Read the General problems FAQ before asking questions. If you still need help, post your specs (speccy screenshot), OS, emulator version number and details of what's wrong.

Please contribute to the wiki if you discover any inaccuracies or have relevant information to append.

READ THE WIKI BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE:
>Where do I get games
OR
>What is the best emulator for...

Check out the wiki for the emulator you're using if you run into trouble, there may be a solution there too, often including recommendations for optimal game settings.

Remember to submit bug reports or shit won't get fixed.

It's one of PC's largest benefits, not being limited to one platform. I love video games, I don't just love PC games. Some of my favourite games are on consoles. I'm not some "PC is better than consoles" kiddy, they all have their benefits, emulation is one of PC's.

i3-7350K or i5 4690k? Which one would give me the best performance for most emulators?
>>
>>170267237
I believe the i3 has better single core performance. I'd rather pay the extra $ for the 7600k though.
>>
>>170228842
To play emulators on your old CRT TV. Composite inputs are extremely common.
>>
>>170265805
>>
>>170267237
Theoretically i3-7350K should absolutely crush almost every other CPU in the market for emulator performance.
I say theoretically because there simply aren't enough tests for it to confirm this.
>>
>>170268602
>I believe the i3 has better single core performance.
Yep, it got the best single core performance on passmark.

>I'd rather pay the extra $ for the 7600k though.

Why are some people so anti-shader?

Some people act like CRT shaders are the only shaders that exist.

Dolphin and PCSX2 have the option for dual and triple cores though. Upcoming emulators are more likely to make use of more cores too.

>>
>>170269530

>>
>>170269628

>>
>>170235318
BotW is an immersive sim tho.
>>
>>170269679
>As for CEMU, pretty sure it only uses one core.
If that is true then an i3-7350K should perform well on it.
>>
>>170269035
>But it's twice the price anon
well if the price gap is that big for you, then the i3 isn't a bad choice. Sales tax ruins good sites for me, like newegg. So for me, i5 7600k is only about 56$ more.

>>170269234
I heard that Dolphin's multicore support was no good. You're certainly right about PCSX2 though.
>>
>>170269778
I don't think it's realistic to expect it to remain that way forever.
>>
Would a Celeron really get the same performance of a FX if single core is what matters?
>>
>>170270243
I thought the same way about Dolphin but if that is any indication, multicore support is decades away.
>>
I'm trying to play Fire Emblem Awakening on Citra. I'm currently running BE 42 because it still has geometry shading (otherwise stages would be unplayable).
Is there any custom build out there that can do better? I'm mostly looking for FPS locking.
>>
>>170270537
I think RPCS3 makes good use of multicore and multithreading.
>>
>>170270715
That is because the PS3 architecture makes use of multiple cores natively. Even then it depends entirely on the game being emulated.
>>

Searched all around for an answer to this and couldn't find anyone with a similar problem, so I'll try asking here--running Xenoblade Chronicles X 1.0.2U on Cemu 1.7.2c and all is fine up until I try to start a game, at which point sound appears to be severely delayed from the visuals despite appearing to run not far behind 30fps, and everything is dark. >>

my problem is this

4:3 on lcd (actually oled but I guess it's the same) is "intended" so circles are circles
but since horizontal pixels get stretched I get ugly text (I'm playing earthbound, tons of text)

8:7 on lcd the text looks better since it's not stretched but everything else feels "too tall", probably because the devs accounted for the 4:3 crt stretch

I cannot win

Most DSiWare are available on the 3DS shop, those aren't going away. Of the DSi exclusive ones, most were taken down years ago. You'll just need to track down a DSi with them installed to dump them(dumping is incredibly easy, no hacking needed).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_aspect_ratio

SNES and NES display with 8:7 PAR on NTSC TVs because of the pixel rate of their PPUs.

http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/Overscan

>The NTSC color subcarrier is at 39,375,000/11 Hz = 3.5795 MHz. The NES master clock is always 6 times the color subcarrier frequency because there are 12 hues on the NES PPU, and the color generator uses a double-pumped counter to generate the hue signal. So the PPU's pixel rate is 1/4 of the master clock, or 6/4 of the color subcarrier, or 39,375,000*6/4/11 = 5.3693 million pixels per second. (This pixel rate appears to have originated in the TMS9918 VDP used in the ColecoVision. The NTSC Sega Master System VDP and Super NES PPU use this same rate, as does the Sega Genesis VDP in the 256-pixel mode that several multiplatform titles used.)

>Multiplying the pixel rate by the scanline length gives 39,375,000*6/4/11*640/(135,000,000/11) = 280 pixels per scanline. The PPU puts signal in 256 of these and a border at the left and right sides. The color of this border is the same as the backdrop color (usually the value in $3F00). This makes the pixel aspect ratio on a 4:3 TV to be 240/280*4/3 = exactly 8:7, or about 1.143:1.

I'm thinking of getting into emulator coding, and I'd like to learn C/C++ to get up to speed on the (apparently) most popular language used to code them. "Most popular" based on going through the GitHub/Sourceforge sites on the emulators I'm interested in, and noticing that practically all of them are made in C++.

I've got a physical textbook on C from ~2003, but I know C11 was released ~2011, so I was wondering if any anons had links for good CURRENT resources on C/C++. Info. Sys./Meteorology double-degree here btw.

If your goal is solely emulation development, do not waste your time & money.

>Oh yeah, are there any resources for understanding emulator-specific topics related to coding?
After reading a few books and mastering the basics, it's best to just jump right in. I've learned a lot by simply reading and tweaking the code of emulators.

I think learning C before C++ is a good idea. Those beginner books teach more practical information. I recommend reading "The C programming Language". Very good book imo. It's also important to learn assembly.

Don't listen to anyone recommending you to start off with "easy" systems like Gameboy. It's a waste of time, unless you actually are interested in emulating those particular systems.

It depends. Some games look better at 4:3, while some look better at 8:7. Just do whatever you think looks better.

When in doubt, go by the console's actual resolution.
The SNES outputs 256x224, which is 8:7. Since this is what the developers designed the visuals around, most SNES games are going to look best at 8:7, but there are some exceptions where the developer took into consideration the 4:3 ratio of TVs.

Of course not. The shape of the pixels is what's 8/7. I don't understand why people don't get that pixel aspect ratio is more important than the display aspect ratio. Everyone knows that the DAR of CRT TVs is 4:3, but the consoles have different pixel shapes depending on their pixel clocks. NES and SNES just happen to have pixels shaped as 8:7 rectangles.

Why, what's wrong with assembly? CS degree is pointless imo, unless you're trying to get a job in that field.

>You wouldn't happen to know of resources for learning assembly language, would you?
Not sure how great these books are in comparison to others, but for x86 assembly, I enjoyed reading "Assembly Language for x86 Processors" and "The Art of Assembly Language" although I never finished either book. These days I usually just review the instruction set, or google specific things.

If you're concerned with optimizations, Agner Fog has written a lot of good information on that. For instance he has measured things like latency for each instruction on several cpus.

If you're interested in learning about assembly languages used in consoles, such as MIPS, ARM, etc, then the main thing you want to focus on is learning the instruction set. It would be helpful to know which systems you're interested in. You can try contacting emudevs, for great resources.

It's not noob friendly, but I don't think it's that difficult. I didn't really understand how programming works, until I learned assembly. Being able to understand the code that your compiler generates, is very helpful. Knowing assembly is also valuable for debugging. Be sure to practice a lot. Practicing makes a world of a difference.

Don't fall for memes. There's a lot of things commonly said, that are completely wrong, such as "compiled code is faster than handwritten assembly", "global variables are the devil", "never use goto", etc.

A better question is why are you using DeSmuME to play Pokemon rather than DraStic?

Zeromus has damaged DeSmuME beyond repair, and one of his main points of sabotage has always been Pokemon emulation. There's literally no reason to use DeSmuME if you're on Android, and even on other platforms it's useless for Pokemon games.

Right, but with a deeper blue sky than what can be presented through sRGB. It appears purple here because NTSC can display deeper blues than sRGB and the extra blue value above 255 is being clipped so the red has more influence.

Emulators have less lag than the originals.

i never understood the mentality that "they closed source because they are hiding the fact that they are using illegal docs". It's not hard to cover your tracks. MAME devs still get credited for REing the N64's RDP and RSP.. Even though they clearly just copy pasted from oman's archive. They hardly did any reversing for the RDP or RSP, if any at all..

I think the assumption that they closed source, to continue getting donations, is much more logical.

I have GTX 1080 / i7- 6700k @ 4.5Ghz. I'm playing Super Mario 3d World with shader cache and with graphics pack at 1080p.

Game runs generally 60 fps but for example in world 1-5, the circus themed one I get screen flicker and the game drops to 5-10 fps where you need to jump to reach higher level. It looks like it's related to screen buffering as when it flickers it starts to flash two different screens, so you can see the back buffer containing an image from different area...

I'm wondering is this universal or is it my setup somehow? Because people always talk how flawlessly CEMU runs and how you can play especially 3d world in 60 fps etc... But I'm having these small issues in lot of games (I know about the shader caching, but for this game I have a ready made cache...).

Non-developers somehow seem to think docs or 'SDKs' can magically be converted into emulation code.

Most if not all open source 8-bit / 16-bit emus were made using informations from leaked official docs at some point, yet it would hardly be provable by just reading their source code.

That's just plain ignorance and stupidity mixed with conspiracy 'theories' addiction or loser's mental need to denigrate the work of someone. The 'Oman archive' drama that everyone is reusing without having ever really compared angrylion's code with verilog implementation of what was an earlier version of N64 RSP, did not helped either...

Its actually more common than you think
Unless the emulator in question is cycle accurate timing issues like that will probably exist.
Both PCSX2 and PPSSPP run games at higher framerates than the original console to the point where games which were supposed to have slowdown don't have them anymore without any overclocking. In case of PPSSPP it even led to a curious case of overheating with the God of War games which had no internal limit built in.

Question about Mayflash gamecube to wiiu/pc adapter.

I have owned this since I think before the legitimate Nintendo one released. So far it is perfect for Dolphin and on some emulators, but some other emulators don't play nice with it. Is it by chance the Dolphin driver you install? I have 24 hours to figure this out before a few month trip. Or I just bring X1 controllers instead of trying to get cube controllers to work.

Appreciate any information. I have tried a few basic things but I think the specific emulators just hate the adapter. If anyone knows a work around let me know.

(ps. Does retroarch play nice with the adapter? I might just go that route if so. Won't be home for a few hours to test it and want to gather ideas before hand)

>Non-developers somehow seem to think docs or 'SDKs' can magically be converted into emulation code.
While I agree that it can't magically be converted, some parts are very easy to copy paste into your code. There's a reason Musyx wasn't HLEd for years, same for certain graphics microcodes.

When I looked at Oman's archive, I was sorely disappointed because not only did many people copy paste code from it (without openly acknowledging it), they didn't even do a proper job.

>The 'Oman archive' drama that everyone is reusing without having ever really compared angrylion's code with verilog implementation of what was an earlier version of N64 RSP, did not helped either...
I respect Angrylion's work and I appreciate that he credited Oman, but it's clear some parts are copy pasted from Oman. To his defense, the parts I noticed that are obviously copy pasted, were inherited from MAME's codebase. Some of the copy pasted code is very low quality. I really don't understand why they felt the need to copy it without improving it.

So I was thinking of getting a PS2 emulator to play the MEtal Gear series since I have never played a single metal gear game in my life.

But I want to because I hear they're amazing.

Just one question: I heard that in one of the games, the only way to beat the mind-reader boss is to plug your controler into the second player port. But obviously my comp doesnt have a second player port.

Does this mean the boss is now impossible?

Or am I hearing shitty internet rumors and memes?
>>
>>170479394
That's in MGS1 on the PS1 (or preferably on the Gamecube as Twin Snakes). There are other ways to beat him, but emulators will let you set up multiple controllers so you can switch to them.

If you die too much you'll get a codec call that explains you how to beat Mantis without the controller trick. If you have a TV that has mono audio and you die a lot during the Hind D boss fight you'll get a codec call where Campbell laughs at you for being a poorfag. Also you really want to play at least a few of the VR test missions, they put them in the game for a reason.

What you should be really weary of is the fucking awful pressure sensitive controls in MGS2 and 3. They are ways around it even if you have a 360 pad but you have to rebind shit set very specific sensitivity settings on the triggers, as out of the box MGS2 and 3 on PCSX2 don't detect pressure on the analogs until a rather large threshold, then detect it as slight pressure for a tiny threshold, then detect it as strong pressure. A good game for calibrating the triggers is Gran Turismo 4, as the HUD shows how much pressure you're putting on the triggers.

You will need a psp emu for peacewalker. avoid playing portable ops and just youtube the cutscenes instead.
>>
>>170484298
peacewalker is not worth the trouble.
>>
>>170484298
Peace Walker practically tells you to forget everything about Portable Ops like 10 minutes in anyway. For the NA version of PW also has cheat codes for 30 FPS, using the right analog for aiming and making wifi recruit mode work which are godsents. PPSSPP requires fiddling for getting rid of input lag though.
>>
I tried to get the game Monster Farm Jump running on MAME. I have tps.zip and everything and it's still telling me a ROM/CHD image is missing. Any ideas?
>>
If I have a GTX 770 is it better to use OpenGL or Direct3D in PCSX2?
>>
>>170484612
For the record. Also Peace Walker is very different from all of the other MGS games save for TPP. I really can't blame the people that don't like it either, it's arguably the point where Metal Gear jumped the shark.

Also, make sure to play Metal Gear 2 after MGS1.

So I have an ultimatium.

Um..

So, Bill Gates and Illuminati got a herd of nigger cattle ( OOOO WE GOT A HERD OF NIGGER CATTLE, WE GOT A HERD OF NIGGER CATTLE) They got a big herd of nigger cattle. Yippee Ki-Yay, we're nigger cattle herders. We got a herd of nigger cattle. They are the most docile fucking nigger cattle, we got 'em so docile, we got this awesome big fucking herd of nigger cattle. And they shit, and they sit there, and they watch TV, and they shit. It's the best fucking herd of nigger cattle. We took away all their guns, now they just shit, and we watch them and we're rich. We are so fucking rich, we have so much fucking money, we got this herd of nigger cattle, woooo, we're milking the fucking nigger cattle. It's the best thing ever.

So that's what the illuminati got, and I got a space alien.

So, here's my ultimatium: you can live in hell, with your herd of nigger cattle, or you can put me in charge of the Space Alien Temple. The third temple, okay, that Simple. Have fun with your nigger cattle 'cause I sure as hell ain't gonna fucking suck your fucking jew-nigger cock. Fuck yourself, you think I'm gonna fucking enjoy nigger cattle after I've had a fucking space alien? Are you fucking crazy? I've got a fucking space alien, of course I'm not gonna fuck with nigger cattle, fuck yourself! Enjoy your fucking nigger cattle! You got the nigger cattle, You got the nigger cattle, You got the nigger cattle, GO GO GO GO GO! You got the nigger cattle, you got a fucking herd of nigger cattle, we got 'em so docile, they just shit all day, ain't that great?
