If a character appears for a second, they're tagged. Not to mention that authors even add their own spin to the tags. "Minor" this, "Implied" that.

If you actually want to know, the long and short of it is there was a massive fandom migration that happened back in the somethingawful days because a few popular members of another large annoying fandom got into DR and started drawing/producing shit for it and thus got their followers into it as well, so it spread. It also "helped" that a few of the tumblr trans crowd latched onto Chihiro as a uwu precious trans girl and spread it around as a good series for that sort of shit.

It's kind of a "it's popular because it is" situation. Everyone started liking it because all their friends started liking it, and they twist the characters/game into being suitable for their progressive needs when it's not, and then get triggered when it inevitably does something Problematic.

I think the uwu precious trans baby crowd has aged out/gotten more critical since the first boom of DR popularity, though. I predict far more comun style autistic breakdowns about tulpaman than I do screeching about protecting the sweet trans girl korekiyo because tumblrites these days are more prone to tearing down anything problematic and getting "righteously" angry about it rather than sweeping over the problems and twisting a character into a dindu.
