The vanilla game is boring as fuck. You spend way too long running to a boss. You beat the boss by spamming tempest, then you spend forever running back through the same empty areas and further to get to the next boss. But since you didn't grind, you can't even use half the swords you unlocked.

Enemies can attack you from off screen, but there isn't even a penalty for dying. Even if you are going to die against peons, you are better off just letting yourself die and saving your healing items for the boss fight.
