprisingly, Zelda 2 holds up much better these days. Yes it is hard but nothing you are required a guide for.
Still hoping there will be a new zelda with heavier rpg elements zelda 2 had.

You have combat but also puzzle solving and exploring. Dark Souls has the exploring and combat but lacks puzzles for example.The genre of metroidvania fits very well into zelda too. I found it more accessible than Fallout. You can't get too lost early on, the interface is intuitive, and you aren't hit with massive walls of text or purple prose.

You will want note pad open to take note of quest objectives and details since your journal isn't useful. Also make note of points of interest and their central location.
Also increase game speed in the options cause walking and combat animations are slow.

You don't have to do the last few things but you might wander around for a bit if your memory isn't that good.

Yeah, it's cool as shit. As a kid I always loved when in X-Men comics telepaths put force fields around bombs, it's fucking badass.

Shame about the train though, although this trick wouldn't work even if the insta-death by exploding the whole map wasn't scripted. In order to fully contain the explosion, the force field needs to surround the bomb from all sides. And since the bomb is right next to the train, you wouldn't be able to stop that shit from going kaboom anyway. It would be cool if it were possible, but ah well.

Well in the first world you just pushed sausages around, but in the second world it introduces the concepts of walls/blockades. Walls and blockades make it complicated to move around because you have to accomodate for turning. And from that comes the idea of pushing a sausage against a wall to stab it with your fork and pick it up.

It was a long time ago but I remember the timing being tricky. It's important to jump out of the vent and plant the TNT in just the right moment, then start running through the ventilation to the vent near the cells. Took me a lot of tries.

He was working on it alone for 3 years, in that time he made the engine, premise of the story, combat system etc. and all the content up to Junkyard.

He was drawing everything in fucking paint until he got enough money to hire some freelancers. When he got even more money he started hiring people to work on the game fulltime. Stygian Software has like 7 devs right now, all working on the expansion, the last one joined in march last year if I remember correctly.

There is no way they will lose the will to finish the expansion, too much work has been already done and there are too many people involved. It's not just an ordinary hobby project anymore.

Candia did only the cover art, Culler the OST, Mayer made some, but not all of the portraits (I once looked her up, but her usual style is a bit different from what she used for this game, so it's not always easy to tell which portraits are hers), Wowk I don't know, maybe he was the first freelancer who made the first batch of NPC and creature sprites.

I would like to blogpost about a recent bullet hell run I had in which I ran out of ammo for all my guns, accidentally uncovered the secret room with the gun muncher in and got Gunther out of it, of all things. Then just barely managed to level it to two before fighting the lich and the final kill levelled it up to level 3 so I got a neat screenshot out of the deal

I don't think any other gun would have ended in a successful run at that point, I had like 5hp left so no sword beams and nothing else to shoot with

I've only done a few missions, but it's fun. It seems to not have that much magic. You can't recruit any mages, but there are "greenskins" and undead in the game. You only seem to be able to recruit guys, so you can't raise an army of waifus. +The environment actually feels alive
+Slugcat is cute
+I'm enjoying the exploration and oddity
- The controls feel like ass and the character feels like a majestic ferret piloting a war tank.
- The rain seems to come randomly and stupidly quickly sometimes, with heavy rain hitting in the only route to safety, meaning you auto-lose if you spend more than a few seconds idle and/or too far from shelter/with less than a full belly
I'm definitely not refunding tho. This has me interested.

This is an interesting game-mechanical point.
There are always spergbeards who will chant that any game---no matter how perversely difficult---gets unwarranted criticism, but there is such a thing as "too challenging". If not too challenging for the average skill-level of the preferred target group, then too challenging for many enough all over, so that the game loses out on sales because of it.
Bottom line, a game can be "bad" in several ways, and one of the objective measures of it is the financial-stratetical way, I suppose.

I can very well see that Rain World is too hard. The only thing is, people have this aversion towards criticizing games this way, for fear of others seeing them as poos in skill.

I always thought that there's two different kinds of "hard". There's the kind that is skill-based and balanced. It's challenging, maybe even grueling, but it's still fair. There's also the kind that's reliant on cheating the player, stuff like unfair required precision and timing, randomly-spawning swarms of enemies, deliberate shitty mechanics and controls just to hinder the player, overly-harsh punishments for failure, etc.

Basically it's the difference between overcoming a challenge and feeling accomplished and good and overcoming a challenge and feeling aggravated and angry.

Like, Dark Souls. The good kind is throwing yourself at a boss over and over before finally beating them thanks to your acquisition of skill and knowledge. The bad kind is fucking up a jump during a certain boss over and over and having to run all the way back to the place from the last bonfire just to try again.

You can feel it too, whenever something's gruelling but you know -you're- the reason you can't do it, and not the controls, or randomly occurring events.

In Hollow Knight there's this place called the White Palace; a horrifying huge level of Super Meat Boy-level platforming. Even though it was soul-harrowing and I spent a lot of time there, there always was this adrenaline-rushed exhilarating sense of excitement, despite the frustration. All because the controls are very tight, and the levels have no random/arbitrary segments. It's a good feel, even when you can't beat it, at least for me.
(Then again, I'm a Dwarf Fortress fanatic, so maybe I'm screwed up)

Dark Souls is a really good example, yeah


Now, the tedium part of games is another matter, I think.. People confuse tedium with difficulty sometimes, but I think it's more a matter of poor game-mechanical design. (There is, after all, ZERO reason to have huge tedium/punishment for failing at something challenging in a game. It doesn't lead to people mastering it faster or anything. All it leads to is more frustration and time spent.)

I had that feel with Rodina, holy shit..
Fantastic core principle: complex fps space-sim with simplistic design and graphics allowing for immensely comprehensive ship-building/-customization, physics, crafting and whatnot. (Simple graphics doesn't detract at all. On the contrary, actually, since it rather lowers the threshold for suspension of disbelief.)

Suffice to say, the dev has now obviously turned out to be a damn rube (at least most likely); trying to pander to people outside the target demographic for such a game by speed-implementing small casual and "cool" features which ultimately lessens the feel of the game.
(When he could rather continue expanding and building on the core features, listening to feedback and whatnot.)

I remember being absolutely blown away by LEGO Worlds' trailer and engine at first. Well.. You see the signs all over it now, of the devs' misbegotten sense of target demographic.. Minecraft wasn't made with kids in mind, after all, and it still proved a success with them.
God damnit, I feel like LEGO Worlds had such potential..
Maybe it still has, though. (Some months back I wrote a 2500 word design document providing game-mechanical breakdown of sandbox-type games, and various ways this could be incorporated with the engine. Absolutely autist-mode, let me tell you. Still felt a bit of closure though hehe)

Well-... I-.. I suppose I raged out a little. Yeah he's trudging along with ship designs, which is nice. Also, the combat thing presupposed a lot of work on the player/entity parts of the engine, which is cool.
I just feel/fear that that he doesn't have what it takes to look through feedback properly, realize what would good for the game and what won't, etc.
Ultimately, I fear that he won't make Rodina generic enough. I.e. that he'll sacrifice modularity and-.. "sandbox-ness" and complexity for the sake of small, really specific gameplay features that he thinks is cool.

You know how you can sort of sense in devs whether they are really talented/intelligent or not, by profiling them a bit, sort of? I just have this very bad feeling that Rodina's dev doesn't have what it takes to make a "space-Minecraft"/"Freelancercraft", sadly.

Games usually mix up together things under player's control (skill-based play) with things player has no impact on (e.g. random elements) to even the playing field and make audience wider. There's no right or wrong combination of these, although devs should strive to hit widest audience possible if they're making a game for wide audience (which is usually the cause). Obviously the extremes on the skill vs. luck scale are the least popular games (most people in this thread probably never play pure luck/pure skill based games at all).

Same goes for tedium, not being able to progress until you're good enough is a common mechanic in video games. Being taken to a different degree is a different kind of challenge, there's no right or wrong here, but there is some kind of average/general audience kind of thing for this. And extremes are unpopular, as usual, but still have their market/audience.

I'd assume that IGN/Polygon write this from a position of an average consumer, but then I recall that these are just glorified marketing websites that are full of hacks that don't like or even play videogames, so they don't fall under "average consumer"

Space Funeral is one of my favorite games and IMO the fan games are utter shit. they completely miss the point while replacing any of it's charm with random, obnoxious referential humor. the only one even kind of okay is 2 and even that annoys me to a significant degree. Dracula was a small but memorable part of the first game. 2 took his only character trait (he smokes weed) and flanderized the fuck out of it, so now you run into him in Jamaica with a bunch of rastafarians and he makes jokes about the munchies and eventually you smoke weed with him and get transported into the generic rainbow covered drug trip level on a quest for a big doobie. like >>172235278 said, the fan sequels take the most memorable aspects of the original and reference them ad nausium while leaving behind the underlying charm. 4 literally offends me, between the ruined graphics and lol Bubsy is trans lol epic Dr. Genki xD
