Like, there are individual story beats and lines that work better with the young Nier (because they were written for him in the first place) but the general motif of desperately trying to save Yonah no matter what the hardship or cost makes so much more sense when it's a parent trying to save his child than an older sibling trying to save the younger.

Is the Young Nier's father ever mentioned? Because I've got this headcanon that Papa Nier and Young Nier were actually part of the same family, and in one of the continuities the other one had died offscreen before the game starts.

I mean, it makes sense, since route B is basically new game + but from 9S POV, so of course you finish it and most people think, "oh, well that's it, only thing left is grinding money and material to upgrade weapons", so the advertisement they do right after the credits prompts you to play again

You don't necessarily have to play it to understand Automata, but I do feel like a lot of things will go over your head. It gives the game some extra charm when you're able to recognize events and details that happened in the first Nier.

So I was browsing the enemy data for Nier Automata and apparently it confirms ending C (A2 winning) as being canon, do they change according to which ending you got last or is it a confirmation?
basically the 9s description and the A2 one both confirm 9S died at the hands of A2, but maybe it changes depending on which ending you got?

The biggest thing you'll miss is not in Automata, but in Nier itself. Because Automata just casually spoils all the major twists of the original in a much less dramatic form. Playing the original game isn't required for Automata, but you'll enjoy the original game much less if you play Automata first, not just because of technological reasons but story reasons too.

Read the novella. It explains her life up to when she got the flower, which isn't explained in game.

tl;dr of it is that She was born in some ultra shit slums, her mother was a poor woman who didn't give a fuck about her, her father was likely some rando who fucked her mother and went on with his life. Her mother sold her to a brothel as soon as she was old enough to be wanted by one, then Zero spent a reasonable portion of her teen life working in said brothel.

After a failed escape and a betrayal by one of her friends, she murders everyone at the brothel and becomes a travelling thief. Eventually she comes across one of her old clients from the brothel and teams up with him, but she comes down with a disease that makes her weaker and less able to pull her weight, so the guy betrays her and attempts to kill her in her sleep, but she gets him instead. After that she becomes a travelling murder hobo and questions why she's even still living. Eventually the authorities catch her, torture her and then sentence her to death for her crimes, then as she dies the flower appears before her, making her an immortal bringer-of-the-end-times.

I don't know where it was stated but I remember being told the flower simply picked her because of her immense distaste for the world and the life she'd had in it.

Enjoy, as someone who thought N:A was amazing and would be a total improvement, I actually felt like it lacked some of Nier's charm: Nier 1 had a lot more dialogue, which makes sense with human characters instead of androids, but it made the party feel a lot more livelier than 2B and especially A2 and her huge lack of sidequests.

That, and Nier 1's overworld while smaller and less well designed than Automata's feels a bit more substantial because its more populated, has larger dungeons, etc.

I loved exploring Automata's desolate world and side-quests, but I wish that the camps or the bunker felt a little more lively to make up for the lack of actual towns.

I thought Automata's final scene was just as good as Nier 1's conclusion which is high praise. Getting to see 2B/9S' relationship twisted around like that messed with the main game a lot, to the point that I wonder that said moment would lose power if we were better acquainted with those two if they were more developed.

It's hard to defend A2 getting a grand total of three or four sidequests and barely any dialogue though to the point where people are expecting story DLC.

She has pretty much no real role in the story other than to act as a mouthpiece for 2B after she's gone and just be there because she and N2 were both part of the stage play, but unlike 2B that took until I started doing side quests to really get me interested in her, I wanted to fuck A2 minutes after she was playable despite the less attractive frame.
