Just got ending B for Gestalt. I'm kinda confused though. If the shades are the twisted distorted fucked up humans that were corrupted and didn't survive the Gestalt program, why should I feel so bad for killing them? I know all the scenes in NG+ give them character and make you feel bad for killing them but they aren't really humans anymore.

I'm not even sure "Taro game" means anything at all. He has stated many times before he doesn't like doing the same thing over and over so he would probably reject any labels such as that. Every game he has made is very different from the previous. Very different tone, different narrative approach, different character treatment, different scope, different themes...

If anything, a Yoko Taro game is a game full of creativity and love put into it. A game made by someone who tries to go beyond what's been done before, and regardless of the result being better or worse, at least it can say something very few can say, it's new and unique. And I think Automata is that and much more.

Like that moment in the beginning of route B where you play as the little robot. They are not even related to the story per se but the short moment still draws connections to everything and does weird things to the player.

Yeah but Grimoire Weiss and Noir attempt to fuse in the mid point of the game to return all Gestalts to their respective Replicants. Popola and Devola still function as observers as well.

Some shades can become berserker but most of them are just fighting back because you killed the rest of them. See: Mother Goose,

to clarify the new FAR fix that "DrDaxxy" came up with lets you either turn off or lower the Global Illumination method Platinum used for the game.

It can increase your FPS by up tto 60% AT 4k resolution with very minimal loss of quality turned off, or damn near no loss of quality turned down from 128 samples to 16.

What this means is that Platinum Games didn't give PC players an option to more than double their frame rates in some situations, on literally any PC build. Nor did they optimize the shader on console(it's also 128 samples on PS4) and this is why the game runs poorly despite looking pretty damn bad.

Yeah that's the only way I can see anything good happening, is fusing the gestalts back with their replicants which can't happen unless you ending D yourself because you always start past that point. Some of the documents in the game I think made it seem like replicants might not be able to fuse with shades. On consoles it basically never held 60fps when you were in combat and Xbox had better performance.

Platinum knows how to make a flashy fun game but they don't know how to optimize them. This Nier GI thing really goes to show that since the person who fixed it didn't even know what global illumination is.

I understood the character and story development as well but it's just not my cup of tea and I say that as a surprise.
I liked Automata but every important story bit after 2B just didn't click with me. The original route was perfect to me and everything after just failed to surpass that ending.

I'm still trying to figure out why Taro likes to reuse the symbolism of the watcher cult at this point. On one hand I am inclined to think it's just that, symbolism/visual storytelling. On the other there's just so much that's evidently presented (Eve's transformation, the network one word away of saying legion and even refenced in the artbook, red eyes, the celestial alphabet) and knowing taro DOES often tie stuff together, I'd be curious to know what are his thoughts at least behind his obsession with that.

Maybe it's just his way of showing a loss of sense of self, or like the "biggest evil achievable" in his games

I haven't played the original Nier or Drakengard, but Automata hit absolutely everything I like. From each individual design decision on 2B, to the overarching story themes of robots, androids, existentialism and general bleak mood, the PlatinumGames combat system, the amazing soundtrack and even how well it utilizes video games as media. Is there anything at all with similar themes at least? Be it an anime, book or movie. I want to play the other games from Taro, but reading about them doesn't look like they come close to hitting all of my tastes like Automata did. The setting is really just perfect for me.

A lot of the moments in this game that made me tear up or go "OH SHIT" came from previous game references.
Like when "Kainé's salvation" starts playing in the cave below the shopping mall, you realize that that is Kainé's shack right there, and realize the significance of her rebuilding her shack near a field of Lunar Tears. She really wanted her wish to come through to remember what she forgot that day.
Or seeing the cathedral and library in the tower, both DoD and NieR throwbacks.

I could tell how most of those were throwbacks for the other games because of how obvious they were, even without having played them and only reading and watching some general summaries. I would certainly have enjoyed it more if I did play the other games, but I don't regret it. I still love just about everything on Automata on its own, and I think it can stand on its own.
