Everything else as the 'mission' can be done after you eliminate all opposition. There's no scouting, no avoid the enemy sensors and avoid any and all contact with the enemy. It's just 4 light/mediums versus 4 light/mediums.

Reminder that the CN9-AL will enjoy the Snubnose-20 come summer.

If you use an LFE 250 and ES, you can put on two snubnose pepsi and two ER medium lasers along with 18 DHS, shaving armor only off the legs. I roughly replicated the heat gen in smurfy using a PPC, ERPPC and two medium lasers; it reads as 18 seconds of fire before overheating so that's plenty especially when only firing the snubnose PPCs while on the run. It's equivalent to an energy AC/20 only without the low velocity, lack of arm aiming and explodey ammo.

The DHS spills out all the way to the left arm so be careful when shielding.

I stand by my dislike of Hunchies because aiming torso guns sucks balls.

the weight class isn't that important because there's a lot of overlap between them, what matters is the mech itself because a lot of them are suboptimal and some just straight up bad

You should sample the different trial mechs to get a feel of how different weight classes and builds play, while you're getting your starting bonus money from your first 25 matches.
Getting a light or assault as your first mech generally isn't recommended because those are a lot harder to play effectively than mediums and heavies.
Brawling can be very difficult on a lot of maps right now, although the faction play scouting gamemode is basically all 4v4 brawls all the time, but for that you need to use a mech that's 50 tons or under (55 tons for inner sphere mechs).
When you've got your cadet bonuses and gotten a hold of what kind of mechs/playstyles you like with the trial mechs, you can ask around here for recommendations for what to buy as your first mech. Some mechs are pretty bad or tricky to play, and some mechs are solid and hard to fuck up.

Try all the trial robots, and play the shitty 'tutorial.' 25 trial robot matches will max out your cadet bonus, which is a bunch of millions, and doing all of the tutorial gives another lump sum.

Unlike in tonks, robots aren't tiered, or arbitrarily bound in such a way that powerweapon X can only be used on units of at least grind level 7. Assuming there's weight and space, you can fit anything on anything.

The first and most important recommendation is to get a 50 or 55 tonner that you're really comfortable in. Also visit the mumble. This general has existed since the game officially became playable, and has a large number of ancient grindmasters/bittervets, all of whom know more about the game's secret systems and undocumented features than all of PGI's official 'guide' material.

But the most important rule: don't buy fucking shit until you've gotten your 25 cadet matches, tried all trials, and fully plundered the tutorial of money. Even after all this, ask on mumble or in general if your idea for your first mech is stupid before you buy it.

you're also in luck, because there's a lootbag event going, which is a huge boost for new players. If possible, play groups with the bittervets. You'll learn far faster than you would playing alone, and you'll see the actual MWO landscape, as opposed to the kiddy pool PGI made for solos.

Everything that's not a shitmech has at least minimally viable utility. In truly MLGpr0 matches, only the top tier gundams in each weightclass are considered, but for less hardcore drops, only true trash is legit useless.

Things like vindicators, dragons, mist lynxes, kintaros, archers, orions, summoners without the P2W nipple PPC pods, victors, standard cyclopses, and some others are the truest of the true shitmechs, and shouldn't really be played or bought.

Hi guys, I started playing MWO yesterday and i'm wondering what a good long range mech is.

I'm getting into using Gauss Rifles and even Ultra AC's, but I have no idea if using them is a good idea.

I also don't really understand how the mech's differ that much beyond size, amour and speed.

I still haven't bought my first mech yet as per recommended some of you guys but I was wondering based on what I'm enjoying right now, (long range fighting) what should I be looking at working towards?

Long range fighting I'd recommend the Ebon Jaguar.

Well first off it goes at a good speed.
It has omni-pod parts.
Okay tonnage and slots.

But for LONG RANGE it excels better than a Timberwolf because it sports much better high mounts and a high mounted ballistic for a good Gauss hardpoint.

Durability wise it's pretty bad with shit hitboxes and it's width but it excels in alpha-poke (laser vomit) and long range to minimize it's size and abuse it's high mounts.

Night Gyr does the same thing with JJs but it's slow and you're a Niggyr.

Ebon Jag will teach you how to be squishy and get off damage at the same time while being forgiving thanks to it's tonnage and omni-pod capabilities.

Classic Ebon Jag build is laser vomit, take the 3 Energy left torso, 1 medium and 2 LPL, poke hills with the LPL for easy long range damage with minimum danger. In a brawl fire off 5 med lasers. In a steamroll victory you can alpha all you want for lots of damage.

I'd also recommend the Clan Hunchback with PPCs or LPLs, very similar but less heatsink and variety in one mech as the Hunchies are pretty locked in hardpoints and tonnage.

For IS you can get a Blackjack or Shadowhawk with Gauss.

Also Ebon Jaguar can run triple UAC5s for dakka quite comfortably

Blasted the fuck out of a Banshee, and then lost a side torso so had to yakkity sax his near-done Kodiak buddy before surprising him with a final fuck you when he turned around and tried to finish me off first. Felt pretty clutch until I realized there was another assault behind the kodiak, and then I died. All in all, bretty gud though.

Are flamers terrible, or just underused? I hardly ever see discussion of them, and almost never see them in-game. I've also never used them myself, mostly because I dunno when they'd be a good idea to take. They seem like they'd be a powerful tool if used properly, and I'd like to make use of them, but I don't know enough about their specifics.

So in Titans of Steel I liked to load up mechs with flamethrowers and melee weapons and too few heat sinks and just berserker rush the enemy until my reactor overheated and I blew up in a mini nuke and took them with me.

Flamers are more of an utility item than a weapon, it has no range and it does no dmg. Only a few mechs and builds can sacrifice a hardpoint for such a situational weapon in most cases. 1 or 2 flamers are pretty nice in scouting tho.

+ The XL300 engine it uses, while expensive, is THE most common engine used in IS mechs, so you can use it in many other mechs
+ Other than the cost of the engine, the mech is very cheap
As a bonus you can also brawl just by changing the weapons.

Group and solo queue being completely separate is dumb as hell. There are sensible ways to make mixed queue work too, by making it so if there are solos and groups in the same match, there are mostly equivalent amounts and sizes of groups on both teams so it wont be Sealclubbing Warfare 2.0.
