I don't get why Rogue isn't recommended more. I am assuming just because it isn't actively in development and if you want to play on a modern system you have to play a fan port, but I don't see how that is a big deal but whatever.

Playing it really takes the learning curve out of the genre (the game itself is quite simpler will still having all key mechanics) and it still holds up to this day.

In the future, consider picking up Silence for tomb

The best way to prevent torment and infinite summons and smite and more mummies hearing you and showing up to fight is to just silence all the dead bastards
>>
>>171780325
Rolling. I better not regret this shit.
>>
>>171789872
Fuck me, I'm dumb. I thought mummies were not affected by Silence, kinda like demons. Fucking hell that would have made this whole mess so much easier. Honestly tho, do they have to summon infinite fucking emperor scorpions? I can deal with the constant torments, but the scorpions are hella annoying to deal with.
>>
>>171788565
How to clear Tomb as a TSO follower:

0) Get Invo to decently high level.
1) Summon Divine Warriors all the fucking time
2) Spam Cleansing Flame when the biggest baddies are near
3) Stairdance when tons of torment users are on screen
4) Switch to Zin and Vitalization/Recite/Imprison everything

But yeah, Tomb is always nerve-wracking -- and yet, if you don't really care about saving time, it's probably the most "beatable" extended branch besides Slime/Abyss.

I am actually gonna go Zin for Pandemonium because I fucking hate everything but I decided to switch things round and go TSO for Tomb since I've never done it before (only managed a 5 rune before and TSO seemed like a decent thing because of cleansing flame). Everything right now feels like popcorn except for when the mummies get the scorpion horde rolling and just hiding like cunts tormenting from the back
>>
in cdda i threw down grenades and blew my own legs off in a last ditch effort to survive, and it killed all of the zombies but my legs got blown off but i survived somehow? what do i do from here?
>>
>>171790873
>and yet, if you don't really care about saving time, it's probably the most "beatable" extended branch besides Slime/Abyss.

This

With enough stairdancing, silence, aura of abjuration, and something decently killy like dispel undead or just tabdudes, you could definitely do tomb for a 3rd rune. Having Zin/TSO/Kiku/Statueform all helps make sure you don't get instaboned by a bad torment/smite sequence, but the reason I avoid tomb is because it's fucking tedious to play optimally there but unlike the hells, you don't get to go fast- only slow.
>>
>>171790873
btw, do you have any tips for Hell, other than 27invo Zin mash recite? How do I deal with Ereshkigal, Shard Shrikes and everything in Tartarus?

Is PCBR's device decursing supposed to be 100% ? I read quite a few scrolls and they didn't remove it.
>>
>>171791161
turncount literally doesnt matter at all unless youre going for speedrun records
>>
>>171792252
Are you sure you didnt fail to pronounce it correctly? Or maybe its an ancient foul curse?
>>
>>171791481
For Zin, Imprison is AMAZING in the right moments. If you stumble upon a torment-user or two who you can't (or don't want to) deal with right away, Imprison allows you to shut them down -- or in the simplest sense, close the gap between you and them until they're free.

For Ereshkigal, hope you get a lucky recitation. If not, be sure to go fast: buff yourself up before getting to her room, and either smash her face in quickly or find the rune and run. Imprison might be helpful for the latter choice.

>>

I don't know about allies (the situations where I'd be both shouting and also summoning aren't frequent) but acquiring mp isn't a big issue now that I have the 4th book's focus rage ability. It's like a really goofy craft mage who buffs before/throughout battle.

sidenote: ragestrike gives me heavy stun status, so it appears mostly useless for consistent use
>>
>>171799157
ragestrike does not stun you if you are currently berserk
actually quite a lot of ragemage shit becomes better while berserk
the two summon spells summon hasted dudes
spell turning jumps from 35% to 50% chance
armor of fury's debuffs last 3 turns instead of 1 on enemies
the sp you gain from damaging enemies is pretty significantly increased
focus *rage* goes from 60hp/120sp to 100hp/200sp
spell turning has its saving throw bonus doubled from 20 to 40

and some other shit as well

Atomic lamp is the most convenient, though it and the recipe are rare. Gasoline lantern isn't bad either, at least in town where fuel is everywhere.

You can also build a "vehicle" underground and either use an engine + alternator or charge batteries on the surface and swap them into your machine. The lights on the controls are bright enough to read by if you stand on top of them, and use far less power than headlights.

I am not actually sure. So far I was thinking of giving them amulet slot ( sort of wrapped around the hilt ) so you can fix up some early-game resistances, and perhaps allowing them to learn abilities like rings, even though they are bit rarer. Maybe look into values of the essences and whatnot.
I'll see into how I am gonna balance them. Currently doing a playthrough and seeing how they fare.

It's funny, I was thinking what one could do about death swords since they're basically all I play and besides giving them greater speed boosts on evolving this is what I came up with too.

Is PCB the logical conclusion of Moria/*bands? There is just so much stuff in PCB I just don't see how you could take it and create a new *band based off of PCB.

the AI in Sil is sort of smart, they will refuse to enter hallways and instead try to gank you in open rooms and surround you or send a detachment to block off the other end of the hallway to prevent you from fleeing. You are also standing right next to a staircase, and new enemies come into the floor your on through both up and down stairways. uniques on the first few floors will come with a posse of generic orcs that are dangerous since they can flank and trap you.

While Sil is about the heroic slaying of monsters, its also about knowing when to run away from monsters that are too tough to fight. Some monsters like wraiths or sword spiders will "not deign to pursue you" and will stop coming after you when your out of their line of sight. If the enemies present on your depth are too deadly, you can always go back up the stairs to try and get new loot, generate a new level with different enemies, or more xp, as long as your not at the minimum depth

Regarding the deathsword changes for R ( I am probably gonna push them for old version before I work them for new one ).
Disenchantment no more directly drains the to_dam/to_hit, but instead drains essences.

This was in game, but it was more rough and called less often ( it was called with 50% when the dispelling effect triggered ), and drained some 5% - 20% from ALL essences - depending on rank.

Currently what I am thinking is that if save is failed against disenchantment, a single essence is picked ( heavy focus on to_hit / to_acc / to_ac ), and then drained. Bit heftier, but capped the a value defined by level.
Some rare essences are protected from the fate, like speed, etc.

I'll probably copy it over ring, too.

>>171831437

>>
>>171831437
Probably not, frankly. At the moment I am gonna keep it weapons-only, although I am gonna adjust the values required for those resistances.

Plus I was perhaps thinking of allowing some more abilities to spice up otherwise pretty simple gameplay. Not sure what yet.
>>
>>171831540
Nah, way too powerful.
>>
>>171831437
Anyway, the current deathsword changes were pushed.
What was changed:
>Deathsword bodies can now equip amulets.
>The amount of essences needed for sound / shards / disenchantment / sound was reduced ( 4->3 )
>Getting disenchanted was altetered. Instead of losing to-damage or to-hit, you lose essences.
>Base life was increased to 40 from 30.
>However, shop-multiplier was dropped from 110 to 100. Deathswords already swim in money just by the fact that they can sell almost every piece of non-weapon gear they find.

I still have some changes in mind ( ex. abilities ), but gonna do them later.

alright the Samurai's "Mosou-Sandan" power at 39 is pretty great.
It makes exactly 3 blows and each of them is a guaranteed crit and has doubled damage on top of that.
If you already have 5 or 6 blows it probably ain't great, but if you wield a heavy as fuck weapon that has big dice but only gives you few blows, this power becomes amazing.

I only have ~200 damage/round with the Mattock of Kazad-Dum but with this power i seem to be doing more than 700 damage in a turn.

Didn't you used to be able to break both of those and get materials without an explosion?
>>
Turns out you can't disassemble them.
Well, apparently someone on the forums thought this was pretty funny then
doesn't explain why the terrain says something else though
>>
Turns out there's two terrains: Missle (221) and "blown out missle (220).

Breaking the blown-out missle gives scrap metal.
Breaking the missle gives a nuclear explosion.
They both can't be disassembled.

I pressed * and checked, but the "disassemble furniture" option wasn't lit up. I had an integrated toolset too, so it wasn't like I was just missing the tools either. Besides, terrain.h says that it can't be dismantled.

I brought an electric jackhammer with me in case the sledgehammer wasn't enough, but trying to use it just gave me a message to the effect of "you can't drill that!"
>>
>>171859580
Missiles (along with fuel pumps and generators and atms for some reason) have the explosive field set in the jsons.

Presumably they do drop plutonium but the explosion destroys it anyway.
>>
Oh I see what happens!
Breaking the missle does generate plutionium.
It also as you can see, creates a "explosion" field with a value of 100, which destroys the cells! (and kills you).

Looks like it's yet another silly implementation.
Let's see if I get the plutonium cells if I delete the explosion field

So what would be the stat distribution in DDA if I have 4 points left? I was thinking either putting everything to 9 or increasing strength and dexterity to 9, intelligence to 10 and leaving perception to 8.

I was thinking that maybe I could take more bad traits, right now I have addictive personality, lightweight, heavy sleeper, poor hearing, ugly and truth teller, and my good traits are robust genetics, quick, night vision and self-defense classes.

>addictive personality, lightweight
Hope you know what you're doing. Booze is a really good morale booster, and Addictive Personality means that you can't have more than 2 drinks per day without experiencing withdrawal. For that matter, Adderjall becomes very hard to use, since more than ~8 pills over three days is enough to give a character without Addictive Personality some pretty heavy, if short-lived, withdrawal consequences.

Combined with Lightweight, you get addictions really quickly, and their maluses stick around for longer.
>heavy sleeper, poor hearing, ugly and truth teller
Sans Ugly, those are pretty good choices. Trigger-Happy, High Thirst, and Sleepy are also good, if you're looking for some more points.
>night vision
High Perception accomplishes the same thing, but it stacks so your choice. I find this to be a convenience, rather than powerful: if you can see a zombie with your nightvision, it's close enough to track you through scent and sound, so it's not like this allows you to pick fights or avoid them any better.
>self-defense classes
Literally just find a dojo. If you're going to spend points on martial arts, there are better traits for it than that.

As for your stats: Intelligence is important for crafting, which is very powerful, and Strength allows you to do more damage, carry more things, break more stuff, and drag around heavier objects, so they're both very good. Perception allows you to spot traps, be more accurate at a distance and see farther in the dark, all of which are important. Dex raises your accuracy (ranged and melee) by a little, makes crafting go a little faster, and lets you dodge better. I wouldn't dump it, but raising it has fewer benefits than raising other stats.

Not sure how many points multipool gives you because I never use it, but Str=Int>Per>Dex should be fine. Don't go over 14 though, that's just wasteful

Huh Samurai gets a stance at level 40 that gives the same bonuses as Ultimate Resistance, plus it halves all incoming damage on top of that. And it only costs 2sp per turn.

Would be pretty ridiculous except: it is canceled if you do anything including moving or attacking. you can only mash wait and do damage through retaliation

>>
>>171868595
Oh, I forgot that high perception gives you the same effect as night vision, does it start at 10 or does it have to be higher? if it starts at 10 I guess I could just drop night vision. I don't usually use drugs, usually only when I have to do something important like installing a CBM, I also read in the pasta that they don't have a huge effect anyway, but since it's outdated it's probably wrong.

In fact, all the traits I picked are actually from the tl;dr section in the pasta.

I picked self-defense classes because in the pasta and the forums I read that Krav Maga is a really strong style, and as far as I know a dojo isn't guaranteed to have it.

So, for stats, I was thinking, if I removed night vision I could put 10 in per and get both the benefits of night vision(if it starts at 10) and higher per, since you said dex isn't that important I think I'm gonna leave it at 8, I could then make increase strength and intelligence to 10.

I'm not sure how much stats matter provided you keep them in the normal-ish range. Intelligence is mostly convenience so it doesn't take forever to read books and botch crafts.

>>171868595
>addictive personality
I guess it depends on how you play. I think the only time I've ever had an addiction was keeping my dude up for days reading on caffeine pills.

Just take gourmand if you want to shove everything into your gluttonous maw for huge morale.

The glasses traits are basically free points. I'm not sure I've ever had a pair damaged by a monster hitting me. If that weren't free enough, you can literally remove them late game with a bionic. You can even take both for maximum cheese.

>>
>>171870849
>destruct all his loot
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
>>
>>171873687
yeah the strength and the radius are directly related. there's no such thing as a very intense but small radius light, or a very low but large radius light in sil.
>>
>>171873687
It's a separate stat. For example there's some will talent that increases your light strength by 1 without increasing radius, and you can also increase light strength by dropping glowy things at your feet. One feanorian lamp in your hands and one on the ground below = 2x as much STRONK
>>
oh yeah also: normal torches lanterns go out when you drop them, so you need to drop permanent lights like jewels or feanorian lamps

or weapons that are glowing in the presence of an enemy
>>
>>171873687
Look at your character sheet. Your darkness resistance is equal to your light radius minus one (unless you have Inner Light, which grants one pip of light resistance).

Dropping bright items at your feet does not increase your darkness resistance though.

Change Log for the Next Build
Posted by Herbie on March 22, 2017

Something to read while I clean up the last bits and do final testing. :)

New Feature: The Upper Reaches Of The Tower
- Three new floors have been added to the Tower, bringing
it to a total of 23 floors, not including the other realms
it contains portals to.
- The new floors contain demons unlike any seen before,
wielding powers of strength unheard of before their
appearance.
- Among the new cadre are a few figures of note: two
demons capable of forming Sanctums, a morose looking Hero,
and a bold, cunning, and quite deadly Summoner with no
tolerance for rivals.
- The appearance of the new floors has also had significant
impacts on the previously existing floors: reports indicate
many demons dwelling in floors 11 to 20 have developed new
abilities.
- Further more, several entirely new demons have been sighted
on the lowest floors, including one capable of creating a
Sanctum.
- All in all, over 20 new demons and over 170 new abilities
can now be found within the Tower (and in the realms it
has connections to...)

New Feature: Attenutated Attacks
- Many area effect attacks now have the Attenuated modifier.
This is shown in tooltips in the ability's main description,
such as "Attenuated 70 Power attack."
- Attenuation has two main effects: it reduces the damage
dealt and the chance of applying status effects for
targets not caught in the focal point of the blast. The
further away from the focal point, the further from the
reduction.
- Attenuation also allows Agility, Block, Dodge, and effects
that improve evasion to further reduce the damage or even
avoid the effect entirely! The effectiveness of these
defenses also depends on the distance from the focal point:
the further the better, and they won't work at all if you're
right in the focal point.
- The UI will show attenuation by fading out cells when
aiming an area effect ability: the more faded the cell, the
less effect the ability is going to have.
- What is the focal point of a given area effect? For lines
and cones, it will be the affected spaces adjacent to the
caster. For sphereical effects, it will be the center.
- Needless to say, several demons, starting character packages,
and modifiers have been changed based on this.

New Feature: Hybrid Modifiers
- Elemental energy has arced through the Tower, causing some
demons to change in new and unexpected ways.
- Nine new random demon modifiers have been added that grant
Fire, Ice, and Electricity powers geared towards melee use
to those who receive them, including hybrid physical attacks
that include these types.
- Some demons now also naturally pass these modifiers on
when used in Demon Fusion.
>>
Corpses
- The player now always acts first after triggering the
appearance of enemies from a corpse.
- Corpses never spawn unusually high level demons anymore.
After all, if the summoner who left the corpse had been able
to tame such foes, perhaps they'd not have died?
- Reduced the number of demons that appear in corpse
encounters by 1.
- Corpses will never spawn Relic Wraiths when searched by
very, very low level summoners who have less than three
allies of their own.

Dungeon
- Despite this build using a new scoring version, ghosts from
the 12/11/2016 scoring model can still be found within the
Tower. This is probably the only time during alpha or
beta that this sort of ghost carryover will occur. It is
certainly the only time I will promise to do it, because
it turns out this is a pain in the neck for a game still
in very active development.
- A couple of encounters on Tower:1 have been slightly
reduced in difficulty.

Balance
- Being weak to an element now increases damage and chances
of status effects by 25%, reduced from 33% and 50%.
Weaknesses are now worth slightly less bonus HP as a result.
- Damage randomization has been almost entirely removed.
The only randomization present is a chance for fractional
damage to resolve as a +1 instead. For example: 4.3
damage will resolve as 4 damage 70% of the time, and 5
damage 30% of the time.
- Reduced damage dealt by attacks by about 8%.
- Breath weapons are now much cheaper in terms of SP cost
and cooldown, but now use % of SP instead of raw SP,
meaningless Tireless can no longer be used to "overclock"
them.
>>
>>171879920
Pretty sure you can safely take more than that. I remember using two adrenaline shots plus some other drugs before, but I think they nerfed adrenaline at some point.
>>
- Cone effects now are shaped a bit more like cones and less
like wedges.
- Did a significant balance pass on Presence abilities,
resulting in most of them now having significantly reduced
cooldowns, and slightly adjusted (some up, some down) SP
costs.
- Charisma is now a cooldown reduction instead of increased
cooldown recovery.
- Bravado now resets your Presence cooldown whenever you are
attacked and left with less than half your HP.
- When an enemy summoner is defeated, his inactive demons are
now always put to Sleep, regardless of Mind resistance,
and have Ignite and Poison removed. This is intended to
give the player at least one fair shot at a demon of their
choice, if they went to the trouble of keeping it alive
during the battle.
- All SP removal/drain effects used on enemies are now %
based. Granted, before this build, there weren't many any
way, but still worth noting.
- Reduced the SP cost and Power of the Life Siphon, Life
Drain, Vigor Siphon, and Vigor Drain abilities.
- Reduced the discount Ritualist provides, but made that
discount trigger on more abilities.
- Gluttony now also affects SP draining.
- Mending now has a lower SP cost, and the Mended status
it applies has a shorter duration.
- All damaging attacks now do at least 1 damage unless the
target is outright Immune to the damage type involved.
- Drop Bears are now slightly more patient with summoners
attempting to recruit them.
- Reduced the SP costs of "battle cry" buffs a bit.
- Increased the SP cost of most "movement attack" abilities
that don't have cooldowns.
- Haunt now only attempts 1 turn delay instead of 2, and
has had its casting cost and cooldown adjusted accordingly.

Gameplay
- The Eye of the Dragon has a new Dark primary starting
option.
- The Faithful Heart has a new Fire primary starting option.
>>
UI
- The warnings received for having a party member at low
HP while Poisoned/Ignited are now much more accurate:
you will only receive warnings if a character would die
in 4 or less turns as its current rate of damage/turn.
- These warnings can also be argued with a bit more easily:
attempting any 'auto' action such as resting, exploring,
or quick travel will proceed 1 step before stopping and
re-warning you, rather than sometimes not letting you use
these features at all.
- Quick Summon and Quick Dismiss allow you to do a normal
Summon or Dismiss on the same turn you did a Quick Summon
or Quick Dismiss. This is probably a bit overpowered, but
the user experience was so obnoxious I'm willing to live
with it until the next pass on Upgrades.
- Demon now gives the full path of Record files whenever
they are generated, to make them easier to find.
- Made it much harder to miss when Panic, Paralysis, and
Charm cause the player to lose actions or have those
actions changed.
- Relic Wraiths now give their ID number when you look at
their descriptions in their character sheets, which may
come in handy for debugging / telling multiple wraiths of
the same name apart.
- Cleaned up wording on "half accuracy" abilities like
Clobber and Eat Alive.

AI
- The AI's evaluation of area effects has been improved.
The AI now considers additional factors such as the
resistance/immunity of potential targets, whether or
not it feels a higher target count may be available next
turn, how 'conditional' the ability is, and other factors
when deciding when to use area effects.
- Characters now pay heed to whether or not they can already
reach all of their enemies with all of their attacks when
deciding whether or not to move and in general are much
more reluctant to move when there is no need to.
>>
- Enemy summoners are now very reluctant to give melee-range
abilities to demons that do not already have them.
- The penalty to evaluations for anticipated Blocks, Dodges,
Parries has been capped at 50% for each of these defenses:
a chance higher than this will not make the AI any more
reluctant to attack.
- The AI is considerably more reluctant to use "stagger"
effects when outnumbered, and considerably more eager to
use them when outnumbering their foes.
- The AI is now a bit more eager to remove Poison status
from allies.
- The AI now evaluates SP consumption somewhat better when
deciding what abilities to use and when.

Bug Fixes
- Fixed a bug where Quick Summon and Quick Dismiss could
sometimes fail, even when Paralyzed.
- Fixed a couple of typos in ability names, and a case of an
ability and modifier sharing the same name, which was
confusing.
- Fixed a bug where the wrong directory was being used for
Save and Record files, causing the game to be unplayable
due to permission settings on some sytems.
- Fixed a bug where some multi-hit abilities never attempted
their 2nd or later attacks if the first one missed.
- Cleaned up some minor, obscure bugs that may have prevented
some more esoteric abilities from properly triggering
special effects. (Example: Exorcism and Mien passives.)
- Fixed various typos in ability descriptions, most notably
Halo.

Morgoth's manastorms made him highly spooky this time, even with a full ranged wand setup. The ranged retaliation mechanics for PCB are kinda frustrating - any input on what the original logic was behind them? It seems like while free potshots on enemies is discouraged, the ranged options of most high-tier enemies are absolutely murderous (breaths, manastorms, summons) compared to melee attacks.

>>171890115
When I played you couldn't drop a backpack or other wearable container with all the stuff it carried. You had to drop every single item one at a time, taking an inordinate amount of time.
This meant that you were almost certainly fucked if meeting an hostile while wearing a pack.

Is that still the case?
>>
>>171891057
I mean, probably. I haven't played in a hot minute, but I highly doubt they made inventory container based rather than pure volume.

No, this requires an arsenal normally banned by the Geneva Conventions. These were all picked up pretty much over the course of normal play, though - all it takes is a few lucky vaults. Not pictured are two additional disint wands. Conceivably I could've taken on the Serpent in melee, but no sense in risking it with so many options.

>>171893547
Yes. Early game is complete hell because of AC penalties mainly - I'm sure there's something abuseable about the mana mechanics once you get the 3rd book, but the only reason I could hold onto melee later on was because of a great vamp weapon with bonus blows. Rage-mage is limited to 3 blows otherwise. The summons and buffs are about the only neat things unique to the class.

And what people won't realize is that I stealthly added a way to grind high-XP modifier characters without needing to grinding ancient dragons for years!
I'm an evil mastermind.

It's up to debate if the level should be caaws-tier for maximum stealthscum (what do you mean why should I drop the level? The Caaws is level 90!) or just make it something like 50 to be even more inconspicuous (and balanced) considering the most important thing is the FREEXP.
Which is really not that free to be honest considering they can cast invulnerabily barriers, self heal and stop you from using spells, not to mention they have truckloads of AC so that even archers would have trouble with killing one and even then they'd need to waste a lot of ammo unless they have a telekinesis rod!
I'm pretty sure you need disint (they resist shards so rockets is subpar) and other high tier wands to kill one of those. Of course an android might use his racial rocket launcher BUT ANDROIDS DON'T GAIN XP ON KILLS!

I'm going to attempt to diminish the quantity of grind needed to get to level 50 in PCB while at the same time making it somewhat balanced, by borrowing our friend from the good old times of 555, the Caaws. To the unexperienced this might be just another ordinary quest, quite interesting really, to wrest a shining stone from a Caaws' mouth. But! There's a but.

The real trickery is to give any @ the possibility to farm them for MAD expee, IF they have the means to take one of those down. And believe me they're worth that much for a pretty specific reason, they resist almost everything.

This means that any character (that would first of all need to have access to levitation to get to Zul) would first need to grab a lot of wands/rods/ to overcome the Caaws' natural resistance, which means they would be already at the point where they're farming ancient dragons (30+).

The problem is that there is a tragic gap between ancient dragons and arena wyrms where most high-xp modifiers characters tend to have to grind for hours over hours over hours just to get to the point where they can maul stuff from the mid-end game for their XP! This is boring.

Enter "The Nether Pearl". An option to reduce tedium, but still provide a challenge for the user, with no opportunity for scumming loot like 555 since (I forgot!) Caaws do not drop loot.

I'm gonna work on this right now.

It's true that they do resist every single basic player resistance, plus water/plasma/force/gravity, the mid-rare wands.
But nah, you could just spam your breathe ability at them. Really, it's not that hard to kill them, provided you're a breather.
Also you could simply get right out of their LOS and spam ball spells one tile away from them.

>>
>>171891057
Yes and no.
Containers are still modeled the same. A backpack doesn't actually contain its contents, it just adds to the abstract inventory volume number.
However, the specific problem you mention WAS fixed. Now, if you lose a container and have too many items in your inventory, some are automatically dropped as a free action. You don't get to choose which items are assumed to have been stored in the backpack you dropped, some of your inventory just arbitrarily tumbles to the ground.
You can also use most usable items from the ground, and reload weapons and tools using items on the ground, so even if the game drops parts of the inventory you need, it probably won't kill you.
>>
>>171929912

Well, yeah. Now that I think of it more deeply, probably not best way to do what I kinda intended.
What I wanted to do is that 2 disenchantment pips doesn't just completely negate weakness of the race ( much easier to achieve now with amulets ). Still less worse than original disenchantment.
I wanted to keep it as curveball, which is kinda dealable with at later levels.

I will look into values, though.
>>
>>171930418
You can pick items which you drop if you drop the backpack rather than losing it and pick the items to drop in the same action as dropping backpack.
>>
>>171929912
Are these changes always in the most recent Windows binary? I downloaded it to try it out and Death-swords didn't have an amulet slot.

Depends
A minimalistic one where you spend more time excusing your lack of programming skill than programming is easy. Just say it's "tight and clean design".

Handling bloated roguelikes is tough - updating PCB, which is made with more hacks than design choices, is an experience you'd wish on your enemy.
A lot of nu-DDA updates are just unfucking KA101 era copypasted code, copypasted jsons and giant blocks of hardcoded text.

Recursive fork maintainers and IA dev have came out of the closet on /rlg/.
Floatrand is quite recognizable with his "( astlyed parens )" style.
I know for a fact that there are more of us devs here.
>>
>>171941520
It's kind of extremely difficult, mostly because you're doing a (very low-res version of) something that even major games don't do: procedural generation.

That, combined with basic inventory creation, means it's going to take a while before the game is even playable, let alone halfway to whatever combat/progression/quest system you dream of it having.

Still, a lot of these problems become smaller if you allow yourself to just fork a game (which, technically, almost all major roguelikes have done).
>>
>>171944545
fork maintainin' doesn't count as programming a roguelike

is >>171944642 Floatrand
>>
>>171944642
It's not procedural generation which is hard, it's the skeleton of the game.

The biggest hurdle is getting to the point where you have a moving @ on arbitrarily sized screen, some non-@ on the same level, level transitions, basic UI and basic game logic in neat structured containers that don't require you to rewrite everything every time you add a feature.

It's the hardest because it is really boring but also really important.

Typical nu-dev goes like this:
>I want to make a roguelike with [gimmick] and heavy emphasis on [gimmick], it will have [gimmick] dragons using their AI to [affect] you
>OK, I got that @ on the screen
>OK, there is a D that moves towards @ and attacks
>holy fuck I hate this, every time I open up the IDE I hate myself for forcing myself to do that. I wanted to code dragon [gimmick] breath, not A* and raycasting
>d0d g0ym

>>171945334
>or does he just attention whore about updates and shill his game here
More this, but the point still stands.
Unless you're moving goalposts

>is >>171944642 Floatrand
I must have confused Floatrand for the other recursive fork maintainer then. I'm bad at names and out of the loop when it comes to PCB.
I mean not just (parentheses), but ( parentheses ), with spaces inside, like that padded style in some guidelines. That's rather characteristic.
>>
>>171945381
Compartmentalizing everything is the key.

I have some wretched, awful code in my own game, but it's hidden behind interfaces and is neatly self-contained, so adding features doesn't make me want to kill myself.

>>
>>171946984

It's the truth. It took me ages to get to a point where I could move around, kill some monsters, have LOS and basic AI working, and a win condition. I could've changed the order in which I did things to get there faster, but once you have that in place, if your code isn't awful, you've passed the point where your game collapses in on itself.

>>
>>171946662
Don't use Unity for a roguelike. You lose so much control over the inner workings, and it doesn't save you from programming proper things (pathfinding, raycasting). Instead you will have to work around Unity's solutions.

Monogame is good, as is SFML.net.
However, try to write it so that you can swap rendering if needed.

Judging from that, it's probably also full of 1k line functions, if/else ladders, direct field accesses and possibly even hardcoded logic for individual characters.

It's going to crash and burn pretty hard unless he slows down with the development just to clean this shit up. At certain density of hacks, adding another hack takes more time than untangling the whole mess.

>Toady started with an actual playable game that actually had things to do in it.
Toady One is basically the patron saint of doing things in the wrong order. He didn't start with a playable game. He started with an unplayable non-game, Slaves to Armok, which was to be his magnum opus as soon as he got the body tissue layers sorted out. Dwarf Fortress was meant to be a quick side project.

In Armok 1, Toady had somehow gotten the idea that he should build his game engine from the ground up. It had atrociously bad 3D graphics, did some weird Spore shit to automatically generate walking animations based on how many legs a creature had, and there were spells that could teleport a person's guts out of their body. And that was pretty much it. There wasn't anything resembling a game there. It often comes up in various interviews, when Toady's talking about the history of DF.

So, going by his example, you shouldn't start with a playable game, you should EXPERIMENTALLY VERIFY that you should start with a playable game by driving your project into the ground by way of trivial details.

mana brand on a 1d4 weapon is pretty shitty though. you're basically just spending a ton of mana to bump it up to 2d4

They really are.

Interpreted languages can be slower, but they're not inherently so. There's an extra layer of abstraction, but the slowdown directly caused by that isn't something you can normally notice without measuring tools. A bigger risk is someone else having written shit algorithms directly into the interpreter. I'm not sure how common that is, but I remember hearing stories of some specific things in Python that take way more time than they have any right to. You can avoid pitfalls like that, but only if you know where they are.

I think Civilization 4 was written in Python, by the way. I don't know if it's ideal for making games, but it's certainly possible.

Exactly. If you use the term as an unironic pejorative, however, then you miss the whole point of the issue. It's the same as -fag as a suffix in chan culture; it's not a pejorative, it's a mark of community. "We're friendly enough that we can both admit we're roguelikefags and not get mad about the term." Same as how black people call eachother nigga.

Sort of. I myself am not saying that, but I do think society overall says that. Then non-normal people react against what society expects of them, and they lash out against so-called normies.

I don't think that being a normie is inherently virtuous, or that being a non-normie is inherently virtuous. But society does clearly think that being a normie is virtuous, and so non-normies get ridiculed and shut out. Except on places like the chans, where they can ridicule and shut out others. The social situation becomes reversed in places like these (or at least it did, before normies started flooding the Internet).

That is, "goldifying" spell books so that, by walking over them, you have them in your "library" of spells, to be memorized whenever you choose. But what's worse is reading their defense of it (and even some of the arguments against it), where it's clear as day that they don't actually play this game.

I finally understand that the devs (esp. the ones making the biggest yet most unnecessary changes) are bloat: they've served their purpose in the past, and now they're just trying to lord over the fact that they still have commit access.

The defense, of course, is that it does get rid of tedium (i.e. ctrl+f'ing, finding stashes with books, and going to the stash) and having to lug around spellbooks which take up slots.

The argument against goldifying (as said by depg) is that a different system can be put in place: having spellbooks decompose if not in your inventory, so that the player has a "choice" of what they should/shouldn't carry.

But the simplest and strongest non-dev argument against it is what >>171969893 said: flavor and consistency. Not only would a spell library get rid of flavor texts for any/all spellbooks, but it'd just be a weird in-universe quirk that wouldn't really make any sense.

Easy to explain.

>he doesn't know about minecraft
>he doesn't know a casual 3D roguelike will print money
>but muh berlin interpretation

people want roguelikes, not autism.

no roguelikes are a tiny unpopular genre
even if roguelike players actually paid money for your game instead of ignoring it because it's probably worse than the 99999 freesoftware competitors you wouldn't make very much money

>>171971648
Yeah but if they totally screw it up there'll be so many iterations of rebalancing and removal.

the best kind of roguelike to program in order to make lots of money is a top-tier High Frequency Trading algorithm for the stockmarkets
pretty sure it qualifies under berlin, since everything else in existence does

The guy who did Cardinal Quest apparently made a decent amount of money off the sales, which goes to show that a middling mobile roguelike with an Oryx tileset might be the way to go.

Devotion to a Real PC Roguelike is an invitation to a life of poverty and squalor.

but it would require a shitload of work and coordination
in an opensource project where all the work must be provided by willing volunteers
if something is shitty to do it just wont get done

The RPS article about the dcss devs basically being a herd of cats feels particularly apt here.

this is why roguelites are the future.
only autists care about "pure roguelikes"

there's infinite potential, how bout a FPS roguelite?

Risk of rain, spelunky and FTL

Is there a way to order an NPC in C:DDA to disengage and run away? I just lost mine to a horde he insisted on moving towards, rather than moving away from.
I like the guy. He had high ranks in several useful skills, and a machete. He basically carried me until I got my own combat skills up to scratch.

>+9 vs +2
The hand axe effectively has +9 slaying, or an extra 1d9 for to-hit and to-damage. This is fairly insignificant if you have the skill to use a heavier weapon,
>handaxe vs broad axe
Don't remember the formula for damage, but base damage > enchantment/brand (except in the case of some artifacts)
>flaming vs electrocution
Flaming is a percentage-based bonus, so it sucks on handaxes and similarly lowtier weapons

Electrocution is just a substantial amount of damage that has a chance to trigger and few enemies it doesn't work on.

The broad axe wins out handily in this comparision.

Currently the only way is telling them to stop fighting altogether and start running by yourself.
