The Mad Cat Mk II doesn't bring much new to the table, but it'll be great, like most clan assaults. The Uziel will be ok, though many of it's variants are trash under the MWO system. The Cougar is just a tweaked Addar, so it will be pretty good, though not ground breaking.

The Annihilator will be absolute trash, unless RACs somehow are able to bridge the gap between IS/Clan ballistics, and the inherit weight disparity between the factions, and also be overpowered enough to make piloting a chassis that can crest a hill, and then still need 10 more seconds to get it's weapons over the hill as well, worth it.

I'm biased, because the MkII is my favorite mech - so I naturally got the full deal Ultimate on that one. I'm getting the basic Annihilator package too, because I've been asking for that mech for a while (color me just as surprised as you all are though that the Fafnir and Blood Asp weren't the first mechs to hit the ground).

I don't see the Cougar being very good, personally. It's Timber Wolf speed in a mech under half the weight. It can pack a lot of firepower for its size, but it won't be good as a "light mech". It'll play more like a fragile light-medium.

The Uziel has the benefit of high mounts, but the drawback of a low cockpit. This means you can hill peak pretty well, but your mech shows up over the hill before you can see over it yourself, so you might take a few more shots than otherwise. I think it has the potential to be a solid medium, though. Just not my taste or style.

And back to the Annihilator, it has the problem of super high cockpit with lower arms. Some of its hardpoint locations seem decent, but it will be bad at hills. Corner peaking it should be OK with - and the Hero variant can fit 4x MRM30s. So.

Taking MWO's game mechanics into account as well as likely hit boxes for the Uziel, I think you will find her to be a disappointment, the ST's are going to be easy to hit and XL check. The low mounted cockpit is going to give you Archer type problems with the high mounts that are on the Uziel.... I just hope that everyone that wanted it, will understand that the Uziel is not going to be the "epic" medium mech they are expecting it to be, as well as the Annihilator is going to be just awful.... Yea, the IS really got shafted with these mech choices...

Battletech as a setting has a whole licensed mercenary system acknowledged by all the Great Houses, right? I'm guessing the difference between mercenary and pirate is basically that Comstar has approved your unit, you stay within the limits they and the Houses have defined, and while you might get screwed here or there you're also able to do things like take contracts for different sides, visit civilized space, and retire somewhere you haven't pissed off too badly without getting arrested or vigilante-killed (probably). I'm assuming your force in the campaign will be "legal" mercenaries, which I guess might make keeping ownership of your weird unique dropship a little trickier since that's pretty hard to hide on a unit manifest.

It sounds like it's just another lever of social control developed by Comstar to keep the Houses weak and divided, since it creates a large floating pool of military force that can be bought to prop up the losing side of any major war and maintain the status quo, as well as encourage low-level raiding and feuding by providing an easy way for nobles to bulk out their forces outside of the direct control of their liege. Nobody in a position to win control of the whole Sphere would allow an official body to exist where people are legally allowed to take jobs fighting the new government, they'd have to abolish or completely reform the system - I'm guessing under the current rules contracts against Comstar were forbidden since they're meant to be the 'neutral guarantor', so whoever the new boss is would at least take that spot.

Don't forget MRMs do half as much damage as SRMs, the same as LRMs. Damage potential with SRMs will almost always be higher, not only because of tonnage constraints but crit slots too. You can't even fit 2 MRM30s in a side torso with an XL engine.

They are basically dumb fire LRMs that go in a straight line. I hope they have decent velocity at least.

It would be fine if they tweak the launch speed of MRMs versus Clan LRMs. There are also modifiers you can stack onto it like launching more than one missile per tick, effectively multiplying the fire rate. 5 missiles per tick at Clan LRM rates shouldn't be too unwieldy.

Plus there's velocity to consider; we just don't know enough to pass judgement besides that it will definitely be the better compromise choice for mechs with mixed hardpoints than either of the alternatives.

I don't play MWO (haven't been brainwashed to that extent by you ComStar types yet) but the MkII was my favorite 'Mech in MW4 multiplayer. I like to load up with an asymmetrical mix of LRM10, LRM15, small and medium pulse lasers and go to town making the opposing team wonder just what the heck is that loadout and learn the hard way that the primary weapons are 2x LBX/20, 2x LBX/10 on different interlocks for a continuous stream of cluster munitions.

The fact that back in the day a lot of MW4 players hated the MkII design, just made blowing things up sweeter.

In anticipation of MRMs and all the other tech, I've installed MW4:Vengeance again and boy it hasn't aged well. It was my favourite game back then and the title that introduced me to the universe but I had a better time even with the MW2 playthrough I've done a couple of weeks ago.

MRMs were probably my favourite weapon because they were the least awkward between the railgun style lasers and the ACs that are just repainted lasers.

Say what you want, I've been spoiled by MWO. It actually is by far the best Mechwarrior game we got yet from a pure gameplay perspective. With all the grind and questionable business decisions from PGI it's easy to forget that. Now if we only had combined warfare and single player missions in MWO...

That may be the dumbest way I've ever seen ATMs implemented, but ATMs are very good. Base is 3x12 damage at SRM ranges, 2x12 at LRM ranges, and then 1x12 at longer-than-LRM ranges.

There's no reason for a Clan machine to use SRMs or LRMs if ATMs are in play, especially if they're direct fire.

Tabletop Light PPCs have slightly better range than Inner Sphere ER Medium Lasers for the same heat and damage, but weigh 3x as much. They're not bad for assaults who're crit locked and need to kill some tonnage, but most of the time ER Mediums will serve you better.

Heavy Gauss does 25 damage base but is going to have a pretty crippling damage drop-off. 18 tons per unless my memory has failed me completely. Light Gauss Rifles are some of the better "light" ballistic weapons in tabletop so chances are they'll be garbage in MWO. They're still too heavy for most light `Mechs but are a good fit for lighter mediums with ballistics slots.

tabletop ATMs require an absolute shitload of ammo and require you to perfectly memorize which ammo is better at which ranges or else they underperform cLRMs by a lot - and even then they still underperform cLRMs a lot of the time. (they are definitely better than clan SRMs, which puts them in good company with almost every other weapon in tabletop battletech.) ATMs in tabletop are catnip for grogs. they're overcomplicated and only better than the simpler alternatives in very specific corner cases.

LPPCs are huge in tabletop. they neatly outrange all of the short and middling-range weapons, while still being light and heat efficient enough to fit on anything that isn't a light mech. they do not have "slightly" better range than an IS ERML: they have half again as much range, same as a PPC and longer than a cERML. barring some sort of nerf, LPPCs are probably going to be a big deal in MWO, since they have both their statistical advantages and the fact that they place all of their damage in one instant spot.

in tabletop, LGRs are too heavy for their relatively bad damage, but they have really long range. the range is the only reason to bother with them: they outrange both LRMs and regular gauss rifles.

I wasn't talking about tabletop, I was talking about PGI's implementation of ATMs since they can't figure out how to make ammo-switching work. Unless they have cooldowns that are significantly longer than SRMs (or fire in an arc like LRMs) they completely obsolete the Clan Streak SRM in MWO since they're useful at all ranges and their only downside is their weight, and they may do the same for standard SRMs unless you've got a lot of missile slots.

In a slot-limited `Mech like a Summoner, a 7-ton ATM-12 with a 36 damage (assuming PGI doesn't buff ATM damage like they did with both SRMs and LRMs) close-range alpha is significantly better than the stock LRM-15 or the single SRM-6 you can cram into its only missile slot.

Plus, there's also something hidden in PGI's fucked-up implementation: ATMs will be lock-on weapons for sure, which means we're basically getting iATMs in all but name.

PGI just announced 3 mechs I really like at one time (Uziel, Cougar, Madcat MKII). Now I need to decide if I want to get one of the 3, and which one.

I'm thinking the Uziel, but the Madcat MKII is tempting. I just don't enjoy playing Assaults that much, so I could pass on the Madcat MKII and the Annihilator (which is just ugly to me anyway). I really love the Cougar, but it will be a difficult beast to play in MWO with the low speed.

So many decisions.

So I WAS saving up for an atlas to fufill my dream of running directly into enemies at full throttle and alpha striking them until one of us is left standing, but this Banshee looks like it can pull that off pretty well too. I didn't see a specific build in the OP for the banshee, so I made one in the browser mechlab and wanted to know what I might be screwing up before spending cash. Is there such a thing as too many heatsinks on a brawling assault? Is that anywhere near enough AMS ammo? Should I bump up some of my med pulses to large at something elses expense? etc.

Also, is there anything I should actually know about Faction play before jumping in without a faction assigned? Does it basically give the same C-Bill/exp payout as normal matches?

it's a championship mech so it's the 'best' variant of the chassis and can take the 'best' loadout.

in this case, it's putting in small lasers FIRST into the torsos, THEn 3 LLAS in one side, and 2 in the other (iirc)

the small lasers aren't there to be used, they're there to force the LLAS up into the highmounts (which makes the retardedly tiny cancer dots right next to the cockpit whilt your puny small lasers take up FUGHEUG laser bulges in the bottom of the belly near the hips

The banshee is one of the best laser vomit poking mechs in the game, and the only thing that really competes with it in that arena is the battlemaster which is just slightly lighter but otherwise pretty much the same thing. It doesn't make for a very good brawler because it is all energy weapons, which are better for firing and then backing off to cool down. It's up there with the KDK3 as one of the mechs in the game where you should reliably be breaking 700-800 damage in a game if you don't make ridiculously bad decisions that get you killed early. Good games in the banshee will see greater than 1,000 damage, and they're not too rare.

Shove a small laser in the first laser slot on the banshee's torsos, then pile 3 large pulse lasers on the right side and 2 on the left, jam an XL400 into that bitch and load it full of heat sinks. Run around blasting people's faces off with staggered 3-2 large pulse laser shots while looking like Earl Hindman from Tooltime from behind whatever cover you can find.

The atlas is one of the best brawling assaults, but it really sucks at doing anything else that isn't brawling. You're totally at the mercy of your team while playing one.

In faction play you do everything as murderballs of 12 and wipe the enemy team from the map. If someone goes and does their own thing and doesn't die with everyone else, then your team will likely lose because you're fighting four series of 11v12s. The only exception to this is if the enemy team has even more people on their team being stupid.

So, after taking a deeper look into the packages, this is what I've come to conclude for now:

The Uziel will probably be decent and given my lore-friendly playstyle it will be hella awesome to pilote.
The Annihilator is one of my favorite 'Mechs, but it's speed will make it pretty much unusable in MW:O. You might get away with 4xLightGauss sniping, but meh. I'll get a few for CBills later on.
Cougar: I might get a couple at CBill release to do my Adder stuff with ECM cover, but I don't see any reason to chose it over my beloved Adder.
The MadCat II will probably be a good 'Mech that can do the standard Clan Assault stuff.

What I did notice though:
- There is no MASC and barely ECM. Especially with the low speed of the Cougar and Annihilator I'd expected these to have as MASC variant (prob. Hero). Heck, give that Annihilator Hero a 400 Engine and he would probably wreck everything in his way.
- None of the upgrades seem all that compelling. Sure, there are a few thing you can do better with the upgrades, but I am not seeing anything really interesting that'd require me to put in more money. (This is a player speaking who demises the Laser vomit Meta and refuses to play that. :P)

All together, I'll get the Uziel and MadCat II standard packs as mentioned, but I see absolutely no reason to invest any more right now.

Funny thing: my 'discount' Annihilator Direwolf (4xLB10X) will probably beat the original Annihilator in most categories. Kinda sad though.

As a PPC fan, the light and snub nose ppc will be featuring in at least 90% of my builds. ATMs sound interesting and might see some use too.

Awesome, I took your suggestions and this is what I got out of the ordeal. I'm more than a bit afraid of using XL engines but hell, I'm used to running around in my ACH with 40 armor on the CT so I think I could get used to it. I guess this mech is how I'll learn to get good at positioning and poking around corners.

The default build isn't bad with its standard engine and it can still do work, but the 400XL 5LPL version is about as optimal as it can get.
