If you want close combat, you should play DD.

USN starting from farragut zip around machine gunning down enemy destroyers and pestering cruisers and battleships with guns in-between terrain.
Their bullets are slower, but their guns can spin 360 degrees in combat so you can do crazy movements to dodge torps and still gun down a DD.
At t6 the torps are tolerable, at 7+ they're great (US torps are nearly invisible, making them get just as many hits as a japanese ship with twice as many tubes)

Ruski cyka blyat destroyers are also great fast gunboats. They can go 42.5+ knots so no shitty japanese has the speed to escape alive. Their bullets travel fast and straight, making it much easier to hit fast-moving destroyers with them or to hit long distance cruiser/BB before they turn (and USN shells fall in water harmlessly.)
The trade-off is that slav DD guns turn like battleship guns, so you travel in straight lines and fire in just one direction.
Torps are also invisible like USN. At 7 or lower they're got dog-shit range though, so they're used for punishing anyone who tries to get close to you (like US ships who are upset their bullets move so slowly they'll never hit you if you're 12km+)
At t8-t10 they get real torps. 8-10km range, still invisible, 10 on a side. Not bad enough to justify how amazingly better at gunfighting they are than Japan (except for akizuki)

Tier8 Akizuki is one japanese that has piles of 100mm guns with very short reload. It also only has 1x4 torpedos to balance out being a jap with actual firepower. A several minute cooldown torp-reload button lets it pretend to be a 2x4 torp boat every so often, but that's less torps than the ruski or US have at all times.

Would not advise going down japan though, too many useless nerfed ships on the way to their one fighter.

Yeah, you don't really want to be eating hits and you have good range so just spam HE at range, unless you can close to hunt DDs without getting blasted. Once you get to the Chappy and DMD you get to invisifire for a decent amount and it's generally a pretty good time.
It's kind of the same all the way to the Moskva, where the line turns in to some strange CA/BB hybrid where you can suddenly tank Hotel shells.

In this specific case, I watched our CV completely abandon us to try and snipe theirs.

I disagree with his choice of target, given that we could've used immediate help in the battle and he literally spent the entire match looking for the enemy CV, but what really set me off was that he first neglected his fighters, then pulled them off to protect his bombers, which had been discovered by the enemy.

So we fought, without cover and eyes, to be bombed from the sky and smoke, because the enemy carrier knew how to be a credit to team and ours was a waste of a slot. He could've done better by charging into battle and letting his secondaries score a few hits.
