I played FFXI on the PS2 when it first released and play up to 2007/2008. It was nice at first but quickly became shit once you got into content with 10+ more people.
Sky nm's was LAGORAMA and Besiged would often freeze/overheat your PS2.

It wasn't that bad but it sucked in large group content. You could filter out spell/action effects and whatnot but it still lagged quite a bit. Comparing it to ps3/FF14, ps3 is in MUCH better shape graphically but the problem with both consoles was not much about graphics but memory. Memory has always been a huge issue with 11 and i would not doubt the situation is the same for ps3 XIV.
While mmo's on a console is a neat idea, MMO's grow and evolve over time. PC specs typically keep up rather easily with the change of structure and demands of an mmo while consoles do not.
