I would agree in some cases, but Zelda as a series has established game play elements and goals, so the addition of mechanics that could theoretically "hinder" the goals that are typical to the series.

I think deducting points is fair if you feel the survival mechanics are a detriment to the core Zelda experience, similarly you could give a lower score to a Resident Evil game if it put in new elements that took away from its horror design, even if the desc ions were intentional.

Yeah, someone sent me a webm from /v/ that was just a montage of those freezes in fact. It's any sort of special or critical hit on a moblin including the killing blow that does it seemingly, since most of these cause the moblin to briefly ragdoll I suspect it's an error with the moblin's model that causes the renderer to lose its shit when calculating its physics (like maybe a part with two many polys or two bones in the same place or something).

I will also use RE as an example and say that if you're a fan of the series because, say, you love survival horror and now RE4 is more geared towards action horror, lowering the score because it's not what you want from an established IP is legit. Otherwise you're basically saying that reviewers have no right to say "no, I don't want this" based on personal taste. Also, determining the developer's intent is not always possible and whether they failed at their intentions or not is subjective.

I don't think you need to like or hate them to objectively say whether you think they work well or not. I feel that they are flawed and that it could easily be remedied by allowing players to fix their weapons in exchange for items such as ores or by paying with rupees. That small fix would make weapon durability a non-issue while still allowing people to experiment a lot with other weapons, since they'd have to swap out when their favourite weapons were close to breaking anyway.

apart from segmented runs being a thing there are 100% marathon (single-segment) runs for some games that took more than 24 hours. I think the longest single-segment 100% was close to three straight days on some gamecube jrpg, but I don't remember for sure. I'm sure 100% runs of botw will only be segmented though.

This game has made me super nostalgic as fuck for earlier Zelda games. On that note, some of my favorite Zelda games are Minish Cap and Twilight Princess, but I haven't played either of them since probably 2007. I've forgotten so much about them, I wonder if I'll like them as much as I remember.

Only issue is I'd like to play the new HD version Twilight Princess instead of the original, but while Wind Waker HD got a pretty impressive price cut (for Nintendo standards at least) TP HD is still full price.

Tanks have a much longer effective range than guardians, and are pinpoint accurate. They can hit a target more than 4km away, 8km if they prepare for it.

Not to mention that a machine gun on the tank could keep the guardian in hitstun by spraying its eye in between rounds from the main cannon.

A guardian would be wrecked by a modern tank, but it could probably beat a WW2 era tank with it's maneuverability and speed. WW2 era tanks would have a much harder time hitting the eye, and I don't think hitting the armor would do too much damage given how resistant guardians are to bomb arrows.

I set up a bonfire at the shrine location and rested for over 100 nights without a blood moon before giving up

It's not, the dungeons are worse, the towns are worse, the music is worse, the only thing it's better at is the companion character, Midna. Also the combat is completely unbalanced for the enemies, it's like 2 different teams made em and jammed it in at the last moment, because with the first move (the instakill plunger) you're already overpowered.

I feel like this is a bit like playing Dark Souls for the shooting or Pokemon for the graphics or something. Like the game technically has this, yes, and it complements the other shit that's there, but the reason it's not very good is because it isn't actually supposed to be the focus and not only would blowing budget on it be bad but making it better would shift the focus away from where it should be. It's like how you put a dash of salt in a dessert but you do not put two tablespoons of salt in a dessert or you'll ruin it.

I mean I get being into the series' lore, it's no Elder Scrolls or Dark Souls but it's fairly neato and even if there's frequent retcons there at least seems to be an internal logic per-game which is the basis of a good setting. It's just that even if that part were complete rubbish and everything else were fantastic in a zelda game that would be like a .1 point reduction for me (if we're going by reductions which I already think is dumb, by that logic one of my favourite games, Dragon's Dogma, would be like a 2/10 because it's so flawed).

BotW is definitely not below a 9/10. Whether it's 10/10 depends on whether your metric is relative quality or 10/10 being both without flaws and as fun as possible and 0/10 being a completely worthless experience. In the former case I would say that until something better comes along BotW is definitely a 10/10, in the latter I would say it's 9.5/10 because there's some really wonderful games I'd have called 9/10 a few weeks ago that are nowhere near as good.
