Basically if you were remotely involved in the kill aside from the last 10% of health you can just take it UNLESS you are supp for your adc and you need to get them fed.

Did you tank the damage? take it.
Did you buff your teammate or CC the dying opponent? Take it.
Is there a chance that the opponent is going to escape OR your teammate is going to die unless you sail in and kill them? take it even if you are support to your adc.

I only consider it a dick move to take a kill when your teammate has been soloing the other guy and has a clear advantage and you contribute nothing but the last hit which your teammate would have gotten anyway.

But there's NO SUCH THING as "kill stealing" because rito is always right about who gets the kill, you didn't steal it it's yours, and people who complain about KS are whiny bitches who should have their shit shoved in.

So, I've been climbing through plat without too much trouble, but I've run into a bit of a roadblock. My friend said, and I agree that my decision-making on a micro scale is pretty bad. the explanation was that my champion pool mostly consists of mid-long range mages and so my laning is really binary. Do I hit the skillshot? ok, kill them. Miss? back off and try again. I've never had a ton of risk-reward in the way that a lot of melee champions do. Anyways what are some good ways to improve lane micro and decision making.

those ADCs scale well into mid gameso you want to focus on farming to a point where you are relevant (ez has huge spike with tforce + mura which you can achieve 25~) also as ez once you have tear spam Q every 4 seconds you shouldn't have mana problems if you have good back timings and you will get mura by 20 mins

you need to value your auto attack more. that's basically all it comes down to, because the decision is almost always "is it safe to trade auto attacks? yes/no". ward and look at minimap before committing to auto attack battles if you are suspicious of roams.

I realized what I did wrong last game. Some of it was just genuine mechanical failure, Hecarim outplayed me in a 2v1 at top.

But Kalista was really the only enemy champ who was legitimately fed, and I could solo kill her despite her items. I should have bought a sight stone or used blue totem and controls to deep ward their jungle, and then split push all day while I asked Ekko to turtle. We lost straight up fights but as long as I was with my wave I could win a solo and even some potential 2v1s. So I should have constantly applied pressure and used the vision to flee ganks while I was at their inhibitor, and asked Shaco to do the same in the side lane because he was AD and his ult and Q let him obliterate towers and escape unscathed.

On the plus side, I successfully solo killed Nasus in lane a few times, had the highest CS in the game, and successfully forced Nasus to waste his teleport getting back to lane but denied him the waves to his tower anyway. (he did E max so he couldn't farm under turret, but also didn't get anything out of maxing E because I pushed the lane harder than he did and took little to no damage via passive) I'm fairly confident most of the CS I missed was because of Morde's bugged W.

I also should have got a void staff instead of gunblade, the pen was way more important than the sustain especially against Galio.
