It's really notable how much less annoying they made small monsters in gen 3

Rhenoplos were way slower than bullfango, bnahabras were less aggressive and less likely to paralyze than vespoids, uroktors had a big glowing tell when they popped up, and the jaggi family would hide in a corner if a large monster besides their boss was present and only harass you if you came close

They threw it all out the window when they brought back all the gen 1/2 shits, and even with that they had to nerf vespoids and bullfango and reduce their overall numbers

Well, effectively they do die, but what you see is them lay on the ground with stars over their heads for a bit, then they get up and saunter off. Kind of unintentionally more disturbing, really, since you can take their liver or even skin from them and have them just walk it off.
But yeah, I believe they do die for real in Japanese versions, but in western releases they do that. Can't have the cute little deer dieing in a game about slaughtering creatures en masse to wear their skin, after all.

It was a localization change that has just stuck for some weird ass reason.

Unedited, kelbis drop different things depending on what you do to them

if you KO them with blunt attacks, you are more likely to carve horns (actually I think this is the only way you can get horns in some of the games), they would get back up after being carved because you only knocked them out

If you outright killed them with a bladed weapon or just doing absurd damage you are more likely to get pelts, meat or liver. It didn't get back up and stayed dead like any other small monster.

In the US versions however, the death state for Kelbis is removed, and they will knock out no matter how you attack or hit them. I want more blood. And blood on the ground like MHO has. And if I cut something's tail off I want it to make a trail of dripping blood for awhile. Bladed weapons need to leave visible wounds. Hammer killing blows to the head should cave in the skull with some brain exposed or hit the bottom jaw so hard with the golfswing it dislocates it and tears some of the skin in the cheek area from the force of the dislocation. With teeth/fangs broken out as well of course.

Kelbis can still be killed by other monsters' attacks.
If you KO them with a bladed weapon or with huge damage, they'll have orange stars over their heads instead of yellow ones, and have a higher chance for pelts/meat/liver.

I tried brave lance however and it has a much easier to time version of just guard with X+A that comes out quick, is awesome for cancelling combos and does KO/exhaust

I've got the timing down almost perfectly, it's just most of the monsters either move away or hit me before I can finish the counter move and block again.

I feel like the block->counter->block time is too long, you should be able to block again immediately after performing the counter.

My muscle memory always kicks in and I try and AED off of a guard point or I'll try to AED off a shield bash and just end up wasting all my phials on a charge I didn't need. Makes it hard to play.

Merely punching and kicking certain monsters without any augmented gloves/boots wouldn't make as much sense.
