Hoshi was probably either a super driven guy who wanted to live at all costs (and needed the prize money for x reason; maybe in a twist of irony he was indebted to the mafia), or suicidal and TDR built on that and gave him a dramatic backstory.
I think the producers had it 'rigged' against him- I'm not trying to piss and moan over one of my liked characters, but you don't give someone who has already offered to die because he doesn't care about living a blank motive video saying "sorry, nobody cares about you, you have no reason to live".
He was death fodder, probably because TDR knew he would be unpopular (and then, hey, he was 15th place in the popularity poll).

Game!Hoshi would probably be disappointed with meeting his real life counterpart, because he was a punk who never did anything, besides maybe liking cats and playing tennis.
(Real!Hoshi probably never even had a girlfriend; he might have requested it not to seem so much like a loser.)

I like to imagine real!Miu was a more timid, bookish girl. (Like her "real" personality in the games) TDR needed a fanservice character, though, so they built on her intelligence and ballooned her into an overconfident braggart.

Was a big fan of Danganronpa, mostly how the robots, simulations, and execution machines worked.

I find it almost ironic that Kiibo is possibly the only character that was forced into the game for "practical use" and didn't sign up for it, yet he's the only character who's real personality we actually saw and know about. The others are on audition tapes that have a 50/50 shot at being a truth, but Kiibo's actually happened.

Then again, having a character that didn't sign up for it at all be the only real personality shown could hide that the crazed fans of Danganronpa personalities are real too.

Yeah, if anything they forget that the start of chapter 5 was literally Ouma playing chess with the game itself and Maki was his player. He knew she was close to Kaito and could bait her into attacking, which she did. Because of that, he set his plan into motion with Kaito because he knew he had Kaito wrapped around his finger too. Kiibo and Gonta could probably be coerced into coming with you for free, as they don't really understand the severity of the situation. (and would probably either run away or freeze up and turn into a blushing mess when they figure out what's happening)
Korekiyo asks for a modest sum, intrigued to study humans satisfying their base desires.
Hoshi is probably pretty cheap, because he has no self-worth. He insults you for choosing him, because of his looks and his past as a killer, though.

The people that believed Kaede was the protagonist were dead set on Maki being the rival or Amami (but this lessened as it became pretty obvious he was first victim from all the fuckups in the trailers covering that up).

I never saw anyone really insisting he'd be the rival, mostly just a source of opposition/trolling/lies without any real connection to Kaede/the switched out protag. 80% of the people I talked to were convinced he was a rehash of Gundam in pretty much every way, in both personality and role in the story. He'd be an obvious rival if Saihara were marketed as the protag but he really doesn't mesh well with Kaede's design/character, so it makes him just look like a filler chuuni character if you believed her to be the main protag.

Tbh, I always thought V3 was like that, but they subverted it a little.
Ouma felt more like the assistant character while Maki felt like the rival character. Except they made the assistant character more antagonistic than the rival character.
This is a little more obvious when Ouma is revealed to be a lot closer to Kirigiri, and Maki a lot closer to Togami in chapter 5.
It might have been unintentional but this is how I saw it.
