I don't see how a hat and special bible titles are that snowflakey. That's more like an easter egg. Kind of like how skeletons can play their rib cages. The problem here is that if you give an audio cue or active powers to a custom religion, every Chaplain is going to want one. Who wants to have the boring old default Space Jesus be their god when they could make up some cheeky religion that comes with powers and hats? Even Christian Chaplains meme it the fuck up with proselytizing and crusading.

I think the problem here runs deeper. There's a divide between why the Chaplain exists flavor wise and how people want to play it.

The Chaplain is a "fluff" job, one whose duties are based entirely on interaction with other characters. His relevance to the station is the same as a real life priest would have to a small town. The prototypical Chaplain fills in as a counselor, a confidant, a role model, and a community organizer for everybody on the station, on top of providing spiritual guidance. However, lots of people who play Chaplain, with or without gimmicks, find opportunities to do these things too sparse. To make this RP-focused job more proactive, Chaplains turn to making the job more flavorful. Making your character zanier, set a self-imposed goal, etc. All jobs do this, to some extent. A good Chaplain "mission" can still be the stuff of great rounds, but most of the time the Chaplains end up choosing between being an sideshow act, an assistant, or gathering dust/fucking off.

The librarian has the exact same problem. With a void of actual objectives to fulfill, Librarians turn to gimmicks after the novelty of printing porn and holding D&D sessions in the library has worn off. To contrast, the Clown and Mime don't have this problem because their objective on the station aligns perfectly with how people want to play them: goof off.

With regard to the chaplain abilities issue. Why not remove all "snowflakey" roundstart religion benefits (mainly the ZAS one) but allow all of them to be admin spawn only. It seems like the perfect opportunity to let prayermins have more toys to give (hopefully with restraint) to chaplains with all these prayermin apps coming in. Any new slippery slope tier chaplain benefit can become admin only and the chaplain would actually have to put effort in to get his goodies. It would also encourage roleplay between the chap and their deity as they would (hopefully) only be able to get their nice toys if they choose the right deity, server them appropriately and roleplay. Make the Blood scream like the advanced clown shoes.

I think it's dumb that some religions come with better shit than others, I also think it would be dumb for every religion to have some cool benefit because it would encourage shitters to pick chaplain for free items and there's something like 50 religions, so it's probably also absurd to think they would all get love. I see no wrong in having all the religions only giving you, at a maximum, a themed hat for free. I think toys and abilities should be granted for those that are dedicated in round. It's not like getting attention and renovating your bar requires those benefits. In fact, if you get them, they would be rather special and would do better for attention than if they were common to all chaplains that picked the religion.

Almost everybody left the station.

I have settled on taking two applicants out of the submissions which is extremely painful to do since I think all of them are worthy. I've found in my 2 years of being an admin here that the more involved you get, the more you're making decisions you'd rather not have to make at all.

I'm well aware of the first part. The latest in the ongoing series of chuckles is we spent weeks and dozens of man hours scouring the code almost at random trying to figure out WHY THE FUCKING SERVER KEEPS CRASHING and tearing our hair out. We fix it, the server isn't crashing anymore, and no one says a word about it.

You don't get thanks from people. You get thanks from the people you work with sometimes. If you need satisfaction or can't take the bants from the thread then you're in the wrong volunteer job because it won't give it, and if it does they'll thank you for things you didn't do or were easy.

I am satisfied with giving back time to the server for all the free entertainment and friendship it has given me. I am not fazed when someone calls me shit one day then wants my help the next.
