It did have issues, though. The pacing was pretty mediocre in a lot of areas, and the dissonance between the really well written moments of Aqua's route, and, well, everything else, kind of makes me wonder why it wasn't a shorter VN with Aqua's route as the only focus. Would've been much better that way, and it would've been less of a time sacrifice.

Why are you even comparing these works? They are praised for totally different reasons, besides Himawari isn't even nearly as popular as Dies irae & Subahibi in Japan. Himawari is considered a kamige because of its realistic takes on characterization and powerful human drama, in other words it's not for everyone.

SubaHibi explores crazy and controversial ideas and is overall a lot of fun. Dies irae has an incredible set of characters with insanely hype battles. Honestly they should be way more popular with the general audience compared to Himawari and I'd be surprised if that didn't end up being the case.

I think one of my problems with Himawari was the narration going "_____ felt this because ______", which happened a lot with Youichi during the Aqua route.

I liked Aqua as a character but I didn't feel completely invested in her after doing her route. 2048 was great and I felt bad for Aqua every time something happened.

The humor portions are also pretty bland.
