Fishing - sometimes Pod doesn't get tugged down into the water, but I still get a catch. Why is that? Is there something I'm not noticing? Also I caught a basking shark machine and freaked myself out when I saw it emerge from the water.

Also, I can't self-destruct to ditch 2B's skirt for some reason; the game says "the command was not executed properly."

Lastly, I'm playing on Steam, but the graphics just don't seem to compare to consoles for some reason. I've got a pretty good setup too; anyone else having this issue?

Resistance still lives not only in Nierland but the rwst of the world as well. The Carrier is from overseas.
Friendly machines still exist but in smaller numbers.
DevPop still exist elsewhere because they were mindwiped to believe otherwise.
YoRHa is dead, but there might be enough room that druggies and 4S find a way to cheat the Pods sensing operational black boxes.

The game LITERALLY TELLS US IT WAS ANDROIDS THAT MADE YoRHa so there's no reason to think Machines did it. They allowed Resistance to exist so that they can evolve and follow their programming to "Defeat the Enemy". N2 even states wanted to be human just like machines wanted to be human, resulting in the holy trinity of fuccbois..

I'm one of those people who thought Nier's gameplay was fine all things considered, but the fact that Automata is such a joy to play most of the time is such a huge point in it's favor that I can't fault people for that.

Nier probably had the better journey with more memorable moments, but Automata's themes were a lot more concise and better presented, which makes up for a lot of the stuff it didn't have compared to Nier.

I mostly disagree with you except for the characters, as the Nier 1 characters easily trump the androids. The cast of Nier 1 were a lovable band of misfits and their snappy banter made them instantly likable. By comparison, the characters in Automata mostly exist as tools to further the narrative and to approach philosophical concepts - at least for the first half of the game.

However, I feel Automata's overall storyline outshines Nier 1 through presentation and pacing. Nier felt a little cobbled-together with Taro desperately trying to make the bullshit work as one cohesive experience. Of course, Nier WAS cobbled together, cannibalising on another project involving fairytales. The Nier bosses still reference this (Sleeping Beauty, Hook/Wendy, Mother Goose, Hansel and Gretel). Also, Emil goes from being a real human boy to a puppet-like creature, like a reverse Pinoccio.

Not to say I didn't enjoy Nier, but I feel Automata is largely the betted game.

The characters are a HUGE deal to me. When Emil sacrificed himself and I didn't think he would be back, I was in tears. Hell, even now I can't watch his sacrifice without feeling incredibly sad. Barely any moments in Automata come close, and those that do are often related to Emil anyway.

I didn't feel like Automata had the big payoff with its plot that Nier did either. On playthrough A of Nier, the final battle with the Shadowlord felt like a real, FINAL battle. The music was outfuckingstanding, and it seemed like your whole adventure had been leading to this point. In automata, the game just kinda of stops after an ok battle between A2/9S.

The music in Automata was great, but I felt like the original Nier had better individual tracks. Automata certainly has better variety though. Less repetitiveness. I totally understand how that's almost entirely an opinion thing though.

I loved Automata, but it didn't catch me off guard very much, unlike Nier. But perhaps the problem is just that, because I'm expecting the misery, it doesn't hit me as hard when it comes.

I heard this game's control scheme is shit to the point of near-unplayability on PC. Is that true or is it just nitpicking autists whining?

I agree for the most part, but Automata's themes were really well presented in a way that sort of makes the story and characters feel like more than the sum of it's parts. It gets better the more you think about it and realize just how many different parts of the story lead into each other thematically, and while the characters have less individually memorable moments, the depth that they do have is a lot more poignant when you fully consider the rest of the game.

Nier on the other hand was just a huge mishmash of different things with no really consistent theme or anything. That was a huge part of the appeal, don't get me wrong, Nier had the best band of misfits I've ever seen, and going on crazy adventures with them was incredibly fun and the individual characters were great, but I can definitely see why Automata would make the stronger impression on people.

Ultimately they both tell really different kinds of stories, so it's hard to really compare them.

It's implied that robots without a purpose will eventually become apathetic and just stand around, one of the first things 9S does when you leave the bunker for the first time is comment on how there are more and more machines who just stand around rusting up until they die.

Thus, one can assume that when they say that the androids began to "lose morale" after they learned that mankind was extinct and their purpose was gone, they began to become apathetic and just stand around without any drive, necessitating the ruse to keep them from just wasting away.

This is also probably why they made such a big deal out of machines finding their "treasures", the one thing that seemed to catch their interest and give them purpose beyond their programmed goal. It's why 9S wasn't all that broken learning that humanity was extinct, because he still had 2B, who was his "treasure", and he didn't start to lose it until she died, just like Eve.
