tl;dr at bottom :)

Hi /mcg/

So I returned about a month ago to Minecraft (I hadn't played since 1.2.5) and have been having lots of fun building shit and blowing it up, exploring, and killing shit. Unfortunately, I think Vanilla has just about hit its limit for me - I made a huge-ass gate that plays music with the new redstone things, explored the new End and Nether, and played around a little bit with the new Command Blocks. I never did any modding back when I used to play, but it seems like there's a lot of content I could have fun with. I come to y'all seeking guidance.

I'm looking for mods that:

>Breathe new life into vanilla content
I've noticed some things that seem lacking, like a lack of decorative blocks in different materials (marble fences/walls, more wool colors, different wood crafting tables and chests) or maybe more variety in the nether.

>Rekindle a sense of discovery
The immediate wonder upon first seeing the cubic hills around me has dulled, and exploring new terrain or making new discoveries would bring some of the simple joy of playing back to me.

>Add more late-game content
Punch tree. Mine stuff. Get diamond. Enchant diamond. Clear underwater temple. Clear forest mansion. Build awesome fortress. Kill Ender Dragon. Kill Wither. Durdle around with more redstone - damn, wireless with glass and arrows doesn't work like it did in 1.2.5. New World. Repeat. I want more! More armor, more bosses, more challenge, more variety!

>Advance redstone to new heights
I'm talking vast automation, factories, machines that mine for me, better stuff-sorting, more transportation (Minecarts have a lot of potential not realized in Vanilla, IMO), stuff I can't even think of, and make it all cooler-looking.

>Let me prettify my world
More colors of wool, different heights of slab, cutting blocks into pieces, giving sheep tattoos (OK, maybe not that)

tl;dr - I've only ever played vanilla, I wanna mod now, help pls?

There is still hope.
>>
>>170518798
>First point
-Chisel and Wallpapercraft for more decoration blocks (Railcraft too but its more of a tech mod).
-Bibliocraft for literally any block you want wooden chest or crafting tables or more.
>Second point
Rtghas better biome than vanilla but Biomes o plenty has a better vanilla like charm when explroing those biomes, especiallt the magic forests. And you can also try Twilight Forest as a new dimension.
>third point
There are two options for it, tech mods or magic mods.
Magic mods tend to focus on powering the player and are less nonlinear than tech mods.
On the other hand tech mods focus more on resource gathering, especially proccessing ores in to gettinglike 4-5 times more ingoys out of them but they are pretty interesting to setup.

Good magic mods are Witchery or Thaumcraft (plays like a tech mod) while good tech mods are mekanism or magneticraft. There are many options but what I reccomend to avoid or play only during your first times are Thermal expansion and industrialcraft2.
>>
>>170518798
That's all super vague so it depends on your preferences
>>
>>170518798
>Fourth point
Theres tech mods for that, check curse to find the many available options but dont get too many big mods at once.

For transportation theres Traincraft but theres also teleporters and jetpacks.

>Fifth point
See first point but dont try microblocks, only Chisel and Bits if in 1.10.

As for versions 1.7.10 still has more content and is better optimized but months of trying to kill made 1.10.2 have some new content, mostly more magic mods.

>>170519449
Yeah, it's vague - I've never played modded minecraft before, so I don't know what my preferences are. This is to build a foundational knowledge and develop preferences and a playstyle from there. If you have any suggestions, or just mods you personally really enkoy, I'd love to hear them! :D
>>
>FTB OP
well, time to jump ship, this general has gone full reddit
>>
>>170520906
Well, you're starting from the foundation of "what do I want to do with minecraft", and mods are so expansive and cover such a variety of shit that I think that's kind of a limiting way to even look at it in the first place

What do you want to do? Do you like fantasy? Sci-fi? Realism? Do you want to cross the open oceans exploring island chains? What kind vehicle do you want to do it on? Do you want the world to be filled with people and places? Do you want that world to be dangerous or comfy? Do you want to help out a community or would you rather stay at home reading books?
I guess, basically, "what do you want to do in a video game?"- modders are usually about as autistic and plentiful as the players so no matter what niche bullshit you're into there's usually at least one option
>>
>>170521584
It's a meme you dip
>>
>>170521703
I want to explore an engaging world with different people, places, and terrains, but have a super cool base to hang out and build stuff in. I want a world that can be very challenging to survive in, or comfy if I turn off some of the dangerous stuff.

By helping out a community, do you mean quest-type stuff? That sounds like it could be fun unless it's restrictive.

As for sci-fi/fantasy/realism, I think whatever's the most fun is best - I prefer tech to pure magic/medieval in general, if that affects your recommendations, but I'm open for anything.
>>
Now I'm confused - Why do Not Enough Items and Too Many Items both exist for 1.7.10 if they serve what's apparently the same purpose?
>>
>>170522274
>I think whatever's the most fun is best
Well that's not very helpful at all
The kind of autism we're dealing with here means very few content mods will ever be objectively fun for everyone
I'm starting to think you'd be better off just going to youtube or google and taking whatever piques your interest
>>
>>170522689
Ok, is this better?

I'd prefer tech-based mods with a lot of late-game automation and lots of things to make and tinker with. In a magic mod, I'd want one that enriches exploration and combat.

Sorry, I'm trying to help y'all help me - I'm not the best at conveying my thoughts.
>>
>>170522585
NEI was originally a clone of TMI with the addition of recipe lookup. Generally, TMI updates to Minecraft snapshots and targets vanilla; NEI targets Forge.
>>
Guys I have a technical question, can anyone help?
>>
>>170522950
Alright, thanks!
>>
>>170523047
what's up?
>>
>EnderIO machine cases now use invar instead of iron (they're pretty much better TE stuff anyway)
>RFTools machine cases now need a BC iron circuit (the builder in particular is the entire BC in a block)
I'm safe I only change this much, right? I'll make sure to kill myself before I start changing every recipe to use quintuple compressed cobble.
>>
>>170522815
Well, I'm not very well versed in tech mods, but for magic mods, it depends on the version of the game you're playing
Thaumcraft is the one everyone plays, it adds a lot to different parts of the game
If you're specifically in the market for magical exploration and combat and not much else, twilight forest is a great pick, it adds a bunch of dungeons, bosses, biomes, and items and such all in it's own dimension
Really though most magic mods add pretty good stuff for combat, it's the exploration part you'll need to look harder for

Ok so I have some mods up and running, and I fiddled with the config to remove redundant ores and stuff. This is exciting! Can anyone think of any smaller utility mods? Just little things to make life easier. I remember there was one that made trees fall after one block was mined - stuff like that.

I know I asked this last thread, but I'm still looking for more:

So, I'm making a private server for family and friends who I'm trying to mostly-wean off of ATLauncher and FTB packs, who are used to a whole bucketload of bullshit.

The trick is now, that I'm trying to do it in 1.10.2. I've got the basics- You know, WAILA, NEI, Morpheus, Gravestone that kind of thing. I've got tech stuff, such as Mekanism, EnderIO, Immersive Engineering. I've also got storage- Drawers for lowtech, Refined Storage for hightech... but then I've also thrown in some other interesting stuff like Advanced Rocketry and Dooglamoo Cities, Embers, and magic stuff like Astral Sorcery or Runes of Wizardry.

Do you guys know of any good, interesting mods to add?

>/mcg/ has only been complaining about that for 4 years

And I got it down from 45 seconds to 40 seconds a few days ago, and to 28 seconds today after complaining about it.

The main culprits are:

* The deobfuscation transformer, providing runtime deobfuscation of mods, seems to take up a massive amount of the loading time (removing it drops the loading time by ~6 seconds). Obviously, this only works in a development environment, but nallar's CachingClassLoader should make it applicable to modpacks.
* For some mods (not all mods!), parts of the first pass of model loading can be skipped. This will NOT work for every mod, but it works for Charset.

I'm not sure if I can get it down further, but I can always try...

The reason I haven't complained about it earlier is, admittedly, because on my desktop PC the loading time is ~8-10 seconds, which is perfectly fine; however, I currently spend most of the week with a slower dual-core laptop, so I have to hack my way around that.
>>
>>170561094
It's slow because Forge probably CRC checks every class to be genuine because autism.
>>
>>170563795
Actually, it doesn't. Java does that automatically using Mojang's certificate files + hashes.

https://github.com/asiekierka/ClassCacheTweakerMC shaves off a significant amount of loading time by caching transformed classes - it's a proof of concept based on nallar's original but flawed (worked only on the server side) implementation and should be released soon.
>>
>>170565518

is there anything else that can be cached? It'd be nice to just have the main menu saved like a snapshot in an emulator.

The way to tell when a community has sold out is by the complete disappearance of community members.

- Most of the Mojang staff never appear publicly.
- Most of the Technic staff never appear publicly.
- Most of the RR staff never appear publicly.
- Most of the FTB staff never appear publicly.
- Most of the Curse staff never appear publicly.
- Most of the mod makers never appear publicly.

As long as Curse exists, no.

As for FTB, it's been on the downward spiral for years. Their core team is practically nonexistent now. They spend more money contracting artwork to hype packs than they do on anything else. Packs are made by one person, tested by one person, etc.
>>
>>170589491
Easiest way, still a pain tho:
1. Take all your bags\portable inventories you can, like a TC mirror hooked to some bottomless barrel
2. Enchant yourself with Chromaticraft ability that extends your reach to hundreds of blocks, the one that extends enchantments like Looting to long-range tools, and the one that makes shit magnet to you over huge distance
3. Reach Far Lands in the Chroma Dimension
4. Find a biome that looks like a gigantic mountains inside a equally deep holes, those are actually hollow, dig inside
5. drop your jaw at all those resources
6. start grabbing all the puryfing dust you can

Define "publicly".
>>
>>170582086
Either way, assuming "publicly" means "on public community websites/chats" (because the only real place you'd meet them publicly in real life is Minecon):

>Most of the Mojang staff never appear publicly.
True since literally 2010. Notch quit EsperNet's #minecraft around that time and Jens moved on to sit in a private, invite-only IRC channel. However, Dinnerbone hangs out on Freenode's #minecraft and Grum hangs out in multiple modding-related channels including #FTB - and you can actually ask him about things like 1.12 changes and he'll answer!

>Most of the Technic staff never appear publicly.
What staff? Their last pack maintainer, CanVox, quit months ago as he received a good job offer at Twitch - this is why they haven't released a single new official pack since.

>Most of the RR staff never appear publicly.
Kind of true - while they're all easily reachable at the ATLauncher and Resonant Rise discords, they don't seem to be promoting their pack as much as, for example, All The Mods.

>Most of the FTB staff never appear publicly.
Outside of Minecon and /r/feedthebeast, I think that might actually be true.

>Most of the mod makers never appear publicly.
Almost every mod maker you can imagine can be reached on IRC, Twitter or one of the three modding-related Discords. Most of them also appear on Reddit. I'd hardly call that "hiding".

Hi /mcg/!

New-to-modding anon from the beginning of the thread here, I think I got a bit carried away. I'm in version 1.7.10, with:

Mo' Villages
Treecapitator
ATG
Atum
Bibliocraft (w/ Forestry/Natura expansions)
Big Trees
Biomes O' Plenty
BiomeTweaker
BuildCraft
Chisel
Chocolate Quest
Climate Control
Connected Glass
CraftGuide
Dynamic Lights
Extra Biomes XL
Forestry
HEE
Highlands
Microblocks
InvTweaks
JourneyMap
Magneticraft
Mekanism (w/ tools/generators expansions)
MouseTweaks
Natura
NEI (w/ integration/addons)
OptiFine
PlayerAPI
Railcraft
Recurrent Complex
Roguelike Dungeons
Smart Moving/Render
Tinker's Construct
Thaumcraft (w/ NEI plugin)
Traincraft
Twilight Forest
Underground Biomes/Constructs
WAILA/WAWLA
Balkon's Weapon Mod
WTFCaveBiomes

With their dependencies, all run through forge. Am I missing anything vital, or things to make them play nicely together?
>>
>>170645384
>>170645384
You might get a few extra ore types- like two different types of copper from two different mods- but other than that, that looks pretty good!

I hope you have fun, anon! Modded minecraft can get really different than vanilla.
>>
>>170645384
>Biomes O' Plenty

Remove those and it's a decent modpack.

I'm having fun already! This is really different from Vanilla, and all the exploration is great! I can't wait to get a base going and really dig into the content.
>>
>>170645553
Any particular reason you don't agree with them?

Unrelated, the keybinds are giving me a headache - there's so much stuff going on.
>>
>lex says that any mod still using a coremod in 1.12 will be blacklisted for 1.13

I guess this is his plan to remove coremods. Not smart enough to do it through technology so he does it through ignorance and abuse of power.
>>
>>170645384
That's not carried away at all, bar some bloat, mods these days all play nice together bar stuff that needs to be configg'd, like oregen and ids.

>inv tweaks + mousetweaks
One of these has a memory leak when you hold down shift.
>magneticraft
Don't use the shelves.
>chocolate quest
It's just not a good mod.
It gens unbreakable stuff like ender portal blocks as deco.
>craftguide
You have NEI. Also get more addons for nei.
>bibliocraft with expansions
The expansions aren't necessary, there's framed things in vanilla bibliocraft that can be reskinned to anything.
>journeymap
Use voxelmap, journey is a laggy piece of shit
>optifine
Turn off everything in the performance tab if you don't want problems. Also get fastcraft.
>biomes o plenty and extrabiomes xl
You're only supposed to use one of them, both is way too much, there's a lot of overlap.
>>
>>170645821
biomes is bloat and filled with neon colors, vanilla with rtg is love is life
tinkers has less than zero balance; if anything it's balanced to be unbalanced
>>
>>170645643
One thing you should really get used to is using NEI. By namesearching things, you can figure out how to make items without having to alt-tab to check other wikis or anything.

I think you also need Applied Energistics. It's a storage mod- one where you instead store items inside of a computer system- it's a lot easier than keeping everything in chests. It's so handy that you'll wonder how you got along without it.

Also, something handy to do is to either make a smelter from Tinker's Construct, a Crusher from Mekanism, or a Grinder from AE. Those are machines that, with power or resources, allows you to crush or melt down metal ores in order to gain twice as many ingots out of a single ore block. The Smelter takes lava, the Crusher takes electrical power (which can be generated with a generator- the commonly-used minecraft power system is called RF, for Redstone Flux-) and the Grinder from AE, literally just needs you to stand there with a stick, holding right click as the grinder smushes up ores.

I would personally remove the biomes mods and add 'Realistic Terrain Generation' or 'Realistic World Generation'. Both of those are pretty damn good, and pretty too.

Oh, and to get started with Thaumcraft, another bigger mod, make a wand (1 stick, 2 iron caps) and right click on a bookcase with it.
>>
>>170644302
let's not forget about the BS game censorship (manhunt, yandere sim...), the terrible esports bandwagon and all the bugs.

Oh yeah, did you hear their justification for not telling the dev why it's banned? "We don't tell users why they're banned, so we don't see why we should inform developers." I mean, I hate YandereDev because he gets super asshurt and cries to Reddit when you criticize his code, but Jesus Christ, Twitch.

>>
>>170646058
OK! Thanks for all the tips - I'm going to try disabling everything but inv/mouse tweaks, then testing them one at a time for memory leaks.

I'm already having problems with chocolate quest - it spawns hostile, powerful mobs on peaceful, in addition to what you said. That's out.

I'll remove CraftGuide - I was reading NEI's documentation, and apparently it serves the same function but better.

I'll try out VoxelMap - I don't like JourneyMap's gui. The round buttons and icons don't really mesh with the other menus, and that bothers me.

I've already done that with optifine, and I'll look into Fastcraft.

Another anon - >>170646124 - has given me good reason to remove BoP, so I'll stick with XBXL.

--

>>170646357
That's super helpful, I'll definitely make those, try them out, and figure out what suits me best.

Applied Energistics looks cool, but I was worried about putting in too many mods early on - especially ones with lots of tiered content to learn about. I'll add it in, though, if you think it's suitable.

I'll look into RTG - I have the biomes mods to give more variety to my worlds, and I'll remove them if they're not useful or don't bring anything exciting to the table. I like them because they also add a lot of mobs, like squirrels, birds, rams, and stuff. That makes the world seem more alive to me.

Thanks for the Thaumcraft tip! I'm very excited to see what's in store for me there.

--

As for >>170646124

I'm going to remove BoP and stick with XBXL.

For Tinkers' Construct, I think I'll try it out, and if the lack of balance makes the game unfun I'll cut it. For now, though, I'm going to experiment with the tools and stuff just to see what all I can do. I'll certainly bear what you said in mind though!

>>
>>170647139
The memory leak is specifically caused by an interaction with nei, apparently.
Forces everything to render when you hold down shift or something.
Possibly.

Again, I don't remember which one causes it.
>>
>>170647358
Ah, ok. Another anon said it was InvTweaks, so I removed that pending research.
>>
>>170647514
No no, I'm the same anon.
It's either mousetweaks/invtweaks interacting with nei that causes the leak.
>>
>>170647139
Another handy thing with NEI that took me weeks to find out is that when you have all the parts for something in your inventory, and you're in the crafting table, you can click on what you want to make on NEI, and shift-click the [+] button. It'll autofill the item you're making. A lot of mods end up with problems about what's called 'microcrafting', where you have to craft item A in order to craft item B in order to craft item C, like a shitty nesting doll from hell. Shiftclicking with NEI is a good way to push past that bullshit.
>>
>>170647594

I saw that >>170646970 specified InvTweaks, and I found n issue on its github supporting the post. I'll do a separate install and fiddle around with them, though, just so we can get an experimental conclusion.
>>
>>170633276
It was on his twitter.
>>
>>170647728
Oh wow, that's really neat. Thanks! I'm gonna try gibbing in materials for high end machines with NEI and see if I can make them in one fell swoop.

--

Also, >>170646124, I really like the crafting bench and how it keeps the items, so even if I never make the tools that's a really cool feature. Would you consider the smeltery overpowered?
>>
>>170648178
LMAO that's fucking great.
>>
>>170646058
>chocolate quest
>It's just not a good mod.
It's been years and this still chaps my ass
You'd think at least one other person would try to make a good dungeon mod that doesn't just stuff them in alternate dimensions or make them too simple
But no, we still only have that clunky poorly coded piece of shit with hordes of godawful unique mobs everywhere, shit that breaks the second it spawns in the world, and the exact same dungeons placed every ten feet with little variation

>>
Oh, also!

Would y'all recommend Mo' Creatures? I was worried it would be bloaty and unnatural to have lots of stuff spawning, but if it's mostly biome-appropriate and it adds to the experience, I'd definitely consider adding it.
>>
>>170648190
The best part is that once you get Applied Energistics storage stuff going, you can build a terminal for it that has a crafting table built-in. And from that point, you can instantly craft anything out of your ENTIRE STORAGE SYSTEM instead of having to have it in your inventory.

Also, for the crafting bench, stick a chest or two next to it. Then you can store stuff and craft at the same time. Not as awesomely as AE, but still good.

The smeltery isn't what's overpowered- it's the way you can make tools with it.

The way Tinker's Construct works is that you can make tool parts and alloys out of items or metals. Either by knapping stone in the part maker or whatever, or making a mold and pouring metal into it. Once you have all the parts- like, say, a pickaxe being made out of a pick head, a tool rod, and a binding- you have a pickaxe made out of different parts. You could have a binding made out of paper, or gold, or iron or whatever, a pick head made out of steel or manyullyn or whatever, and a tool rod made out of hope and dreams or whatever. Each part gives a tool different mechanical benefits and abilities...

And then you can upgrade the tool far far beyond that by throwing resources at it. It gets to the point where you have a tool you can recharge with RF to repair it, and it can instantly slice through everything with every single movement, and then there's no fun left in the game because you can instantly behead the wither with an upgraded, quartz-covered manyullyn-obsidian cleaver.

>>170648830
I WOULD ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND WITCHERY. It's like my favorite mod, ever, bar none. Potion crafting is awesome, rituals are more awesome, and infusions are amazing too... The only thing that could be fixed or tweaked is the silly crafting parts and the way the altar gets energy. I would've recommended it before, but I didn't want to mention random mods that aren't necessary.
>>
>>170648830

Witchery is okay, but it tends to get overshadowed by more overpowered mods/add-ons.

Stuff doesn't instantly dissappear, and it's not all items, only some of them, so at first you think you've just misplaced them.

If you stumble across a 'friendly' witch near one of those circles who has a name, doesn't kill you, and laughs at you for being a noob, mark the location. That witch will later join your coven, in Witchery, and allow you to cast greater rituals and such. But for them to consider you a practitioner, you need a familiar. You can pick several familiars, from frogs, cats, owls, etc.

>Owls
Allow your broom riding to fly better. Not quite important, because it's easier to devour the soul of a bat and use that to fly
>Cat
Lets you do curses better. Curses aren't important since you're not playing PvP
>Toad
Gives you a chance to make an extra brew when you brew stuff, and all of your brews are more effective. Generally the best, unless you don't want to do the bat infusion, in which case the owl is.

Mouse over items and hit U. This will check the item's uses through NEI. You can do the same with R, to see different recipes that you can use to make an object. Whenever you end up with a resource you're not sure how you can use, U is the best way to figure things out. NEI is really a life saver.

Railcrafts creosote and coal coke work as fuel for the boiler generator to turn into steam, a great mid game power generator.

this realistic worldgen is really throwing me for a loop, there aren't any cliffs around to get stone from for a furnace.

I used soapstone cobble(I assume it's a stone/cobble analog) that I found under the dirt, and I'm still mining to find coal ore to fuel it, because I don't want to use my wood up.

Next step is to find ores, and then set up a furnace thingy that doubles the ores - I'm not sure what I'm going to use yet, but this is exciting! Mods really add a world of content, this feels like a new and much more enjoyable game.

The easiest way to double ores at this point for you would probably be the AE2 grinder. Takes no power, only effort. Make the grinder, make a turning winch thingy that's made by making a huge upside-down L shape in the crafting cube with sticks, and then turn the winch.

And now you feel the way I felt when my family started playing minecraft with mods. We picked up an FTB huge superpack years ago, back in 1.6.4, and we got completely lost. Built a compound working together, and everyone was rather surprised when they found my huge, hidden underground thaumcraft base hiding beneath our smeltery.

Ok, so resoundingly lukewarm response. I'll not be using those, then, at least not for now - I might want to try them out later and draw my own conclusions. but that makes my current decision easier.
>>
>>170663759
Blood Magic is pretty good for the most part but has a large barrier to entry
Aside from the wealth of content and systems there are to learn and understand, the mod is a massive time/resource sink, about as grindy as any late-game tech mod with less possibility for automation, and you'll need to do a lot of that grinding just to be able to access a lot of the mod's systems
>>
>>170663759
I hated IndustrialCraft, because it adds tons and tons of microcrafting. You have to gather rubber and cook it and then take copper, turn it into wires with tools, mix copper and rubber to make a circuit and then upgrade the circuit with glowstone powder/lapis to make a super circuit and then wrap it in plates that you also have to hammer down ingots to make plates... Yeah. It's pretty bad.

Blood Magic is kinda ehh. Thaumcraft is more large-scale, and witchery is a lot more fun.
>>
>>170664949
Listen to this guy: >>170665053

One big weakness Blood Magic has as a magic mod is the sheer grinding involved. It's almost necessary to get tech mods to make the grind tolerable, and if you did choose a tech mod to supplement Blood Magic, you already have deprecated many of the sigils with said tech mod.

Same problem can be seen in Ars Magica 2, a magic mod that allows the player to create custom-made spells. There are TONS of materials needed, and your accessibility of spell properties depend on how much dungeon loot you can get your hands into.

ChromatiCraft's Far lands is based on Minecraft's far lands (which is basically a bijillion blocks away from the starting position, and is where the land gets all screwy).

IC2 and Blood Magic are worth playing with and at end game they're probably more powerful than anything else you have installed, but you have to stepstone your way up to the entry barrier (autocrafting required for IC2, mob spawner required for BM). You could give IC2 a miss if you think the tech mods you already have are fast enough, but Blood Magic has unique features worth checking out (like summoning the demon city).

Just mark her for now, and leave the chunk so that it unloads.

Later, when you've progressed through witchery enough to do a familiar bonding ritual, you'll be considered a 'real' witch. Then you go back to Isadora, do the quest she gives you, and then she'll join your coven.

From then on, she'll pop in whenever you need her to do a ritual, and sometimes she might pop into your house to hang out for a bit.

I was attempting to make a maze setup for Recurrent Complex a few months back. Then i realized how fucked up and confusing the maze and tile settings where and how useless the wiki is explaining its very "simple" concepts.

>ChromatiCraft
Random anon's blog here of his adventures in colorful dragon dildo land got me interested Well i have no interest in the crafting and blocks, how is it for passive word gen structures? They seem to interact world with the world passively in ways that would be fun to exploit. Like baiting hostile monster waifus to towers to deal with them. And they seem good eye candy for doing long survival hikes.

>RF energy
Many mod exists to make complicated multiblock RF power setups, but beyond using power to process resources and simple base defenses, what is the purpose? My basic building needs are covered by Dooglamoo Cities and Heat&Climate mod. What mods use RF for construction, adventure, or not feeling lonely in the world...
>>
>>170678873
Clashing 32x and 16x textures always look bad and that mod sounds like an absolute nightmare on inventories and chests. Probably nice for decor though.
>>
Hey guys! Noob here, with a question. I have several different ores and ingots with the same names, but from different mods, and with different colors/textures. Is there any way to fix this, or am I going to be stuck living with the inconsistencies?

>>170679158
I hadn't even thought of organizing - this might get cut, now that I think about it. So far, I haven't found any of the underground structures it promotes, so unless I can keep those enabled and disable the stone replacement, I don't think it's viable in the long run.
>>
>>170679147

Alot of ChromatiCraft's structures are those deadly pylons. They don't seem to get in the way of anything since if they do spawn on something, they usually spawn broken and inactive. There are other ChromatiCraft structures, but they are all strategically hidden for the most part, or in the Nether's case, on top of it.
>>
>>170679147

Also another thing to note, Rainbow forests prevent all hostile mobs from spawning in it, unless you have Lycanite's mobs mod also, in which you will get only a few hostiles.
>>
>>170679624
You can check the configuration file in the folder the instance is in and see if you can tweak it, you probably can unless it's a shit mod. You'd have to remake your world though cause you'd be removing a large potion of your world from what it seems.
>>
>>170679624
Usually, you'll need to go into different mod configs and turn off their ore generation systems. Or alternatively, oredict can usually deal with different ingots and ores to grind them up into the same type of dust. Immersive Engineering copper and Ember copper might be different, but if you grind them up in a Mekanism crusher you'll end up with Mekanism copper dust.

That's a great start! Personally, I would recommend placing stairs in the shape of a pyramid at the base of your house, instead of the trailer-style stairs you have going on there. Switching to panes might help give it a better 'aesthetic', as well as maybe some wooden slabs on the bottom half of the roof blocks, like this picture? I'm absolutely retarded when it comes to pipes and shit. I get how to pipe items into a Storage Controller from Storage Drawers, but how do I add a pipe that retrieves items from it if they can't be stored in the network? It just spits the items back out. Or do I have to use a hopper?

>>
>>170686426
Normally: If a pipe does not have a destination for an item (all chests are full/no dedicated drawer left empty) then it will not be pulled from the source. If there WAS a destination for an item in a chest/drawer but that was filled while it is in the pipe system, it would attempt to enter the storage system and then pipe to the next possible destination, perhaps the source it came from. If the original location has no place, it will likely be spat out of the pipe into the world.
This is the case for most pipe systems I know of.

nah, I'd go to your email, delete every trace that you ever owned an mc account, switch your mc account to my email, keep a copy of your receipt, and delete any evidence of me stealing it. i've done that 5 times on the accounts I bought that had the same password for their mc and email.

Not necessarily, if I understand what you're trying to do. The controller for a Drawer system will take in and place items into drawers that it's connected to.

With EIO Item Conduits, set the "Insert" pipe on the Controller to a higher priority than the one on the overflow chest.

With Buildcraft Pipes, place a Clay Insertion Pipe on the controller, another stone pipe past the clay pipe, and an overflow chest on the stone pipe.

Also, two points have to be made:

1. I believe that a workaround is perfectly possible (ICacheableCapability with an isValid() interface on it, much like how modders cache tile entities by querying isInvalid()). I asked KL about it but am yet to receive his opinion.
2. When I was working on my mod, I have not encountered any problems related to capability accessing being slow myself. While it probably has some kind of performance penalty, it was too small to be concerned about optimizing it compared to things like block logic.

What exactly is that?
>>
>>170696187

Heat and Climate mod stuff.

Allows you to smelt powder blocks into metal blocks that can't normally be smelted in a furnace.

For example, Nickel Silver has to be made this way, so you have to make an environment that has little to no airflow by using opaque blocks, and then use a combustion furnace, which burns shit and superheats a 5x5 area using Torque provided bythe windmill, to change the temperature of the inside from Kiln to Smelting.

Then you place the powder block and wait a few seconds. Bam, metal block.

You can also cook using this mechanic or steam/superfreeze things.
>>
>>170696492
That's a much better implementation of temperature than in Enviromine.

It's a bit annoying early game because being near fire or lava damages you, but once you fund silver, you can just craft a charm to give you fire resistance.

Only thing I wish it had was baubles compat, because as it is now, the charms only work if they're in the first toolbar of your inventory (not the hotbar).
>>
>>170697050
>at which point they blow the fuck out you out

>>170697120
Now that is crazy. Not even Enviromine requires you to wear a bauble just to protect yourself from heat sources. To be fair, despite the additional environmental hazards added by Enviromine, there are few items or armor that can combat those hazards.

This mod is good. The system is why this is Possible. With a hotter source and closed it can smelt ingots. The point is there are blocks that react to head/humidity/airflow. is used for smelting, cooking (its extensive), to preparing gun powder and leather.

You can add a stick to meat, place it, light a log on fire, and watch it cook, ready to eat. More covenant without setting up a furnace and instead using flint.

You also need to have protective wear, armor now has a temperature tolerance rating, although the default settings is pretty safe, without leather/wool, a furnace will hurt you by proxy.

Tools, abilities, machinery, the usual stuff.
The guy focuses on his exploration instead of those.
There's stuff like portals, item inserters that can teleport items into inventories or entities(like pillars\pools of liquids\GUIless stuff), wireless liquid and RF transportation, turrets from small to giant tower-defence fuck you multiblocks, apparatuses that mask your presence from mobs around itself (it's somewhat fun seeing mobs walk around you cluelessly), structures that protect your life or blocks from being removed around themselves in huge radius (kinda like TC warding), assortment of "wands" to teleport huge distances at cost of your lumens, mine out huge areas of non-stone blocks, equal trade, carry entities, etc
Crystal Orchestra to compose and play your own music
Kind of an equivalent of EE2 transmutation, except with a system of 16 different "elements" as a currency instead of EMC. It's also so thorough in looking up recipes that it works with almost any modded stuff as long as it's not too obscure
Integration with a bunch of other mods like AE, TC, Botania, TiC, RoC etc adding stuff to them like tool parts, caps, flowers etc.
A wide selection of Enchantments for yourself that give you special abilities, like extending your reach to dozens of blocks so you can mine from like a hundred blocks afar, shift entire continents, phase (noclip) through mundane blocks like stone\dirt making them invisible and intangible for yourself, dash around, summon thunderstrikes, etc etc etc
Biome painters, tools, "guns", tnt that instead of exploding itself causes explosions at set coordinates etc etc
Generally a lot of magical shit like you would normally expect

Noob here, found my favorite mod:
https://mods.curse.com/mc-mods/minecraft/229073-hats

Serious note: I've decided that the sheer amount of conflicts and redundancies, not to mention a few very pervasive mods I didn't want, leave me little choice but to create a new world with an updated mod library. Before starting the world, I'm going to try to figure out how to eliminate recipe conflicts and redundant ore generation, and then I'm going to experiment with presets until I find the worldgen that suits me best.

Anyone who knows how to eliminate conflicts and redundancies, your knowledge would be appreciated - I had, after all, literally never touched a mod before Thursday. Anyone who wants an updated mod list, ask! It's changed since >>170645384.

So I found this thing, and all around it are super tough zombies that get bigger when I hit them, and "wisps" that float around and shoot lightning at me. The chest has some good stuff, but I'm not looting it until I can survive the area long enough to figure out what it is. All I know is that it's from Thaumcraft - can anyone tell me what it's good for, if anything? It's relatively near my base.
>>
>>170708435
I lured a few of the zombies and safespotted them from behind a tree - the dawn burning made them big so I didn't have to do as much damage, and I could hide from them. One of them dropped a zombie brain. No idea what that does.

First off, DO NOT destroy or dismantle that thing.
That's a "wisp shrine", a structure that transforms nearby terrain into Eerie biome and spawns both Wisps and Furious Zombies.

Better make an enclosure to prepare it for a Wisp spawner farm for the essences wisps drop. Wisp essence is rich in Auram, which is used for certain mid-game items.

If you find dealing with Wisps annoying, make a Shock Wand Focus.

>>170708630
it doesn't have a function per se
but it's got evil node in the centre that acts as a monster spawner, nodes get pretty useful later, as well as lots of wisp ethereal shards and zombie brains
you don't want it right in your base, but having it nearby is pretty handy later on

Like it takes a special sort of autism to start an offline save and make a bunch of NPCs to be your friends and populate your world. That autism is what makes him a good lets player.

Maybe thats the problem. You ahve to be autistic to successfully record yourself playing a video game and be entertaining doing it, because you'd probably be doing the retarded shit that makes it entertaining whether you were being recorded or not. western LPers have basically decided to change the entertainment from "the game being played" to "the person(s) playing the game". I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a strategy to ward off people leaving if a game becomes less popular, but it's kinda silly.

the facecam stuff becoming the norm weirds me out - I remember a guy parodying an LP some years back by doing just a facecam instead of showing what was actually happening. I'm almost afraid LPs are going to turn into that as a serious thing in the west.

It's not possible, because the way this works is that the Block Registry object will return Blocks.AIR for any block registry key not present - I believe changing the default to Blocks.STONE could have negative effects on a fair amount of mods, which do "== Blocks.AIR" to check for blocks which aren't present.

It's probably possible to do somehow, but your best bet would be creating an external mod to read the ID map from level.dat and pass through all chunks - this will *not* solve the ItemStacks, however, which will probably disappear. On newer Minecraft versions, fixing ItemStacks is actually possible as they are all ran through a set of "updaters", but I'm not sure when that was added - I don't think it was pre-1.8, however.

I mean, fuck, man. you're in a singleplayer session, we can tell what you're pointing at with the reticle. stop trying to "emote" ingame. once you get past the "looking up/down and groaning at the other players in multi" stage you're trying too hard for minecraft.

Almost every API that's ever been used in Minecraft uses a Java interface, which is about as fast as you can get.

Lex's retarded implementation uses a system where you make generic calls and query if something can even accomplish something first, leaving you to go in this roundabout way through this generic communication channel to do anything instead of just directly calling Java methods.

There is more programmer AIDS in Minecraft and Forge than most Java developers have seen in their lifetimes.

i'm on 1.10.2

I want only to use this thing once, before returning to normal. Just for a try, remove the mod, and open the game, making the map fix herself and reputting the block.AIR normally?
>>
>>170719261
There's reasons for the capabilities API, though:

* I cannot, normally, attach an Interface to another mod, or vanilla's, tile entity. This means that introducing mod<->mod compatibility without hard dependencies usually involves complex spidery kludges like BuildCraftCompat had and/or @Optional spam - both aren't ideal.
* In order to proxy interfaces, Forge MultiPart had to dynamically create Java classes and replace the entire TileEntity without anything in the Minecraft engine noticing. As you can imagine, that didn't exactly work well, and was the primary reason for most FMP-related bugginess/instability in its early days.

Also, stop abusing the word "generic". Generics are just compiler markers - a List<String> is no different from a List<Integer>, except for compiler errors - you can cast one to the other and it'll probably work, outside of the cast warnings and the fact your program will probably crash fairly quickly.
>>
>>170719463
Yes, the best route is to remove the mod, backup the map, open the game, see if the block ID map did not get corrupted for some unexplainable reason (if it did, restore from backup and try again - *yes*, it is unpredictable), then add the new mod.

It will leave air holes in the world, but that's just the way it is. If you don't like it you'll have to ask someone to make an external program to fix this.
>>
>>170719915
>don't like it you'll have to ask someone to make a program to fix this.

I know exactly how it works if i remove the mod and is exactly the thing I want to avoid, but thanks for the tip.

I would guess it could help a lot of people a mod like this, but i am no modder. It doesn't seems hard to do, either

Arguably, the capability system also has problems:

* The EnumFacing enforcement is absurd, because it fits nothing except tile entities (and maybe entities) - but capabilities are also put on ItemStacks (poorly, see below) and Worlds. A different route is what MCMultiPart did - have a generic "ISlot" interface, then provide default ISlots for each side (EnumFacing) as well as a center, but also let modders provide additional slots for whatever they need. (MCMultiPart, for example, has additional slots for edges and corners of a block.)
* ItemStacks, unlike Worlds, Entities and TileEntities, do not store any pointer to their owner (aside from item frames!?). That means the ItemStack cannot reliably say "I want to be updated now", breaking capability synchronization and ItemStack replacement unless workarounds are made (IFluidContainerItem does have a workaround for buckets, which change the Item on emptying/filling). In other words, they're only useful on the server side and NOT useful on the client side.
* Capabilities cannot be cached, though I haven't seem an actual performance issue caused by it - getCapability(), for most mods, is literally three == checks and a return; this is much less of a concern than, say, caching tile entities, for which a lookup nowadays involves two HashMaps (I think)? Of course, getCapability() can easily get more complex (external attachment via Forge events causes a Map to be created), meaning

Finally, and most importantly:
* Capability equality checks on ItemStacks are done by serializing all capabilities to NBT and comparing the NBT tags. This is horrendously slow. I suggested it as a workaround to fix a bug where capabilities were ignored in ItemStack equality checks, but I made a huge point about replacing it with a proper equals()-based system as soon as compatibility can be broken (1.10, 1.11). Sadly, that last part never happened.

Because sometimes the player has problems getting to coal, or doesn't feel like mining it. It's the same reason you can make wool out of string, and the same reason zombies can occasionally drop crops.

or, you can /debugtest, go into creative, and smack the (pylon node?) with an elemental manipulator to cycle it through the colors, if you don't feeling like putting up with that bullshit. fills all of the cc machines to max though.

non-Draconic Evolution energy storage is shit, that's a fact. Should draco memeo be in every pack? I don't think so.

Mods that gate on stucturegen are the absolute cancer and I wholly endorse minetweaking or straight up cheating right around their bullshit.

Assuming the argument that it's not TiCon that needs fixing, infinite durability is probably a good starter.

Alright I think I'm ready to look for the monument now.
>>
>>170774409
Infinite durability with the ability to selectively and progressively upgrade your tools with enchantments would be great, instead of the random shitshow we have now. I guess part customization would still fit better in a mod just like how it already is.
>>
>>170771965
Power is a far more fun concept than tools. I dont get why people care so much about a tool mining shit faster than other mods tools when they end up getting their resources from thin air anyway.

And I found it. Now how to find such a structure like this, well you just have to follow the patterns of your color wheel, where the opposites cross is how you triangulate where it is.

Anyway, the goal here is to basically restore the structure, first thing is to place in the missing blocks, which thanks to Ruskea, I had more than enough blocks to do so.
