When last we espied the progress of the victorious forces of the Guomin Geming Jun, Case Bai Qi--referred to by the superstitious footsoldiers as "Case Botokhui," after an old Mongol legend--had just reached completion. With over 150,000 Japanese forces destroyed in total and three IJN landings crushed, the Kwantung was scrambling to reach defensive positions along the border with Manchuria, and to somehow manage to find enough troops to sustain the massive losses taken due to the encirclement of their forces in Bai Qi. Premiere Jiang and Marshal He Yingqin are now ready to organize the Chinese response to the Japanese presence in Manchuria....

And we're back! Sorry for the long delay, but the AAR is on again and will remain on until it's done this time. This post backlinks to where we left off, as usual.

With the front line finally in operational position and the IJN landings at Qingdao neutralized, Jiang and He organize plans for the occupation of Manchuria and Korea, which will effectively end the Japanese imperial project on the mainland.

The first operational plan is Wanchun Chubu, or "Ten Thousand Armies Ride Out." Although perhaps slightly poetic, its importance is justified: not only does the Guomin Geming Jun intend to capture and try the puppet-emperor and pretender to the throne Pu Yi, they also seek to capture the critical Kwantung army office at Dalian, which represents the major linkage between the Kwantung and operational support from Tokyo. If it falls, it is almost certain that the Kwantung itself will begin to topple shortly thereafter, leaving the IJA garrison in Korea as the only force left to resist the Guomin Geming Jun's expansion.

Yet, as with Operation Yanqiu, Wanchun Chubu is but an initial and positioning operation for the larger operation that will follow it. Although the fall of Dalian is critical for the end of the Kwantung, what could be more devastating to Japan than the loss of its largest and most economically mighty colony, Korea?

The real goal of the next phase of the war is the success of Case Hancheng Hanshou, or "Han Men will Protect Han City." Seoul was once firmly in the sphere of the Chinese nation, and although the Japanese tore it away from China during the death convulsions of the Qing Empire, the Republican project has proven its strength, and its worthiness to hold Korea again. The capture of the peninsula will not only cast down the imperialist pretensions of the Japanese, it will reunite the Chinese and the Korean people.

The success of Hancheng Hanshou relies upon two assumptions: that Japanese defenses following the capture of Dalian will be disorganized and focused in southern Korea, and that a force can be split from the assault on Dalian and can rapidly take up positions even in the forbidding terrain of the Changbai and Kangnam mountain ranges, which run on the border of Manchuria and Korea. If either of these suppositions prove false, the danger to the Chinese forces operating near Dalian might be extreme.

Yet both Jiang and He are prepared to make a gamble in this case. The IJA and IJN have suffered losses exceeding 150,000 men between them, and the losses of the Kwantung are much higher. While the Kwantung has broad operational authority in Manchuria, the defense of Korea is placed primarily in the hands of the IJA, and Jiang believes that they will not risk breaking from their defensive positions south of the mountain ranges--if they did, they would risk supply trouble and encirclement. Provided Jiang gambles properly, Guomin Geming Jun forces can occupy the mountains and swarm down upon Korea simultaneously and in force, forcing troop encirclements and seizing cities ahead of bogged down and engaged IJA forces.

As with many of the Premiere's plans, it relies on much going right--yet Jiang has been successful thus far, and it would not be honorable to doubt his capabilities now. In one week, the armies will march forth.

The First of January, one-thousand nine-hundred and thirty-nine years since the birth of Christ. One month and nineteen days remain until the Year of the Rabbit. Operation Wanchun Chubu has been underway for a little over a week.

On this day, the Kwantung organizational headquarters at Dalian issued two public orders--the first was Sanko Sakusen, the "Three Alls Policy," namely the looting, burning, and murder of all areas found to house Chinese sympathizers within all Kwantung-administered territory, ostensibly issued as punishment for the Wanchun Chubu offensive. And, further, on the authority of Kwantung commander General Kenkichi Ueda, the Kwantung officially ordered the transfer of Manchuria from the control of Pu Yi to the Kwantung itself--not merely defensive control, but political as well. Pu Yi was personally deposed by Kwantung Chief of Staff Rensuke Isogai in the early hours of the morning.

This move has infuriated not just the Chinese, but the Imperial Court in Tokyo. Pu Yi, although in the grand scheme of things relatively unimportant, was nevertheless a puppet of the Emperor, and the desperate move by the Kwantung appears both to the Chinese and the Japanese as nothing more than the final death-throes of a doomed force, the acquisition of Manchuria being naught more than an excuse to find more "Chinese loyalists" to execute, as the collapsing Kwantung turns to institutional violence to maintain its cohesion.

Emperor Hirohito and his Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoe come to an immediate agreement to avoid further support of the Kwantung, and publish the official, although secret, memorandum widely throughout the Imperial government. Although firebrands connected to the Kwantung such as Hideki Tojo rage against the "abandonment" of the "loyal" Kwantung, the men who stand with them are few; this time, in deposing a Japanese puppet and undertaking a reign of terror to maintain their control, the Kwantung have gone much too far.

They are alone.

In a mad fury over the issuing of Sanko Sakusen and reports of small-scale massacres and arsons taking place throughout lower Manchuria, the Guomin Geming Jun charges forth with wild abandon. Catching both its own commanders and the Japanese entirely by surprise, the Revolutionary Army comes upon the Kwantung forces at their rear, before they have time to establish an adequate defense. Major General Wei Lihuang, in operational command of the 3rd Jun, leads a reckless attack on Huludao without any support. Although his losses are horrendous, Wei is well aware that the capture of Huludao would pocket almost the entire Kwantung army, in the process securing the capture of well over a hundred thousand Japanese forces.

Both praising and cursing his initiative, Jiang moves as many forces as he can spare to support Wei, although he believes many Japanese will likely escape before the enraged Major General can secure the pocket. He only hopes that the pressure of the Guomin Geming Jun elsewhere on the front can serve to pin the Kwantung and prevent them from escaping before the pocket closes shut.

Although as Jiang fears many of the Kwantung forces were able to escape, in the end a devastating loss is still inflicted upon the Japanese at Qinhuangdao. Wei Lihuang's battered and disorganized forces occupied Huludao just long enough to pocket the troops to his rear, and the redeployed Guomin Geming Jun forces in the region, under the operational command of Major General Ding Zhipan, were able to inflict a crippling loss on the Kwantung: 75,000 more troops captured, along with several more precious tank divisions which the Kwantung simply cannot afford to lose.

Although both Jiang and He Yingqin are ecstatic at the result--they award Wei Lihuang the Medal of the Armed Forces, A-1 Ribbon and the Order of the Cloud and Banner, Yellow Grand Cordon, as well as presenting Ding Zhipan the Order of the Sacred Tripod, Special Grand Cordon--their elation soon turns to fury. The demoralized and devastated Kwantung, facing major losses in Manchuria and now suffering the absence of another 75,000 troops, lets loose a reign of terror. In Dalian alone some 20,000 ethnic Manchurians are slaughtered, and the death toll in Changchun is said to approach almost 50,000 between the city itself and the countryside. As the fighting capability of the Kwantung collapses, it appears evident that all that can keep these hopeless men together is hatred.

The Chinese respond in kind, to the outrage of the international community. Not wishing to waste bullets, Jiang orders the emergency divisions to "manage" the 75,000 prisoners taken at Qinhuangdao. Over the next eleven months, each would be fed a starvation diet and systemically hanged in retaliation for the Japanese execution of Sanko Sakusen.

On both sides the rhetoric of hatred has reached unprecedented levels, and both sides have violated international human rights laws many times over. The enmity between the Chinese and the Japanese is at an all-time high, and the men of the Guomin Geming Jun wish nothing more than to march victoriously into Dalian, slaughtering every Japanese man they see on the way.

Yet, unfortunately, it is not quite so simple a process as that. The wanton advance of Wei Lihuang, and the Sanko policy of the Japanese, means that the majority of the territory between Beijing and the hilly territory of Fuxin has been critically damaged. Even with the port at Huludao under Republican control, there are simply not enough supplies to sustain the army, much less order an advance. Many of the soldiers in the region are reliant upon the charity of locals grateful for saving them from the Japanese, since the Kuomintang cannot effectively feed them due to the devastated rail lines.

Although infuriated at what seems to be a typical failing--"at the very moment of the victorious strike, it seems my hand is always stayed!" an irate Jiang told an American journalist--there is nothing that can be done about the devastated infrastructure. The 1st Juntuan under Xu Yuanquan is given autonomy to invade Manchuria, which has suffered less infrastructural damage, while the fuming Jiang and the 2nd Juntuan dig in, although probing attacks at Fuxin are made regularly. As soon as the damage caused by the Sanko Sakusen can be reversed, the Guomin Geming Jun will march into Dalian with righteous fury.

With little else to do while the front remains stagnant, the Premier takes the time to re-examine the Republic's research subsidies. With officers now once again properly spread throughout the Guomin Geming Jun and several tactical advances made between the execution of Case Bai Qi and the opening of Operation Wanchun Chubu, Jiang takes the time to redirect subsidies away from armed forces development toward naval and air development. The Republic lacks any navy whatsoever following the Japanese acquisition of Shanghai and subsequent sinking of the fleet, and her air force is so outdated and so undermanned as to be an actual liability if it leaves its airfields.

Although Jiang long doubted the day would come, the time when the Republic of China will be able to challenge Japan directly appears to be at hand. Without advanced naval and air capabilities, however, the Republic will never be able to do more than secure the mainland against Japanese threat, and Jiang is of the opinion that the Japanese islands must be invaded and subjugated to forever end the Japanese pretensions to superiority. These research subsidies are the beginning of that plan--the beginning of the true expansion of China's military to a power not just on land, but on the sea and in the sky.

Late in the evening of March 26th, Jiang receives word that Adolf Hitler's Germany has seized control of Czechoslovakia, establishing a Slovakian puppet-state in its wake. It appears that the Sudetenland was not enough for the ravenous German dictator.

Although the matter is worrying insofar as it indicates that a war in Europe may be around the corner--and because von Falkenhousen, despite his professionalism, is more distracted by events in his homeland than ever--it is, as with the Sudeten crisis, ultimately a matter of minimal interest to the Chinese Premier. The war he must contend with is in his own garden, not in the distant fields of Europe.

Finally, in late March, enough of the railroad infrastructure in the north is repaired for Jiang to feel confident in ordering dual attacks on Fuxian and Jinzhou. Although the Kwantung resist bravely, theirs is a doomed fight; they suffer over 10,000 battlefield casualties in the defense of Jinzhou and over a 3:1 loss ratio, a staggering defeat for the already wavering Japanese.

Yet Sanko Sakusen remains in operation, and even as the Kwantung forces retreat from Fuxian and Jinzhou in disorganized mobs, they slaughter, rape, pillage, and burn in their wake. Although Fuxian is taken, the supply situation--which was only just alleviated--worsens again as two full Jun occupy newly desolate territory.

Although Jiang verges on the apoplectic, there is little he can do; the fighting with the Kwantung begins to stall into a long, attritional war based upon who can hold territory long enough to repair its supply lines, feed their troops sufficiently, and organize them enough to press a further attack. Trenches are dug, the ground is muddied, and artillery rakes both sides with impunity; the land around Fuxian is broken and scarred as if the Earth itself was rending the land apart. Japan and China finally experience the true horror of the First World War; they merely do so two decades later than the Western world.

The organization, morale, and hope of troops on both sides collapses. Food on the front is scarce, life expectancy is low, and the ground is slick with rain and blood. The plains around Fuxian earn a new name in the Chinese lexicon--"the consumer of men."

Over a month has passed, and tens of thousands of soldiers, not to mention thousands of officers, have already perished in the plains of Fuxian, some to battle, some to starvation, but most to disease. Miasmas beyond what China has the capacity to handle sweep the army camps and decimate their populations, and horrific diseases of the skin brought on by the trench fighting ravage the soldiers on the front. Malnourished, disease-ridden, and under constant fire, hundreds break; suicides reach record levels. And, worst of all, the supply situation actually degrades--the ongoing push into Manchuria undertaken by the 1st Juntuan lengthens the supply lines from Nanjing and prevents the capital from forcing through even a marginal amount of supplies to the beleaguered troops at the front.

Impatient both with the supply situation and what he views as a lack of sufficient troops on the front to simply break through the Japanese lines--little does Jiang know their presence would merely exacerbate the issues brought on by the Kwantung's Sanko Sakusen--he orders the production of several strong garrison divisions which will take control of China's ports and free up all emergency divisions for redeployment to the front and a "grand assault into the mountains."

He Yingqin is much more realistic about the situation and realizes the movement of additional troops to the front will merely exacerbate issues, but remains silent, hoping that the situation will change by the time the Premiere's garrisons are trained. If not, the Republic's supply issues are only likely to mount as the year progresses.

In brighter news, Manchuria is falling to the 1st Juntuan largely without any resistance. The Juntuan's scouting divisions have reached the most distant extent of the Manchurian borders, and within a few short weeks should begin turning back into the interior. Such a move will not only bring the Manchurian capital Changchun into the Republic, thereby protecting the ethnic Manchurians there and securing desperately needed supplies of rare materials, it will also shorten the supply lines and marginally alleviate the supply dearth at the southeastern front.

Unfortunately for both He Yingqin and the soldiers at the front, the supremely impatient Premier refuses to wait for the new garrisons to fully finish their training before officially commissioning the newest Jun--the 11th, formed from approximately half of the various emergency divisions held in reserve--and ordering it to the front.

Jiang hopes that the inclusion of another Jun will allow the front to be pushed along a much larger line, allowing for a bypassing or encirclement of Anshan, which is the new line to which the front has moved. Yingqin, as well as politicians and the army staff in Nanjing, doubt that a new Jun would prove profitable, at least not for months yet; the supply situation on the front is simply too atrocious, and the Kwantung, operating much closer to their supply depot at Dalian, are simply in a better defensive position than the Guomin Geming Jun. Even the limited extension of the line which Republican forces have been able to accomplish have done little more than open their forces to Kwantung assault on multiple sides, as well as worsen a supply situation which is already critical.

Yet attempting to convince Jiang of all this is pointless. He orders the troops to the front with no delay, and the 11th Jun marches forth.

With the killing fields of Fuxian now seized by the Guomin Geming Jun, here lies the new stronghold of the Kwantung--Anshan. Riding the mountains and with a strong river flowing between it and the desolated landscape of the Japanese defenders around Fuxian, assaulting Anshan is effectively hopeless, and supplying the Guomin Geming Jun at all is a herculean task. Although Republican forces have seized the nearby city of Mukden and begun a limited encirclement of Anshan, the frankly destroyed landscape around Fuxian, which the Guomin Geming Jun is being forced to operate in, simply cannot support life any longer, much less supply. Even with the devastating Republican victory at Goubangzi, the victory feels a hollow one--the occupying Jun will be forced to operate in a hellscape of craters, burned land, blood-soaked fields, and dead peasants.

"I joined the Army to get a bit of extra rice in my belly, and to support my family," wrote one soldier from Guangzhou, fighting far from home. "Here we are, being swallowed by the land around us, falling in its plains and giving up our lives in a land which is more evil than any I have ever seen before. I trust that what we do is right; the Japanese must be punished. But why must we continue to fight here, where I have not had the rice I joined the Army for in six days, and we resort to eating rats pulled from the blackened fields? The land itself is death; we should not be here. No human should be here any longer."

Another month has passed, and the front has not moved. Many have died in the interim, however, from the disease, starvation, and roaming Kwantung bands which have become commonstance in the no man's land between the death fields and Anshan. The arrival of the 11th Jun has done little but keep the broken and starving defenders at Dawa, who feel the brunt of the Kwantung forces in Anshan's ire, operating; when the Jun defending Dawa is finally at the point of starvation and must retreat, the 11th Jun rushes forward to hold the defense long enough for their soldiers to be fed and treated, and then they are thrown back into the fighting. The constant Japanese bombardment--and the constant Republican bombardment of Anshan--has merely moved the killing fields a few kilometers southeast.

Although the supply situation is still the paramount cause of trouble on the front, outside of the killing fields the situation has begun to stabilize as more of Manchuria is brought under Republican control and the supply lines shorten. With his garrison forces finally readied, Jiang believes that sending in the newly-minted 12th Jun, primarily formed from volunteers and militiamen and long held in reserve defending the territory surrounding Qingdao, will allow for a further encirclement of Anshan by reinforcing the battered Republican forces in Haicheng, the mountains to the northwest of Anshan, and allowing the 7th Jun, which currently occupies Haicheng, to rush south and seize Dalian from behind.

He Yingqin and the staffers in Nanjing are frankly uncertain whether they can effectively supply the 12th Jun and are likewise worried about the wisdom of leaving a militia force in control of defending the most important mountain pass which the Republic must hold, but they understand Jiang's impatience, and have also begun to worry about the dangers of the long fight for Anshan. They reluctantly support his plan fully; the capture of Dalian must be made a priority.

Meanwhile in Europe, in early August Hitler's government shocks the world by signing a non-aggression pact with the Soviets under Stalin. This is worrying to Jiang in particular; although he knows he can no longer rely on the Germans to protect against the Japanese, he held out hope that fear of German assault would keep Stalin distracted and prevent any potential hostilities from erupting in Manchuria.

von Falkenhausen is almost beside himself with concern for affairs in Europe, and eventually Jiang is regretfully forced to remove him from operational command of his infantry group, as he can no longer command his forces effectively. He is sent back to Germany with full honors.

Shortly after the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact is signed and von Falkenhausen is returned to Germany, the Japanese launch a final, desperate strike. Known among the Kwantung simply as Seppuku--no doubt because the forces carrying it out seek an honorable death--a full corps of Japanese forces launch an all-out attack on the tired, starving, and diseased troops holding Dawa. They fold rapidly, and the 11th Jun, by now as exhausted as the very men they were meant to take over from, collapses behind them; the Japanese begin a grand push forward, threatening to retake much of the territory to the north they had lost.

Although the Japanese do make it to Fuxian, setting foot in the same territory that their artillery devastated months before, they underestimated Jiang's resolve. In a daring and dangerous move, the Premier stripped the entire defensive force of Mukden to plug the hole made by the advancing Kwantung forces, gambling as he had previously that the IJA forces defending Korea would not cross the mountains. He proved correct.

The corps of Japanese soldiers which had launched Seppuku, numbering little less than half of the entire remaining Kwantung forces, are now encircled within the hellscape of Fuxian, surrounded on all sides. With their surrender, the Kwantung will have fewer than 60,000 operational troops remaining.

On the 1st of September, 1939, World War II begins with the German invasion of Poland.

It is far away from the mind of Jiang, although he marks it and knows it has great implications for others. Yet, before the end, the global politics of the conflict will sweep China up with it, into a future uncertain for everyone.

So what is the consensus about the greatest Grand Strategy games?
Vicky2, Hol3/DH, EU3 and Distant Worlds?
EU4 is apparantly bad for weird design choices and made worse by late change, MEIOU & Taxes apparantly makes it great but some disagree and there is performance problems.
CK2 is more in-between with mostly the DLCs being controversial.
Did I got it right?

Although the Japanese forces resist heroically, two weeks after the encirclement of Fuxian, after days of starvation conditions and heavy losses on both sides, the Japanese finally surrender. It is the end of the Kwantung, although the Generals locked up in Dalian may not yet realize it.

Many of these diseased Japanese will die on their own, and Jiang merely orders them thrown into concentration camps; their own bodily weakness will handle the majority of them. That is, save for the officers; those Jiang orders executed by hanging. Although Jiang is annoyed that the majority of the highest-ranking officers cannot be killed, as they died either in a final charge of Japanese forces or by committing suicide before the Republican army could process all the captured men, those who remain will be punished as they deserve; they shall feel the righteous fury of the Guomintang.

"Ever since Hitler's Germany has begun its march into Poland, the eyes of the West have rightly been focused upon the struggle in Europe, for its outcome will decide the future course of our world. Yet it would be remiss to entirely disregard what is happening in China, and the very real barbarity which is the currency of both sides. Races we believed were among the most advanced in the Orient, the noble Japanese and proud and ancient Chinese, reveal their true and lasting barbarity in the conditions of this war. A mask of civilization can be painted on the yellow face, but civilization, it seems, can never truly reach the soul of the Oriental. It is a lesson we would do well to remember," wrote one American correspondent.

After the surrender of Jinzhou, the 7th Jun was finally able to break out of the mountain passes at Haicheng and come behind the Kwantung, catching them unprepared. With 50,000 troops lost at Jinzhou, the Kwantung, in a final, desperate attempt at defense, was forced to split their forces between Anshan and Wafangdian, on the very outskirts of Dalian. Although the mountains of Anshan are a mighty defense, faced with assault by Guomin Geming Jun forces on all sides, the defending forces there are dying by the thousands; they will not hold long. And Wafangdian's defense has collapsed; the Kwantung have finally retreated to Dalian alone. The end is near.

In a celebratory mood, Jiang orders the construction of five new Battleships, of an American design replicated by Chinese engineers. Although they are already far outdated and will be even more outdated by the point of their construction, they will give Republican engineers valuable experience regarding their production, and can serve as coastal defense ships in the future. Yet their construction is nevertheless more symbolic than not; they are to be officially ordered the day that Dalian falls, for a mighty Republican fleet bombarding its shores is the future the Japanese have to look forward to.

Three short days later, the pocketed Japanese forces in Anshan surrender. They, like those who were captured in Fuxian, are placed in concentration camps.

Fu Zuoyi, operational commander of the 1st Jun--the Jun which had suffered the most in defending the no man's land--is given the honor of occupying the territory. He will also later be awarded the Medal of the Armed Force, A-1 Ribbon, for managing to hold together the front line in the face of massive Kwantung assaults during the attritional warfare of the summer.

In the early hours of the morning of the 19th of September, 1939, elements of the 7th Jun, under the forward command of Yu Jishi, begin artillery bombardment of the isolated Kwantung forces operating in Dalian. Although they do focus upon the military forces, they do not try over-hard to avoid striking the nearby Japanese civilian sectors of the city.

Low on food, out of ammunition, and with its commander having already committed suicide, just three days later the defending garrison of Dalian surrenders, allowing the 7th Jun into the city.

They should rather have fought to the last.

"Never in all of my days have I experienced such a spirit of barbarity, and I expect I shall never see such again.

"The Kuomintang forces entered Port Arthur early on the morning of the 22nd, and thenceforth they fell to their race's basest instincts. So far a fall it is that I do not believe that any white man could ever possibly capture the savagery, and my attempt to do so will be but a mockery of the terror which the Japanese have experienced.

"Those soldiers who were shot dead while surrendering to the advancing Chinese were the luckiest. More were tortured; stripped naked and used for target practice. Others were forced to dig their own mass graves before being shot by laughing Republican officers. Still others were forced to lead Chinese soldiers back to their homes; these then had their legs broken and were forced to observe as their homes were looted, their male children executed before them, and their wives and daughters raped. And, at the end of it all, the savage Chinese punished the women yet further by killing their husbands before their eyes, taking, as it were, not only their honor and their goods, but also the selfsame force which is necessary to sustain s delicate lady. Not so delicate shall the Japanese woman's life be in Port Arthur any longer, I fear.

"This is the savagery of the Oriental. Hitler's madness is undeniable, but it is of a European sort, a sort bound up with ordering lesser peoples, as the racial consciousness of all whites naturally demands. What we in Europe must never forget is that the Oriental has an entirely different consciousness than ourselves. They are savages--both groups for let us not forget that the Japanese begot this retribution with their policy of murder and death--and under any veneer of civilization shall nevertheless remain so. Isolating their brutality should be among the foremost goals of a good, Christian enterprise."

-A report from a British consul present in Dalian during its capture.

Although it does not go entirely unheard, the British consul's report is buried under matters which are far more important to European minds, namely the capture of Warsaw and effective surrender of Poland. Germany has annexed Poland within less than a month, a shockingly speedy conquest which has left the entire Western world reeling. It is the news on every lip, and the doings of the Chinese in Dalian, although it would be remembered by politicians and historians in the future, are forgotten by the average Westerner, if they ever heard of it at all.

For his services in the capture of Dalian and the subsequent punishment of its over-proud Japanese garrison, Jiang personally flies into the city and awards Yu Jishi with the Order of National Glory and Order of the Tripod, Special Grand Cordon. These awards tie Jishi with Long Yun as the most decorated officer in the Guomin Geming Jun; merits well-earned, in Jiang's estimation, with the lesson that Jishi has taught the Japanese about their vaunted "superiority."

Korea is next.

So after a long CK2 hiatus I installed Geheimnisnacht, and I'm having a decent amount of fun. But there's a bit of a problem: despite outnumbering my enemies 6:1, they'll come out of the battle with fairly minimal casualties. For example, I'll send my stack of 1,800 troops against their 300, and they'll only take like 70-100 casualties to my 5-10. Did they rebalance battles or something?
As a sidenote I disabled shattered retreats, so it's not that.

With the collapse of the Kwantung, the defense of Korea comes fully under the auspices of the IJN and IJA, which are now firmly under the control of Tokyo, and more especially of the Emperor. The gross failures of the Kwantung has significantly weakened the military lobby within the Japanese government, and more de facto power has devolved to Showa than he has ever held before in his reign.

Yet captured Japanese officers on the front tell striking tales of what was known in Tokyo prior to a few weeks before: until Republican forces had appeared on the border with Korea, the Kwantung had continued to reassure the Imperial government in Tokyo that, although its forces on the coast at Dalian were struggling, it was winning great victories in Manchuria! The dishonorable officers in command of the Kwantung had been lying to both the Imperial Army Headquarters and to the Emperor himself regarding the Guomin Geming Jun's progress, and when planning the defense of Korea neither the Emperor or his advisers had anticipated the need to defend the entire front.

Although the entire Guomin Geming Jun is not yet in position to strike, as soon as this information reaches him Jiang decides that the time is over-ripe to attack, while the IJA and IJN are still desperately attempting to organize a full defense of the peninsula. He orders the Guomin Geming Jun forward on all fronts.

Meanwhile, the reactionary Nationalists have finally secured victory in Spain following several long years of war. Although not directly aligned with Hitler, the victory of another far-right group in Europe is certainly a boon to his efforts, as he will not be forced to deal with a leftist government in the peninsula. As all continues to look up for Hitler, the attention of Europe remains fixed far away from the doings of China.

As the assault through Korea begins, news which comforts Jiang reaches his ears--the Soviet Union has become preoccupied with the Baltics and Finland. Long fearing a Soviet assault in Manchuria whilst his forces occupy Korea, Jiang is now reasonably confident that the war with Japan on the mainland will end before the Soviets could possibly launch an attack against him. The Republic will be safe.

That's pretty shitty then. Why would you create a mod for a game that extends the timeline but only works when a very specific set of circumstances is followed? When you play as Germany you either NEED to lose or the mod is effectively useless.

Same with that Grand Campaign mod. It links WW1 to WW2, but it won't work properly if Germany wins WW1. And even if Germany loses WW1, if the Russian Empire remains intact then WW2 and the Cold War won't work properly. What utter shit.

Guess I'll just go play Kaiserreich then. See what all the hubbub is about.

With the mountains bypassed, the assault through Korea proves rapid. What forces the IJA and IJN can spare are undermanned thanks to the losses Japan suffered in attacking China's shores, and they cannot withstand the entire Guomin Geming Jun barreling down upon them from the north. Early in December the P'yongyang falls, and the forces which occupy it are met with the deafening cheers of the Korean people there. The day before the white man's new year, the city of Seoule, the Japanese capital on the peninsula, is captured; the crowd which greets the advancing Republican army is so loud that it significantly slows the army's progress through the city. Unfortunately for the vengeful Chinese spirit, by now well aware of what the Chinese do to Japanese civilians, almost all were evacuated long beforehand; those who are found are still brutally treated in reprisal. Many of their old colonial subjects sell out those who remain.

It is the First of January, one-thousand nine-hundred and forty years since the birth of Christ. It is one month and seven days until the Year of the Dragon; Japan is beaten.

On the 30th of January, after cutting off their routes of escape and isolating them in the interior, Chinese forces under the operational command of Major General Fu Zuoyi begin an assault on the final Japanese position in Korea, at Taegu. The Japanese commanding officer, Fushimi Hiroyasu, swears to fight to the last in the name of the Emperor.

Unfortunately, the majority of his troops are starving and out of bullets. Eventually Hiroyasu orders a final bayonet charge, and his men are viciously slaughtered to the last in a hail of fire. Honorable for them and precisely what the Chinese forces wanted anyway, Zuoyi jokes that the Japanese did them a favor with their "bastard code of honor."

Japanese occupation of the mainland is over. The Japanese Empire is now an Empire of islands alone, and though they remain at war with the Republic, they are no longer a serious threat.

The Republic has won.

The Republic of China in the very hour of her victory. Although Jiang wished to re-annex the portions of Shanxi which were occupied by Mao, with his forces in Korea wiping out the final elements of resistance there, he is reluctantly forced to agree to allow the communist leader to take the territory. God every time I try to get back into Memers Kings it manages to piss me off in some way.

They fucking shot themselves in the foot with the fucking fantasy empires. Because the "Empire of Francia" (lol) is pretty much only France, they had to break up France into meme kingdoms for balance. It makes no sense that your endgame as a Spanish or French ruler is to style yourself an emperor. Even then, they added custom empires now if you want to do like Charlemagne so there's no reason to keep all the ahistorical bullshit DE JURE empires.
It makes absolutely no fucking sense that you can just have king vassals like it's no big deal. A king isn't a vassal holy shit.

It makes no fucking sense that as the middle ages progress you work your way toward becoming a state with imperial roman administration.

They had a great concept with the de jure/de facto distinction but as patches went on they made the de jure mechanic less and less relevant, while it is in fact the solution to most of the problems the game have. They would make the game so much better by emphasizing the de Jure mechanic and making them deeper than "100 years drift", by having certain decisions and casus belli interfere with de jure kingdoms. The Pope in particular should have a massive influence in that.

Neither Li Jishen or Long Yun expected a Republican victory, much less a rapid and total one. They anticipated that their forces would be necessary merely to hold the Republic up, not to assist in its glorious march into Korea. Yet the march into Korea is precisely what has happened; less than three years after the beginning of hostilities, the Empire of Japan has been left broken and shamed. But more than that, the Guomin Geming Jun has become totally professional, and totally loyal to Jiang.

The Warlords were able to survive because central control in Nanjing was weak, their own armies were powerful, and loyalty to Jiang was not absolute. None of these things is true any longer; Nanjing is mighty, having centralized itself out of necessity to resist the Japanese assaults, the Guomin Geming Jun is huge whilst the Warlords have given up their entire forces, and Jiang is universally beloved. They can no longer exist in the limbo between loyalty and independence which they once did.

As a mark of the loyalty which Jiang earned from him following his victories in Shanghai, Long Yun willingly surrenders Yunnan to central control in return for a permanent position as the governor of Shanghai. Although Li Jishen initially puts on a brave face and offers resistance, when he realizes most of his soldiers are now totally integrated into the Guomin Geming Jun and are loyal to Jiang, he folds. He is tried for corruption (the other option was treason, but Jiang did not want him dead) and found guilty, but given a minimal punishment of confiscated finances in return for continued support of the Republic and a willing and total surrender of his lands.

The death throes of the Qing are being reversed. China is becoming whole once again.

Restarting an AAR I never completed for god knows what reason.

>First of January, Shōwa XI
It its the eleventh year of the Shōwa era.
Since his ascendance to the Chrysanthemum Throne, our Emperor has seen the Empire begin it's fractured society and economy undergo a slow recovery. In the years before his reign, the Empire was shocked by the fall of France and Britain, crippling its industry, and bringing the influence of Syndicalism to it's borders. Riots, depression, an earthquake, and an attempt on the Emperor's life has brought about martial law and the threat of the possible destruction of the Empire as a whole.

Now, with a resurgent Qing and a faltering German Empire, Japan may once again be brought to the field of battle. The Qing will seek to regain Manchuria, and the Germans may lash out in their death throes. To the south the Australasian Confederation sits isolated and murmurs of a Syndicalist revolt within Indonesia have reached Tokyo. With a potential fracturing of the United States, the bold may seize territory during the turmoil.

The last decade has been, all things considered, rather stable. A plot by young naval cadets to murder Prime Minister Tsuyoshi was uncovered by the police and the plotters arrested and his life was again threatened by Korean nationalists. Tsuyoshi's rule has been marked by increasing ultra-nationalist agitation and the complete loss of civilian control of the Imperial Army. His attempts to reign in the military has drawn the ire of both ultranationalists who believe he seeks to shackle the power of Japan and reformers who believe he is only paying lipservice to the anti-military crowd.

The following years will be tumultuous for Japan.

The 7th of February, 1940: the Year of the Dragon begins. With celebrations already planned, Jiang uses the holiday for a second purpose: celebrating the defeat of the Japanese, and the victory of China over its opponents, both internal and external. Although China's national day would be celebrated on the 3rd of February (the day of final Japanese surrender on the mainland and the bowing of the southern warlords) in the future, for the first two years following the Japanese defeat it is celebrated on the 7th.

Parades are held in every major city; civilians from Guangxi to Changchun to Seoule march and sing, cheering the defeat of Japan and the victory of the Generalissimo. A huge awards ceremony is held in Beijing; almost every commanding General is given at least some minor order, and all are given the newly-minted Order of Victory of Resistance against Aggression, a ribbon designating participation in the victorious capture of Manchuria and Korea, but four are decorated above all else. Xu Yuanquan, commander of the 1st Juntuan, is decorated with the Honour Saber of the Awakened Lion, Grade 2--the second-highest award which can be granted by the Republic--while Jiang himself, He Yingqin, and Fu Zuoyi are all awarded the Honor Saber, Grade 1, the highest military award which can ever be granted by the Republic.

The same day, orders are given for all militia divisions to redeploy to Beijing and to be reorganized and retrained into fully operational infantry groups. Although the war with Japan on the mainland is over, more battles must yet be fought before the losses brought on by the death throes of the Qing might fully be repaired, and China made whole.

And Jiang has not forgotten the Japanese.

Ever since the constitutional restoration in 1926 Japan has been, in essence, a two party state. The conservative Rikken Seiyukai (Association of Friends of the Constitutional Government) and the liberal Minseito (Democratic Party), formally the Kenseikai (Constitutional Government Association), have vied for control. Upset at Tsuyoshi's policies the agrarian population of Japan has began to turn away from the Rikken Seiyukai. The Minseito party is in a position where they can break the Seiyukai majority in the Diet. The presence of the new Shakai Taishuto (Socialist Masses Party) could potentially split the left-wing vote enough to allow the Seiyukai to keep their majority

The results of the election were counted by the end of the day:
>The Seiyukai have defended their absolute majority

The long investment into the naval and air forces have proven valuable, and although the production of the Republic's first ponderous battleships is a slow thing, the Republic is at least set to see her first true air forces produced within a few months. This reorganization means nothing, however, unless it results in the reunification of China. While Jiang could order an invasion of Mao's clique, he knows that without a clear reason to his reputation would suffer greatly, both among his own people and those of the West; the communists helped to fight the Japanese, after all, and took comparatively little in the peace (even if that was by design).

As such, Jiang begins to send spies over the border into Mao's territory to infiltrate local communist groups, rile up peasants, and encourage the government to behave more belligerently toward the Republic. All Jiang needs to put the communists down permanently is a pretext, and the continued distraction of the Soviets.

If you're worried about difficulty, Germany and the Commune of France are the easiest. Unfortunately it's kinda hard to say that one or the other is definitively easier, because a lot depends on how events go, but Germany has to deal with a lot more shit even if it has more base IC, so most people would probably say France.

If you're just looking for a fun playthrough, there are a lot. The Qing are good, as are the CSA/AUS (the two new American tags in the Second ACW), and I like playing Austria as well. Probably the best nation for flavor which isn't Germany or the Commune is Russia, though.

Several months later, Germany shocks the world again by outflanking the French Maginot Line, seizing control of the Netherlands and Belgium, and annexing northern France unto themselves. A rump state based in Vichy has been produced in the south, and it seems as if the German war machine is truly unstoppable on the continent.

The Italian, on the other hand, leaves much to be desired. They have lost Tirana to the Greeks.

Facing extreme production and upgrade needs and still critically lacking in rare materials, in early May Jiang makes an agreement to the British whereby the newly-strengthened Republic, which boasts a great stockpile of wealth following its re-acquisition of its ancient territories, will pay the Anglos in return for massive supplies of rare material shipments from India, bypassing the danger that the Japanese will sink any during transport.

The deal is not particularly favorable to the Republic, and it will not be sustainable in the long-term, but in the short-term it will not only allow the Republic's industry to operate at maximum capacity (and thereby reduce the unfortunately burdensome population of unemployed in the cities), but create a stockpile which might help her to hold out until more efficient means of rare material refining and acquisition can be perfected.

Two months into the Republic's stockpiling of supplies (and hemorrhaging of the little funds it was able to stockpile during the war), Germany secures a further coup in Europe: the annexation of Yugoslavia and the relief of Italian troops fighting in Greece. But, as ever, there are other important matters to attend to. With the Republic's first new air wings produced and the infantry beginning to receive their new equipment, there's finally enough spare material to begin retraining the militia forces and formalizing both their equipment and organization. The cost in terms of equipment is significant, far greater than Jiang had anticipated, but so long as the trade deal with the British continues, China can afford the costs. The rearmament continues as planned.

In late October, following the total reorganization of the militias and several leaps forward in airframe design, Jiang orders the production of two full wings of naval bombers for the RoCAF. Jiang is well-aware that the Republic cannot compete with Japan on the high seas even with a fully up-to-date force of battleships, and so banks on being able to use air power to secure control of the seas surrounding Japan when the time for its invasion finally comes. China need not achieve total naval superiority; it need only be able to force the Japanese to hunker in their ports, and victory will come naturally.

Niigata has always been a relic. While the rest of Japan moved forward together into the future the old powers that be stood fast there. This reluctance to change only exasperated the agricultural crisis in in the 1930s. The tensions have boiled over in the village of Obaden where a dispute over rising rent costs for a corner store have culminated in an open riot. Spurred on by Syndicalist agitators the local villages of Kisaki and Wata have joined the rioters.

The local constabulary must deal with this quickly as the trade unions threaten to join in.

A few short days after Jiang orders the production of China's naval bomber wings, China's first specialty naval assault personnel are commissioned outside of Qingdao. Although they've been trained rather poorly for naval landings, considering the Republic lacks a meaningful transport fleet, they are nevertheless far more especially prepared for naval operations than their fellows, and receive constant training as new doctrines and tactics for naval landings are developed. When the time comes to invade Japan, these men will be at the very forefront of the Republic's vengeful strike.

>14th of April, Shōwa XI
The attempts to negotiate with the rioters has yielded very little. In fact the worst fears of the police has been realized with the local trade unions now taking part. The largest trade union in Nagaoka occupied a large radio factory, demanding higher wages and better working conditions. In an effort to send the unionists back to work the police shot and killed one 17 year old worker while an older manager was fatally struck in the head. Seeing this local non-union workers began to strike in solidarity and the entire industrial district of Nagaoka has been occupied by rioters. If their demands are not met they are threatening to join with trade unions nation wide in a general strike.

The continued negotiations have allowed the rioters to spread their message throughout the home islands, particularly in the northeast. The Shakai Taishuto are fanning the flames of revolution and quite possibly funding rioters according to the latest intelligence reports. The government and army general staff are growing tired of the riots and are worried at the possibility of a Syndicalist revolution.

In late November of 1940, after several months of doing what it could to recoup the losses it had suffered against China in the war on the mainland, Emperor Showa officially signed the tripartite pact with Germany and Italy, thereby joining the Axis powers and opening a war against the Allies in the Pacific.

Although China and Japan are not yet at peace, Tokyo feels as though the situation between them is a stalemate: China lacks the naval strength to commit to landings on the Japanese homeland, while, grudgingly, Tokyo must admit that the Guomin Geming Jun is far too powerful for the IJN to make any effectual landing on the Chinese mainland. The Emperor and his cabinet reason that this situation with China will be maintained for some time, but, critically, without the resources of Manchuria and Korea, they feel it is unsustainable; eventually, China will outproduce the Empire and the war will be lost.

The solution to this, in Tokyo's opinion, is to gather territory elsewhere. Only with additional resources and productive capacity will Japan be able to recuperate its disastrous losses and lead an offensive against China to reverse the disasters brought on by the Kwantung. The obvious power to support in order to accomplish this objective is Germany; war with Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands will allow Japan to seize significant territory in the Pacific for its own war effort, and German diplomatic pressure on Vichy France will allow the Emperor to secure control of Indochina immediately.

While Germany has not entered the war against China in return for Japan entering Germany's conflict, the tensions between Germany and the Republic rocket to new heights. Jiang is now quite pleased that the Soviets signed the non-aggression pact; a German-Japanese alliance on his borders is far more dangerous than the weak garrisons the Soviets have in the east.

You've blobbed a bit too much in north Africa for my liking desu. Pic related is my plan for Europe. I think northern France is realistically the only part of France that England/UK would be able to control.
Red is direct control, with all European cultures being an accepted part of the empire
Blue is vassals (Pretty much only Aquitaine, but I'm thinking about adding Provence / burgundy into that mix)
Yellow is either potential vassal, or directly controlled by me.

I will be controlling NA / Pooistan / Australia / New Zealand / South Africa / Hong Kong / Cyprus, and either allowing the shitskins to leave in peace and extort all the wealth I can out of them, or systemically destroy them, and replace them with brits.

I'm not interested in blobbing, but having a British Empire that is somewhat realistic.

With the production of the Republic's naval bombers complete, for the first time since 1936 industrial centers have no outstanding projects upon which to work. To resolve this, Jiang orders two major radar centers constructed which will allow the Republic to monitor the passage of Japanese naval vessels and air forces near the Chinese coast. Although a new technology, Jiang is quite confident that they will prove helpful in planning the final assault on Japan, whenever that day comes.

The First of January, one-thousand nine-hundred and forty-one years since the birth of Christ. It is twenty-seven days until the Year of the Snake begins, and thirty-eight until the celebration of the Republic of China's national day.

While the Premier is out of the country negotiating with the American government regarding the sharing of industrial production, the Japanese launch a futile probe at Sariwon, to see if they can secure a beachhead in southern Korea. Although their marines do succeed in capturing the port, they would soon be forced back out by local garrisons.

While President Roosevelt did pledge industrial support to the Chinese, in actuality none was ever forthcoming. This was but the beginning of a long series of tensions between Nanjing and Washington which would drive the two nations further apart over the coming years.

>The early morning of April 24th, Shōwa XI
The strikers must be crushed. For too long they have openly conspired against His Majesty the Emperor, agitating and posturing for a republican revolution. With their refusal of the Imperial cabinet's generous reform package they have signed their own death warrant. In the north the Niigata Commune has unfurled the red banner and has declared open revolt against the government. Recent army and navy maneuvers have seen the bulk of the military and marines transferred to the mainland. The duty therefore falls upon the Imperial Guard to put the Syndicalists to the sword.

Of course, initial American failures to provide lend-lease are entirely understandable, and indeed were forgiven by the Japanese--on the 8th of January, 1941, the Japanese launched a devastating strike on Pearl Harbor, damaging much of the American Pacific surface fleet. Apparently worried about their ability to project force against the British without capturing an intermediary point, the Japanese have set their sights on the Philippines as a grand staging ground from which to establish their dominance of the entire Pacific, and to ready their glorious arms to march against China.

Showa is clearly quite delusional, but the entry of America to the war is a great boon to Britain, which was beginning to look quite haggard. So, too, is it a boon to Jiang--with luck the Americans will crush Japan's naval capabilities and the later invasion of the home isles will be a simple affair. And even if they do not, they will certainly keep Japan distracted and weak for the Republic's later glorious strike.

In early February the Japanese plan to seize the Philippines gets underway. Operating from their seized base at Saigon, the IJN lands several marine groups near Manila with the goal of securing the Philippines within the month. Unless they do, it seems difficult to imagine the Japanese being able to project any serious force in the Pacific, following their prior disastrous defeats.

Sorry, forgot I had that on. I'll take that as a (you), person of melanin.

So, having dice modifiers is for the whole "lol random battle consequences!", but this is bullshit. Better armies, better prep, better shit should always be better. It should never be the case that a better army gets rekt by a worse army due to RNG.

The system I call the Officer Quality system runs off of "classes" of Officers that you can draw from. In the same way that Army Tradition gives you good generals based on score, Officer Quality score is averaged (and floored to integer) over 15 years to give the quality of an Officer Class.

There are Three Officer Ranks, (Officer Progression) and Officer Classes, (which are separate "groups" of Officers). Green, Veteran, and Old Guard make up the 15 year cycle sets. If you are a weak/small/poor nation, you might only get one Officer class, which means you can only have one Officer Rank at a time.

Example with three Officer Classes:

Each "/" separates each 15 year cycle

Class A: Green / Veteran / Old Guard

Class B: Veteran / Old Guard / Green

Class C: Old Guard / Green / Veteran

The Officer Quality of each of these classes changes every 15 years based on the Officer Quality Difference and what rank the class is. Green, for example, might get 50% of the difference in Officer Quality, Veteran might get 95%, and Old Guard might get 15%

So if OQ changes by +10, the new Greens get +5 added to their class, Vets get +9 (floored), and Old Guard get +1.

OQ does cap out, however. This is to push for military reforms when the Officer Doctrine gets too "Old Fashioned" and tactics from the previous 50 years no longer hold weight. So if you sit and 90 OQ and are stagnant, your Green class will not gain any OQ for their Class.
To combat the stagnation, you can "burn" OQ score and get Military points/Money/whatever back, to incentivize building up and burning down doctrine. 1/?

The maneuvers are perfectly executed and a massive pleasure to the crowds of peasants and city dwellers which turn out to watch the now-professional Guomin Geming Jun perform, but the purpose of gathering the entire main force of the army is more than just to celebrate China's new national day.

In the course of the long struggle against Japan, China's Generals grew in skill to become some of the most skilled military commanders in the world. Although Germany's army could now contest her, it is likely that the Republic still boasts the greatest number of expert Generals in the world, and their combat manuals are already being read to great effect, both in Europe and elsewhere. Yet their number and organization has not meaningfully changed since 1937, when the Guomin Geming Jun's leadership structure was hastily thrown together to defend against the now-defunct Kwantung; in other words, the leadership structure is outdated.

The lull in affairs, and the presence of the entire Guomin Geming Jun in a single location, provides the perfect opportunity for Jiang to reorganize, reassign, and replace several leaders to maximize combat effectiveness.

Because war is pressing.
>>
>>171439719
This not only makes the mechanic a system which the player uses often, but is also another facet of the game which they can min-max over 15 year periods, building up a superior class of Officers who become legends. Since Old Guard OQ change is only 15%, you could have an Officer Core that is somewhat decent for quite a while. This also makes the player care more about the military, instead of it being "just keep Army Tradition up, game over man".

This does allow for OQ sniping, where a nation with stagnant 90 OQ can get raped by a 0-60 OQ nation. But this balances power, and allows for players to become more skilled in the wars they choose, planning them.

Also EU4 needs a fucking alert calendar. "Remind Me: Remove Byzantine 1453"

Bonuses should exist for having high OQ, like Morale and Discipline, much in the same way high Army Tradition works, but this will allow a more dynamic play style to emerge rather than building up army trad and praying dice rolls don't assrape you.

Military Tactic Cards should also be a thing, that get phased in and out of service for the military. Soft Counters/ Hard Counters for these cards should exist, but in such a way that there is an "Objectively Better" option, a "All-Rounder" option, and a "BTFO Obj Better but get rekt even harder by All Rounder" option. The effectiveness of these tactics should be determined by OQ score.
2/2. Thank you for reading.

After the festivities end that evening, Jiang meets with his generals and informs them of their deployment orders: effective immediately, they will travel to the border with Mao's communist forces and prepare for a general offensive. Sufficient infiltration of the Maoist forces has long since succeeded, and the communards have been belligerent for some time; the time to crush them, and in so doing bring unity to China, is ripe.

The revolutionaries have been thrown into the sea. The leaders of the revolt have been given the death penalty and and their execution will take place outside the city hall in Niigata. The families of collaborators and fighters have reported their family members missing. A link between a series of passenger aircraft flights between Niigata and Vladivostok and the disappearances is suspected as the passenger manifests have many discrepancies.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has been assassinated. A group of young left wing naval cadets entered into the PM's residence and fired upon the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister's last words were "If I could speak, you would understand" to which the young socialists replied "Dialogue is useless." Suzuki Kisaburo has quickly replaced Tsuyoshi and the Admiralty Board has already begun the process of a court martial.

In late March, while Jiang's forces are still being redeployed, he receives horrible news: the Germans have launched a strike against Russia, breaking the terms of their non-aggression pact and plunging continental Europe into war anew.

This is especially worrying to Jiang; at best it would seemingly mean that the Soviets seize control of much of Europe--which would almost certainly mean that they would turn their eyes next upon China--and at worst that the Germans crush the Soviets and could theoretically launch a joint operation with the Japanese against the Republic. Precisely what Jiang thought could not come to pass thanks to the non-aggression pact is now a looming threat.

Ruefully, it occurs to the Premier that Showa must have known the German plans. If he had not, he would never have been so brazen as to strike at the Americans.

Yet, for all that, the Japanese are not performing particularly well. Several months after the initial invasion of the Philippines their forces are still bogged down without support, and their Siamese puppet has folded to the British; their continued control of Indochina seems tenuous at best. They made a gamble that they could strengthen themselves through further war, but it appears that Showa underestimated the tenacity of his enemies, and how deeply the Republic of China had scarred his armed forces. Even if Germany were to secure an unprecedented coup and fully defeat the Soviets, the Japanese could not possibly meaningfully assist them anytime soon.

On the 8th of May, reading a statement from Nanjing, Premier Jiang Jieshi issues a declaration of war to Mao Zedong's communist forces. Citing their continued belligerence in the face of peaceful relations on the part of the Republic of China and their unlawful holding of land and farming of taxes which by rights belongs to the Republic, Jiang characterizes the invasion as "benign to the citizens of China, but a fury to those internationalists who have stirred up hatred for our home and our people."

Although Mao appeals to the international community--particularly the Soviets--for aid, nothing is forthcoming. The Soviet Union is falling apart at the hands of the German invasion, the United States and Britain both feel they need positive relations with China, and neither Japan or Germany are in a position to provide assistance. Mao is alone, and facing down all twelve Jun of the Chinese Revolutionary Army.

Alright, that's it for tonight. Tomorrow will start off with the war with the dirty reds, and barring any catastrophes the AAR should also finish tomorrow.

>August 1, Shōwa XI

The conflict between the Centralists and Resorationists has come to a head. The head of the Resorationists within the army, Obata, believes that war will come to Japan before we could possibly industrialize and mobilize. Therefore future conflict must see the enemy armies quickly destroyed through superior overwhelming firepower. His counterpart, Nagata of the Centralists, believes that Japan must immediately prepare for total war. Our industry must be expanded and the military must rapidly grow and modernize to prepare for future war and conquest.

The Resorationists are by and large anti-capitalist, anti-parliamentarian, and anti-oligarchism. They believe that power has been stripped away from the Emperor by the parliament and that the only solution to the favoritism and corruption ripe in the Diet is to dissolve it entirely and vest all power into the Emperor. They are fierce monarchists and ultra-nationalists. Among its ranks are Sadao Araki and Jinzaburō Masaki.

The Centrists, on the otherhand, believe that the solution to the aforementioned problems are to militarize politics by placing generals and admirals in key positions within the government while co-operating with the present establishment. It's most fervent supporters included Hideki Tōjō as well as a shocking amount of young military academy graduates.

**The choice isn't actually in this event but it will come up in a following event**
The head of the general staff must soon pick his replacement
>Support Nagata and the Centralists
>Support Obata and the Resorationists

(As an aside I think there's an error in this event chain. They claim that the Restorationist Obata is "Obata Toshirio" where as I believe it's supposed to be Hideyoshi Oabata.)

Swear fealty to memassids
To handle revocations either play it hardball with favors and shit (assassinating the Caliph during a revocation war will end in a white peace), or go the new EZ PZ way and falsely convert to Islam for the time being.
Then just grow your powerbase north and east (the whole Kingdom of Khotan is just FREE MONEY) until you're powerful enough for a big independence faction or wait for the sunni uprising and their 50K troops to keep the Caliph busy.

I could have gone satanist too but it would have been way to easy so I decided not to go with that.

I'm never doing that again though. Zunbils have very little flavour and it was pretty much a more boring version of the Zoroastrian campaign. Zoroastrian was much more fun and unique because wincest mechanics.

>The 9th of August, Shōwa XI
The Triads of the Legation cities have contacted the Yakuza and the members of the Diet under their thumb. The Triads propose that the government of Japan should fiercely pursue a renegotiated treaty with the Legation Cities, including but not limited to a military alliance and possibly complete control of their government.

>August 25, Showa 11

The Tanaka regime introduced the Peace Preservation Act in early 1924 following Anarchist agitation in Kanto and Syndicalist assassination attempts. The act curtailed civil rights but was repealed after the Constitutional Restoration in 1926. Now,following the Niigata riots, Prime Minister Kisaburo wants to reintroduce the act modified into the "National Security Act." Despite criticism within his own party the Prime Minister has found support in a cross-party coalition lead by Chikuhei and Kenzo who have declared it the "last bulwark of constitutional government."

>The Act is forced through
>Public Opinion and the opposition defeat the Act

When the AAR is "finished" do you mean you just stopped playing at that point, or do you flesh out an ending situation

>Conservatives
Rikken Seiyukai (Association of Friends of the Constitutional Government)
>Liberals
Minseito (Democratic Party), formally the Kenseikai (Constitutional Government Association)
>Socialist/Syndicalist catch all
Shakai Taishuto (Socialist Masses Party)

>Far Right Ultranationalist Monarchists
Restorationist/Imperial Way Faction. They want to have a second Meiji restoration and completely dissolve the parliament.
>Far Right Ultranationalists
Centrists (For central control, not centre on a left-right scale). They want a highly centralized military and increased military influence in the Diet.

In real life the Centrists (Tōseiha) and the Imperial Way Faction (Kōdōha) unified during the war into the Imperial Rule Assistance Association (Taisei Yokusankai) I believe.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong with this, I know fuck all about Japan.

In my AAR we've put the Restorationists in power. Depending on how people respond we may get an ultranationalist coup

Really a shame to see how cucked Japan is nowadays. The socio-political structure of Imperial Japan was quite unique.

I always spend at least a few posts going over some post-game events, usually in the form of general trends, once I reach the conclusion point. This one will probably be relatively brief, but I'll still have a post or two going over some post-war geopolitics when it's done.
