I play with stable nomads option. Even when i'm not nomad myself. CK2 already has enough border gore as it is.
And they are only somewhat hard at the start. Once you manage to move capital in europe and get your hands on knight and dozens of holdings to raze it becomes breeze.

Eu3: HTTT is more varied, subtle and not as streamlined as Eu3: DW and Eu4.

Eu4 is more focused on being a game you can play against others, while Eu3 is probably better for simulation/roleplaying.
For example in Eu3 I once started a game as Luxembourg, I made a slider movement that decreased manpower in one of my provinces(I only had one), so my max manpower was lower than 1000, which meant that I couldn't train any regiments.
In Eu4 every opm, regardless of how shitty the province is gets 10k base manpower magically from nowhere.

Terrain is more interesting when it comes to army composition in eu3 since inf and cav have different penalties.

Not really, it's just a more minor part of the game. EU3 doesn't have a fleshed out economy like V2, so it's not really a problem. Trade is just a way you can play tall and make some extra money. The rules about when and where you can build centers of trade are a little bit arbitrary but are ultimately not that important.

Yeah, they tend to be, although that can be mitigated somewhat with map mods that make the shapes of provinces better, and there's even an anon who posts here sometimes working on a little mod to force the AI into having better borders.

So I'm back playing Victoria 2 after 2 years absence from any grand strategy games and I can't remember shit about it.

Can anyone give me tips on how to make my industry powerful and my economy large? Playing as Sweden, which has a small population, and I can't seem to make money no matter what I do. My capitalists invest meager amounts of money in factories, I'm forced to build and invest quite a bit myself and the factories aren't really making that much money. Furthermore I can't sustain more than 21k army which leaves me defenseless against the nations I'm surrounded by - UK, Prussia and Russia. Tried to take Denmark, they had no allies and no-one was guaranteeing their independence, but Prussia entered the war and kicked my ass soundly.

But really my biggest problem is my economy - I just can't get it to work, I'm losing money constantly unless I tax and tariff the shit out of my people. Any tips on how to get it running?

Finally done. No planning used throughout game. Republican start (meaning got 0 help from Allies against SU). Had ~95% war participation against Soviets, about 50% against Axis. Turned fascist against Allies alone in later game. Accepted Baltic Bros into "Your faction name here" when seriously drunk. Fun and strategically interesting game, didn't really think I could do it.

Maxed out population in 11 years. This game would be infinitely more challenging if the AI would use similar tax strategies to encourage growth. The only other empire I've encountered so far is Dahyut and has ~6b population.

Nah, if you're in a war and you don't see turf as being part of your future plans then Balkanize your enemy as much as you can in the deal.

Best case scenario you just gave your enemy a new enemy to deal with.

Worst case scenario your enemy has to spend time, money and monarch points getting that territory back.

In peace deals always look at every option in every tab. Really take your time with that shit. Release nations, return cores, revoke claims. All of them really useful at times.
