So I played this game a bit last year but didn't stick around or keep my account. Lately I've had a mighty need to fuck around as a tank, though, so I guess I'll ask you guys for advice.

Last time I went mostly French (because I am a raging Francophile) and while the Renault FT and especially the Char B1 were a pleasure most of the time, I usually felt outclassed. I had a fair bit of trouble really getting an idea of what I wanted to even do in the game, especially with a class like artillery feeling nearly completely useless. On top of that, the perma-death was agony- I'd usually then have to sit around staring at the screen for 15 minutes while some mooks drive around the map after each other but too afraid to engage. That or I'd end up the only person left on my team and wind up being the mook driving around the map.

If I want to try this game again and actually enjoy it, what exactly should I look at doing? Or should I just fuck-off and avoid the game like it is anathema?

understanding spotting mechanics is very important and it is way too common (and frustrating) that shitters with thousands of battles dont understand how they work
the game can be more complex than it looks on first glimpse but most of the stuff is learned by trial and error and memorizing stuff like reload times, alpha damage, map positions, etc
ideally you want to platoon with better players who can teach you things on the fly which would speed getting better alot
maybe consider joining some noob clan, i know there is one for german players who platoon/mentor with s4 and other players from good clans

The basics of random battles, I call them Battlecruiser's 10 Commandments.

Go where other tanks of your type go; usually heavy tanks go for a meat grinder corridor, lights and mediums head for open terrain, etc. This will vary by map but you'll pick it up naturally as you play.

The exception is if your whole team goes down one route and leaves the other flanks exposed. In this case you should follow the lemming train because defending a flank alone will just get you swarmed and killed

Camo: For lights and some mediums essential, more so in lights where its better than repair because if you're getting shot you're already dead.

Firefighting: Depends on the tank, not usually worth taking since you can just use premium fire extinguishers. Save it for later

Brothers in arms: Must have but you'll find lots of different opinions on when you should take this. Use your own judgement based on what tank you want that crew in

Mentor: Don't bother, everything else is more useful

Recon: This should be obvious, unless you're a slow ass shitbox you should get this as a third or fourth skill.

Jack of all trades: Yes, its useful, but take it later, you should be shooting them and making sure they can't respond

Off-Road Driving: Increases acceleration, get this if your tank already has good hull traverse

play the attacking side and use your teammates to your advantage, namely using them getting shot at as an opportunity to do damage.

A game will play out one of two ways depending on what you choose to do

>attack fails and you spend the next 2-3 minutes getting encircled and getting angry

>either you tip the scales and cause the attack to succeed, you do nothing and it succeeds anway, or the attack fails you die and can go play a different tank.

Just keep in mind that attack doesn't mean mindlessly advance forward. Others will do so, though, so try and use it to your advantage. This is going to be trial and error but just keep trying new things until you find combinations that work.

iirc the t-34 was fun, but I think the derp sherman is still better?? idk. I don't really play low tiers when I play. Everything I'm telling you is from the experience of a high tier player and there's a big difference between low tier and high tier gameplay, mainly because of the increase in ttk.

Anyway, like i've said before, don't get isolated. If you're the only thing to shoot at you're going to be pinned down, and god help you if any good players see you by yourself, they'll use their team pinning you down to drive over there and extract your hitpoints.


two general rules of thumb,

The team that gets 2/3rds of the map, barring any supreme acts of retardation, wins.

and battles are not a 15v15 but more like a simultaneous series of 3-4v3-4 so the faster you finish your skirmish the faster those numbers can be added to the adjacent skirmishes, and the faster you finish the more hitpoints your teamies are more likely to have which will help as well.

If you drive a slow heavy, you're forced to pick a direction and stick with it, and suffer the consequences associated with lack of flexibility.

You can see what tanks the enemy team has right from the loading screen. Tanks tend to go to certain areas depending on what type they are. For example: mediums tend to go forest on murovanka, heavies tend to go city on ruinberg, lights and mediums tend to go hill or tracks on himmelsdorf, etc.

That sort of thing comes from playing the game more.

Altogether it's much better at poking than the 62a. Despite the disappointing turret the tank is just a lot more enjoyable to me. The 5 km/h advantage is a nice appendage to a tank that's already arguably better.

I want to get both of the tier 6 swede tanks, but the tier 5's are really dissapointing. The td's gun can be derpy as fuck, and the med's gun penetration is just a bit too low. But the med also seems really fragile, it's like every time I take a shot some module or crewmembers is dead.

The physics changes are really something. New hiding spots are open by how you can carry momentum up slopes AND RIDDING CURVED WALLS by momentum. This shits golden, my eyes are open.
