I was thinking about uploading unlisted 1-5 (no longer than 5) minute playthroughs of each demo day demo. Right now there are 43 entries and I don't wanna spend more than like 3 hours on this. Only problem is, I don't recognize all the games and so I don't know if some of them are whodevs or not. Does this sound good?
>>
>>170648165
you can just ask which games are from whodevs if you have doubts, people will answer

>>170644772

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I only remember the site was in japanese and it had some really good anime models. A lot of them were for MMD but I don't think it was a site exclusively for them.

Do you think a modern day Sim-Hospital clone would sell well? Capture a meme audience?
>>
>>170648165
Some may not post regularly in these threads and therefore be whodevs to most of us, but AGDG stretches beyond the threads, to the discord and even the other chan. From experience I can tell you 5 minutes is basically nothing, it would be more worthwhile to give half the games 10 minutes, but even that is not much for some of the entries. I think it's a good idea to give back to the community though, so yeah, do find a format that works for you and help your fellow devs.
>>
>>170648919
>but AGDG stretches beyond the threads, to the discord and even the other chan
This is a jam hosted by and for the AGDG community at 4chan.
If you are not a part of the community then this jam is not for you.
>>
>>170648764
Sure, but you better hope there will be a market for it in 5+ years.
>>
>>170648764
I wouldn't expect it to sell amazingly but there is a definitely an audience for those kind of games.

This cockpit I've been making for a few days is turning out pretty neat. Much better than the previous attempt. Hope it transfers well into the engine.

It's not accurate from the IRL counterpart but it's close enough. Though I think this much detail is a little bit overkill so I might scale it down a bit to save time and resources on future jets.

Each and every one of you can and will achieve your dreams! I believe in you, and even if you don't believe in yourself there will always be at least one person rooting for you. On the days where the devving is slow, the sleepless nights where you just can't seem to smash that final bug and every time you do a million more take its place, the desperate hacking away so you can make it in time for demo day and miss it anyway - I'll always be rooting for you.

early tech always looks like shit. Very early pixel art looked like hot garbage, it wasn't until mid-late NES that they picked their game up.
3D's the same. Noone had any idea what they were doing, so they tried to be as realistic as possible and it looked like shit. Games like Mario and OoT look much better than that because Nintendo realised the tech wasn't good enough for realism so focusing on style was more important.
Focusing on realism when the tech can't handle it is the fastest way to make sure your game is outdated in less than a year

Because you're cherry picking the best 2D graphics and the worst 3D graphics. There are tons of old 2D games that look like complete ass, and also lots of old 3D games that look great. Generally the worst looking 3D games were attempting to go for a "realistic" look, but because models had to be so low poly, it just made it look terrible. The better 3D games had stylized art.

Also I think that pic you posted looks fairly good for an early attempt at realistic art.

I'm going to give you some great non-meme advice anon are you ready.

Go out and run for 30 minutes. I'm guessing this isn't something you do on the regular so 30 minutes is a perfectly good time for a beginner. Even if you get tired and hit a wall, I want you to at the very least keep running until you get your second wind.

The moment that happens and you feel your screaming muscles quiet as you get a surge of adrenaline and realize that yes, you can keep going, it's going to change your perspective. You're going to realize how far a little bit of willpower can take you.

Once you've experienced that, go out tomorrow and do it again and keep at it for longer. Push into those third and fourth winds and keep improving your distance and duration. The more you practice those little victories of the will, the better your overall power over your life will increase.

When you come back in you're going to feel confident, energized, realize you're standing up straighter and your muscles have relaxed, your voice has deepened, and your mind is clearer and more able to focus. You'll look at the things that were blocking you before and scoff.

This is not some meathead Chad talking to you on his way back to /fit/. I was just like you for many years. Exercise turned everything around for me. It doesn't take much, it just takes small improvements every day. The struggle against complacency is a lifelong war of attrition.

Hello /agdg/, new shitdev here. What makes a Zelda game?

I've never really played any Zelda game that much but I've been working on a little project that'll hopefully result in something somewhat like the first Zelda game for the NES. The point is obviously not to make something groundbreaking but to actually finish a game for once and a neatly packed little adventure game at least seems something that's doable for me. So far I have stuff like different types of enemies, weapons, and utility items but where should I proceed from there?

What are the integral parts of a Zelda game? The dungeons? Exploration? What kind of puzzles there are if any? Has the story ever been important in the Zelda franchise? Whatever I work on seems to dry up whenever I manage to get the basic stuff implemented and the next step is to actually build the game.
>>
>>170648919
In that case, I may just go ahead and do all of them, or at least until I get bored. Any requests? I'm probably gonna do them in batches.
>>
>>170665094
There's a guy on youtube who has a whole set of videos that analyze the dungeon design and the like from the Zelda series. Its called like "Boss Keys" or something. Maybe that will help.

Go play them and work it out for yourself. You'll not only come away with your answer but if you're a good gamedev you'll also come away with your perspective on how to improve it and add your own spin on it.

Also Zelda is an old series that has changed a whole lot. Even comparing the first one to LTTP is a huge jump, let alone OOT. You'll very rarely find any one answer about concrete elements because zelda means different things to different people.
>>
>>170665094
Zelda has become like Sonic and everyone has a different opinion on what the series should be like. BotW sure didn't help.
>>
>>170665094

Gonna give you a little hint; the first zelda on the NES was pretty trash. With almost no direction and random placement of 'secrets' (ie; bomb random tiles after framing enemies until something happens) it's not a good game to emulate.

Consider instead Zelda 2, or any of the later games.

zelda1 introduced the concepts of: adventure, action, collecting an inventory of mostly the same/useless shit, shitty basicbitch puzzles, bog bosses you shoot in the eye/s.
...and every zelda game has done all those zelda things to varying degrees.

the only truly off game in the series is zelda2 because of its rpg stats.

R.A.D Ross
Game: https://apollo.itch.io/rad-ross-demoday-13
Video feedback: https://youtu.be/3RmDVodpB30
- The elements of Metroid and Megaman well mixed.
- The difficulty will need some balance, but to think about it, it has an old NES feeling to it.
- Some sound effects are kind of irritating.
- Some animations are weird. Like when he switches from jump to fall, or sometimes it's hard to leave the ladder.
- Certain keys are not well mapped. I could only leave the room with the actual up button, while it should be the current key used for up, so if it's WASD then up should be W. Same for ladders. I could only use them properly with the other layout, and not with WASD which I've started with. Same goes for shop etc.
- I've made some friends. ;_;

Black Valentine
Game: https://fruitdev.itch.io/black-valentine
Video feedback: https://youtu.be/YgYROMQ-_KU
- There were cases when I started the game, but it was silent.
- You have managed to compose the best sounding 4 second loop I've ever heard.
- I adore games like these. Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV and so on. It really is on par with those.
- Nice difficulty. I love torture. Yet I had to give it a rest after a while. (I hope I will be able to get to that date one time. ;_;)
- I know it's minimalist, but it would be nice to have the option to remap the keys. Spamming space in the dead silence of the night whilst others are sleeping are not good.
- I love the visual representation, the meta stuff. I really envy people who can make the simplest things look so good and appealing.
- Really, there's not much feedback or advice to say. It feels like a perfect, polished, finished game. I'm happy for you, and I'm very happy that I had the chance to play it! Thank you very much for creating this!

I moved to uk when I was 13, so I hadn't "absorbed" very much of that Latvian culture. That being said, the most obvious difference was that the people here were nicer. Might just be the lack of Rusians though, what with Latvia being 50%(probably more now) or so Russian at the time.

Another thing is that UK is in a lot of ways more modern. Latvia is poor as shit, so the tech there is almost always outdated.

In a way, despite all that it was comfy back there, but that was because I lived near a forest and a lake. Here I'm living in the city, so it's not the same. Then again I can always get back to this comfynes if I were to get enough cash and move somewhere like the place I used to live.
Won't be happening any time soon though.

Thanks for reading my blog post btw.

Not him, but since you're here I'll give you my only minor nitpick about your game.
The HP and SP bars blend together, and I think their sizes are backwards, because the larger SP bars seem more important. It also seems like the SP bars "build out" the HP bars, so to speak. So starting out, I saw full SP in the corner of my vision and thought "hp's fine".
I also think if you block a hit that completely drains your SP fully, you should get no-damage knock-backed. If that interrupts the flow too much, maybe just fancy particle effects and sfx like a glass shattering instead.

But I really liked it.

I model them all at the same scale in Blender, but sometimes I have to mess with the scale a bit afterwards to make details show up in GM at that small a size, so the inventory table also stores a "scale" variable for each weapon

https://my.mixtape.moe/asiziu.webm

I don't know why the muzzle flash only shows up occasionally when the sound plays consistently with the shooting, expecially when the two lines of code that control it are next to each other.

There's also raycasting coming from the gun but no effect or projectiles.

>>

what's the code that's spawning the flashes?
>>
>>170673551
Interesting. I have one last question.
Where did you make the animations for your gun?
Sorry for bothering.
>>
>>170673864
The way I have the weapon set up is a series of objects that will change positions and model depending on what weapon it is.

But for right now there is one muzzle flash proxy that is on the tend of the gun. It's active is set to false by default or whenever you let go of mouse 1, but there is a couroutine within the script that makes it blink based on how fast the gun is shooting.

function Muzzle_Flash()
{
muzzle_flash.SetActive (true);
yield WaitForSeconds (reloadTime);
muzzle_flash.SetActive (false);
yield WaitForSeconds (reloadTime);
}

which is inside of the firing function.

I'll remove extraneous shit.

function Fire()
{

if(reloadTime < reload) {
return;
}

isShooting = true;

Muzzle_Flash();
GetComponent.<AudioSource>().Play();

reloadTime = 0;
}
>>
>>170674150
There aren't any proper animations really, just lerped rotations for swinging and recoil and such
>>
>>170674204
Ah. Try 0.5f*reloadTime, assuming that reload time is the time between shots. Glad to see that you are just setting active though, that's what I first thought.

>>
>>170674310
reloadTime is a float variable that counts upwards until it hits reload. This is what determines the ROF.

For the M16, reload is 0.1, so the reloadTime counts up to .1 then goes back to 0
>>
>>170674527
Ah. Set your Muzzle Flash to a coroutine (setting type to IEnumerator, then instead of calling the function, use Startcoroutine. See if that works. I didn't read the fire function until now. yield waitforseconds doesn't like to run as a function when there's other lines. I'm really surprised that the audio would work with that. But try that.
>>
>>170674804

art is about copying good artists and life, doing it a shit ton that your brain stores all these shorthands for stuff that you can just plop on a page at will

t. starting drawing 3 years ago and can sum up what i learned to that. it really is just putting pencil to paper and trying different things until your drawings look good

not denying talent though, some people really do have it easier naturally and will put in far less work that you. don't listen to artists that tell you talent isn't real or everything they did is hard work, some people are born with it.

Just sounds like poor programming overall, many devs have already demonstrated that Unity games don't need to run like crap.

I want to like the demos, this is why I've downloaded them, but I can't. After 1min of gameplay it just feels that they just didn't care about making at least a functional demo.
Just because it's a demo doesn't mean that you shouldn't at least try to fix all the obvious bugs, I'm looking at you frostdev, or make sure that at least your gameplay goes first before all the unnecessary effects killing the framerate.

Unity excluded, Monolith is a perfect example of a demo that at least looks like a plays like a demo, and I'm not even a fan of shooters.

I like it, but it's obviously very rough. Battles need a lot of polish, it's hard to tell who or what is attacking and enemies just suddenly die (no death sound or anything)

Her controls are kind of weird but I got used to it, she's independent of the camera in the cabin so that when moving forward for example she will move downwards. She doesn't turn around when moving backwards either. Basically it's tank controls, I used a keyboard btw.

Also found it kind of jarring how walls would be in front of the camera when turning, there's no backface culling or whatever.

Really cute character though, and the overall art is nice. Looking forward to this being fleshed out.

Monolith dev here: Monolith's been in development for years (2012, technically, though 2015-2016 more realistically), and the first demo, since it was about 6 months ago, still had at least a year of dev time into it.

I'm extremely proud of what we've done, but I'd be hesitant to hold other demos to that level of polish, given how long its taken us.

A design document is simply a recording of ideas and ideas are fundamental, you will forget the details of whatever you want to make so I consider a DD essential.
>>
>>170686248
>Do you guys actually do design documents or do you just dive in?

do you mean pre-planning or whatever?

if so, yes always.
You can't get ideas unless you mull them over for a while. Helps if you talk out loud and imagine how it will work.

Then you make a simple bare bones thing of it and then see what changes you will have to make and start planning again.

that's how you do basically anything.

shit that is sad.

anyway, question for you guys.

to those of you who are active PC gamers, do you own a gamepad? which one?

I know I'll need to make a keyboard control scheme but the gamepad one inevitably will be way, way better since it has 6 axes (two directional for each stick and two in the triggers - my game will use all of these and could event use one more currently).

in case anyone else is wondering I bought the $15 microshaft adapter to use my 360 controllers (which I'm quite fond of) with the PC.

thanks.
>>
>>170686248
there's no right answer. you can destroy your will to dev by planning too much. it's basically the same as creating a super large intimidating to-do list.

I find planning only the next thing to do and then doing it right away keeps me motivated. it definitely keeps things more fun.

I use a ps4 controller hooked up with a USB cord and input mapper to mock Xbox360 input.

basically make sure your game can support 360 input cause everyone knows to use that.

A true affection system would take into account who the player is and how they were playing the game. The game would build the player character based on the choices the player has made. Then it would rate affection, and the ability to actually say the right things to a person based on what type of person the game has ascertained the player is.

Rather than having it hinge on a choice, you would gain affection with the people who would actually like a person like you based on the seemingly frivolous choices you made beforehand.
>>
>>170661957
I don't have one since some of my characters are already in a relationship or have predetermined ones based on the story.
>>

>>
>>170683314
Doesn't matter if it's your first demo or your fifth. What matters is how far into development you are.

As it turns out, agdg is a great place for early feedback on barely functional demos. If we were further in development we'd probably be shilling on tumblr instead.
>>
>>170687880

Furthermore, if you try to appeal to everyone, the system would ultimately have you appeal to no one because of the pure numbers. The affection would have to compare the numbers in different character traits rather than just checking a single number. This is the only way the system could be a reflection of real life.

more reviews
these were all with the keyboads, whereas the last (and hopefully the rest) were mainly with the controller, because the controller feels nice but I done borked my cable

R.A.D. Ross: I still like where this is going. The controls are pretty solid, the graphics are good but the details could stand to be enlarged or thickened a bit. I had a bug coming up a ladder at one point and I had to press eeverything to detach myself. Not long after that the game crashed with this message: "FATAL ERROR in action number 1 of Step Event0 for object obj_zombie: Unable to find any instance for object index '0' name 'obj_player' at gml_Object_obj_zombie_Step_0"

Untitled Cabal Shooter: Everything seems smooth enough but the keyboard controls really don't feel that natural at all. Some better placeholder graphics would actually help the gameplay because it would be easier to keep track of what's going on, even just differently drawn angry faces on the rectangles would be much better.

Consecrated Rampage: It feels like the attack take a little too long, but I'm sure that's part of the strategy. I couldn't nail down how to do the special version of the normal attack (not the Special attack), I narrowed it down to "Z plus a direction at some point". I couldn't tell why I was failing the "trials".

House Cleaner: I really like the feel of this, from the controls to the graphics to combat. I'd maybe give the player a little less inertia, but otherwise this is already really slick and functional. I couldn't get very far in the couple minutes I played it but I felt like it was mostly my fault (although a better health display is in order).

more tomorrow!

Thinking about taking up gamedev again.

Would a game done in a faux-Gameboy Color kind of aesthetic be interesting to people, or would it just come off as more 8-Bit indie hipster pandering BS?

For the record I'm really bad at pixel art so I'd probably actually try to pull off a nostalgic gameboy look but with a sort of modern vector-style art. It may or may not be black and white as opposed to GBC-esque.

There's an up, neutral, and down version of the basic and strong attack, like tilt-attacks in Smash Bros. My plan there is to eventually make it so the PC looks up when you hold up, and looks down/crouches a bit when you hold down. Most people never see these attacks at all, its really frustrating.
The trials are weirdly complicated and not explained. I've already changed what it says, but I'm going to change how they work too.
Thanks a lot for the feedback!

>sunken cost fallacy
But maybe she has a point. Is your gamedev balanced out with health activities, like eating well (usually means cooking your own stuff), exercise, and suitable exposure to the outdoors? Are you attempting to quit a fulltime job because of the lure of fulltime development? Do you spend a couple of waking hours a day away from the screen, thus keeping you from burning out? Gamedev is important, anon, but so is your health, mental and physical. If you're doing everything right and she just doesn't like you having hobbies, then she's the one that's wrong.

You have to believe in whatever you're working on.

Without that you have nothing, and it can't be forced.

I'd suggest watching some old movies and playing old games until something really hits you.

And when that first idea hits you, write it down. And if you feel a tangent coming on, don't avoid it, write that down too. Before you know it you'll start having ideas you actually need to throwaway because you have too many going on.

I dunno how many people frequent the threads often. But I'm the guy making an RPG that controls like Mario RPG out of battle and Breath of Fire in.

And I had an idea that some attacks/spells have a 'Tilt' system. Power, accuracy and low cost. There are 3 and you can specialize in 2. Not that the center is the worst place to be or anything. As certain characters level, their triangle expands to tilt to farther degrees than others. There's gonna be a lot of scenarios that rewards those who know how to game this, but the tilt system itself isn't necessary to play the game. And it would be more of a 'hard mode' sorta thing.

Have there been other RPGs that have used something like this for attacks? A friend mentioned Yggdra Union and I couldn't find the example he may have been referring to.

Plus multiple unrelated classes can utilise it indiscriminately.
Plus sometimes it's easier/makes more sense to get a reference from A to B than from B to A
Basically, they're useful.

This is my movement script, but it doesn't work, can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong? The character is receiving input, I have a jump script and a mouse movement script in the same blueprint and they work. I need help.

Looks like the engine can handle it though. Might get heavier once more stuff is added of course.

ue literally has movement setup as soon as you make a new project with template

Yes, several times. MoveForward/Backward contains the W and D keys, W = 1.00 and S = 1.00. Same with StrafeLeftRight, with the A and D keys.

What is "your version" of the engine? How the fuck did you manage to fuck up downloading something?

Also using blueprints and saying you don't want to use templates is a pretty funny oxymoron.
>>
>>170713564
It is the easiest shit. I have literally setup movement in other projects, I am using the same script. I don't know what the fuck the issue is.

I did use templates in an earlier version to help learn, but I uninstalled Unreal for a while, and when I reinstalled it, there were no templates.
>>

wew lad no reason to get mad if youre retarded
>>
>>170713652
Yeah, I know, blueprints are pretty much templates, I know how to code in C++, I am just too lazy to do it. Using the nodes is WAAAAY easier.

>>170713652
>>170713710
For a short time there, there was one version of the engine that didn't include templates, but people got pissed, and they added them back. I don't like to update because Epic Games changes stuff around A LOT. Something will work with one version that won't work with the other.

You don't even have anything in your game yet, just update and learn to use the engine before complaining about having to use templates to learn.

In terms of the products as a whole, I'd say the Gimp/PS relationship is pretty similar.

But for gamedev stuff (i.e. ignoring rendering, simulation) they are more equal.

I know my way around the engine, nothing those templates have will teach me anything that I don't know. Like I said, I have other projects where this exact script works, I don't know what the fucking problem is. I actually have quite a bit in my game, I have just been working around the lack of movement so I can actually get things done. If I stopped to work on the lack of movement as soon as I knew it wasn't working, everything would've come to a halt. I need to get it working now though. Everything I can get setup that doesn't require movement is in the game, I can't develop any further without movement.

A question for anyone in this thread...

Why haven't you converted to 2D?

2D games are better than 3D games.

For all those people who are making 2D games: What engine are you using and why isn't it Clickteam Fusion 2.5? CF2.5 is better than all 2D games engines.

As interesting as using the first person view you get without a camera would be, it's not what I plan to do.

I just want to be able to "move around" what the camera tells the player, but not the camera itself.
But I'm having doubts about whether I really need that or not, seems like a lot of work for something minor.
