It's not just the free cursor, it's also the little things like how the UI never presents extraneous information to the player, never feels intrusive, and everything has it's place in the menu. It's designed to collapse in on itself like a hand of cards and look clean and organized at the initial menu, and present more and more info the deeper you go.

It's really a very logical and efficient UI system. It may not be super pretty, and it may lack options like sorting which I agree should be in there, but it's still very effective.
